if i could give zero stars i would. had awful experience since hairdressers at boy luv girl split -i went to main office which is now run by one woman. I gave very specific instructions for a basic cut - she cut back of my hair short, left the front and top untouched-i wanted my hair cut evenly not all chopped up. who does that-if she can't cut hair why is she pretending to? be warned-do yourself a favor and stay Far away. read more

I feel that it is my civic duty to leave this review. However, this experience brings me great shame. I was asked to never book an appointment or come to Boy Luv Girl ever again. SPECIFICALLY because I'm disabled and an inconvenience to Boy Luv Girl. Just like every other girl, I want to look and feel pretty. The only difference between me and most women is that I'm physically disabled and sometimes can't make it to appointments because disabilities come with lots of management. It's never been an issue with any other doctors office or company. Another salon I frequent is so kind and understanding when I'm too ill. Because they actually care about their clientele. I was running late to a hair cut appointment with lisa and called ahead to let them know the BQE was entirely backed up in the middle of the day. I had a migraine, so had to get it under control so that I could make it to and through the appointment. I was, admittedly, about 30 minutes late. I was asked to never come or comeback by the owner, Anna, because I had to cancel a few bang trims previously (they are free. Take fifteen minutes) because I am disabled and I had a series of bad days, therefore I had to cancel said bang trims. The reason Anna cited was my "condition." I didn't even mention suing Boy Luv Girl to Anna while I was on the phone to politely inform her that I was running late. Anna told me "you're too sick to get haircuts here" I was baffled. Then she told me not to make an appointment ever again. I told her that I was protected by the Americans with Disabilities Act and that they had to make reasonable accommodations, otherwise, it's discrimination. Whenever I had to cancel, I'd call in advance, and let them know. I always felt terrible about it. But they used to be kind and understanding. However, this time was different. Anna lost it. She said "WHAT, ARE YOU GOING TO SUE ME NOW?!" The thought hadn't honestly crossed my mind. But I realized the depths of her discrimination and realized it was a good suggestion that I have decided to follow through on. I told Anna I hadn't thought of suing them, but now that she mentioned it, I'd see her in court. It was her idea, anyhow. I cried for at least hour once we got off the phone. It was the first time, since my accident, that I felt truly discriminated against. I felt so ashamed of myself and my body, and thinking back to that day still makes me sick to my stomach. I will do everything in my power to ensure that no person is treated like this by any employee or owner of Boy Luv Girl ever again. read more

I've been debating writing a review, since as the poster from 11/28 notes, Hector was so friendly! But I had a really similar experience. About four months ago, he totally butchered my hair. I asked him to take maybe an inch or two off to create a just-above-the-shoulder-length straight bob with curtain bangs. Instead, he took off about 5 inches and also razor bladed chunks into my hair without checking in at all. The result was a short, weird, two-tiered mullet-y thing that I've been embarrassed by for months. It finally grew out enough for me to get it fixed, and the new stylist I went to just kept saying, "what did this guy do to you!?" Do yourself a favor and avoid this place. Find a stylist who listens to women because Hector definitely does not. read more

Just moved to the neighborhood and needed a new haircut place. Latesha did a great job with my shape and layers! It's a cute salon, and they use great products as well. Definitely will come back. Edit -- After the great haircut I got from Latesha I decided to come back for color a few weeks later. She did an awesome job on my complicated dark hair that I'd put a semi-permanent red tint in that turned out to be just plain old permanent. I wanted to go much lighter and she did a great job of accomplishing what I wanted: still darker at the top so it doesn't grow out badly and light with nice highlights and lowlights. Moral of the story: Latesha will do a good job with your cut and color! read more

I love that everyone who works here is local, super chill, but also super talented -- it's like laidback but still very high quality. I went here in July and my hair is still suffering. I was super disappointed in my experience. The girl must not have gotten what I wanted. She gave me a super generic cut with waaaaay too many layers that is not at all suited to my face shape. It's going to take a year to grow this bad boy out. And worst of all the chick who cut my hair was not friendly, she just chewed gum and ignored me. I arrived 15 minutes early for my appointment and she wasn't there yet. "You know you're super early right?" Not really. When my girl (It was Jen, saying my girl is just getting creepy) showed up the first lady I talked to whispered "I told her she was early, she just wanted to hang out." I had my hair cut at a different salon on 9/13 and loved it. By the time I was about to leave on vacation on 10/1, it had started growing in oddly. I tried to make an appointment at the same salon for the next day, but they didn't have any openings till the following Tuesday. I decided to try Boy Luv Girl on a whim since I'd heard good things about Aaron and they managed to fit me in the next morning. I am so glad I decided to try them. I discussed with Aaron what hairstyle I was going for and he did an amazing job. A month and a few days later and its still going strong and growing in nicely. This salon is my new go-to. Not only is it within walking distance, but they're always able to fit me in for an appt at the last minute. I have thick, curly, multi-textured hair and it's hard for me to find a place that gives a consistently good cut. I've had Jenn every time and been very happy with her. I also enjoy her demeanor, as she doesn't talk your ear off about silly things, but is friendly and really listens to you. She also gave me gorgeous highlights last summer, that STILL are adding dimension to my hair. I'm with Andrew T. below. Hesitated posting because I don't want this place to get blown up! Neat little place around the block from work. I am really bad about haircuts. They cost too much, and I've had bad experiences of hairdressers not listening and cutting in weird ways. I also have this urge to chop off my hair at a moments notice, and I've been trying to grow out my hair. Sadly for me, this place looks perfect to get a short 'do. In fact, the woman also getting her hair cut looked adorable, and I almost changed my mind. Lisa was very nice and took the time to know my needs. She didn't take off much at all and gave me great layers for my face. In general, I like being chatty, but most of the staff in there were friendly, but quiet. I didn't take it to be rude, but it's such a bummer not to chit chat. Little more money than I would have liked to spend, but for the ease of getting a same-day appointment, closeness to work, and a job well done, I'm pleased. read more

