Bovino After Dark is one of the most unique dining experiences I've had in Atlanta. The intimate chef's counter gives every guest a front-row seat as each course is prepared and plated right in front of you. It creates an interactive atmosphere that feels personal and makes you appreciate the craftsmanship behind every dish. Before the tasting menu began, I ordered both the baked oysters and raw oysters. Both were incredibly fresh and a great way to start the evening. Throughout dinner, I enjoyed the Conde Valdemar Rioja Blanco from Spain, which paired beautifully with the meal. The tasting menu featured four thoughtful courses, each with its own personality. The Szechuan pork with green beans and Sungold tomatoes was a flavorful start with a nice balance of richness and freshness. The Alabama crab with yellow corn tamale and tomatillo was one of my favorite courses of the night. It was light, sweet, and beautifully balanced. The duck with kimchi bao, chanterelle gumbo, and okra brought deeper, more comforting flavors and was easily the boldest course on the menu. The hanger steak with red habanada peppers, chermoula, and potatoes was cooked beautifully and made for a satisfying finish before dessert. Dessert was a play on cereal and milk. Fruit Loops, mango, lime leaf, and fennel somehow came together into a dish that felt both nostalgic and refined. The entire evening was thoughtfully paced, the service was warm and welcoming, and watching the chefs work just a few feet away made the experience even more memorable. This is a delightful secret tucked inside Hop City right on the Beltline. The concept is a chef's table, with two seatings each night. We were there for Valentine's Day, when most restaurants raise the prices without offering anything really special. Not so here! We were treated to a five-course fixed price menu, and we both opted for the wine pairing. All wines were solid, with a couple that were truly good. Here, the real star was the food. The dishes were inventive and whimsical, a both my wife and I finished every dish. We didn't opt in for a six course, but it certainly wasn't because they hadn't earned our trust. We were just full! I personally love open kitchens, and it's a lot of fun to be able to interact with the chefs between courses. They are true rock stars. I hopped in here during their "Bovino Power Hour". More of a casual pre-game vibe. The kitchen staff were prepping for the evening's tasting menu, while serving a handful of guests around the counter. I opted for the Platter, to which we swapped out the 6 Salt Bombs for the Crispy Chicken Skins, to get a comprehensive feel of what BAD brought to the table. Crispy Chicken Skins: 1st one tasted slightly burnt, but the rest of them were on point. Ranch foam was delicious, but found the shaved celery out of place. I am also curious why they used Frank's Hot Sauce in this dish instead of creating their own hot sauce. Biggest feedback on this dish is to either use fewer skins in the dish, so that there is enough ranch foam to go around, or slice the skins smaller before crisping them, so that they are more dippable and the foam is more accessible. Or... use a plate, and offset the skins and the shave celery, so that everything has its own space. Stuffed Chicken Wing: Everything about this dish was perfection. The flavors. Texture. Aroma. Pairings with sauces. Moist. ***Chef's kiss*** Baked Oyster AL Crab: Another great dish. I would ensure that guests used the lime on them, as it balances the flavor profile. Not everyone knows that in a restaurant like this, if it comes with something, then you are supposed to use it. Dry Shrimp: I am torn on this dish. The sauce was absolutely amazing. The Thai Basil added to the aroma profile. The shrimp were good... but I wasn't excited or wowed by them. Being from MD though, I did love the little crab dish that they came in. Raw Oysters: Oysters are oysters. House made cocktail sauce and fresh horseradish were delicious. The small dripper bottle of pepper sauce was deceiving. I was expecting something super hot, but the Fresno pepper was very mild. They took Ritz and Saltine crackers and it looked like they cooked them more? LOL I wasn't impressed by them at all. I think there is something more that can be done here. Was offered a pairing of a sparking Rosé. It may have been a safe pairing for an early dinner, however, it didn't add anything to the experience. Caviar Bump: tasted like caviar. This is one of the coolest restaurant experiences I have had in Atlanta. My previous favorite was gunshow but this really gave it a run for its money. You get to watch the chefs put together each dish and then they come explain their inspiration for the dish. This was my favorite part because they created some crazy combinations of flavors I had