Boulden Brothers installed a new HVAC for us about 3 years ago. We live in a small townhouse. It cost about $14,000. Since then we have paid them every month for a maintenance contract. ($336,00 per year). We supplied the filters. They have been here twice a year since. This time when they came, they wanted an additional $500.00 to clean the furnace!! I checked with other reputable HVAC companies. This is not standard policy. Sadly I cannot recommend this company. I regret ever giving them the business. Be careful. What would you do? Just yesterday we had a visit from the people who installed our furnace. I called them because four times in a row the furnace tripped the breaker and that meant we had no heat because the furnace went off. my husband had to go down into the basement and flip the breaker to get the heat back on. At one point I even had to call our good friend, Stephen to come help. I couldn't figure out how to do it. There was something about you have to push it this way then that way and it's not something I'll be good at. Prior to this, there was a banging and clanging in the same furnace and we called the installers to come and fix that please. $300 later we learned all that clanging was caused from the filter not put in correctly so my husband took responsibility for that. Prior to this when we first bought this Furnace, we believe we were talked into a bigger more expensive unit than we even needed. $13,000 to cool and heat our house? We live in a two-story colonial we don't live in a mansion. Then there was their service fees or whatever they call it some sort of fee that you pay monthly to get some special kind of service that amounted to them coming to our home to inspect this and that so they could find more things wrong and charge us $1000 here and $1000 there for things they called necessary. We had no clue so we paid it. This happened one too many times so I canceled the so-called "service." Going back to yesterday, bear in mind I called them because the furnace was shutting itself off. After two hours and $300 later the service technician said the water heater was causing a hot spot in the breaker board or whatever you call it. Because of this he needed to turn it off the power to the water heaters. We would have to go without hot water until an electrician could come. An electrician from the same company mind you. Well that was going to cost another $300! We sucked it up thinking we were going to have pay it because who else could we call? And we were already in for $300 for nothing. They said they could come yesterday afternoon but I had other plans. I had a date with a friend, who has a very busy schedule, so I don't often get to see her. It was girls day! So I opted to have them come the next day. They were going to come today sometime between noon and four. But when I called to let them know that the furnace was clanging and they told me they wanted another $99 for another service call. I told them to shove it not in those words, but I made it very clear that I cannot deal with this company anymore. I consider them the biggest rip off in town. What would you do? my husband got on the phone and called another electrician. And if we need any more help with this furnace , I'll be calling friends. RIP OFF! These fools wanted over $5,000 to replace two old pipes and an expansion tank on our water heater and run a new fridge line. They refused to provide a written quote with any details. So, we called an HONEST plumber and got it done same-day for $740! Call Cameron's Ace Hardware in Oxford PA, they were great and they do plumbing heating & cooling. read more

Let me first say that we have Boulden Brothers for our heater- air conditioner and the monthly maintenance plan. That has worked well but unfortunately not Boulden electric !! The state re paved our street -caul de sac and with the heavy equipment our kitchen fan came loose. So we said let's call Boulden Electric ~ huge mistake and here is why. When you call they charge $99 to come out or $79 if you have that maintenance plan. This is NOT applied to the repair cost ...After the work was done we ask for a receipt email- When we got the receipt it had no dollar amounts ???? So I said I better call and was told yes customers do complain about that but apparently it has not changed ? That's when I discovered they also charge a Truck,fuel and stock surcharge $23 to which I questioned why am I paying for gas ?? The response was Horizon does that too??? What does that have to do with this conversation? Then they did a diagnosis costing $186.17 .The repair itself was $79 .. I could not believe all of these extra costs totalling $367.17 we used an online coupon for $25 so final $342.17.. Again I had to call to get that breakdown,, I placed several calls for clarification and received a call back while I was driving from a male that said he was the owner ,,, Explained my concerns and then he stated they had recorded on the workers cell the conversation discussing the cost prior to doing any work ,,,I checked with my husband and he never stated they were recording or ask permission ??? My prior bank experience reminded me that in DE you must disclose you are doing that.Since I was driving I couldn't hear the recording well so this male said I will send it but I never received that,,I could not believe that I did not call a prior electrician I had used that didn't charge gas,,,,stock surcharge or a diagnostic fee,,,What a complicated mess starting with no prices on the email receipt ,,, recording a customer without permission and not following thru on promises. We had what fortunately turned out to be a minor plumbing issue. "Rich" called to alert us he was on his way, even slightly before the scheduled window, and quickly discovered the problem. He was very personable and did not suggest we get additional service work done - something we have experienced from other plumbing services. Yes, getting plumbers to one's home is expensive, but it was a relief to know all is fixed and cost less than anticipated! read more

