If I had read these reviews prior to contracting work with this company, I would have listened to…read morewhat people shared in these reviews and would have missed out on the opportunity to have excellent work done by Burns & McBride. This is a long review, but I believe it was important for me to put my experience into words. I live in Kennett Square in a beautiful large home and everyone who comes here to bid on work, doubles and triples the price of every job. Often, they obtain our address and look up the value of the home, then come back with a high estimate. Not with Burns and McBride. I was getting my oil changed for my car and I mentioned to a woman I didn't even know, that my hot water heater needed to be replaced and she told me you should call McBride and Burns. "they do great work for me" and she was very happy with the company. So I did, and they sent someone out free of charge to look at my hook ups. Prior to coming out they had already quoted me a price for the same hot water heater for a lot less than my current company, whom I have been with for 15 years - who also wanted $100.00 to evaluate the problem and it didn't go towards the hot water heater purchase. Burns and McBride came immediately to my home free of charge and by the next day, today they had scheduled for the installation to be completed. The day the work was performed it was a lot of slippery snow in my driveway. The two very professional and respectable installers, Calvin and Dominic, were local men from the area. They were so nice and professional. They came in got right to work and because of the snow and lack of access to the basement they had to hand carry the water heater in and the old one out of my basement. They put down tarps all over the floors and were very careful not to bump any of the cabinets or furniture. They were diligent and drained the tank that is there and hooked up the new one. It was a Friday night and they were in no rush to get home, it was evident their priority was to do good work and provide great service. I am a "talkative person and I ask a lot of questions." I asked them about their owners, as I always do and they replied without hesitation, the owner Mr. McBride is a really nice guy. I said "good." You can tell it was sincere. I like to know who I am doing business with and it's important to me about the owner of the business. Once they tried to leave the truck got stuck in my driveway and they shoveled the truck out by hand and put salt. It was late about 7:00 PM Friday night and they were in no rush to leave, each helping the other to make sure they were out safely as they each had a truck. Eventually we had to have the driveway plowed to get them on their way. Being a Manager with 100 employees, I was so impressed with them... now for the amazing part, they didn't take payment before they left, because the woman who worked there said I could pay them on Monday. Amazing price, superb service within 24 hours. This included someone who showed up the same day to take measurements. This was to date the best repair experience I had had in the 15 years I have lived in this home. Thank you Burns and McBride, I wish I knew the woman's name who recommended you to me, so that I could thank her! Also thanks to Calvin and Dominic you are great workers and fine young men!

This is our second year with Burns and McBride, and unfortunately, we are experiencing the same…read morescheduling issues as last year. We contacted them because our air conditioner is not working and we needed prompt service. Last year, a representative repeatedly postponed our appointment after a date and time had already been confirmed. While I understand that arrival windows can be flexible, I would expect the technician to show up on the agreed date at a minimum. Both my husband and I work outside the home and had to take time off for the appointment. When the rep did not show, and we called to follow up, we were told they needed to reschedule, forcing us to take additional days off. We thought that the rep was not good and continued our business with them. This year, the pattern has repeated. We scheduled an appointment, they confirmed a Saturday time slot, and we waited. The rep never showed. When we called, we were told Saturdays are for emergencies only, and our appointment had been moved to Monday without any notice. We waited again on Monday, only to be told it was postponed once more to the following day. What makes this even more frustrating is that neither the technician nor the company took the initiative to call and inform us of the cancellation or delay. Every single time, we are the ones who have to call to find out what is happening. That is not acceptable customer service. When someone takes time off work for a scheduled appointment, the least a company can do is pick up the phone. We have been patient, but this level of unreliability and lack of communication is unacceptable when we are without air conditioning and losing workdays waiting for a service that never arrives. Our house is just 7 yrs old now that i read the other review , i wonder if they have actually made efforts to fix the issue in the first place

When we needed a new HVAC, we got an estimate from Frederick that was $1000+ over the estimate from another long-time, reputable local company. But out of loyalty to Frederick, we politely asked if they would shave $200 off to come *slightly* closer to this other quote. We actually hate haggling, but had read that you're expected to, for new HVAC. Can't hurt, right? They responded. Had they just said, "No, that's not possible due to XYZ," we would have hired them and paid the full price. But instead the rep explained why it wasn't possible, and then, in a polite but insulted tone, *rescinded their bid*, essentially telling us they would not be doing the job either way. All over a request for $200 off a $7000 job. We were stunned. Needless to say, we haven't called them for anything since, and we're the kind of easy-going, non-complaining customers contractors usually like to have. We got our HVAC at the other place and it's running fine, a few years later. Owner, if you're reading this: I get that you're doing well enough that you don't need to accept anyone's attempt to haggle, and can charge a lot more than the competition. Good for you. I'm purposefully not giving you a 1 star because I don't believe in trying to hurt someone's business. But talk to your guys about not reacting in a personal way to long-time customers. The reaction we got was really uncalled for. Maybe the guy was having a bad day, but you have to leave that behind when you're interacting with a customer, especially an established one. He could have just said "No, we can't do that, but let me know if you want to proceed with us." We would have.

Alexis, the very nice salesperson, gave me a quote on three systems, and helpful information to review. We chose Joseph Frederick & Sons because they are a certified Carrier provider and they only install Carrier systems. All of the HVAC professionals were friendly and explained the system well. The cleaned up after themselves.

They were on time, checked out the AC, added coolant and then took a quick peek at the furnace. They said both look good for the age (17 years) and should be good for a while. I had questions about rebates for heat pumps and he had answers about rebates, rough costs and advantages of the new heat pumps. He reiterated that we didn't need to change out our current equipment but if we feel it's important for environmental reasons there are good options. We'll definitely be using them going forward, and have a fall furnace checkup scheduled.

On the first cold day this winter he claims the heater is all rusted out in the exchanger and has to be replaced, along with the entire system because a new heater can't work with an old air conditioner. Our neighbor suggested we call their guy. He's been in business for 30 years. Needless to say, the heater was not rusted he showed me the unit was very dirty, the fan motor and wheel were clogged with dirt and there were two dead birds in the chimney. The outside air conditioner was only 10 years old. I'm convinced SK had never done anything other than collect their fee and try to sell stuff we didn't want or need.
