For what it is the chicken and rice box is great. It's super simple yellow rice with either chicken or lamb. The chicken is really good I'd say a solid 8/10 the lamb is 10/10. It's so good. The boxes come with yellow rice which has always been well cooked and seasoned and a simple salad. You can get the cream sauce and hot sauce on top. Super simple lunch, no frills just great flavor. The meat and rice are both seasoned well and cooked great. 1 star off because I think they could be a bit overpriced but overall not bad considering that's most things now. True to that form this restaurant is open late and has a limited menu. At $10 I have had more expensive meals, but this still felt pricey for what I got. The lamb bowl came with a lot of rice and a small handful of bag salad. The biggest sin of this restaurant was the lamb. Cooking gyro lamb on a griddle drys out the meat and leaves it crunchy. Not only had they done this, but they chopped it in to small bits draining what ever moisture it had left. My wife had the chicken which was better but still only so so. If you need food and there are no other options open then it might be worth a visit. Otherwise C'ville has a ton of other places worth trying. read more

Quite impressive because she still managed to get the food out pretty quickly for my boyfriend and I. We got the lamb over rice and the beef over rice, and we both agreed lamb is definitely the way to go. Their spicy level also isn't something to be afraid of, their red sauce isn't as hot as the Halal guys' red sauce. Also if you eat in, you can grab a complimentary water bottle! The small portion of meat and rice disappointed given the $10 price tag per platter. On the positive side, the chicken and lamb were both juicy and well-seasoned and the rice was fluffy. I also appreciated the ingredients in the salad like red pepper and chickpeas that represented an upgrade from usual iceberg lettuce and mealy tomato. Unfortunately, the white sauce smothered all over the platter had too much sweetness for my liking and was gloppy. The red sauce did a decent job of cutting the richness, but the platters ate sweet overall (especially since the meats had cinnamon in the marinade). Their sauces are great. They have a red spicy sauce and a white yogurt sauce. If you like it spicy, ask for extra sauce, but always ask for extra white sauce -- you won't regret it. I got the chicken over rice salad and my pita bread was so stale (like cardboard) and the chicken was dry and had cartilage in it. They didn't skimp out on the meat though because it was about 50% meat, 30% yummy basmati rice, 20% veggies, smothered in A LOT of their yogurt based sauce and some spicy red sauce. As someone who is from the New York City area and has had my fair share of the famous Halal Guys, as well as a few knockoff food trucks and brick and mortar places across New York, New Jersey, and even in Virginia, I was excited to see something similarly of Charlottesville. First off, I stumbled on this on grub hub but I didn't know the food was meat/rice platters. The name and logo and description isn't very clear as to what cuisine they're trying to convey. The marketing in me wants to help them in this- changing the logo/design, having specials to students particularly on Friday and Saturday nights after turning up. I think they'd make a killing closer to Grounds, at the farmers market or a food truck near UVA. Every time I pass by or go in, it's empty. The food selections are good, there is a decent set of selections from chicken, pork, lamb, beef, and vegetarian. The salad is like an actual salad, rather than scraps of iceberg lettuce they put on the platters in NYC. Although there's something to be said about those platters being mostly meat and rice and some vegetables, rather than how half of the platter is salad in this one which I was hoping for less of. The actual food tastes decent - they ask you to customize the spice level- which I appreciate. The meat and sauce is good, not as great as the Halal Guys but it'll do. However, the rice leaves me something to be desired. It's your typical yellow colored basmati but it was dry both times I got it. It could be that it has been out for a while and just sitting in a warmer. When I go to halal guys or similar restaurants, the rice was recently fried on the grill and put on the warmer for 5 minutes tops before serving. I think once the salad to meat/rice ratio changes, serving sizes get a little larger, and moisture of rice gets better, I'll be sitting this at around a 3/5. read more
