DON'T LOSE YOUR RECEIPT!! Apparently they have no way to ever reproduce them again, so should you ever need warranty work on what they've done to your vehicle, you'll be up a creek with no paddles! Great mechanic [Sam], he diagnosed the issue quickly and thoroughly repaired my vehicle in an exceptionally timely manner. Their front office/accounting was a nightmare though! Caroline in their front office promised to fax me a copy of my receipt after my bill was paid. I was out of town and had to wire cash to a friend in Chicago to go pay the bill for me because this place would not allow me to pay over the phone with my credit card; I wired money to pay this unseen invoice, a friend took the money to them and paid the unseen invoice, then the next day she never faxed the invoice! When I called two weeks later to ask where the receipt was, I got the runaround. Caroline suggested I just get the receipt from the person who came and paid. He called her to explain that was not an option, and asked why she didn't just fax the receipt to me as she'd originally promised. She told him they don't even have a fax machine, that she'd have had to go to Kinko's to send the fax. Then we asked if she could reprint a copy of my receipt so that I could send someone local to pick that up for me (since I am still out of state). She said, "NO", that it was too late now because all the prior month's records were gone to accounting -- she no longer had access to them. Oddly, the Better Business Bureau website lists them as having a fax number [773-667-7358] which I called -- and it seems to work just fine! Had I known they were never going to fax me the documents as they'd originally promised, I' would have had the person who went to pay for me in the first place guard that receipt with his life --- now how the heck am I supposed to ever have proof of warranty for my service or document this expense on my business taxes? Had my first terrible experience here at BP with the older gentlemen who works behind the counter. He over charged me for an extra item that I did not purchase. As I tried to explain to him the situation, he began to call me a theft and curse at me because, I was telling him I'm a regular customer and spend my money here everyday. For him to accused me of stealing for my local gas station , knowing I'm a regular customer was outrageous!!! It wasn't much money but the principal of the fact is to be a decent human being and be honest. We phoned on Jan. 10 asking if we could stop in because my Sienna van was suddenly making a bad structural noise, and we had to get back home to Michigan that day. It was 3:45 and the repair shop was closing at 4, but they said they'd wait for us to get there. We arrived at 3:55. The mechanic, Sam?, put the van on the lift and looked at everything carefully. He also took us out in it, going several blocks. He spotted a non-vital component on one wheel that could use replacing but wasn't a crisis. He spent 30 minutes with us! And the really nice, classy lady (Carol?) who seemed in charge rang us up for only $20 after she'd said it would be $40 when we'd called. Very kind of her! We did make it home, and the van still has noise but is driving fine. They seem like honest people running a good little business. I admire that. read more

This is my second encounter with this "business". My first was for a water pump repair, had a struggle with them when I requested to keep the old part as I wanted to make sure work was done correctly. The only issue I encountered after my service was the serpentine belt needed to be replaced and was frayed. At the time, I was told the belt was fine. I was able to drive it 70 miles back home to my mechanic and turns out the belt wasn't fine. Guys, ALWAYS seek a second opinion. Today, I'm currently backed against a wall and worried my alternator might be going out so I request a diagnostic from the BP mechanic service. Caroline, the manager had me fill out the necessary paperwork and asked me to sign. I filled out my name, car make, and address but didn't sign anything because we hadn't discussed the fees or work that would be done. I informed Caroline that I can't sign blank documents, but if she fills it out appropriately I will sign and pay the $25 fee (for a diagnostic as agreed). She went on to explain she's a trustworthy business and that I should just sign the blank document. After a bit of a power struggle, she filled out the documentation correctly and then I signed it. She scolded her mechanic, Joe, for taking my car under the bay for the diagnostic. She informed me they would call me when they finished the diagnostic. I stated that I would wait, but thank you. Caroline and her mechanic, Joe, spoke and about 7 min later he came out and told me my car is fine. I requested a print out of the diagnostic and was told there is no printout. I proceeded to inform them that I would like the receipt stating that the diagnostic is cleared and I'll pay the fee. Caroline at this point took the original paperwork and tore it up in front of me and said there is no fee and to go! DO NOT GO HERE. They're not honest, this place will rip you off if you are a female and don't come prepared. Caroline (the manager) is actually very RUDE. She was ready to bump all her oil changes for the day when she heard it might be my alternator causing me car issues ($600 for parts and labor). The minute I said, let's see what the issue is first, and I will pay separately for the diagnostic but would not sign blank documents she GOT FURIOUS. Good thing I took pics of everything, I've contacted the cooperation and I will be contacting the BBB. BEWARE of this establishment. read more

Beware ripoffs! As one of the only auto repair shops in Hyde Park, they have a captive audience. Last week I had a slow leak in my tire and took it there to have their tire guy look at it. He told me it couldn't be repaired and that a new tire would cost me $175. I got home, got online, made a few calls and found the same tire at two other South Side locations for under $85. To be fair, I called Cornell Amoco back and told the manager what her colleague had quoted me. She called me back later with a price of $125 for the tire and installation, but I had already gone somewhere else. It's worth asking questions here. read more

About a week ago, after leaving the laundromat, I caught a flat tire as I was returning home. It was about 10:30 pm, so, not wanting to pull over and sit on a dark side street by myself with three children, I pulled into this BP station to call for roadside assistance. I had been waiting for about 45 minutes when I looked up to see two police cars and an undercover car had pulled into the gas station. The "person" working inside never came from behind his bulletproof glass to address us. He just called the police on a woman and three kids with a car full of laundry. I pointed out to the police officer that I had a flat tire and was simply waiting for roadside assistance, which was very delayed at this point. The police officer went in and explained to the worker what was going on. End of problem, right??? WRONG!!! After waiting for about another hour and a half, Roadside Assistance finally showed up... Along with the police. Again. He had called the police on us again! The officer asked me if we had had some kind of argument or if something else had happened, because even he couldn't understand why the worker was behaving the way he was. I guess he sprouted some courage with the police being there, because that's when he came from behind his bulletproof glass to yell at the person who was there to change my tire. He yelled at her for blocking one of the pumps... Even though no one else was there but us. The officer, once again explained to him that I had a flat tire and she was there to change it. I heard him yelling back at the officer that that's "not my problem," and "they need to leave." I was infuriated that he could be so insensitive, especially when all we did was sit in the car and wait for help to arrive. I grew up in Hyde Park and have patronized this location many many times before, so I felt that I would be safe there while I waited for assistance. Well, after this experience, it's safe to say I will never, ever, EVER spend another dime there! read more
