Bowood Farms is my go-to for almost all things plants. Is it because I'm a sucker for the aesthetics? Maybe. Does it help that it's walking distance from home? Perhaps. Regardless, I appreciate that they have a great selection of plants, and I particularly love shopping their small plants selection. They have a pretty solid batch of what's in season for a more affordable price, and I've had much better luck raising them as opposed to their bigger plants. The staff is knowledgeable and efficient. They also have workshops and plenty of supplies, so it's a nice one-stop shop (and I'm trying to keep this review separate from their restaurant). Their pots selection is also generally good, although they can be just as seasonal as the plants. Overall, I recommend checking out Bowood Farms, if not just for the nice little stroll. read more

No matter the season, the venue and menu always match the vibe. Heather Lindsey is a 10/10 server and bartender -- she consistently makes great company, especially when I don't feel like enjoying a lonely meal. My go-to favorites are the cold salmon Caesar salad, crab Benedict, the Reuben sandwich, and the pancakes. As for drinks, you really should try everything at least once, but the Bloody Mary and the cucumber gin mint never disappoint. I've been coming here for years -- originally drawn in and warmly welcomed by their hospitality manager, Chris, while meeting with the owner of another restaurant, and I've stayed ever since. I've celebrated birthdays, anniversaries, and personal accomplishments here (back when they also served dinner), and I've never once been disappointed. This is such a fun and interesting venue. Walking in to a restaurant through a plant nursery and gift shop is as unique as it gets. The food is quality with breakfast items and lunch. Might make a reservation as the dining space is limited, but such a bright and cheery spot. Moderate prices, but you get what you pay for( good way). There seemed to be some hesitation about seating our party, with mention of multiple reservations for four coming, understandable, except none appeared to arrive during our visit. When bar seating became available, it wasn't offered to us initially, we asked for it, and as we left after our meal, we weren't acknowledged or greeted by the host. I did the egg Benedict it was good presentation was great. I loved the fresh flowers, service was very attentive and polite. We did honey bun for starter good but cold. Suggestion for Bowood: the honey bun had me all excited! Please warm it up before giving it to the customer that would of set it off to a whole new level. I went to the cute cafe inside this plant shop. The interior was super open and clean, had a bit of an industrial feel to it. &The dining area was very nice - booth/table/bar seating available. Street parking. I started strong with a baileys latte, and ordered the eggs Benedict and blueberry pancakes for the table. Both were great. The side salad was super refreshing, and the potatoes were satisfying. The eggs Benedict themselves were amazing, especially with some crystal hot sauce. The blueberry pancakes are one of my friend's favorite items on the menu, and I can confirm it was a win. Service was very quick and friendly, and I'd easily come here again. read more

We parked on the street and we had a reservation for 6 pm. We brought our child and they were very accommodating. They have a prix fixe menu and we tried some very fresh dishes! Bowood Farms posts breathtaking photos on social media that make me really wish that I could keep anything green alive for more than a month or two. I love scrolling through all the photos of trendy looking plants that would make my house feel so much more alive. I've been yearning to add a Pilea peperomioides to my plant gang. More commonly known as Chinese money plant, I figured this plant that only needs to be watered every 10 days was a perfect fit. Bowood Farms is a far cry from the garden centers at big box hardware stores. Walking in, I was a tad intimidated by not only the hipster/Pinterest vibe but also the sheer amount of plants they had. And that was just the inside sales floor! The employees of Bowood Farms were incredibly friendly. While I was moseying around trying to find the plant i so badly wanted to make my own, a worker asked if I needed help. At first I wanted to play it cool and pretend I "belonged" by saying I was doing just fine. In a moment of panic I ignored my bravado and asked for his assistance. But then I forgot the plant's name! I feverishly navigated to social media so I could find a photo of the plant, apologizing over and over again. But the employee was a trouper! He jokingly let me know he was "there until 5. No rush." Finally I found the photo and he immediately identified it for me. I totally expected him to point in the direction of the plant, but he walked me over and showed me the four inch and six inch options. Next came the pressure of finding a pretty pot to house my new plant. There were so beautiful options! A sign let me know that there were even more pots outside. Wow so many incredible pot options to choose from. Literally every possible color. Every size. Every shape. Bowood Farms really had me covered. The one thing besides an incredible selection that I loved about Bowood Farms was the expertise the employees offered. I was curious about planting an additional (different) plant in the same pot as the Pilea, and asked one worker if he could suggest a plant that would play nice in the same pot. He said the Pilea would be more than enough in one pot once it matures. The salesman who helped me checkout taught me a bit about the fact that the Pilea needed a well drained pot because "his feet don't like to be wet." What a great way to put it into layman's terms. My overall fear of planting was really eased by my experience at Bowood Farms. I'm really looking forward to going back and purchasing some more plants for my backyard and to grab brunch at their restaurant, Cafe Osage. read more

