1. Walked in to check in, couple employees seemed to be sick. Not too sure why they don't stay home to recover (maybe they are short staffed so they have to be there?) 2. Green Fees are too high. I remember when the rates used to be in the low $60s. Now it's $72 and me personally, I do not think it's worth that much. Some of the bunkers are as hard as a rock. Greens are in ok shape. Tee boxes were all beat up, people are not filling their divots. 3. Don't really have a problem with the Taphouse food wise, I did see something concerning regarding the 2 staff members there. Walked in to get some drinks before they closed, noticed that the 2 of them were drunk. Not a good look, seems like they don't have much control over there if they are drinking on the job. 4. Not much of a surprise here, but as we all know the driving range is still a disaster. Hopefully they'll get that all changed up sooner rather than later. read more

My daughter's Quinceanera was held here last Sunday, 10/10/21. We hosted over 200 people. The staff was great. The bartenders were so wonderful specially when it came to maneuvering the drinks for the teens. I have never seen so many Shirley temples in my life! Place is in good condition with sloping greens that are well maintained. The guys working there are friendly and civil considering that they are just not letting people play after the lockdown and it's supper packed today. Good municipal golf course. Super friendly staff. Maintenance has suffered the last couple of years but it is to be expected because the pandemic I guess. One really bad thing, the practice range balls. Super old, rock hard and super filthy. I got a bucket that had more sand than balls the other day. Most of the mats are worn out. read more

quality has dropped off recently particularly with the greens. They used to be sort of famous now they are just sort of lousy. Punched more than a month ago and still rough and bumpy as can be. it does not seem they roll the greens at all any more. THE GOOD: Beautiful venue for events especially the new Tap House for food and brew. For golf the course layout is fun and challenging. 5 stars! THE BAD: The driving range could use an upgrade, if you have a wonderful venue for weddings and events why not match that 'newness' to the range. 3.5 stars. THE UGLY: This only pertains to the golf course greens. First a disclaimer, I am an amateur golfer, I am not an expert but I do enjoy the game. The greens on this Golf Course need to be ripped out and changed. It is unfair to have greens running on the stimp meter scale at '+12' when the slopes of the greens are more than 3%. Very fast greens that are bumpy is a nightmare. When a 1 foot putt breaks 3 feet and rolls out to 6 feet, that's like the USGA ruining the US Open venue type stuff. I've played here for 12 years and refuse to play it anymore. Let's start with the driving range. It's a disaster, something out of Tin Cup and an embarrassment to the course and Walnut Creek, owners of the course. I suggest taking a bulldozer and leveling the thing and then lay down artificial turf. Then replace the awful ball dispenser. It's charged my card many times and not dispense balls (tip: check your card statements later if no balls come out!). Also it needs a new and bigger practice putting green near the range, the other two are OK. Now, the course. There are some really nice holes and a number "what were they thinking?" holes (the ninth, being one) and the fairways are often poor due to something like three or more different types of grass (thanks to the guy who maintained the course until 2009 and was an utter disaster). The greens are good, but a number are ridiculously sloped and it's like carnival golf. Some suggested they be ripped out and replaced and I'm all for that! For me, besides the second hole, the par 3 are subpar. The views, though, are nice and it's a very peaceful place to play golf. And the price is very good. But is it one of the best in the Bay Area? No. And not even in the East Bay as I prefer to play other courses, even Franklin Canyon, Tilden Park, Canyon Lakes and even Diablo Creek. I think it's needs a major redo, in design, layout and fairways. I'm willing to pay more for it, too. read more

Usually a golf course. Fast greens , good Kikuyu grasses plush everywhere, championship course for years. Well in a day that's all changed. Brown Patch and Dollar Spot are bad fungus. Reclaimed water, rain, frost, sun, all bad for grass. It's here now, to stay for awhile. Stay posted. Greens won't be the same. Update : course is back in championship conditions. Hole 16 green is wicked right now and some hole positions on numbers 6,7, 11 and especially 14 are not kind. Stay below hole. Well groomed and best in bay. These parts don't like winter rains and fungus that come with it, grounds crew did a good job lifting course up. read more