Bolden Brothers charged my 89-year-old widowed mother $577.00 to install an unknown brand, shoddy kitchen faucet they provided, and assured her it would last for years. Approximately 1 year later, the neck cracked off like a plastic toy. The manager Walt said "It's not our fault" the faucet broke and said it was two months out of warranty (!). He said she had to pay another $277.00 for them to remove their broken faucet and install another one. Her Moen faucet lasted 55 years -- 55! -- yet after 1 year the Boulden Brothers-provided faucet broke in half. Grand total for a kitchen faucet by them: $854.00. read more

We have Boulden Brothers for a 12-year warranty and HVAC maintenance contract with them, but every time they came for service, they tried to upsell us expensive products, like $3,000+ filters and $3,000+ UV lights, without providing any details or product information. They pressured us to make quick decisions, offering little to no explanation about the products or installations they were recommending. One technician sold us a $1,000+ UV light without providing any written materials to review. She pressured us to make a decision in just a few minutes. Thankfully, we were able to cancel the order the next day after thinking it through. None of their technicians made us feel comfortable, and their sales tactics felt pushy and dishonest. It became clear that this company was just trying to milk us for as much money as possible with outrageous, overpriced products and services. They also ignored the "No Soliciting" sign on our door. To make matters worse, two of their technicians broke the screen on our porch and didn't mention it, just left as if nothing had happened. Their rude, condescending attitude made us feel like we were beneath them. After all these experiences over the past 9 years, we've decided not to use them for our next HVAC replacement. We still have 3 more years left with this sketchy company for HVAC system maintenance, and we can't wait to be rid of them. read more

Do not use Boulden. They wanted to charge $47,000 to replace a sewer line that another plumber did and more for around $13,000. Now my kids, who had a brand new system installed two years, quit and had to be totally replaced. Today, after coming home from vacation, the system is still not working correctly and they are on a "Waitlist" to get it repaired AND Boulden wants to charge them a service fee on top of that! The problem is, we did not request a service! over a year ago we were having problems with our air conditioning and opted for Boulden Brothers to replace it with a brand new unit. That was good except that we signed up for some kind of service agreement that lasted at least a year that we're not even sure what we were getting, but it was more of an annoyance than anything else two hours in our home for what never seemed necessary. This went on for an entire year men and women coming in and out and what was surely time-consuming each and every time we were told we had some major problem that was gonna cost some big money and we believed it and we paid it That brings me to today. Today I was notified in a text message that Boulden Brothers was on the way I didn't recall asking them to come. After two hours of wham bang I was told. What expensive thing I was gonna need next and I said please just leave. Please just let me sign the papers and you can go and I want to cancel this service. I HIGHLY do not recommend! They will rip you off and are way over priced! I needed to replace 3 outlets and they charged me $200 for the labor for each outlet. The part is only $20 max. You would think that if they come out for less than an hour to replace 3 outlets that there would be one labor charge and not 3 separate ones. I'm never recommending them to anyone. read more

Watch out for scam technique. I had a rental property which I had serviced annually for preventive maintenance. Technician told tenant he identified nasty disease-causing debris in the air duct and I would need to install a purifying light for $1900. Of course, I had to comply since my tenant would think I did not care about their health. I felt trapped and paid the money. There was no testing of the "debris" - I think most people have some sort of debris in their air ducts but not causing disease. I no longer trust this company. The 2 stars are because their initial tecnician was actually smart, and nailed down the issue, but he doesnt work for them anymore. They dont have an overall expert to figure out issues. I had a damp ceiling issue which could a plumbing or a hvac issue. Despite explaining the problem they first sent a plumber who was actually quite smart, who mentioned that there wasnt an obvious water issue, most likely a ac condensation issue. He wanted us to open up the ceiling so he could come back and troubleshoot with the ceiling open. I paid $99 for the initial troubleshooting. When I called back after the ceiling was open, though I specifically asked for the same person, they didnt tell me he had left, they sent a plumber again! Even though I had explained that it could be a hvac issue. Of course the plumber found no water issue, and now they want to charge me $99 again for a hvac person to come over and take a look! Boulden, please listen properly to the customer and send out an appropriate technician. We are not experts to call the exact technican whether its a plumber or something else. It's your job to figure out where the issue is in the initial $99 we pay you and provide a quote. My observations: The schedulers and the technicians and the managers are not at all in sync. Big communication gap. No continuity to the customer They just want to keep scheduling and collecting money. They just have great ads and slogans. Change your slogan Boulden. You do not do it right the first time. In fact you cant even figure out whats wrong the first time. Dont fall for them, like we did. I have no confidence anymore in their expertise or knowledge, so im going to someone else. They installed a defective kitchen faucet from their truck and assured me the no-brand faucet would be good for years. It cracked and fell off after 1 year and 2 months--just 2 months after warranty. Boulden Brothers refused to stand behind their faucet and work and said I have to pay another approx. $300 to remove their defective faucet and install a new one I bought (Moen). The manager told me "It's not our fault." My previous Moen faucet lasted 55 years. Extremely disappointed in them. I joined as a "Boulden Buddy" last year where I paid a monthly membership fee, but I have cancelled my membership. I no longer want to be their "buddy" if this is how they treat people. We waited 5 months for our water heating project to be completed and in spite of numerous calls that were not responded to we finally had to cancel the project. We also had paid for their Home Guard Plan hoping to bring down the cost--we never got to use it. I doubt we will get our money back. The ladies that answer the phones at the company are wonderful, as are the service men that come out--it is a shame they work for such a badly run company. read more

