I was blown away by all the meat, the prepared goods. Burger counter. Some seating. Freezer choices. Some dried goods, bread. I got away with Chorizo, some lean ground beef and some beautiful olive oil. Is this place cheap? No! But, I pay for quality without batting an eye. Especially foodie stuff. Next round was a Tuesday aft. Ahhh. Better. I could see everything, not so packed. It was just after a long weekend so some things were sold out but I grabbed more lean beef, a chicken parm portion, a beef Jamaican patty and a stuffed potato. All were good! The chicken portion from the fresh cabinet was $11.50! More than my lb of ground beef! But it was a filling piece and fed me x 2. I love this place.

Go on a Saturday and you'll hear lots of Polish spoken. Apparently a lot of embassies' staffs visit there. The staff is always friendly and helpful, and you notice the positive atmosphere upon entering the shop. But it's the meat, and Lavergne's meat probably makes them the best butcher shop in Ottawa (at least that I've visited). I've been going for over 10 years and they never disappoint, with reasonable prices to boot. In particular, their sausages, pepperettes and BACON are fantastic, as are their various other cuts of fresh meat. Their store-made pork schnitzels are a favourite at home and much better than Metro (which has good meat), and Farm Boy (which dropped "normal" pork schnitzels many years ago in favour of that lime-cilantro aberration). Oh, and don't forget to try their cretons! Anyhoo, Lavergnes is a local treasure and I hope they're around for decades to come.

The owner, Gilles, and I messaged and he told me it was no problem if I picked up the following day when I needed. To my utter shock, I recently walked in on said next day to pickup my product and was outraged to be met with incredible anger and verbal abuse. Gilles yelled at me as soon as I entered the store, and soon after threatened to break my jars so I could be taught a lesson claiming I have to pick up another day instead. He was not open to have a calm conversation whatsoever. Without any prior communication in changing the status quo, I was met with such hostility and told I should think, use my brain, and anticipate what he was going to decide next. I couldn't believe how awfully he spoke to me and attacked my person. A friend of mine also noted rising hostility with her and stopped going. Without any prior warning as to what changed. I will never go back and I would not recommend this place to anyone. No one deserves to be spoken to in this manner. Truly disappointed that a business owner would treat his customers this way.

I haven't had the opportunity to get to any of those yet, but given how much I enjoyed that meat at Markie's, I'm looking forward to Montreal. Knowing full well that this could be a very filling meal, I tried to be somewhat reasonable on my order... I went for a basic lean meat sandwich and their regular order of smoked meat poutine, to share with someone else. The sandwich came out first, and the smoked meat was thinly sliced thickly stacked, lean, and flavorful with a then smear of yellow mustard on one slice of bread (was any other mustard available?) and a pickle spear. And then the poutine came. "Objects in the picture are larger than they appear." Who had any idea that a "regular" poutine would be super-sized, more than enough for 2? (Well, other satisfied customers, of course). As far as the poutine goes, I'm not sure how it compares with what you get at the poutineries downtown, but it was certainly satisfying, and the meat even more so.
