I've passed by this place many times, not knowing it was a Bar. I usually come here to eat at La Maceta, the red food truck directly across the parking lot but this time they said we could eat inside the bar since we purchase food. Once we went inside to sit, we noticed the great music playing from the DJ, basketball game on all the TVs, and cute decor, like the full length mirror with the selfie light outside the bathroom door, the neon booty sign, and a photo booth with photo wall. Service was great. We were serve drinks immediately and they were strong. I got a don Julio & pineapple, and more tequila shots later! Fun place, good drinks, music & vibes!

Decent time on our second visit. It was a much different vibe this time around. Our first visit we were able to select from a few signature cocktails and everything seemed much more upscale for a sports bar. The bartenders had a good vibe and were truly craftsman in what they were doing. This time around was different. When my wife asked for a signature cocktail menu the bartender seemed confused. She also seem too busy to speak with us even though we could see she wasn't. We ordered two gin and tonics that were whatever. The DJ was great though and was still a fun way to end the night. I just think this place could keep it's more upscale vibe and create itself as a destination and not a pit stop. Just saying.

Grabbed a drink with some friends here on a rainy Sunday. Great place to go and catch a game. Friendly service!

We only stopped by for drinks and I was pleasantly surprised to be carded at the door. Thank you for making me feel young! Inside is small, slightly intimate. The bartenders were very chill. A great selection of liquor behind the bar, but I chose one of the house drinks. The QR code on the table has an updated menu, not currently found online. I wish I could remember the name of my drink - superb choice, though. We stayed about an hour and music was starting right before we left. If I didn't have to catch a 0545 in the morning I would have stayed longer. Will definitely return; love the vibe!

Guinness on tap, poured correctly with great service, you can't ask for more. Nice relaxing atmosphere with good parking, so important in SA.

Cool bar that we meet some friends at Alamo Beer and decided to check out these places nearby for mixed drinks. Walked in and bartender knew my friend's little sister. He set us up with some drink specials that were all really good. The price here is good with a little patio area to enjoy the evening. Liked this place and would visit again.

Boxcar Bar has been open for a little while and I've been eagerly waiting for the chance to make it in for Happy Hour. Boxcar has the same owner as The Green Lantern in Stone Oak and it was nice to see some of the same bartenders working there. As the name implies, Boxcar has a train theme going on inside. Located right next to the railroad tracks the trains go by several times an hour. It's a cool experience to sip cocktails and watch the trains. Happy Hour is nightly from 4-9pm and features crafted cocktails as well as beer and wine. Whatever your liquor preference the bartenders here can create a crafted cocktail to your liking. Both Ryan and Daniel make an an excellent old fashioned and for $6 on happy hour makes it the best value in the city. I'm glad I was finally able to make it here and look forward to coming back sooner rather than later.

Cool staff and a nice place to unwind after a days errands. They make the drinks exactly as you like. I've never been a regular at a bar but I am now.

Graffiti from all over the nation can be seen whizzing by from within this pristine bar, but there's more to this drinkery than its namesake view of the tracks. They have clean bathrooms, booths, and a patio where a decent sundown over the city can be soaked up on a nightly basis. The center bar always has at least one talented bartender wearing a pork pie hat who can both mix the potions and tell a tale or two.  Things are near perfect, except for the uncomfortable hour that occurs between leaving work and Boxcar's 6pm opening.

Great place to enjoy good vibes and amazing fresh and innovative drinks. House made infused drinks that are made fresh and with love by the talented bartenders. It's not your usual run of the mill pre made drinks that downtown San Antonio is accustomed too. Fresh fruit and flowers compliment the sophisticated drinks that bring your taste buds to life without using overwhelming "bottom shelf" liquor. The prices are reasonable and make sure to tip the staff that go that extra mile to make sure you have high quality drinks in your glass. Cheers!