Boulden Brothers installed a new gas furnace in my house in December 2015. Two weeks ago, I come back to my house on a Sunday from a couple days at a funeral to find my house frigid...48 degrees, mid-Feb. I call the company's emergency line and eventually get a representative on the phone. He tells me that no one is available for emergency service and that I would have to wait two days, till Tuesday, for a technician. I told him my house was quite cold. His reply was that he could "google" another company to see if someone else could respond. Well, I did that and had a tech at my door at 0800 hours Monday, the next morning. This tech tells me that Boulden left all my furnace documents inside and that they eventually broke the blower motor. He then showed me the paperwork (I wondered why I couldn't find it when the heat went out) he pulled from the furnace (it was that model's) and pictures of the problem that he took. He said that I should go back to Boulden for an explanation. I sent the pictures to Boulden. Well, after a week of back and forth, I am told that I never asked for an emergency technician that Sunday and that I chose to wait till two days (in 48 degree house) for for the appointment. That they never left any paperwork inside the furnace and if I had asked on Sunday, they would have sent a tech out to fix the problem right away under warranty. Hmmm, no mention of that in my two phone calls Sudnay and Monday, with them. So, too bad for me. It cost me a $1,000 to learn about bad customer service. read more

This review should have been posted for a while but it's better late than never; I needed an extra outlet to be installed for my treadmill in the basement they came and look at it and said to me that to put in 1 outlet it with cost me $495 dollars yes to install 1 outlet I repeat $495 I ask the electrician if I hear him correctly, he said yes so I smiled took my tablet and told him to hold on a moment, did some more research and found out that it should not be anything over $200 I send him on is way out the front door, after I pay him $99 for 10 minutes of waisted time I realize he did not come with any intention to do any work but to collect $ 99 for looking around. That is what their Customer Service looks like. Should never recommend this company to no one! They are a ripoff so disheartening and dishonest people. read more

I gave 3 stars because the plumbers were able to fix a plastic pipe leak successfully in a half hour. However the charged me 676.00 dollars, which I feel was excessive. The water was coming thru a pin hole leak down on my furnace/ac unit. I needed to get this fixed to avoid damage to my furnace. I am 72 years old with bad knees and can not climb a ladder. They gave me an estimate 875.00 which was a shock They indicated that there could be more than 1 leak, because there was water all over the pipes. They would only subtract the 99.00 dispatch fee if I agreed to get the work done. I thought the estimate was way to high but I agreed because I needed to get it fixed. I feel this was a form of price gouging. If you hire Boulden Brothers be prepared for a big bill. This service was done at my home in North East MD on 6/10/22. My AC has not worked since the leak, but i will not be calling Boulden. I can't afford them. read more

While my husband decided to go with another company, what kept Boulden in the running (process of elimination, Boulden made it to the top 2) was Stephani. Boulden was truthful, they weren't the cheapest, nor were they the most expensive. I believe they are competitively priced. read more

Well, for those of you out there who may have thought that Boulden Brothers was one of the last remaining reputable HVAC companies in the area, sorry to disillusion you, but they are not. Its easy to correct an issue after you've been "caught" and confronted about it. However, its a whole other matter, and better, to avoid allowing the issue to occur in the first place. Other than existing warranty work, I would avoid these guys for new projects!!! I would stick with small local guys. read more

