The walls and shelves are filled with candles, incense, and wooden indians! Very cool, kinda weird.

SANTERÍA "I don't practice (it), I ain't got no crystal ball......" ......but Nichole C does, and so I tagged along with her to this Latin apothecary in Humboldt Park. I was more than happy to join in on an adventure this past weekend to 'Little San Juan', the Boricua district of Chicago. After suspicions that she was the victim of some decidedly bad juju, we made plans to come here and buy some vanquishing potions. Right away the smell of burning incense hits your nose like a right cross from Puerto Rican flyweight boxing champ Iván Calderón. There are a ton of crosses, religious figurines, scented candles, and many other items intended to rid the user of evil spirits. When we entered the store, a woman was in the process of receiving a 'cleansing' from the namesake owner. She was repeatedly hit with a bundle of twigs amid muttering of phrases en español, as well as some sprinkling of holy water and a final "push" of negative energies to the outdoors. Trippy! Feeling like a fish out of his 'agua de gringo', I sat on a stool and patiently waited while my girl had a special elixir prepared for her. It wound up being a warm opaque liquid, chartreuse in color and given to her......in a clear 2L soda bottle with the label peeled off. Interesting..... She was given instructions of use, along with an amulet to hang above the door and a few other tchotchkes. Keep in mind, all this happened in Spanish, so I've zero freakin' idea what was said. Nichole seemed pleased though, so that's good enough for me. As this is an old-world business helmed by a craggly old-world woman, credit cards aren't accepted. Also, the wooden shelves were crooked and barely attached the walls, while a lot of items were covered in a thin film of dust (likely from decades of non-use). That said, there's very few places like this anywhere near Chicago; Botanica Victoria gets plus points for the highly unique subject matter. If you're a believer in such things, stop on in and purge yourself of demons! Remember to bring cash, and brush up on your spanish!

Whenever my energy feels off, I'll go in for a limpia (usually a couple times a year), and I always leave feeling lighter and more grounded.

I noticed the cat did not have a collar on and decided to quickly take her to the nearest vet to get scanned for a chip. Luckily, the cat did have a chip and the owner was notified. The vet told me the owner did not seem concerned and said the cat was an outdoor cat, but that they would come pick her up from the office. I was told I had to stay with the cat until the owner arrived. I waited at the vet's office for over an hour with the cat, and the owner arrived just minutes before the office closed. I explained to the owner that the cat was in the intersection and at risk of being hit, so I thought it was the right thing to do to get her scanned for a chip and try to contact the owner. The owner immediately became defensive and said, "Well she's an outdoor cat. She goes by the trees." I again explained that she was not by the trees, but instead right next to the intersection and at risk of being hurt or killed. The owner rolled her eyes at me and left with her cat. I later realized that the owner of this cat is one of the owners of Alchemy Arts, her name is Dayna. It's incredibly irresponsible to let your cat roam freely outside next to such a busy intersection. After further digging, it also appears that Marie the cat was attacked by a dog while roaming outside in 2025 and has gone missing for days before -- further evidence that this cat should not be outdoors for her own safety.

In terms of tarot reading services, I would suggest holding out unless you feel you really resonate with the person. I spent $25 on a reading with Barbra and went home and regretted it a bit . It felt a little rushed but I'm sure that depends on the reader. Personally , I felt uncomfortable and that the reader was giving advice personally rather than from the cards. I've never experienced this much personal input/ advice outside of the cards during the reading, so I did not resonate with this reader or reading. I found myself feeling a bit invalidated honestly. In conclusion, please do your research before you to spend money on the services here! (A couple of months later) I've also given the tarot reading services here another try and I feel it's just too vague and too expensive for what you are receiving. I keep on giving these readers a chance and kind of get disappointed with the services I receive based on the amount of money I spend. If you're willing to spend upwards of $50 for a reading I'm sure you would get a different experience but if you're not willing to pay that much and are looking for something more affordable- I would hold off here- respectfully! Cool place though!!
