Dr Polokaf didn't even go over the MRI results with me, I got a shrug and " there's nothing we can…read moredo at this time." Considering how much pain I was in that was the last thing I wanted to hear. However, the condescending man didn't believe I was in pain. When he prodded my kneecap and asked if it hurt and I said yes, he responded with "oh, you're really selling it aren't you." He patronizingly didn't go over options, except to offer a cortisone shot. It was a humiliating experience, being dismissed with the feeling "come back when you're really in pain and there's an actual issue.' All topped off by a snide parting comment from the nurse insinuating if I was really in pain I wouldn't be wearing those shoes. Thank goodness for second opinions. I went to a doctor several friends recommended. He actually went over my MRI results with me, explaining each result including Grade IV chondromalacia. He went over possible treatments and the pros and cons of each and to take my time deciding which path I wanted to go down. Basically, he talked to me like an adult and not like a recalcitrant child wanting surgery for the fun of it. Please don't go to Polakof, find a doctor who will treat you with respect.

Dr Mary Trumpi, Dora, Trudy and her team are excellent all around!!…read more I initially was a physical therapy skeptic (due to a poor previous experience several years ago in the Bay Area), but Dr Trumpi has made me a believer! I rolled my ankle last summer and I thought I could just handle the recovery on my own... but 4 months on, my ankle was still 2x the size and constantly bothering me to where I couldn't sleep. Before being totally resigned to having to buy different sized shoes for the rest of my life, I finally asked my primary doctor for a referral, but the clinic recommended had a 4 month waitlist and did not accept my insurance. So I went to my trusty Yelp search and Santa Monica Sports Medicine was the top result, and so I decided to book an appointment. Calling the office was a breeze and I had an appointment within a couple weeks. They kept prompt communication and verified my insurance benefits right away, which amazingly helpful (I've experienced many doctor offices that just leave you on your own and tell you to call insurance yourself before booking an appointment). When I came for my first appointment, I was surprised to be seen by Dr Trumpi herself, because I felt my injury was fairly minor... also I couldn't even say it was a sharp pain, just more an annoyance to daily life. Dr Trumpi took her time with me even though asking lots of questions and I felt immediately comfortable with her and that I was in good hands. She wrote up an exercise plan and walked me through a variety of in clinic treatment options and tailored everything to my comfort level, from massage to electrical stimulation and so on. I continued every couple weeks with her and was amazed how quickly my ankle improved. I no longer was resolved to have to buy different sized shoes! She also started treating me for my chronic back pain -- which again, I never thought was a big deal --just life soreness haha, but I now know it's actually something treatable. Thank you Santa Monica Sports Medicine!

I want to be fair and make clear that Dr. Rand McClain and Nurse Rita were excellent. In my…read moreexperience, both genuinely care about their patients and went above and beyond to help me. Unfortunately, my experiences with other members of the office staff were very different. On one occasion, I needed therapeutic phlebotomy based on my physician's recommendation. The locations initially provided by the front office were not practical for me, and I explained that I needed medical direction because this was therapeutic phlebotomy, not simply donating blood. After I expressed my frustration about not receiving adequate assistance, I received a call from a physician who responded to me with, "What is your problem? Do you want us to do everything for you?" I found that response extremely disrespectful and inappropriate. Months later, I was driving roughly 50 miles to the office for a procedure I had coordinated with Nurse Rita. Because traffic had made me about 10 minutes late, I called the office while I was on my way. The front office told me I wasn't on the schedule and would not allow me to speak with Rita, even though she had coordinated the procedure. The final issue occurred when I missed an appointment because I was called away to respond to an emergency as a member of a SWAT team. I immediately contacted the office and apologized. I was told I would be charged for the missed appointment before management would even review the circumstances. When I asked whether management would speak with me before charging me, I was told no the charge would come first. At that point, I canceled my future appointments and decided I could no longer entrust my care to the practice. What makes this especially disappointing is that Dr. McClain and Rita are the exact opposite of these experiences. They have always treated me with professionalism and compassion. My issue is with the way I was treated by other members of the office and the apparent lack of consideration for the circumstances surrounding these situations. I am posting this review because I believe patients should know that the quality of the patient experience can depend greatly on who they are dealing with. I sincerely hope Dr. McClain becomes aware of these concerns, because the treatment I received from some members of the office did not reflect the level of care I received directly from him and Rita.

I didn't have coverage because I was going from active duty to reserves and it showed in active. They called me, I responded and told them that it was in transition. It took a few days, but they finally reinstated my appointment. I deeply appreciate the Office self reflecting and giving others the care that they need. I am looking forward to getting the healing that I have been seeking for 18 months to have due to a Naval related injury. Thanks to the entire team for your checks and balances and being there for your community.

