    Iced latte with maple syrup
    Erika H.

I will start by saying this has been one of the best sandwiches I have ever had. We had the Vermonter. I wasn't too excited about it at first because I don't like fruits in my sandwiches, but the apples in this sandwich blended in so perfectly. We ordered two lattes. One was iced and the other was hot and both had the maple syrup flavor. I wasn't a big fan of how the coffee tasted, but it could have been the flavor I got. I did go to Stowe the first week of October, which might explain why so many people were inside the coffee shop, and why we had to wait 45 mins for two coffees and a sandwich. It was $36 for the three things ordered. I did think it was pricey, but the sandwich was worth it. The inside is pretty spacious with lots of seating and there's also seating outside. It's located right across the Stowe community church and it's surrounded by cute shops. The staff was friendly and tried their best to accommodate the large crowd and worked as fast as possible. If I am ever in Stowe again, I would come back here!

P.S. Overall a bit expensive. $7.80 for a maple latte!!! Plus there is a water for drinking.

The hot chocolate was good. I had asked for only marshmallows and no whipped cream but I got it anyway-tasty though. The sandwich was meh. It supposed to be warm but only the bread was toasted. The turkey and ham were cold. It wasn't bad just not what I was expecting. Tables weren't really clean. Signs on doors talking about what employees had gone on strike-weird. Place could be much better-needs fixed up and a bit of a cozier vibe for a coffee spot.

Delicious maple latte! Charming little spot in the center of town. Would I say it's as standout as The Roastery nearby? Not totally, but it's such a good fix in the morning when you want something convenient. Homemade baked goods made each day, and their maple bun is really good, especially when they warm it up.

Black Cap Coffee and Bakery was a great stop. The staff was friendly and welcoming, and the maple latte was on point. I somehow resisted the dessert case, but everything looked incredible and I'll definitely be back for it next time. Posting a pic because it deserves the attention.

Excellent service staff, Americano was terrific, as worthy breakfast sandwiches. They are very generous with the use of avocado!

There are two bistro tables out on the porch for alfresco coffee enjoyment. Service staff are friendly and able. Americano was terrific, overall quite pleased, not to be at Starbucks almost directly across the street. Love the knotty pine flooring, especially because as a Californian, we don't see much of this.

Overall solid experience here! Definitely a cute downtown spot in Stowe, great for grabbing a coffee or a quick bite before perusing nearby shops. There is a good amount of seating as well which made it easy to sit down and warm up for half an hour before facing the cold! We ordered a large coffee, large Maple latte, and a cinnamon bun roll. The coffees and pastry were delicious -- no complaints about taste at all. The cinnamon bun was thick and the frosting was a perfect balance of sweet and flavorful. I will definitely be ordering it again when I return. My only critique is that the latte price was very steep compared to other local spots. A latte is nearly $10 if you add a flavor or milk alternative. The latte tasted great, but I don't think it warranted a $10 price tag. I would suggest the coffee shop either adjust the price, or for patrons to consider a regular coffee instead. Other than prices, I would definitely recommend!

    Latte and Chocolate Croissant

Employees are friendly and service was fast. Plenty of seating in this cute cafe. The breakfast burrito was excellent and my wife loved her Chocolate Croissant. I hope to be back next time we're in Stowe.

    Almond joy latte

I wish this place was a little cozier, but over all pretty good, and was open later than other coffee shops. I got the almond joy latte which was good.. it's a little pricy but so are most things in Stowe.

Apple crumb cake and maple latte

The maple latte house favorite was delicious (I got it with oatmilk) and the apple crumb cake, chocolate croissant, and maple horn were enjoyed by the whole family. Highly recommend!

    Maple Croissant
    Brenna D.

The Maple Croissant tasted like a flakey pancake, it was out of this world! The line to get up to order was less than ideal, waited almost 30min just to order and then it took about 10-15 to get our coffee and food. If it's not busy, I recommend going but it wasn't worth the almost 40min wait time.

Awesome coffee, awesome vegan friendly breakfast - with just egg, and chorizo. Looooong lines, so timing it is very important.

Egg with cheese and bacon on an English muffin. Small cup o' Joe.

Ambiance is really cute, great menu, service was subpar, drinks tasted water down and it was overpriced. $31 for 2 coffees and a pastry.