I have long curly thick eastern hard-to-tame hair. I was in search of a place that would give me a totally new look and after being recommended by a friend and yelp as well, I decided to come here. They recently moved down Atlantic avenue between henry and clinton. I can't remember the name of the lead hairstylist/owner, but I had my hair cut by her. I told her I wanted to go with something short and she refused to let me chop my hair off. The cut was clean and stylish, but nothing out of this world. It was nice, but average. But what really got to me about the experience was she really lacked effort or commitment to styling it cute. I felt more as if she was just in a rush to get me out of there once she had done the cutting. However, being that it was in my neighborhood and due to convenience and lack of any better experience in nyc hair salons, I probably will be going back. After my stylist of twenty years disappeared, I felt a bit lost. Who to trust with these curls? The one stylist I went to twice just didn't get my hair--insisted on excessive use of thinning shears to make it more "manageable"--and could do only one kind of cut that I didn't so much like. So I cut my hair myself for four years and pulled it back in a bun just about every day. One day I walked by Boy Luv Girl and thought, why not check the vibe and see if they have someone who can work with my hair? The environment was really lovely, well kept and organized, not loud, natural feeling...totally my speed. I made an appointment for a few weeks later with Latesha. What an amazing job she did! She listened to me as I described what I like for and shared a few photos with her, she let me know in advance what she would do, and she gave me advice if I'd like to do color down the road. The cut is really perfect--it took into consideration my hair type and health, as well as my style. I'm getting compliments from everyone, I can go a few days without washing and it still looks fresh (never the case in the past), my hair is now so soft, and the shine from the gloss Latesha did is outstanding. I just moved to the neighborhood and I'm so happy to have found Boy Luv Girl. I have poofy/frizzy/kind-of-curly/wavy hair that is very hard to tame. I had an appointment with Lisa and was nervous that once again I was going to get a stylist who cut off too much, put in too many or too few layers, or tried to straighten my hair unnaturally. I was so wrong. Lisa listened carefully, gave me her own suggestions for what would work for my hair type, and then simply did a fabulous job. Not only did my hair look great that day when she gave it a wavy blow out, but it actually looks even better when I style it myself (exactly what I wanted since I rarely have the patience to blow dry my own hair.) I am absolutely going back to Lisa. She's wonderful. The salon itself is also very lovely. Simple, quiet vibe. No frills but it doesn't need them. Plus, the price is right. Been here a couple of times. First time there wasn't anything remarkable about it, but I went back on Sunday and Letitia cut my hair and it was amazing! As it's summer I had decided to get my hair cut short (well just above my shoulders, which is short for me!). I have curly hair so was worried about it, but Letitia listened to me and was really great, and gave me a great cut - plus I can still tie it back, which I asked for. It's a quiet salon in general, they don't play really loud music and they are not all super chatty, which really suits me as I can relax and read a magazine instead. I didn't get offered a drink, which I'm fine with but I know other people like to have a tea or coffee. I also love it because I rang on Saturday and they had an appointment on Sunday. I'm not good at scheduling these things in advance so that works for me. read more

This is a little late - but I love the way Lisa does my hair color - she is terrific - have been back twice and this is not my go to place

I've been going to this salon for 10 years (to Lisa) and I loved Lisa because she always listened to me and I felt like she gave me the cut I wanted and not the cut she wanted. That's a special thing in a hair stylist. But I don't think I'll be going back to BLG. I went to see Hector, who was so nice and fun to talk to, but all I asked (I had long, straight hair, to my waist) was that he cut a couple of inches off and give some light layers in the front, but that I still be able to pull it back... also that I didn't want to have to fuss with styling my hair. He immediately cut a huge chunk off of my hair (at least four inches) before it was washed... without asking me or warning me at all. I think it was supposed to be this fun, spontaneous moment, but it didn't feel that way to me. I laughed it off, because he was so warm and I liked him, but that was very emblematic of the whole cut--he didn't listen, he just gave me the cut he wanted to give me... he kept going really fast and brushing me off when I would ask questions, like "please not too short!" "I'll still be able to pull it back, right?". My hair is now shoulder length (8 inches shorter than it was) and has all of these layers that are not sitting well at all without all the gel he added in. He started razor blading these weird chunky layers into my hair without asking how I was doing or checking in at all. Now I have a huge chunk (like 3 inches across) that is at my eye level--and they aren't exactly bangs and they're not exactly *not bangs. I asked multiple times if I'd still be able to pull it back (which I meant to mean that I'd be able to pull ALL of my hair back, as a way to prevent getting a super short cut). He said "you can still pull it back, but now it will look pretty with pieces falling forward." But the result looks the opposite of pretty and reminds me of Tom Petty's hair, which was definitely not the look I was going for. Also, it keeps falling into my face and driving me crazy. So I've purchased a lot of barrettes and It's going to take at least a year to grow out the chunk to where I'm able to pull it back. I'm not sure why he didn't slow down and listen or follow my pretty minimal directions about being able to pull it back and cutting off 2 inches. I really liked him personally and enjoyed talking with him and part of it is on me for not speaking up more, but I don't want anyone else to end up buying a year's worth of barrettes and end up looking like Tom Petty. read more