Bottom line: **This place charges exorbitant fees for thoughtless, substandard "care." They…read morerepeatedly waste your time. They call themselves a walk-in clinic to make you think costs will be reasonable, but are in fact an expensive offshoot of the UCLA hospital system. DO NOT GO HERE UNLESS YOU HAVE NO OTHER OPTIONS.** First I called. They said I could walk in and see someone quickly. How convenient, I thought--a true walk-in clinic in the UCLA system. DON'T BUY IT. When I got there, suddenly the clinic was "very busy", and I had to make an appointment for many hours later. I.e., they lied to get me there and sink their hooks in; my time was irrelevant. Second, I came back for the appointment only to be told that they cannot look at more than one body part in the same visit. So if you, like me, fell and injured both a knee and a foot, they flat out will not look at both areas together. You have to choose one. Not only is that maddeningly stupid for trying to make an accurate diagnosis of potentially interconnected problems, but again they waste your time to get you to come back for a second visit with a whole new set of (exorbitant) billings. Since I'd already wasted a lot of time and had an appointment, I thought I'd better have one thing looked at at least. I wish I had read the signs sooner and just walked away. Third, they force everyone to get x-rays down the hall before they let you see a doctor. They claim this is necessary to make an orthopedic diagnosis. In fact, while it may be increasingly standard practice (in order to milk patients for all they're worth), it makes more sense to do a physical exam and order x-rays only if deemed necessary. Ah, but that would mean the doctors might have to spend more time with patients and not everyone would get x-rays--and that won't fly at this money-grubbing clinical sausage factory. In my case, I was already confident I hadn't broken anything and was experiencing soft-tissue pain--they refused to bend their policy. Now on to medical incompetence. After being forced into getting pre-exam x-rays, I was briefly seen by Dr. Derek Altema. Dr. Altema claimed he'd looked at the x-rays and saw no issues. He then did a brief manual test of my knee, again claiming no issues. He ignored the soft-tissue pain I was experiencing. He spent precious time bringing up things from my medical history that were wholly unrelated to my fall, but didn't even attempt to put a possible diagnosis to the pain I was experiencing. Since I'd hyperextended my knee in the fall, I asked a specific question about potential PCL injuries. Dr. Altema said the PCL would only apply if there was hyperextension. I said "Well there *was* hyperextension." He responded: "Oh no, actually it's the [different ligament] that would be injured by hyperextension." (a) That is completely wrong. (b) I could no longer trust this doctor's medical opinion, since he apparently doesn't understand knee ligaments to the extent any patient should expect from a doctor. Instead of providing any sort of diagnosis or care plan for my injuries, he tried to sell me a common knee brace. For $80. When the same brace costs $15 on Amazon. It was the worst doctor's visit I've ever experienced, and that's coming from someone who had a medical professional once talk about my health issue in front of a room full of other patients. At this point I realzed this facility had completely wasted my time and money from start to finish, and the bill would likely be far higher than it should be. Still, the office staff tried desperately to get me to commit to coming back the next day to get my foot x-rayed and examined. No way in hell I was going to do that. I also saw the staff constantly telling people they could be seen and would need to wait--only to tell them later that no, there would be no available appointments today, but pressuring them to come back the following day. Eventually the bill came. ~$1600. That's right: SIXTEEN HUNDRED DOLLARS for forced unnecessary x-rays and a shoddy medical exam that yielded no trustworthy information. They tried to charge ~$1,100 for the useless medical visit, plus ~$500 for the x-rays, which were sent to a separate UCLA medical department for review by some other doctor in the UCLA hospital system, just so they could charge me for a second doctor's time. (And it raises the question: did my doctor even look at the x-rays himself?) Since then, while I got one customer service rep to reduce the doctor's visit bill by a few hundred bucks, they have been unwilling to adjust the bill further. And now I feel compelled to write a negative review so others don't make the same mistakes. So they have wasted even more of my time even after the debacle was over. Do I need to say anything else? This office is a scam designed to maximize patient payments for incompetent, time-wasting medical "care." It frankly debases the entire UCLA brand.

I never felt pressured. I felt educated. Together we decided on regenerative treatment, giving my body the opportunity to heal itself. Six weeks later, I'm back on the ocean riding my board--something I wasn't sure would be possible so quickly. What impressed me most was their honesty. At my follow-up, they told me I was healing so well that I didn't even need another treatment. That level of integrity is rare. It showed me that their priority is the patient's outcome, not selling additional procedures. I appreciate the time they spent with me, the patience they showed answering my questions, and the genuine care they demonstrated throughout the entire process.
