The Legend Rock petroglyphs are about 30 miles northwest of Thermopolis. On Highway 120, drive for…read morealmost 22 miles until you reach the brown sign indicating the left turn to the petroglyphs. A smooth dirt road leading to a left turn at Legend Rock Road will take you to the small one-room interpretive center and parking area. From there, it's a short walk to the line of petroglyphs -- supposedly, almost 300 -- that are easy to find, especially with the help of the numbered markers. The age of the images, in the Dinwoody style reflecting the Big Horn and Wind River geographic areas, range from 100 years old to about 11,000 years old. There are many large images that are quite distinct and vibrant. It's easy to capture photos of your favorites. If you're in the Thermopolis or Cody area, detour here for some great unexpected surprises.

We stopped in Lander, Wyoming for a few days, so we decided to check out the Sinks Canyon State…read morePark. Good decision! Sinks Canyon is so named because of a rushing river that flows out of the mountains and through the canyon. Halfway down, the river turns (sinks) into a cavern and runs underground for 1/4 mile where it emerges in a pool called "The Rise". In the Rise there are Rainbow and Brown trout; the larger ones may weigh up to 12 lbs, but NO FISHING! For a quarter you can buy fish food to feed the fish, which is fun for everyone. A must-do if you are in the area! Also check out the Visitor Center. It is small, but is one of the best I've seen, and I've seen many. The wildlife is well displayed; and I loved the wildflower displays. The geologic rocks outside the visitor center are also A+. Well done, absolutely 5 stars.

The Dining room is set and you eat with other campers and hikers. They even let me ring the dinner triangle to let everyone in the cabins and around the lodge know that dinner was ready. We took an eight mile, over night hike to view Bridger Wilderness. The crew does pack trips, which means they will meet you on the trail with a pack horse full of supplies. This was so helpful. We are not the most experienced of hikers, and to have this option was perfect. We also took a day long ride on horseback. They packed us a lunch, and we took a guided trail ride. It was amazing! The horses were so friendly. While I am an experienced rider, my husband had never been on a horse. They have horses for all experience levels. Wayland (his horse) was perfect for him, and Rita was perfect for me. Everything about our trip was very authentic. From the dinner triangle, to the horses. From Stan teaching us about the "Tarzan call", and the other man cracking the whip and teaching one of the other campers to do it. Each morning and night there was a wood fire in the lodge, and a relaxing place to sit and visit, or play a board game by lantern light. Big Sandy is a family run lodge and everyone treats you as if you are part of their family.

We had reservations for 2 nights starting Aug 12, 2026. We drove up late in the afternoon to find…read morea 'Closed' sign on the Lodge and no other paying guests staying there. A staff person met us outside the Lodge and directed us to our cabin and the washroom and said dinner would be signaled by a bell around 6:30pm. The cabin was very rustic and there were gaps around the door and in the walls that worried us about rodent problems with our food. When I went to the washroom building there were used towels and personal items in the shower area. Strange for a place with no other guests. When I went to use the toilet I found it full of excrement that appeared to be several days old. When called for dinner, the Lodge was still dark and we made our way to a long table with only 2 places set (no greeting by staff or anyone for that matter). We followed several other people (staff? workers? people living in the area?) in line for a buffet that consisted of ground hamburger stew and bagged iceberg lettuce. Our choice of drink was from pitchers of water or lemonade. The Lodge gets rave reviews for their burgers and cold drinks (beer, etc.) that are offered to day users coming off the hiking trails. This would have been a great improvement over the 'family style' dinner provided to us. After dinner we concluded that the service was nowhere near what was advertised and paid for and that the Lodge was surely closed (as the sign clearly stated and the lack of other paying guests indicated) and decided to drive the long, rough road out of there without staying the night. Definitely not worth the $791.78 that was charged for 2 people for 2 nights.

Big blue lake flanked by granite slabs…read more I hear there is fantastic fishing here! If you're going into "The Winds" to climb, this is a good spot to take your first break and cool your tootsies. I would NOT recommend drinking this water without filtration though. This lake sees heavy use by humans...humans that may have varying degrees of...sanitation. For many folks, this lake is the destination. We stopped, admired the views, then threw our torture-packs back on and continued down the trail.

Wow. This is the…read moregateway to the granite castles, spires, and fangs known as the "Wind River Range". They are so inspiring that they are the reason the company "Patagonia" exists. (why Yvon didn't name the company "Wind River", I guess we'll never know) The area offers world-class rock climbing, hiking, scrambling, and fishing. (not sure if the fishing is world class, I'm an idiot when it comes to fishing!) Just getting to the trailhead is a journey. It sits at such high elevation that, unless you live nearby, just walking on flat ground will wear you out. Carry on though, the views are worth it, I promise!

This is the best camp to use for climbing Wolf's Head and lines on the west side of Pingora…read more You are super-high, and there aren't as many people up here as at the lower lakes. It cuts about an hour off of your approach. Why is this lake not a no-brainer? It's not as cozy as the lower lakes. There isn't as much vegetation and there are no trees. The wind will blast you here, unencumbered. (oblig: "Gee, I wonder why they call them the WIND river range?!) The lake is good for chilling beer and getting water to boil/filter, but not much else. The views of the mountains (and stars, Dear Sagan, the STARS!) are pretty great though. Oh, and your body will also be punished by the thinner air as you sleep. Having said all this, would we use this as our climbing camp again? Not sure. Might want to flip a coin on that one.
