i came here upon recommendation from a friend via photo. their croissants are picture-perfect. the interior is cute, but not super cozy. they have some outdoor seating too. within 3 days, i ended up coming here twice to try everything they had to offer. the first time, i arrived around noon on a thursday. they were sold out of most sweet breakfast-adjacent offerings. i ended up trying the s'mores cupcake, chocolate strawberry cupcake, almond horn, and pb&j cruffin (last one). the cupcakes were good as far as cupcakes go. they weren't too sweet, and the strawberry frosting didn't taste overly jammy. i wish there was some sort of filling, because they suffered from being a tad dry. the pb&j cruffin had plenty of filling (oozing out after one bite) and the pastry was super flaky. the almond horn was executed perfectly. while i enjoyed my first trip, i really wanted to try some of their croissant options, so i ended up going again at 7:15 the next saturday. the second time, i got the boston cream croissant cup, the strawberry cheesecake danish, and the maple pecan sticky bun. all of these pastries were EXCELLENT. it is hard to rank them, but the boston cream was probably my favorite. i could eat 10 of them. the maple pecan sticky bun was still warm. this is easily my favorite bakery in the state and i love their fun takes on classic pastries. my boyfriend, who is notoriously VERY stingy with his ratings, would also give them an easy 5 stars. this will be a mandatory stop every time i'm back in state. read more

I got a latte and while the syrup flavor was good, the rest of it was unfortunately no better than I'd get using one of those commercial machines you see in airport lounges. Stopped by just to see what they had as we were exploring Essex Junction and ended up finding too many good treats. The display case was just too pretty and drew us in. The first time we went, we got a Boston cream Croissant cup which was a big hit. The next time we got a variety of cookies. Particular standouts were the corn cookie and ginger cookie. If there would have been more time, it may have been worth a third visit for an ice cream sandwich. I guess next time we're in the area. read more

I recently went to Boxcar for the first time, and then again for a second time and let me tell you their coffee is DELICIOUS! I got a lavender latte which is so hard to find elsewhere, and they have EXCELLENT baked goods they make fresh right there which are decorated the absolute cutest! The whole atmosphere is so cozy and inviting, and the staff are always so friendly. 11/10 recommend! Def my favorite bakery in the area now read more

I'm giving it one more star having visited recently. The baked goods are a little hit or miss, but I was happy with what I got last time. The person who served me before wasn't there, which was also an improvement... I do wish they had a few more outlets... it's basically a brightly lit room with plain tables and not much ambiance. If you sit near the front people will be all up in your grill waiting to be served. But the main thing is the children. I'm not sure why, but this place fills up with families, so the chill cafe vibe just isn't happening with the kids and the screaming. It's not constant, in fairness, nor is it all day, but if this isn't for you and you're planning to stay a while with a book or laptop, I recommend you go somewhere else. read more

I've been living and working in the Essex junction area for close to two years now and Box Car is a go to for me. I love taking family members and out of town friends there to enjoy the airy digs and yummy pastries and coffee. I lived in Brooklyn during college and it reminds me of some of the cute cafes I'd find around the neighborhood. read more

The place itself is very nice, clean, and roomy. They have a large selection of baked goods and if you peek in the back it seems that they have a whole bakery set up. Their coffee is pretty good just a bit strong for my liking and their flavoring is a bit lacking. Their service is pretty decent as well. Just be prepared to wait a very long time in line. When I went with a friend we tried the coffee cake and the pecan sticky bun. The coffee cake was excellent but I wasn't a huge fan of the sticky bun.