Came in with a large group for happy hour. The space was big enough to accommodate all of us! The service was friendly as well. They have such a great happy hour from 4-9 with $6 cocktails like the cucumber martini, palomas, old fashioned, etc. Improvements: It would be awesome if they expanded their menu to include some sort of food/apps

So I went to Bar 1919 in Southtown, a tucked-away speakeasy-style bar. I'd heard it could be difficult to find, and that mystery is part of the charm. Once I stepped inside, I was struck by how polished and inviting it felt: low amber lighting, dark wood, intimate seating, and a quiet hum of conversation that made the room feel removed from the rest of the city. The atmosphere was elegant without feeling stiff. The dim light glowed against the bar, and the cozy layout made it easy to settle in. There was something satisfying about searching for the entrance and then emerging into such a carefully designed space. [NAME] took care of me, and the service was warm and attentive. I was there by myself, but I never felt awkward sitting alone. The bartender checked in without hovering and made the experience feel relaxed from beginning to end. He also made me a from-scratch cocktail. [COCKTAIL NAME/INGREDIENTS] The drink was beautifully balanced, with [YOUR WORDS ABOUT THE TASTE/QUALITY OF THE DRINK]. The aroma rose from the glass before the first sip, and the flavors unfolded gradually rather than overwhelming one another. It tasted fresh, deliberate, and carefully prepared. I also had [FOOD], and [YOUR WORDS ABOUT THE FOOD]. The dish arrived [DESCRIBE PRESENTATION OR TEMPERATURE], with [DESCRIBE TEXTURE, AROMA, OR FLAVOR]. Bar 1919 was exactly what I needed that night: a small escape with thoughtful service, a handcrafted drink, and satisfying food. The hidden entrance gives it a sense of discovery, while the intimate setting makes it easy to linger. Excellent idea.

The Modernist -- A True Speakeasy Experience in San Antonio…read more If you're in downtown San Antonio, take a break from the River Walk and check out The Modernist. This is a true speakeasy-style lounge that's easy to overlook from the outside--it looks like a regular, unassuming place. But once you step inside, the atmosphere completely changes. The interior is cozy, intimate, and has that hidden-gem feeling you want from a speakeasy. The staff members are incredibly friendly and welcoming, which made the experience even better. I had the pleasure of having Adan behind the bar, and this guy knows how to make a good drink! As always, I started with my go-to Old Fashioned. I have to say, it was easily one of my top two Old Fashioneds I've ever had. Then I told Adan to surprise me, and he came up with some kind of peanut butter chocolate martini. Let me just say... it was a true pleasure. Rich, smooth, and absolutely delicious. What I really liked about The Modernist is that it feels like a place the locals actually frequent rather than just another tourist spot. I genuinely had a great time here. If you're visiting San Antonio and find yourself downtown, give The Modernist a try. Step away from the River Walk for a little while--you might just discover your new favorite spot.

For her second drink, she told the bartender to surprise her. He gave her a look and asked more than once if she was sure she wanted him to surprise her. Instead of making her an actual cocktail, he poured her what seemed to be a straight, extremely bitter liqueur. The whole interaction felt sarcastic and like he was intentionally messing with her rather than trying to make her something she would enjoy. What bothered me most was the attitude behind it. We weren't being rude, demanding, or causing problems. We were there to have a good time and experience the whole "tell us what you like and we'll make you something" concept. I did call the number listed for the business afterward trying to speak to someone about it. The person who answered said I had the wrong number and didn't know what I was talking about. I got angry during that call and said some things I shouldn't have, and I can admit that. But that doesn't change how disappointing the experience at the bar was. We expected a creative and welcoming experience and instead left feeling like my wife had been mocked. I hope management sees this and addresses it, because the concept of the place is great, but the way we were treated completely ruined it for us

I arrived without a reservation, but that wasn't going to work so I made one about an hour ahead and just waited it out. I'm glad I did. The swordfish Asada was delectable and all of the accoutrements that come with it take the whole thing to another level. I couldn't decide between the white mole cauliflower and guacamole to start so I got both. It would be hard to imagine not having either as they are both really special dishes. The tortillas and honey butter that came out are basically like having your dessert early. I think the highlight of my meal was that I was eating a green onion, and one of the servers walked by and in the nicest possible way suggested that I didn't know how to properly eat it. He was correct as it turns out, after he showed me how they did it around the kitchen table growing up I enjoyed them so much more. Both super cool and brave of him to suggest. Can't wait for my next visit. Absolutely stellar. If you're on the fence about eating here, get off the damn fence and make a reservation.

Great seasoning, perfectly flaky and moist, a nice crust on the outside. With that we had some jalapeno corn bread which was also delicious. Not too dry at all. I was hoping for it to be spicy but it was not. For dessert, I gad panna cotta and it was a great ending. Not too sweet, but the berries made up for that. The lavender meringue bites had a great crunch. Our server (Maya) was excellent. She was so friendly and helpful. Finally, the decor is unmatched anywhere. It used to be a brewery and they kept the old pipes and valves, which look very cool. It has a great vibe. I highly recommend. Without the need to, I'll mention anyway that it's not cheap.