This place is the cutest. Reminds me a bit of the Waco vibe of Chip and Joanna however they are unique. Nice nursery with both indoor and outdoor plants and decor. The restaurant has a great menu and the brunch was fabulous. We came on a Saturday late morning. They were just starting to get busy. We were seated immediately. The ambiance is great. Nicely decorated. The food was great. If your in the area it's something to put on your list for sure. I enjoyed this more than the arch. Hahah! Oh and there is a bar with alcohol and coffee! YAY! Recently had the pleasure of a kusamono planting class and had a wonderful time. They will deliver and plant your selections for you. They also have different classes you can take. I recently took a class on how to mount and care for a staghorn fern. It was fun and informative. I purchased a Dolphin succulent hanging plant from Bowood Farms in January and was very disappointed to discover the plant was infested with mealy bugs. I contacted the manager for an explanation how this could happen. His response was to spray it with insecticide but he did not think that it would recover. I have multiple succulents that are thriving in my home however, this plant did not. Therefore, I don't recommend purchasing succulents plants at this location..waste of money! read more

What a treasure this nursery is. I stumbled upon it due to getting turned around in the neighborhood. All the plants were gorgeous, healthy and lush. I found some really unique things to help take my landscaping project to the next level. My only complaint is that I believe that I was overcharged. My receipt said size 3 container but my plants were a miniature size. I don't think they were marked properly. $144.78 for 3 miniature (quart size) plants didn't seem correct. I live out of town, so I couldn't make it back to the store & as I checked out that day there was a fire on the street adjacent to the nursery & everyone was rushing to get out as the smoke was quickly taking over the area. Pretty amazing selection in the midst of St. Louis City. The space is a wonderful old factory building of some sort. The non-plant merchandise is tightly curated and high quality. There are pots and vases, a small selection of books, gardening tools, crystals, wrapping paper, and more. Houseplants and succulents are in the main building. There are two courtyards of landscaping plants, trees, herbs, and larger pots. In the heat of August, there was still a good selection of plants! I got a gift certificate for my neighbor who loves this place. I didn't eat here, so can't speak to that, but the farm part of Bowood is great! read more

Yes, this place is a bit pricey. But every part of this store is so beautiful and you can really tell that the people who work here care about the plants. I've bought a total of four succulents here. They're still doing really well. This is saying a lot because I have killed one too many succulents. I really think it's because they're in good/proper soil and well maintained before they are sold, which makes them easier to maintain at home because they are in good condition already. (I've bought succulents from places like Walmart, and although some of them are still with me, I find that these die very quickly on me.) I also bought a few supplies for a party that I threw for my daughter. The girl at the register was super helpful and ran around trying to help me get the pricing on everything. I ended up getting a cupcake decorating set, some ribbons, and a paper garland. Everything ended up working so beautifully. All in all, I know it's pricey. But you're paying for the quality and the service. And I think it's definitely worth it. Which is why I continue to come back! read more

Bowood Farms is not your typical nursery/landscaping store. Sure, it has a nice selection of indoor and outdoor plants, flowers and trees, it's well-stocked with seeds and supplies and containers. It's even got books to help you figure out what to grow, whether you've got a huge lot or a postage stamp-sized patio. It's true, a lot of stores offer those things. Bowood, however, also offers free speakers and programs to help you become a more successful gardener--and they have FOOD. I'm a major sucker for both gardening and food, so I'm totally sold on the place. Right now they offer bison that's pasture-raised on their farm in Clarksville; they're also hard at work on getting the Bowood Cafe up and running. In addition to serving bison from their Clarksville farm, the cafe will offer produce from their garden across the street and herbs grown on their rooftop--it doesn't get much more local than that! Justin and I had the chance to attend a program featuring Diane Whealy of Seed Savers Exchange and learn a bit about heirloom gardening and biodiversity this weekend; we're already looking forward to the Creative Composting class in April. Such wonderful resources for FREE! And they have heirloom seeds and compost containers available at the store (not for free, of course). :) Even if you're not planning on buying a ton of plants or becoming a Master Gardener, Bowood Farms has tons to offer--educational and practical programs, plenty of things to inspire even the most inexperienced gardener... and coming soon, wonderful locally grown food to fill your belly! From the moment you enter the front door you know you're somewhere special. The seasonal displays, colorful pots and watering cans, christens games and educational plant books, and employees cleaning and offering help to customers. Now all this greatness comes at a price and you could save a bit by visiting Home Depot or Lowes but you won't find a selection like this and knowledgeable employees anywhere else. Upon my most recent visit and the writing of this review it's turning in to the fall season quickly. Mums and pumpkins are everywhere along with some sale prices on spring and summer plants and accessories. This is really more of a four-parcel location. The inside shop, the outdoor annuals and water features area (where there are also tables set up for Osage, the adjoining restaurant), the large plants and landscaping office across the alley to the north, and the large perennial and tree yard across the alley to the west. Every area was displayed and cared for perfectly. We just picked up a few things and spotted some trees we'd love to get if they go on sale. We'll surely be coming back for unique seasonal items and hopefully a Ginkgo Biloba tree at some point. With beautiful spaces and friendly smiling employees it's a pleasure to just drop by and browse if you're in the area. I'd have given a full five stars if prices were a bit more reasonable but I'm also aware a shop and employees like this are a premium. read more