Latesha is wonderful! A few weeks ago, she gave me a cut that perfectly walks that fine line between what I wanted and what my hair textured allowed for. I don't know about you, but I'm a girl who is impulsive and very much into changing my hair as much as my outfits. I went in there wanting a very short choppy graduated bob that, if executed perfectly, would have made my head into nothing but frizz. I'm glad she didn't listen, but took my vision in the right direction. Admittedly, as I walked out, I was a little bummed. The haircut was OK but not 100% what I wanted and I felt like she played it a little safe when I wanted her to go for the gold. Within a week, I was so appreciative that she did NOT ruin my hair. Honestly, it's the best cut I've ever gotten! And as my husband says, it's so "me." I also wanted to darken/warm up my color a bit - I was walking around with longer very blonde pulled back hair, and now it's a cute choppy bob with plenty of stray pieces to keep my happy, and this warm dark blonde with beautiful subtle highlights - I'm a happy camper. One star off for the price - holy cow! For my color (single process + full highlights) and my cut, I paid nearly $300 with tip! Hopefully this is a 3-4x a year type of thing and hopefully she can replicate. read more

I had a blowout here for a wedding, and was disappointed. The person who washed my hair didn't do the usual salon-style wash--she didn't really spend any time washing my scalp or the hair near my neck. Meh. Then the stylist who blew my hair out spend a while drying my hair with a round brush, and by the end there was barely any curl or volume. She then just curled my hair with a curling iron, explaining that she wanted to make sure the shape held for the wedding. I've gotten my hair blown out dozens of times, and I know that if it's done right, a brush is all that's needed and it will hold for about three days. Curling-iron curls was not the look I wanted. I went back to work afterwards, people were surprised the style had been done at a salon, and commented that it looked exactly like when I do my hair myself. I won't be going back here. read more

Do not go here unless you want to be completely ignored and then be given the worst haircut of your life. I walked in, and they asked me if I wanted water. The water never came. I got my own water-not a big deal. But this was indicative of the issue at hand: a complete lack of listening skills at this website-less (wtf?) salon. I have long, thick curly hair. I asked for a trim, and to have my layers cut shorter because they had grown out. Apparently the word "shorter" was the trigger for my new bangs. I now have bangs, and basically the Jennifer Aniston from 1998. A glorified mullet. I cannot put my layers in a ponytail. When I asked how this happened and if there was anything that could be done, my "stylist" Lisa ran away. She literally ran in the back of the salon and poof! out came the manager. They kept referring to this as a "misunderstanding," which is a total excuse - I was clear in communicating I wanted my layers trimmed, and that my layers needed to be gradual. I also told Lisa that I had curly hair, which she clearly has no clue how to deal with, because anyone who knows curly hair knows not to cut it too short or it poofs up. Bottom line: steer clear. Try Soon on Court. A million times more professional. read more

I have had pretty long hair that I want to do nothing about for a while. I know what to expect when I go from very long to shoulder length: I look like a 50's housewife or a poodle depending on the time of year. I just went to visit Boy luv Girl which was recommended to me years ago, and i was squealing on my way out- I actually look like a hip professional adult. It's a small miracle. My stylist immediately seemed to know my hair: stringgy yet coarse but lots lots lots of it. (probably the most confusing hair to cut and style) and she not only planned and executed accordingly, she was absolutely more than happy to spend some time tweaking after blowing out my style. something I feel nyc stylists are never open to/get frustrated by. I hate to be pushy and usually end up wanting out luke warm at the end of a hair cut. Not the case here. I was absolutely a stake-holder in the haircut, and my approval was respected and listened to! go there! read more

Worst hair cut EVER! Based on yelp reviews-I was really excited about FINALLY finding a place in the neighborhood that I could get my hair cut instead of always having to schlep to Manhattan. Jenn cut my hair- she was really friendly and nice- but the cut was the WORST hair cut I have ever had!! It was totally lopsided and completely uneven and I had to go to another salon to get it fixed. I ended up having to cut off three inches to even it out and can't even put it in a ponytail anymore. I am so disappointed in this place. I will never go back. read more