I amde an appointment 48 hours prior to the service call. I was told it would be between 12 -5PM, with a call 30 min. before arrival of the tech. I took of work and was home from 11 to 5, no one showed up, no call. when I called them they said the service call was canceled. lousy service at best. learn from my mistake for not paying attention to their rating and call someone else. read more

I loved this company. They have done so much work in my home. Upgraded my electric panel, installed a surge protection system at my circut box, serviced my AC, serviced my heater, connected my hotub, changed my hose bib, added a little clog system to my heater, and more They were always nice and did good work at a fair rate. The last time they were here (2+ years ago) my experience was horrible. It was like having a 1980's car salesman in my Livingroom. He charged me almost $600 to replace a thermostat, was slick talking and tried to sell me a $2500 filter system. He did not honor the discount I was supposed to receive for being a monthly subscriber. He then said he would give it to me and only took off like $5 like I can't do basic math. He was so disrespectful in his tone to me like I was beneath him. I was so disappointed. Here we are years later and I am in need of having some work done and again searching for a good contractor. I don't know what changed that all of a sudden anyone would treat such a loyal customer this way. Everyone was nice to work with. Unfortunately I did not use them as they quoted an extremely high price to replace a toilet - Quoted me over $600 to replace a $200 toilet (retail). So basically wanted to charge $400 in labor/fees. Way too much for a 45 -60 min job. Worst part is they charged me $99 to come out and give me that crazy high estimate. If possible know the reasonable cost range of the job and work with someone who will at least give a ball park (non binding) estimate over phone instead of charging you for it. read more

They charge $99 to come out in order to give a ridiculous price OR sell you something. They wanted $900 to install a GFI circuit. I got it done for $175 (plus the $99 these guys charged me to NOT do it). They charge "by the book" they say. They won't show you the book and frankly I'm wondering why they refuse to tell you what something is going to cost if it's in the darn "book." Even if they estimate with no unforeseen issues it would help. And of course if I'm charging FIVE TIMES what it should cost I could afford a few extra minutes if something is a bit more difficult. Go with a small business owner! Unless you want to pay more, get sold a contract or a new anything. read more

I had Boulden Brothers come out and service my heater/air conditioner that was working. I was told I needed to do $1800 worth of work to get it working well. I did it. One thing was an expensive clean the fan motor. Two weeks later the gas went out and I did not realize that at the time, looked at the filter which was just cleaned and was not clean. The same service technician cam out to check it out and talked me into a modification to use disposable filters, but did not bring any with him when he made the modifications. I had to go buy filters, I put one in and there were air gaps all around. I called Boulden Brothers and they finally sent a senior technician. He explained 4 more reasons why the modification did not work. He came out and replaced the modification, for more money, and told me that it may not work well because the fan motor was dirty. I said, you guys just cleaned the fan motor for $800. He looked, yes they did. He said it was not clean and then he had to work another 45 minutes to clean it. Was the rest of the $1800 done correctly, who knows. When they care, Boulden Brothers can work well, however, they often do not care. read more

My furnace was not working properly, and called Boulden Brothers for a repair/replacement. When I had not heard from Boulden Brothers by the end of the day, I called another company for an appointment. After the appointment with the other company the next day, I finally got a call back from Boulden Brothers. Without knowing it, apparently I was put on a Do Not Service list over a $19 charge for some home warranty program that did not go through because of an expired credit card. Fine. They'll get the $19, and the purchase of a new furnace will be made elsewhere. read more

Not impressed. We paid for a Heating checkup in October on a system that was installed 3 years ago. We woke up with no heat on November 19th. We cannot get anyone from Boulder until Tuesday 22nd. It's still under warranty, but we have to pay $99, plus whatever they tell us is wrong. Would love to know if this is something that happens to other disabled/seniors. They told me that the 12 year warranty that they sold me with the system was no longer valid because I had sold the home to my daughter. At no time did Boulden tell me that the warranty was non-transferrable and this was never mentioned in any conversations, e-mails or on the contract that I signed for the installation of the system. Had them for a routine maintenance only. House is cooling fine. Was told that I had a leak and the "old" refrigerant" was $525 per pound and that I probably needed 2 pounds. Was also told that I needed new parts and that i should consider replacing my 13 year old unit (that I purchased and had installed from them) because the lifetime of HVAC units is only 10-15 years. I also had the entire compressor replaced under warranty 4 years ago! I didn't believe what the tech told me but to be sure I had another company come out. They showed me the gauges and said that everything is fine and I do not have a leak or need more coolant. BTW, they said that their price was $135 per pound! We selected Boulden Brothers because they were a local family business and wanted to support them. My parents purchased a new Air conditioner Unit and over the last 2 years have been going back and forth we them that the house is not getting cold. Each year come out charge my parents and say nothing is wrong. Finally this year I hired a third contractor and he found there is a leak and we have been waiting for over a month for a part and very little communication except the part has not come in. I have escalated and still waiting. Very frustrated and feel like my parents have been taken advantage of. read more

