Had my first blowout here on Sunday - Lisa was fabulous! I've had a hard time finding a good place to get a blowout in the neighborhood, and a friend suggested Boy Luv Girl. I had an 11am appointment and Lisa took me right on time. The shampoo/scalp massage by the receptionist (I can't remember her name) was divine, and Lisa gave me a great, sleek blowout with just enough volume to last throughout the entire day and night (I had a wedding at 3pm). Very friendly staff, great service. After not getting my hair cut for six months, I finally couldn't stand it any more and called Boy Luv Girl on a whim. They squeezed me in an hour later. I literally just told Rhiannon, "I want something low-maintenance I can shampoo, condition, and blow dry while still being long enough to tie my hair back," and based on that vague direction, she made it perfect. Very thorough, careful work that came out beautifully. So pleased. Tax included, the cut came to $78. Note: they take cards, but there's no tip line on the receipts. Make sure to bring cash for the stylist's tip. I'll be moving out of the city before my next haircut, but if I ever move back, I hope this place is still around! read more

I really hate leaving this review, but I hope to help someone else avoid making a big mistake! My experience started off with a chaotic hair washing experience. The receptionist began washing my hair, ran off to answer the phone and left me sitting there for a few minutes with shampooing soaking into my hair. After a few minutes, someone else came over and washed for another minute or so before the receptionist came back and finished up. She very clearly did not want to be washing hair and did an exceedingly bad job of it. Next came the haircut. (I'm not naming names because I actually liked the stylist). It is the worst haircut I ever had. Not only is it crooked, but it's a ridiculous style. I have not-quite-shoulder length hair and told the stylist I wanted to keep my modern cut but wanted to soften the blunt front ever so slightly. He asked if I wanted layers and I told him as minimal as possible - enough to give my hair some movement and soften the front but nothing obvious. Here's what I got instead: extremely short layers in the back - I'm talking a good 4-5 inch difference between the top and bottom of my not quite shoulder length hair!!! No change in the front at all. It's like some nightmare version of the Rachel. I've scheduled another cut at another salon to try to fix this disaster as much as possible. Save yourself your hundred bucks and a whole lot of heartbreak and go somewhere else! read more

This is the place to go if you're looking for a more edgy look, but I'm sure they do a great job if you want a classic cut. I like the look of the place, nicely designed. Finding a good hair salon for a reasonable price in NYC has burdened me for six years. Boy Luv Girl is exactly what I have been searching for! I've seen Rhiannon twice and she gave me great haircuts both times. The salon itself is adorable and has a relaxed vibe which I love compared to the usual uptight salons of Manhattan. Anna, the owner of Boy Luv Girl, has been cutting our hair since she was employed at a cutting edge shop in the East Village. When we moved to Brooklyn, you can imagine how thrilled we were to learn that she had just opened her own salon within walking distance of our new home. Over 10 years after we first met her, she is still the only person we trust with our hair. Our two kids love her as well. I had the pleasure of having my hair cut by Lisa yesterday. I've been living in Brooklyn for about 15 years and had yet to find a salon and stylist that I felt completely satisfied with. I think I've finally found the one! Lisa is a very sweet, not overly-chatty stylist who after a short but thoughtful consultation gave me exactly what I asked for. She is adept at chunky long layers and super cute bangs, which are hard to accomplish on my high forehead with calics. My long brown, wavy hair has great shape with a little edge. Lisa did a good job on just giving me a simple trim. I could tell shes done this so many times thats its just routine for her. It was my first time venturing away from my regular dresser and although i'm not totally sure shes the one, I am sure she was able to assuage my fears of starting anew. Had the worst cut of my life here this weekend from Hector. This guy needs to focus on learning how to cut hair, I don't care how long he claims to have been doing this. He should not be around bangs. I'm still in shock over how he turned my overgrown shag into a helmut. I told him I liked my bangs long, so he cut them too short. But worst than that is how heavy they are. In fact he said that they were too heavy when I came in and then proceeded to make them heavier! The bangs are uneven and don't blend into the rest of the hair. He must have thinned out the rest of the hair so much that it just lost all movement. Even The assistant Crystal couldn't look me in the eye when I left. Everyone could tell I was miserable and nobody offered to help me. They just sent me on my way with this horrible haircut for $80 plus tax. I don't even know how to begin to fix my hair. read more

Needless to say I won't be back. update: I had to go get this haircut fixed at a reputable salon. the stylist informed me I am missing a chunk of hair in the back. Based on yelp recommendations, i went to see Jenn a while ago and was not disappointed. She gave me a great cut--very precise, really well done. I'm not a huge fan of the style, but i went in without a very good idea of what i wanted, so i don't really think it's anything she did wrong (i've gotten lots of compliments, actually). But she managed to make my hair look more choppy than anyone else (i always want that and have never gotten it before) and did a fantastic job on my bangs. I will definitely go back! read more

