Overall a great lunch spot. They have all the ingredients for a high quality and fresh Mediterranean style bowl at a fair price. You can easily eat here for less than $20, which all things considered is worth it. Basically, the chipotle style experience but with a homemade and quality ingredient components. I especially liked the mashed lentils, cucumber salad, roasted sweet potato and of course the chicken schwarma. Also the atmosphere is pretty hipster/industrial and contributed to the experience. The only negative I have is that the falafel was a little dry and chewy, but to be fair I got the last ones before they cooked a new batch. Overall, I will return for lunch again next time I visit Charlottesville. read more

This place was so incredibly good. It really hit the spot on a rainy afternoon. I live in Richmond and wish we had one of these! We got a classic chicken wrap and a falafel pita ("Falaway"). The Falaway was our favorite - really tasty falafel with the amazing celery dip, no need to add anything extra to this one. The wrap we added on a bunch of the toppings but even then the chicken was still the star! Well and the yogurt sauce - yogurt sauce always makes things better. I wasn't sure what to expect since the counter service feels like a chipotle, but why would anyone go to chipotle when they could come here?! read more

Great find in Charlottesville on our way home from DC! This is a wonderful little Turkish joint with fresh and tasty food at reasonable prices. I tried their build-your own bowl with beef, and really enjoyed it! I like the concept of being able to pile what you want into a customized bowl. The meat was well-seasoned and although slightly chewy, it was a generous portion. The vegetables and toppings all had great flavor and seemed fresh. Great sauces as well. I also tried the baklava, half of which was pistachio and half of which was walnuts. They were slightly soggy, but still tasted good. The service was very friendly, answered all of our questions, and we didn't have to wait long to order and get our food. It's a fast casual set up where you order and choose the toppings at the counter, then find your own table. The space was clean, there was plenty of seating, and the only tricky part was finding parking. Thankfully, we found some street parking a few blocks away, so we didn't have to walk far. read more

It was very mediocre - I figured it would be more flavorful and succulent but it kind of tasted like a basic pita sandwich with chicken and vegetables. Visited on a Wednesday during Happy Hour. It was nearly empty so our food was ready pretty quickly. I was glad to see many flavors of Bold Rock, including the seasonal ones. It's Charlottesville so that's unsurprising but nice nonetheless. Food-wise, I ordered the steak Ottobun, rosemary fries, and baklava. My guest order brussel sprouts but to my advantage started to get full so I commandeered them. Everything was tasty and flavorful. I see why this place is so popular. My only gripe is the steak itself wasn't as hot as I would've liked. It was lukewarm at best. After I finished dining, I noticed the happy hour discounts hadn't been applied, but they apologized and promptly refunded me for the difference. read more

With so many choices, this little shop on the back of the mall might get over looked. One word: Don't. The food is absolutely wonderful. While the meat is not shaved in front of you, the doner is delicious. The amount is just enough. You shouldn't have left overs. The food was fresh, the service was as fast as it could be while we waited to order behind a family with four indecisive children. There were several small tables to enjoy your meal. There is no fountain - all drinks are prepackaged - and they gave some unique soda offerings along with your typical Cokes. My bowl was loaded with toppings and really tasty, especially that celery sauce (which was like a tzatziki, garlicky and creamy). We brought Otto's to Richmond to cater a Board of Director's dinner for approx 40 guests. From start to finish they were wonderful to work with. All of my communications with them were through email and Ali was very quick and thorough in his responses. I asked him to make recommendations and the menu he planned out for our buffet style dinner was perfect. Our guests were from all over the world but to say that every guest loved the food would be an understatement. It was a huge success! The three Otto's staff members that set up/served were also wonderful. Punctual, professional, kind, expressed a strong desire to please get everything perfect, and VERY hard working. Many of the toppings are cold, and while the protein items aren't necessarily fresh, I would say they had a small supply up front and were replenishing every couple of customers, and my falafel was fresh. Between the flavored rice (I think?), greens, and various salads and fixins my bowl was pretty well stuffed. If anything, I wish I'd gone for a little less variety, but it was an interesting bowl full of flavor and probably healthier than the vast majority of fast food. The shop is pretty basic and the drink selection didn't blow me away (I might have tried a Turkish beverage as I've been intrigued by Turkish sodas before), and I'm not sure it was quite as good as the glowing reviews, but it was a quality fast casual place for sure. read more

Came here for lunch with friends. The inside is very casual, and customers order Chipotle-style. I've been craving some good falafel so I was excited to try Otto. I ordered a Falafel Bowl-- Bulgur, Beet Salad, Celery Dip, Mixed Greens, Red Cabbage Salad, Fried Eggplant, Coban Salad, Lentil Ball, and Hummus with Tahini and Tzatziki. I wasn't impressed with the falafel. Compared to my favorite falafel spots in DC and NYC, theirs' lacked flavor and didn't have a great bite to it. I felt like the falafel mixture needed more herbs and spices because of the lack of strong flavors from the chickpeas. Even with the sauces I felt it was missing its own standalone flavor. It definitely wasn't the best falafel or falafel bowl I've ever tasted. However, the fried eggplant and red cabbage salad were fresh and really good. My friend ordered a beef döner wrap and it was one of the largest wraps I've ever seen. The portions at Otto are definitely great for the price. Overall, I found my falafel bowl underwhelming. However, the ingredients were fresh and I like that Otto is a local business that brings Turkish food and culture to the area. Had the so-called 'Istanbowl' with their chicken Doner. Service was quick and courteous, slowed down only by indecisive patrons (what can you do?). Food ingredients quality is excellent and salads are fresh. That said (as someone who has lived in Turkey), I can't say the food 'transported'' me (as other reviewers seemed to have experienced). I found Turkish flavors, decidedly lacking unfortunately. The chicken was kind of bland relative to what I consider authentic Doner, as were the salads lacking in the typical Turkish herbs and spice flavors. Got a falafel bowl, curbside, on my way back home after some errands last Saturday. Truly a satisfying and beautiful meal. So glad I tried Otto. The falafel was delicious and plentiful, and I was able to choose 9 other things to fill my bowl with. Standouts were: the eggplant, I LOVE fried eggplant; the sumac onions, and the beet salad. The only thing I felt lacking was the hot sauce I wasn't getting any real heat from, but I also had pepperoncinis so I still had a kick to my bowl so we're all good. Can't wait to visit and try their doner kebab to compare to the Turkish style kebab shops I visited in my time living in Scotland.