Just wanted to give a quick "thanks" to Brandon at the Boundary Oaks golf course pro shop for going above and beyond to help me spend the last day with my son before he goes back to college absolutely amazing. We did not have a reservation but was hoping if we got to Boundary Oaks early enough, we could get on the standby list, which we did. First off, I really enjoy Boundary Oaks and have been fortunate to play this course for 40 years. It's always in amazing conditions, especially the greens. Better than most private clubs in my opinion. But the people at Boundary Oaks make this place feel like a country club for the everyday golfer l. Heather in their clubhouse grill is simply a breath of fresh air. Witty, sassy and just plain nice. Yes! Brandon knew this was a special day for me and my son and he delivered. Got us in to play when another group cancelled at the last second and I cannot thank him enough. The staff that manage and maintain this course are just amazing and absolutely rare in the Municipal golf world. Keep up the great work, it's my favorite place to play. STOP AND READ THIS ENTIRE REVIEW BEFORE PLAYING BOUNDARY OAKS.. First off, if there was a 0 stars on yelp...that's where I would have ranked this course and their staff today. We tee'd off at 12:22pm today.Well over 5 hours to play a course that should take 4:30 tops. Everything was pretty smooth until we left the first tee--We quickly realized it was going to be a LONG HOT day. Here were today's NO NO's Boundary Oaks: (our group has 20 years of golf experience each btw)..... First off....they allot only 7 minutes in between groups teeing off. Wow that's real low. We must have waited... on a serious note----4-10 minutes in between EVERY shot. This was so miserable, especially in the heat. M I S E R A B L E. Second, Boundary Oaks hosted a morning tournament today. WAIT--- ON A SUNDAY??? Let's stop the greed...you already get a full house EVERY sunday. Tournaments are great for the week and perhaps a saturday. Not a sunday. Third...if you are going have a sunday morning tournament....at least speed up the play by making everyone use a cart. I'm not trying to be rude...but there was a 70 year old man walking right in front of us (playing with two guys in a cart). It must had taken the poor elderly gentlemen 5 minutes to catch up to his partners on every shot. Sunday before twilight EVERYONE should RIDE to speed up play since this is the MOST expensive time to play golf. Fourth...Cart girl for snacks....Wow....we saw her once the whole day...and then she comes on hole 17. We were dying for water and maybe a cold beer. But don't worry, there was NO WATERCOOLERS...just a few water fountains. Fifth, I believe there were holes WITHOUT a ball cleaning tool. Sixth, I called in to complain twice during the round. Sure i was being a bit forward with them....but they GAVE ATTITUDE right back to me. This is when it dawned on me that this course was probably owned by the city. Yes it is. That is why they are GREEDY and don't care too much about anything. I won't spend another DIME of my money at boundary oaks. I don't want to play at a golf course where their employees don't TAKE ACCOUNTABILITY. Good golf courses understand that we are the customers....and we should be treated like WE are paying their bills.... NO ATM machine. No excuse...it's 2012, get a grip on this. Plus this shows you how smart this course is.....If 10 people a day use an ATM machine and the machine charges a $2.00 fee...that is an extra $7,000 dollars of revenue to the course a year. Then use the $7,000 for my last paragraph below this... Last but certainly not least....can i just get 1 flat surface to TEE OFF on. I mean every tee box was a disaster. Disclaimer: this review is for boundary oak as a venue. When we first decided on this place one thing that sold us is that it is essentially a one stop shop. They provide the tables, linens, chairs, cutlery, food, servers, and point person for all my wedding questions. Charlene (the wedding point person) was such a gem. At the time I lived in LA and we corresponded only via email. She was always very prompt and professional in her responses and was so accommodating. She had great vendor recommendations and her amazing personality is what really sold this place even though it was above our original budget. She helped us schedule a tasting which was very lovely as we got to sample then select what we wanted guests to eat. She also helped us select the linen colors, design our wedding floor plan, recommended the Uplighting (which I highly recommend you get because it totally elevates the entire venue), helped us with our music playlist for the cocktail room, and was the day of coordinator helping us connect with all our vendors and setting up the bridal suite as our tea ceremony room (she even provided us with cups and the hot water!) Everything was so picturesque from the decor to the music, I loved it all. Though I didn't get to try the appetizers, since we ran behind schedule for pictures and the tea ceremony, I heard that guests enjoyed it overall, with the exception that a few of my guests didn't get any , maybe because they were too far from the service area? The flow of the reception itself was smooth, though, by the time guests were seated and served they were quite hungry. In retrospect, I think I would have gotten a lot more appetizers or asked to bring in a roast pig or something to that effect so that everyone wasn't so hungry by the time dinner was served. Many guests also commented that the meal portions were quite small and that they were going to go out to eat after our wedding. Sad! We selected the sunburst salad starter and for entree we selected the grilled Mahi Mahi and the bistro fillet. Looking back and comparing the portion sizes of each food item the salads were about the same and the Mahi Mahi portion size was also about the same. The beef entree was about 25% less in terms of size of cut and thickness (see photos below for you to decide). I wish I had known because a majority of my guests had ordered that which is probably why they were hungry. So keep that in mind when figuring out how much food you need. We had enough for a plate a person, but the portion sizes were too small if you went with the bistro fillet. This is my only gripe about this place as a number of my guests had mentioned this fact. Taste wise it was similar to the tasting, but I feel like the meat was more flavorful to me, but most people said it was just fine. Overall, this was a great venue, lots of amenities, and Charlene was a great coordinator. Just remember to get more appetizers so guests aren't too hungry for dinner. Also soak in the ambiance because with Uplighting and boundary oaks weddings decor it's an amazing dream of a wedding! read more

