The entire staff at this place is wonderful!!! My poor dog has an autoimmune disease and no one would take her near me for dentistry without charging a HUGE fortune or I left feeling uncomfortable with some level of knowledge or care I could expect in this unique situation. I never once felt this way with this place AT ALL.... This is a dog that almost died. Blue Pearl wanted to charge me $13,000 for a short stay when her disease started. If you find yourself in a Blue Pearl nightmare like I did RUN far and fast to Bowes Animal Hospital in Elgin, Rockford Emergency Hospital or Premier Ethos in the city of Chicago. Doctors are NOT GOD and I came into this situation with the reality my dog might not make it through surgery so my expectations were always extremely realistic. That being said, this group is competent, compassionate, transparent, knowledgeable and I highly recommend!!! It is a 2 hour drive for me one way. I will gladly drive out there next year for an annual checkup! These 3 places have literally kept this amazing creature alive and thriving. My baby's surgery was expensive but more affordable than what I was quoted in the city and felt way more confident about the competency of everyone at this animal hospital from the very beginning interactions, all the way through her surgery than some "other," places..... I am already in debt up to my eyeballs to keep this sweet little dog healthy. Everyone from the receptionists answering the phones to the techs and the doctors are incredibly kind and extremely competent. Love, love..... love this place!!! 22 teeth pulled and she is doing great!!! Thank you to all for taking such great care of my little Frida... I've been going to Bowes Animal Hospital for over 16 years -- even before Dr. Sonny took over -- and I wouldn't trust anyone else with my pets. My two tiny Maltese, Brinley and Baylin (only 3 and 4 pounds!), have always been treated with the utmost gentleness and care. Dr. Sonny is wonderful -- not only incredibly knowledgeable but also so warm and personable. He always remembers all our names, even though my girls look almost identical! Every doctor and staff member there is the same way: compassionate, kind, and truly dedicated. They've even called me on a Sunday with test results, which says everything about their commitment. Our French Bulldog developed a lump after a vaccination, which had been slowly growing over the course of six months. We finally decided to have it removed. On May 22, we came in for a pre-surgery consultation at this clinic, and the actual surgery took place on May 30. Naturally, I was very nervous about how my dog would handle anesthesia, especially since during his neutering (at a different clinic in Texas), he had a really rough time coming out of it -- disoriented and stumbling for almost a full day. But this time was completely different. I dropped him off in the morning and picked him up just four hours later -- and to my relief, he was already alert and doing much better than I expected. The staff was incredibly kind, gentle, and caring throughout the entire process. I want to give special thanks to Dr. Sunny Jain, who performed the surgery, and nurse Oksana, who kept me updated and even sent me photos of my dog as he was waking up from anesthesia. That level of care meant the world to me. Today, two weeks later, we came back to have the stitches removed. Oksana was just as professional and compassionate -- she cleaned the incision area, removed the sutures carefully, and gave me clear instructions on how to monitor and care for the wound. We've been bringing our pets to this hospital for years now, and once again, I'm extremely happy with the care we received. I really don't know what they did or gave him, but 3 days later we had to put a 7 year old cat that had no issues and his blood came back perfect. So we decided to look outside the city for the best care for our 13 year old lab. Everyone is super friendly, trustworthy and knowledgeable. It's definitely worth the hour + drive from the city to go to Bowes! I probably wouldn't travel that far for my own doctor but will do anything for my dog!! My 7 month old puppy started randomly throwing up & (what seemed to be) choking. I called my regular vet & they pretty much told me not our problem, take him to an emergency vet -- all closest emergency vets are within 20 minutes to a half an hour from me. Which is not feasible when you have a choking animal. I called Bowes animal hospital in a complete panic and they were able to get him in right away, even though he was not a client of theirs. The staff was extremely compassionate & understanding as i apologized for being such a mess on the phone. The doctor was beyond flexible and honest - which is hard to come by. He even offered to do an additional xray free of charge the following day if we did not have to take him to a specialty emergency vet for an endoscopy. We did end up having to take him to the emergency vet to have the endoscopy done that night, the doctor called the emergency vet and spoke with the doctor while we were on our way there, & made sure to have someone call us in the morning to check on my puppy - which my own vet did not even do. I cannot express how grateful we are for this doctor & his staff & very easily have made the decision that this is the vet we will continue to use for our 3 dogs. read more

We brought our 7 year old shorthair cat here to investigate the cause of a tail wound. My husband and I felt that we received sub-par care as the physician on duty just sent us home with some oral antibiotics and a cone. We later took him for a second opinion elsewhere and were shown that he had nerve damage to the tail and was a candidate for immediate surgery. We went through months of caring for his wound unnecessarily. Front Desk staff and nurses were friendly, but we will not be going back due to the apparent inexperience of the physician. read more