This place was on our way to our first destination this morning and we said screw it, let's give a try, Ooof!! we would've have a better tasty breakfast at McDonald's for half the cost. Yep!! This place is actually really pricey for the quality of food you get here. I ordered the egg, cheese sandwich on a biscuit (because we always like to try the local restaraunt's biscuits) and I added their maple sausage. I wanted to get an almond croissant as well until I saw a fly in the pastry cabinet just have his way on all the pastries. NOPE!! This was probably one of the worse breakfast sandwiches I have ever had to date. The biscuit itself was hard as a rock, dry and crumbled upon touch. It was lousy as heck. The maple sausage was a thick patty, but small, almost like a quarter size round compared to the size of the biscuit. So for what sandwich and a cup of coffee was around $23. Heck no! Was that even worth it with how bad inflation is these days Not sure how they have such high ratings, but just be warned. You're welcome!

My love for this place will never wane even though it's already so popular that it gets completely…read moreslammed every day during the period that is winter break for surrounding school systems -- and probably many other times as well. I love that they're socially conscious and really care about social justice and the environment. - They compost.* My pup discovered this after we emerged from a trail next to the back of the bakery. She found all this very scientifically interesting. - They serve in house with reusable metal utensils and plates, which you return to the counter. - They're committed to sourcing organic, sustainably produced flour from a few family-run farms. - Takeout containers (and I feel awful when having to use these at times) are waxed cardboard -- maybe professionally compostable or recyclable, but I suspect not. Still, better than plastic. Eat in if you can. Someday I'll remember to bring my own containers and see if they'll use them. The bread is world class. We've probably tried almost every loaf at this point. They tend towards being traditional styles with robust crusts and a good, slow, cold rise -- breads that take time to make. Our preferences lean towards the sourdoughs, the miche-type loaves, anything with olives, and the potato breads (for those of us with old teeth or missing baby teeth). But everything you could possibly order will be amazing. We loved the beautiful pain d'epi most recently, though the 10 year old (who doesn't have a full set of chompers right now) found it tough to consume without a good dip in Mom's stew at the end of the day. The only version my family cited as more beloved was from Maison Kayser -- yes, a chain, but a very good one where my kiddos literally cut their teeth. Pastries are shockingly good as well, particularly the laminated ones that someone must be getting up at 2 or 3 a.m. to prepare. Chocolate croissants and almond croissants are perfectly layered, generously filled with high quality chocolate (real chocolate, not Nutella!) or almond paste filling that is even good when cold. The "simplest" of pastries (not really at all simple for anyone's whose tried to make these), a plain croissant, will wow a purist. My kiddos love the perfectly frosted maple bun visit after visit. Savory pastries are often filled with beautifully caramelized / browned onions, cheese, and other ingredients depending on the whims of the chefs. Again, I don't think you can go wrong; we certainly never have. There are decent sandwiches and salads on the menu (from the perspective of the spoiled). Nothing is groundbreaking, but they're 200% competent and ingredients are consistently excellent. A recent Harvest Salad, for instance, included fresh and tender butter lettuce, winter squash roasted to tender perfection, nuts and dried fruit in perfect balance. We'd had about 10 different "harvest salads", in the past few weeks in VT at that point, but though this one was more simply designed than many, it was more delicious, given the impeccably fresh, high quality ingredients. We sometimes get here on the earlier side, but never seem able to score a breakfast sandwich, which seems to sell out fast. We like the down-to-earth staff, who smile when they mean it and don't when they don't -- and show fatigue when they need to and ought. I love that the management appears to be humane, opening later than usual when an ice storm makes driving conditions perilous. We recognize some staff members from some years past and we like the continuity a lot. Love the entire picture. All of it. * I just read that all VT households and businesses are required to compost per a state law passed in 2020. Cool! Red Hen seems to have a great sorting system set up, though, with many neat, well maintained bins lined up out back.

It's always been busy when I've gone, but wait times aren't very long and the staff is pleasant. Needless to say, I got home and inhaled my turkey on a baguette. The only thing I think is a little bit of a bummer is the lack of more "traditional" topping options. I like my sandwiches with lettuce, tomato, and onion. The cafe does not offer tomatoes and only has pickled onions. Would be nice to have a little more choice when building your own sandwich. That said, I'm still a big fan and would get food from there again in a heartbeat.