I'm giving this course 5 stars because I believe it's a very nice public course and very under rated in Yelp. I have not purchased any food but I play here almost weekly. The holes are laid out creatively and the greens are in excellent condition for a public course. Staff is very friendly. This review is for the Club House and a 4th Friday Dinner that Gayle, the Kid and I attended last night. It's been close to 20 years since I last visited Boundary Oak and that involved a work-related Holiday Dinner. Since that time, various restaurant attempts have come and gone, and what is currently operating seems like more of an event-specific catering operation. The Golf Course and Club House are all owned by the City of Walnut Creek, and judging by the interior, there's also plenty of room for some fairly substantial events (including tournaments, weddings, Christmas Luncheons, Bar Mitzvahs, etc.). However, considering my aversion to any putz playing, I'm not a big golfer. At $20 a plate (including dessert and coffee), Gayle and I both agreed that the Holiday Dinner Buffet was a pretty good deal and a steal when you factor in a hungry teenage boy. The somewhat limited buffet choices were well chosen and consisted of a couple salads, a mixed vegetable dish that was not overcooked, nicely lumpy mashed potatoes, tasty fish, and excellent carved slices of prime rib. Gayle and I also ordered a nice bottle of Merlot which went well with our meal and was reasonably priced. We also thought the coffee and dessert cake were quite good and that the service was friendly and welcoming. The place was also packed and it one of those few times where we were the younger ones in the room. We figured that our fellow diners were mostly golf course related, as Boundary Oak is a bit remote and these events don't seem to be widely advertised. We found out about this dinner on their web site. It also helped that we won 2 of the dinners at a fundraising auction. It was a great evening out and an experience we're likely to repeat. read more

I am really new to hitting golf balls and so far I've only been to the driving ranges at Boundary Oak in Walnut Creek and at Diablo Creek in Concord. Boundary Oak doesn't have lights for night operation so it's a day-use only driving range. Large buckets are $9 and there are lots of spots. I prefer ones close to the very end so that nobody can see me and laugh (except the lefties). You can drive up to the parking lot by the driving range and there are plenty of parking spots. Not sure if there is a restaurant or bar nearby unless there's a private event (we've been to a couple of beautiful weddings here!) This place is close to my home and it's nice, but it's my second favorite driving range out of two. read more

I like this place. I just played here today after work, and with the days getting shorter it was nice to get to swing the clubs a bit. It feels like a medium difficulty type course to me but the greens are a real challenge. It was my first time playing here in a few years so I couldn't remember anything, and it could have been the light, but these greens seemed tough to read for me, which is a good thing. The lawns are well cared for, and there are some nice water features to avoid. One thing I really like about this course is it's location, specifically it's out of the way, but still close to town. Maybe 10 minutes from downtown Walnut Creek. The real bonus though is that it's a quiet beautiful course. You can really enjoy it. read more

This is my home course (aka course I play most often). It's a well kept course and everyone I've encountered is nice. Most of the courses I go to have duck poop everywhere or are too close to suburban homes. For the price this place is affordable. I like their driving range and the addition of the new shade covers. It gets HOT out in Walnut Creek in the summer. The cafe is surprisingly good. Breakfast burritos and decent burger options. The pro shop sells pretty nice stuff and tons of Nike shirts for Boundary Oak if you're into that. read more