All Ican say is UGH... I really wanted to like this place. What I thought was a trim and some layers to update a classic look turned out to be worst haircut. It sucks and I cringe everytime I look in the mirror. I even had a photo to show my hairstylist. Now I have trendy, overly cut hair! My bangs are too short. And instead of chunky layers, she gave me way too many layers that my already thin hair looks even thinner and stuck to my head. I did not cry and tried to be nice to get the hell out of there. This Salon came highly recommended. I was made to feel very welcome & offered wine while I waited. Anna was my stylist & she followed everything that I said... except for the take a couple of inches off the length request. I showed her 4 pics of long hair cuts, however I now have a very cute cut but it's about 4 or 5 inches shorter than the 2" off request. Lots of masterful snipping but I now have a bob for the Holidays & everyone agrees my hair is about 7" shorter now. I could see how short it was before I left but what can you do at that point? Can't sew it back on, so I figured I'd sit with it for a couple of days. Thankfully my hair grows pretty quick, but I highly recommend you recap with your stylist what you want before the scissors come out to make sure it sank in. After 15 years with the same stylist in Manhattan, I was ready for a change and decided to go local. I had noticed Boy Luv Girl on my walks up and down Atlantic Ave and the place looked inviting. Getting an appointment, even on a weekend, was easy, so I went for it. The space is pleasant indeed. It's spacious, bright, and the music stays in the background rather than clubbing you over the head. Unfortunately, that's where my good experience ended. After a listless performance by the salson assistant/apprentice (it was either her first day on the job or she really didn't want to be there--or both), I came under the scissors of Anna, the owner of the salon. I told her about wanting to make a change, both in terms of cut and color. She suggested taking off some length and said she liked the color as it was. And that was that. I walked out $100 lighter and feeling better groomed than when I had walked in. But I didn't get anything near the make-over advice I had hoped for. It was like a Supercuts with a nicer atmosphere and a higher price tag. They carry some nice products, but even there, they seemed to be no interest to sell me anything. Sometimes that can be a good thing--but that day, I needed someone to get me excited about something new--and they just didn't deliver. read more

Thank goodness for Anna. I've been a NY resident for about a year, and after my last cut, was very wary of going to anyone. I'm normally very loyal to my stylist, and when I was in California, would get a cut every 4-6 weeks to stay looking sharp. On the faith of fellow Yelpers, I decided to give this place a shot and gave them a call this morning to see if they could fit me in this weekend. They could, and so I went. Anna was super nice and cute as a button, listened to what I wanted, and asked me lots of questions about how I like to style and wear my hair before she took the scissors to me. She took her time, didn't rush me, and did a fantastic job. Hooray! I have a stylist I love again. The price was a little steep at $78, but for a great cut and a friendly stylist, well worth it. She ran into me again on the street a little later and said hello. We happily chatted for a few blocks before parting ways. She ran into another client on the walk and was very warm to her as well, asking how her color is holding and whether her client likes it. I've been going to the same stylist for a year now and getting bored of his work. I have what many people consider "easy hair", its stick straight and thick. The downside of this is that it looks bland. While it takes a lot of skill to tame curly hair, it takes a lot of vision and creativity to make straight hair interesting. My hair actively refuses to be interesting. It doesn't take a curl unless I put a mountain of goop in it, and it weighs itself down and looks flat. So, I called B luvs G on a whim after walking by many times and thinking "why not try a new place" and they squeezed me in just an hour later. The atmosphere is super down to earth and not snobby at all. They do lots of kids cuts as well and really strive to create an inclusive vibe. Leticia did my shampoo and haircut (which I love! It's nice to have the same person working on your hair). I explained to her my dilemma: boring, straight heavy hair. Every time I get a cut, it looks good for a few weeks, and then the layers grow out and it looks bland again. I told her I need texture, movement, and a cut that retains some shape even as it grows out. I told her I didn't want to lose much length and it still needs to be professional. I also said I'm lazy and don't want to work hard to maintain it. She nailed it. Like instinctively. She said, "well, you need a lot more layers on top and shorter layers to create movement." She went to work quickly and efficiently, paused to tell me she's going to blow it out and then double check the length and take more out after its dry. So we proceeded. Throughout the cut, she was friendly, but not in that fake small-talk way that stylists can sometimes be. I felt relaxed and most importantly, i felt like she understood what my hair needed. This was a week ago and since then, the cut still looks great. I've shampooed it already and blown it out myself and I really feel the difference. It looks a bid like mid 90s Jen Aniston, but hey, you know what, that's getting to be a classic cut, and it works for my hair. I'm very pleased with this cut and experience, oh and the price? 70 bucks, very fair, going rate, not a rip off. I recommend them. The only thing--why wont they make a website? Please make a website! Latesha has given me two GREAT haircuts in row, and did my color for the first time last week. This is the first salon/stylist I've been loyal to in a long while. I'm usually terribly undecided about my hair, switching style and color on a whim because I'm perpetually discontent - but I actually plan to keep this style for a while. As other reviewers have noted, she has an amazing talent for understanding exactly what you're picturing -- the descriptions I burbled at her were totally incoherent (I am NOT a hair person) and she somehow produced exactly what I wanted. After establishing that I do precisely nothing to style my hair, she also persuaded me into a layer I would not have gotten without her input, but which looks great straight out of the shower. the new space is clean and very hip. had my hair cut by anna...was really disappointed. i asked for 2 inches off with long layers, and instead, she hacked into my hair, cutting about 6 inches off total, and the layers...ugh, i look like a mushroom bc they start too high and are bulky. however, she did cut my toddler son's hair - she was quick and good with him, and it looks good. good cut considering it was only $16 for him. i will not be going back for my haircut. read more

I've been going to Rhiannon for almost two years now, and she is fantastic. Very laid-back and always able to find the words for what I want in my haircut, even if I can't articulate it myself. When you have bangs, your relationship with your haircutter is more intense than usual, and Rhiannon never makes me feel annoying or anal retentive when I explain down to the strand what I want my bangs to look like! I've had Jenn cut my hair several times and was very impressed. Recently I went back and Jenn was not available so I had a new younger woman cut my hair. I can honestly say this was the worst cut I've ever gotten. It's been 6 weeks now and I have not felt good about my hair one day. I'm waiting for this hatchet job to grow out so I can get a new cut.