Not as impressed as everyone else. Yes, it has a fabulous retail space and the merchandising and selection of the plants is great. What the down side is, most of their plants are overpriced and not all employees are as knowledgeable as you'd hope. In fact, some of them are down right aloof. Keep talking to the various people working, you'll find one who knows the answer. When shopping here, be sure to know the market price, especially if you are doing a large project. We did find a couple very unique plants for our front retaining wall and paid the inflated price. However, all the other plants we were considering we found at other city nurseries at a noticeably lower price. When you are buying in volume, it does add up quickly. I will still continue to shop the nursery here, it just will not be my go to one. I look forward to returning to experience the restaurant. read more

Over the past 2 years I have purchased indoor plants and dried foliage. The warehouse is really cute and their plants are always amazing. They are a little pricey but my first experience was so great it made up for the price. The customer service has seemed to dwindle a bit since last year. My first experience was inviting and enjoyable and the employee that assisted me was very knowledgable offered care tips etc etc. The employees on my most recent trips were matter of fact, not really helpful or engaging. The overall energy from my most recent shopping experience was blah I even experienced the same exact feeling at the gift shop. Not sure what their company culture is now but definitely needs some revamping. I am a relationship based buyer and the most current employees don't facilitate that. read more

Lets' face it, most gift shops are boring and full of clutter. Bowood has a the perfect selection of gifts. And if you don't want your typical gift, then get them a plant. I first came here looking for some shrubs to add winter interest to my garden and they had a great selection in their outdoor courtyard. I also love that they have a vast selection of contemporary planters for indoor and outdoor plants. The employees are very kind and asked if I needed help with anything while I was there. I'd love to meet the buyer for this shop! It's stocked with the cutest, most tasteful trinkets. Since I'm so fond of Cafe Osage, it's difficult not peruse the nursery and shop while I'm there. I'm not an avid gardener, but I've been known to hoard little succulents and potted plants for our loft. Bowood is my favorite source, albeit a little expensive. They carry Rifle Paper Co. stationary, lots of indie cards, unique gift wrap, feminine bags, jewelry, and accessories, lovely little body products, adorable children's stuff, and anything you'd need for your garden. It's a local, better version of Anthropologie/Terrain with the occasional cat or dog charming its patrons. An area for improvement would be the service. I've always been able to have my basic gardening questions answered, but I can't say the staff has always been warm and friendly. Bowood Farms is still one of my top places to shop for gifts (and myself!) and I'd recommend it to any lady near the Central West End. read more

I was in there a bit ago, and for whatever reason, was profiled as a shoplifter by the employees. I am not a shoplifter, just artsy and alternative-looking, I suppose, but this is the only place this has ever happened. One of the employees stayed no more than three to four feet away from me the entire time I was there, pretending to rearrange merchandise and such. No joke. Absurd and humiliating. Obviously the customer service does not justify the grossly overpriced plants, and I will not be back. read more

I came in to look for dried flowers and three or four plants for my new apartment hoping that someone working could help me find the right plants for my needs. I walked in and was given blank stares by about 5 employees who were just standing around the bar talking and 3 garden shop employees just paying absolutely no attention. No one greeted me or asked if I needed any help during the ~30 mins i was in there. I even hovered around where the employees were standing hoping someone might finally say something to me. The selection of plants were beautiful if a little pricey. I bought one plant. Even though I was prepared to spend a lot of money, I didn't feel comfortable supporting a business when the costumer service felt so blah. It was truly an uncomfortable shopping experience.