I don't play at Boundary Oak often but the track is interesting and good. Most of fairways are wide and open and good for all levels of players. The course is not overly hilly for walkers and every hole are uniquely different. The greens are very challenging due to its slope and speed. The course was in very good condition when I played yesterday (2/19) because no rain for last 4 weeks. read more

This place turned me away and said they stopped selling buckets of range balls at 4:00pm. I walked in at 4:10pm. Fine no big deal. The problem is that 2 people walked in behind me and when I was leaving the parking lot, they were walking out with a bucket of balls. Can't be one way for some and not for others. I'm trying to introduce golf to my kids but I've run into and issue at BO that is pretty ridiculous. Two out of the last three times we've gone to the driving range to practice, the ball dispenser is out of commission. The first time the pro shop told me they just didn't have anyone to drive the cart to collect the balls so maybe they'd open a few hour later after they collected some balls from the range. Second time, the ball dispenser was out of order, despite it being 6 pm and the sign said they closed at 8. What kind of place is this that can't get their driving range working correctly? read more

This review is just on the golf experience. I am a 9 hcp and have on public links all over the Bay Area in the past 8 years I have lived here and this is by far the best deal for your money as far as public golf. The practice facilities are great. They have two chipping greens and two putting greens. Not much of an area to practice bunker shots. The best part is that they actually have grass tees. I am reluctant to post this because I don't want them getting filled up! 45 Balls for $5 or 90 balls for $7 (you can get a $100 range card for $80 in the pro shop. What I look for in a course is green speed and consistency. I can deal with poor fairways, rough, and tee boxes but inconsistent greens are an automatic two star rating. The greens at Boundary Oak are always consistent and some of the faster ones around. Especially when you are putting downhill away from Mt. Diablo! They are tough and require a keen eye, but once you play a couple times you can really start knocking some in as they roll really true. Three rounds ago I had 13 putts on the front side (then I started drinking)! The par fours are all relatively short; driver wedge in. But, if you spray your drive left or right you won't be out of bounds as the course is pretty open, but your approach will be blocked by trees. I type from experience :( The par 3's are great. First is a short downhill 140 yd shot, the second is an uphill 190 yard shot (always seems to play with the wind), the third is usually the same club you hit on the second, and the fourth is a longer 210-15 yard into a large green that I can't ever seem to hit. The par 5's are a good mix. First one is downhill dog leg left with bunkers pretty much in the landing zone in the dog leg. Green has water on the right and bunkers on the left. It is a challenging hole and very difficult to get in two. If you play it true you can usually have a nice wedge in to leave yourself with a make-able uphill putt. The second one is usually with the wind and downhill. Driver 4 iron/5 iron does the trick. The green is trippy though. It slopes from back to front, but the putts are faster going front to back as it is away from Mt. Diablo. The third par 5 is a beast dog leg right, trees everywhere and going for it in two is not really in the cards. The last is the finishing hole and again very hard to reach in two. It is a great experience and not too tough to walk. It can get slow after 11 on weekends, but it is usually fairly open for twilight in the middle of the week. I have yet to have a bad experience on this course and have played is 7 times since moving to the east bay in March. If you are looking for a fair test of your game this is the course to hone your skills for Bayonet, Blackhorse, Spyglass and the likes. It presents some challenges but it can really boost your confidence and teach shot making. Enjoy. My friends and I sure do. read more