never heard of before. It's located inside hop city so it's really laid back vibe where you can go grab a beer or you can bring in your own wine for a $20 corkage fee. For such high scale food, it is so cool that they are this laid back. I would highly recommend adding on the oysters and the intermezzo. We got half dozen oysters and they let us split half raw and half baked option which was awesome. They change the menu weekly so you can always go back and have a brand new flavor experience. This was such a fun experience overall! This pop-up restaurant has an interesting pre-fixe menu that changes from time to time. We went for their 5-course dinner as part of the celebrations for my friend's birthday. Every course was so beautifully plated and surprisingly tasteful! I love how deconstruror reimagined some of the dishes were. We also did the wine pairing which was nice. Minus one star as things were offered to us by our server at some point (eg, a small pour of a different sparkling wine) that we presumed were complimentary, however we learned it was an extra charge when the bill came, so it would have been nice if that was clearly communicated to us at the time they were being offered. read more

Let's dig in, I wish you could give 3.5 stars. I love and understand the concept here and can see the vision. However, I believe a few things can be tweaked. The seating is a L shaped bar, and we happened to be sitting at the connecting parts. In sitting at the connecting parts there's a large pole that blocks your entire view of the staff, so your only view is the pole. No one should have to sit there and ruin the experience. 1/5 All of the dishes had multiple components. In a course dinner the menu should build and be cohesive. I felt like the items didn't build, more so like every dish wanted to be the star. I also felt the majority of the food was cooked in advanced and was very lukewarm. The chicken wellington out of all the dishes was a 1/5. I would rate the remaining dishes in order rice noodle, beef confetti, fig cake, shrimp/crab cake, chicken wellington. The surprise dish was surprisingly good 3.5/5 but the caviar was undetectable. The staff were amazing! They seem to have an enthusiasm for explaining each dish, making sure you enjoyed the meal, explaining the idea behind the dish, and where the food was sourced locally. The service was good as well. We had to ask a few times for new silverware and based off our sitting, if you didn't walk all the way outside of the bar, it felt like they were reaching/stretching & gently tossing the silverware on the napkin (politely). Their dinner may be good but their brunch leaves much to be desired. I wasn't very impressed. Service was friendly but our server kept forgetting our order or forgetting to get what we asked for, despite us being one of two tables there. We had about a dozen oysters (~$3 each), shrimp cocktail, fried frog legs. The shrimp was $15 for 5... basically $3 each. I thought it was quite expensive for what you get. While the oysters were fresh, they were very small. Compared to what you get at places at optimist during happy hour, the value wasn't there. Frog leg was a bit dry and too chewy. Part of the dining experience is high quality craft cocktails to go with the high quality food. Instead your option is to go next door to a brewery and get a mediocre cocktail in a plastic cup. It really diminished the overall experience. Having said that, if cocktails aren't your thing, I 100% recommend this spot. The atmosphere was very cool. We had a great Valentines dinner at Bovino After Dark! Though I understand some reviews maybe not loving every dish, my overall experience was 5 stars. The dishes are creative and different, and some were amazing while others were a bit odd, which I would totally take to get the experience of a one of a kind dish! The big reason why I gave it a 5 was the care they had for my husbands allergies. He wanted to make sure I put in my review that this is the best place we've ever been for allergy accommodations. Not just slapping some other protein down or replacing with a random vegetable. Though they did not know which of us it was until we got there, the chef had clearly received the message and made special versions of the dishes ahead of time. For one dish, there was caviar (he's allergic to seafood), which was replaced by bubbles of onion purée. They even went so far to reduce the pricing because of the accommodation. Just an absolutely top-notch dining experience that I'd recommend to anyone looking for something different, fun, and adventurous. You have to be ready for anything because you pay in advance for your experience here, and the menu is always pre-fixe. You don't get to make many choices. But don't worry, everything they serve is amazing. I