Crew is always polite and the work is done correctly. Boulden has done other work which I thought was reasonable enough but today ticked me off. The pricing structure is highway robbery for some items. Price quote to replace a toilet supply valve was $300.00. Parts including line from valve to toilet and valve would be no more than $15.00 and time to replace maybe 30-40 minutes. $99 just to show up and $200 labor. I will look elsewhere next time. I sent them home. The reason I called them was afraid hard pipe from wall might be compromised and that would be a mess for me but at $300 for a minor job they can just go prey on old ladies who don't know any better. Do NOT sign a long term propane contract with them. Once they have you, you'e stuck and then it doesn't matter how they treat you. And definitely don't let them bury one of their tanks! Been a customer since 1997 for propane. They used to be good, but things have gone downhill. This year it's so bad I need to discontinue service; they leave me no choice. I've left emails and voicemails. I'm promised calls back that don't happen. I was threatened to have my propane service shut off and tank removed with just a few hours notice on aug 7th 2015 if I didn't immediately go home, scan in the updated contract, and email them a copy. Even know they had a copy in the postal mail. And even know I called wed the 5th to offer to email a copy, and nobody got back to me with where to send it. On Aug 10th I was promised a call back within "2 business days" by the owner or someone who had spoken to the owner to resolve all the problems with my account. It's Aug 19th and I still haven't heard anything from anyone. But they did have time to send a tech by today to put a lock on my tank so I don't "buy propane elsewhere". I don't want to break contract. I just want someone to return my #$@#$ phone calls. At this point just sell me the tank or remove it. I'm done with giving you 2nd, 3rd, 4th chances. When a company is selling something essential that people must have to heat their homes, heat water, and/or cook, it's not ok for them to lock someone into a contract and then simply stop returning phone calls and take zero responsibility for frequent "misunderstandings". read more

Quoted a job then didn't do the job as quoted. They were hired for a whole house pipe replacement. They left old plumbing in place because they 'ran out of time' and wanted to charge for another call. They left trash everywhere and didn't clean up after themselves my dog found a connector to chew on- lovely. Had a leak spring a half hour they left and another larger leak 2 days later. The answer was well it was under pressure- they never tested any of the lines ( we know this as air was in the lines) lines that wee cross threaded, original guy they sent was snippy and defensive when trying to have a civil conversation. Had to call a manager to get the rest of the plumbing finished and gone over. Never any follow up from manager to see if second go around was any better if we were pleased with how it was handled, nothing. They came so highly recommended and we are nothing but disappointed. Put in tankless hot water heater and changed all piping to propane and removed upstairs pipe connector for stove. Changed to flex hose (not code) and now I have to replace all piping in order to put stove in per CODE. Do not trust. Use shortcuts and don't follow code. If you use make sure the have a permit. They install a furnace last year for someone I know who ask me to oversee the property for her because she lives in another state... I subsequently saw where they cut a huge hole into the living room wall next to the furnace room, supposedly to supply air to the furnace instead of piping it from the outside... This is dangerous because if the furnace is ever compromised it could instead pump Carbon monoxide back through the same hole into the living room and the rest of the house causing illness and death... "Carbon monoxide poisoning occurs when carbon monoxide builds up in your bloodstream. When too much carbon monoxide is in the air, your body replaces the oxygen in your red blood cells with carbon monoxide. This can lead to serious tissue damage or even death. Carbon monoxide is a colorless, odorless, tasteless gas produced by burning gasoline, wood, propane, charcoal or other fuel. Improperly ventilated appliances and engines, particularly in a tightly sealed or enclosed space, may allow carbon monoxide to accumulate to dangerous levels". Also one of the vent is having an issue and they were paid to investigate and they could not identify where the breach was in the vent line... They are yet to return the money for the evaluation or repair the hole... read more