First off this is a public course. That being said, golfers need to keep their expectation levels in check when playing here. We have played this course for a very long time, as groups, twosomes, and in tournaments. We have played with newbies, old-timers, women, juniors etc. ..the gamut of players with varying degrees of experience. Some we loved and some had no business being out there without a refresher course in golf 101! This course continually rates high on the list of top courses in California. But people should NOT mistake it for a private course. It's municipal and therefore at times; overcrowded, lacking good staffing (97% good employee's mixed with a few bad apples) and due to the drought has some natural problems with irrigation. It also borders on a HUGE open space area, so any type of animal complaint should be kept within the broader picture: yes their will be animals! They live there! We've seen deer, rabbits, squirrels, foxes & even a 12 foot rattler ( yeah don't venture into the high weeds in the dry hills, that's where they live!). As for the course itself. It offers varying degree's of difficulties and challenges. Both the greens & fairways offer competitive play. Be aware on the weekends and days on which play is heavy, some people do play here that don't seem to care how they treat the course. Scuff marks from golf shoes can be present (yes soft spikes), and un-repaired ball marks can be found much too often. AND YES we agree that a few more Marshalls are needed at times to enforce pace of place and course etiquette. But unless a Marshall is assigned to every grouping, we're not what the solution is on the issue's we mentioned. All and all though, this course is enjoyable. It offers the necessary challenges, it's normally relaxing and fun, and the prices are adequate for what is offered. Twilight rates are also good during summer's longer hours. We like the practice facility and respect the fact the ground crew/management is doing the best they can under the duress of the drought and it's effects. The fact that people have had delayed tee times or had to wait a bit at a tee box, we'd say golfing is privilege not a right, get over yourself. A day golfing, is still waaaaay better that a day working! :-) read more

Played this course on 7/31/11 at 6:30. The proshop was closed and no one was there to check anyone in. (Employee overslept?) I reserved the tee time online at playboundaryoak.com and entered my home phone #, email address and Credit Card information into the website. We were in a hurry after the round and decided not to go back into the proshop since they had my credit card info already. Keep in mind that it was only $42pp. The assistant PGA pro, Chris Falcone, sends me this accusatory email below and also leaves me a threatening message on my home # saying that we didn't pay for the round and what would happen if we didn't come to pay. " I am trying to track down the payments for your Sunday round here at Boundary Oak. Your group played as 4 players with 2 carts, and were asked by several staff members, both before and during your round to stop in the Golf Shop after your round. Please contact us as soon as possible. " The problem was that we walked and there was no one there to give us any carts even if we wanted to ride. There was no one there before the round started at 6:30. No one told anyone in our group that we needed to stop by the proshop to pay. We did talk to a marshall on hole #14 and the only thing he mentioned was that it was an unfair pin placement. When I call to see what the email and voice message is all about, he asks me in a very deragatory tone, "Do you normally play golf for free?". I explain that since you had my credit card # on the reservation and since there should be some record of carts being signed out, i thought you would just charge my card the walking rate. Right after i explain that we walked and how no one was there to check us in and that no one told us anything about paying afterward. He says that "We have from multiple sources that you rode a cart.and the marshall says he told you to go pay after". He follows this with "The superintendant made a log of players that tee'd off and yours was on the list.". I guess I am a liar! read more

These bad reviews must be from people that either do not golf often or the course was too much for them. First off its a nice looking course, hence why it keeps being awarded one of the top public golf courses in Northern California. You can tell it gets irrigated really well and the workers don't get in the way of play. Yes some Tee Boxes are a little roughed up. But its a lot better than 90% of the courses out there. The greens are very fast, nothing wrong with that. If it was very windy do you not adjust your swing? The pro shop is nice, and most of the workers are willing and open to answer any questions or help out. The prices for a sleeve is very reasonable. If you didn't come prepared in golf attire, they do have a clearance rack with a nice selection as well. Trying to get something to eat? You cannot pass up a breakfast burrito here. I promise you it will be the best one you have ever had. You get attended very quick and food is ready if you call it in from the turn. Great selection of beers, and the price for a pitcher that no one can beat (I am a bartender). The only drawback of this place is that it looks like it is still stuck in the 70s era. When you're on the course the cart girl is fully stock with extensive beers, especially 24oz cans as well as snacks. Overall experience is great. One of my favorite courses to visit. read more

Played it from the blues recently. It's a beast at 6700 yards with quick, true greens. It's a brilliant course and you better be on top of your game. Pin placements today were brutal, everything on a spine or ridge. The quick greens set this place apart from most courses in immediate East Bay. Every hole is different and a lot of elevated greens. If you think you are going to get well on the par 3s from the blues think again: 160 down hill, 175 uphill, 190 downhill and 200 even. One par 5 of 560 to an elevated green that bunkers surround. There just aren't that many easy holes here, maybe 2 or 3 but you still have to produce. I've noticed over the years that the place gets more and more popular. We were done in a foursome today in about 4 hours 45 minutes. It's a great challenge, check it out. About 35 to walk it mid-week. read more