tried to capture the experience in photos, but to sum it up, you are seated at a bar facing the exposed kitchen (which is in the corner of Hop City's bar). So you get to watch each dish as chefs prepare it for you. They do two seatings each night (6 and 8pm), and you can either do wine pairings or order drinks from the Hop City bar. On the night we went, the courses were (very fancy versions of) deconstructed ramen soup, fried green tomatoes with mussels in an amazing peanut sauce, duck confit, beef and broccoli, and an incredible dessert of creme brulee with coffee ice cream. You could add additional courses like oysters (we didn't) or habanero ice cream with caviar (we did - it was savory and so interesting). The service was impeccable - they described every dish to you. You'll be blown away with the plates they put together and with the service they provide. This is a super intimate setting, a chef's counter. You're sitting at an open table that sits against the actual kitchen. You watch every single dish be prepared, cooked, and plated. Every week the dishes change and they are using what's in season. Five courses are $65. I would honestly spend over $100 for the quality and quantity of each dish. Location is in the back corner of Hop City. Plenty of free parking. Right on the BeltLine. I applaud their efforts for trying to provide a different experience for us foodies out there. The setup was nice - counter seats right in front of the kitchen and the staff and chefs were super friendly. Complete 5 star service. Unfortunately, the food was very disappointing... although visually appealing, the taste of all entrees were mundane, bland and served at room temperature. The wine pairing left a lot to be desired with four 3.5 ounce pours of mediocre wine for an additional $79 (maybe it was $59, can't remember). The only thing that was good was the desserts but the "special" dessert cost an additional $30. So after the cost of the meal, wine pairing add-on, special dessert, water (they charge for a sparkling water) and tip - it was more than $200/person. Perhaps we went on a bad menu night so maybe other menus will be better but there are many other places to get tastier dinners for $200. ps. if you list food allergies in your resy reservation, be sure to confirm they saw it. when we asked them, it was clear they were unaware - not sure if it's an issue with resy providing them the info or their lack of attention to it but best to confirm with them. read more

Best meal I've had in Atlanta, hands down. I keep thinking about it and its been a week. Every dish sounds like it shouldn't work but it always works. We're going again soon and will continue going until they start charging 3x-5x more because that's what the market value is for this quality food. It was so good that the lady next to us left two bites on one of her plates and we were still talking about it two days later. I went to this restaurant a couple weeks ago and was very excited about the opportunity to try something different. You have to commit and pay for the meal ahead of time even if the menu hasn't come out yet but I figured...hey let me take a risk. So here's my pros and cons list: Pros: -The vibe is cool. It's in a space that has another bar as well as a liquor store in there so that's different. -I love watching chefs cook just to see them in their element so sitting at the bar watching them work was fun to do. The seating was comfortable which I was worried about because the seats in the photos didn't have backs to them but they've upgraded since then. -Our host, Nathaniel, was extremely friendly and attentive -There were some interesting flavors on some of the dishes and the dessert for the most part was pretty good Cons: -Dinner was supposed to start at 6 but they didn't serve us anything to eat until about 6:40. There should be something ready for us to snack or nibble on while we watch the chef cook -The meal overall lacked cohesiveness and seemed like some random things they thought about making instead of trying to build flavors as you go along which is what is supposed to happen with a fixed menu. It lacked fresh notes and acidity to break up the flavors so everything felt a bit one note. -The upsell is REAL. It's like Spirit Airlines in there. From the moment you sit down everything is an upsell and you don't know how much anything is unless you constantly ask them how much extra that's going to cost you. Water, wine pairing (which was some very cheap wine), caviar bump, "special dessert" -Oh and at the end they said "don't worry about leaving a review, we don't know how to read them". I thought that was pretty interesting so I figured I would write a review. I love the concept and think in time they will get it together and fix some bumps but they are not there yet.