I am a first time dog owner and want to get my 5 month old shih tzu neutered. I have called numerous clinics for the best prices and normal clinics are about 300+. My second option was paws which was 175. However, going to PAWS I would have to get in line and it is first come first serve based (and probably pay for parking in the city). I also came across friends of animals spay a neuter program that some clinics participate in that is only 74 dollars. Most of the hospitals that participated in this had additional charges which would have added up to over 200 dollars. I am so grateful I called Bowes Animal Hospital and got to speak with Shannon. They have coupons right now that includes everything for neutering. She was so sweet and helpful. She was really informative about pain medication, antibiotics medication and the process of my puppy getting neutered. I felt like she really cared about my puppy and I even though we have not even met yet. Being a dog owner herself and having back ground information she gave me honest answers when I asked her about other clinics. She even gave me background information about the doctor at Bowes Animal Hospital which made me feel comfortable and confident in the doctor working on my puppy. I would rate zero with a large WARNING sign if it was available. My friend Sadie Belle died 40 minutes after being released from this vets care. She was taken in at 9am for a routine teeth cleaning. Sadie was overweight and 10 years old. I received a call at 11am and was told she was awake and doing fine, I should pick her up in an hour. Sadie was a nervous dog and panting to and from the groomer and vet was normal for her. She was panting when I got there and I considered it normal. This vet was not able to assess a nervous panting dog from one having difficulty breathing. I didn't either at first but I'm not a vet. They told me her throat might hurt from the tube put in her throat, that explained in my mind the raspy breathing. They said she could stumble from the pain medication, that explained her not being able to get up just before she died. I thought everything that happened had an explanation, it happened so fast. No matter what his excuse might be he failed to recognize a critical situation. Rest In Peace my sweet Sadie Belle. read more

I have been bringing my own dogs and many of my foster dogs to Bowes Animal Hospital for quite some years. What I love about this place is that they know their clients. It is not like a 'pull a number' environment as I experienced and hated it at Animal Care Clinic. Besides they are crabby people with snobby vets there anyways. At Bowes Animal Hospital the one vet tech would give more than her last shirt to save ANY animal that crosses her path and the other one, equally compassionate, is such a hoot, that I actually like going there, instead of dragging these appointments. They do well in not overbooking, so there is little to none wait time and being a small business owner myself, I find their prices really reasonable. Dr. R. is very calm and friendly with the dogs that I bring there and those are mostly some scary looking heavy canines. If you get to know him a bit better, he can actually be quite funny too. This is what you want, a professional personality that is still human and in the business to help animals. I do not think I am an easy client. I come with foster dogs that are in bad shape and I ask a lot of questions. This place listens to my concerns and works with me on the treatment that I am comfortable with. Unfortunately, I had to have them help me put a rescue dog to rest and while that was super hurtful, I could not have been in better hands. They made the process as easy and peaceful as possible. I made a super difficult appointment to have my cat put down and discussed on the phone problems with my 12-year old cat who pees on everything and he has done so for years. My partner and I worked for years to fix the problem. We have not been able to have company in our house since we moved in 3 1/2 years ago because cat has ruined wood floor, mattress, curtains, furniture. He pees on the dining room table, kitchen counters, stove, food, bed, all rugs, any clothing or items left on floor, the glass sliding door, corners, the wall, I explained we took him to the vet and we tried pheromones, extra litter boxes, I got cans of compressed air with sensors, and he just goes other places. It is the cat's mission in life to pee on things when we aren't looking. We never abuse him. We understand it is a problem. We can't do rescue because he is too old, too spoiled, and it would be horrible for him. I got an appointment for today and it was a horrible week. I cried all day before taking him in. It was explained when I got there, they won't put down a cat that isn't sick. So why did they make an appointment and let me and my cat go through this after I told them he wasn't sick? This is unthinking and uncaring. The only suggestion I got was to release him for rescue (again). Torturing him so I can buy rugs and live a normal life is not my idea of a solution. I cuddled with this cat and loved him for years. I got no other suggestions. I was crying and turned around and walked out. Glad I left the cat in the car so he didn't need to go through vet hospital trauma for no reason. I hate this place. read more

My kitten had a sore throat so I brought her in since this place is so close to my house. When the vet was checking her out he decided to also clean her ears after he told me that she had a sore throat and prescribed antibiotics to me. When I received the bill, I saw that he charged $18 for the ear cleaning! He never asked if it was okay, or let me know I was going to be charged for this. I can clean her ears at home! This had nothing to do with why I even brought her in. I felt like I was being scammed. Never going back. read more

We have been taking both our dogs here for a couple of years. I love Doc and Ericka. Recently we took our dog in for a teeth cleaning our dog had back surgery for a herniated disc so I was very nervous about taking her because one wrong move could shatter another disc. I cannot say enough good things about the staff at BAH. I have 3 special needs dogs and they take care of them lovingly and is so patient with them. They are very caring and kind to them. They make me feel like part of the family. Very warm to walk in there. Always helpful. They always have specials going on as well. I believe Dr R became a vet to do good by animals and their families, and Erika is always a pleasure to work with. They make a great team and am so happy to have found them.
