My mom is legally blind and has been taking classes at the Braille Institute for over 10 years. I was truly amazed at all the "free" classes that the Braille Institute has to offer. Some of the classes but not limited to are; ceramics, chair aerobics, IPad and IPhone tutorial courses, computer , life skills, drama, current and past news, and journal writing. They have a cafeteria (very reasonable prices) and the food was really good They also have a store where customers who are visually impaired can find a plethora of items to purchase. Hats off to the Braille and all their donors who so generously donate their time and money to make this place run like s well oiled machine and give the visually impaired a place to do everything a sighted person does.

A non-profit dedicated to aiding those inflicted with a loss of sight, from low vision to complete blindness. In certain cases, the institute also works with other types of disabilities. Paperwork to get enrolled was kind of a pain, but once approved, it's been fine. Braille Institute offers classes (similar to going to a community college) ranging from the obvious (learning braille, mobility courses, exercises, independent living course, computer courses, etc.) along with the more casual (singing, instrumental, art courses, sports talk). Much like a community college too, the age of students here vary from young adult to elderly. And then there's the added benefit of community, having those around you dealing with the same problem. My brother has been blind for over a year now, but only started attending this year, so I speak from a third-person perspective. He doesn't particularly enjoy coming here. Here's why... Distance. While Braille Institute has locations throughout the United States, this facility happens to be located in downtown. That's about 40 minutes drive from home. Not exactly convenient, especially for someone with my brother's temperament and particular medical situation (it's complicated). Wish there were more locations. My brother gives the impression that the courses aren't particularly interesting. Whether that's the fault of the courses offered or attended, or just his own personal bias and failure to accept his ailment (I believe it's all the above). For example, the exercise courses here are very basic, nothing like a gym setting, but more along the lines of demonstrating range of motion. The mobility course is one-on-one instruction, with an instructor that can come to your home to help get around the house and neighborhood, as well as around the Braille facility. To me and my family, our instructor Sabrina is the face of Braille; a shining example of assistance, patience, and courtesy. Facilities include underground parking, library, classrooms, cafeteria, restrooms, counselor offices, amongst others. Front desk helps you get around. Registration office helps you sign up for classes, which I believe run by semesters, but classes are repeatable and ongoing. There is a storefront within the facilities called Vistas, which you can purchase supplies like canes, kitchen utensils, talking scales and alarm clocks, writing tools, and a few games. Though if I were to rate Vistas by itself, I would give them a 3, because they don't offer services such as stringing together canes, as well as not having prices labeled on their merchandise. I wished there were more to help, but I wonder if that's the fault a visual-stimuli society not putting effort and resources to such an affliction. Sadly, budget cuts may also be a contributing factor. For example, the cafeteria was shut down 6 years ago. 6 years?! All that being said, there are volunteer opportunities here for those that'd like to be more involved. Despite the shortcomings, Braille Institute is a great resource for those willing and ready to move on with life without sight, and for that I am a fan.

The Director, Natally, has put her heart, blood, sweat and tears into creating an environment where not only her son but other children can receive the therapy(ies) they may need to thrive in this world. I am so fortune for this preschool, as I was at a loss for where my little one could go, and receive developmental support. I don't have to worry about how she is being cared and looked after throughout her day, and all it took was one morning watching Natally do everything in her power to make sure my child "would be happy there". Even before that I could tell she was in good hands, but definitely from that day I never regretted my choice in Willowcrest. If you aren't sure if I'm selling you a dream, just contact the school and take a tour... it will never hurt you, and you will see in the first mins that everything I'm saying is 100% true!!! Where do I start? My son (4 at the time) would not interact with us very much, would speak less…read morethan 20 words, and had several violent outbursts when we tried to change any activity or if his iPad would "die". When Big Solutions came into our lives we were hesitant because these were strangers who were going to socialize with our son and as parents we were scared of negative outcomes. Julian's journey began with his initial assessment and eventually to in home therapy. He was assigned 3 therapists including 1 supervisor. They (Ari, Claudia, Joy, & Paulina) are blessings!!! They connected with Julian but also became our teachers! They helped all of us with Julian's needs and how to understand what he was seeking, whether it be physical or emotional. As a parent with a child with autism, sometimes it's too easy to become frustrated and lose hope in any progress they may not meet. An example was my son's eloping. His father and I had no clue how to predict it or manage it. We would all take excursions to our local mall and his therapists were there with us the entire time. We learned to predict when he would run off, and why. He was seeking attention and sometimes just over stimulation so we learned to ask him to use verbal and non verbal cues of where he wants to go. Fast forward to three weeks ago while visiting an outlet shopping center (yes we wore masks) and we practiced all of those steps and he didn't elope! Had it not been for Big Solutions I would not see us going out with much ease as we have been. This is an agency that turned our life around and became part of our family while maintaining their professionalism. Big Solutions ENTIRE staff, from scheduling to in home, were amazing and extremely accommodating. They consistently helped Julian with communicating in various ways and adjusting to unexpected changes that happened every day. Big Solutions also helped us as parents in not give up and letting frustration and fear run our lives. They taught us so much and how to cope with unexpected outbursts and helping our son focus on his school. We were definitely lost in the ASD world and Big Solutions led us to a place where consistency, patience, and goals were good starting points for any situation. Thank you Big Solutions!

I have come to realize the firm, in Mission Hills, controlled by the CEO/BCBA lacks an 'inspired…read moregrowth' in company culture and inability to provide a healthy work environment. This specific firm seems to abide by social cliques and favoritism, making it difficult to collaborate as a team and move up in positions. The lack of respect, synergy, and compassion has hemorrhaged quality workers. Their lack of staff (BTs/BCBA) is due to: Abrupt schedule changes, extensively watching you work through cameras, hostile training, CEO/BCBA shifting blame to BTs, and inability to give a WELL DESERVED promotion. There is a lot of restraints/holds that are not documented or shared. CEO/BCBA has dual relationships with certain clients and is NOT proactive with their clients. If you agree with how they treat their employees, imagine the impact they have with your child. They have withheld information to parents about what happens in the workplace, and has had the police called on them to IMMEDIATELY share a report to insurance and to parents. Look somewhere else! This forced plenty of Behavioral Technicians to spread their ethics very wide, while simultaneously being gaslighted, micromanaged, and exploited. This is a toxic, passive aggressive, workplace that does not hold empathy for their employees. You will exhaust your efforts working alongside the incompetent CEO/BCBA. The micromanagement and dishonesty due to their lack of mentorship has driven many people out of the company. Here's a piece of advice: Treat ALL of your colleagues with kindness, they are the backbone of your company. Turn your attention to your clients best interests and continually build rapport. Don't bite off more than you can chew! Projection is uncanny in the workplace.

I came here without much expectations seeing as how a friend merely referred it to me as a "decent" after school but I have to admit, I was impressed. Pros: Compared to other after schools, this place is HUGEEE. Might I say, I mean, really, there's plenty of rooms and a gargantuan playground for the kids to play at. It's so big that not all the rooms are in use at the moment but hey, they means it's only bound to get bigger right? They also have a pretty decent selection of meals planned out for the kids covering Asian fried rice to American Pizza Bites. The material covered at Leader's Academy focuses on the areas that your child may need so you could say that each and every kid has a special folder that is designed for them. It's not your cookie cutter workbook which generalizes each and every student under a standardized learning. Cons: Because they don't specifically have enough numbers of each grade to have their own grade classes, most of the classes are mixed. It's not where one class will be all 3rd grade or another all 5th grade. Instead the classes are divided into blocks. For example, PreKinder and Kinder would be placed together. 1st and 2nd grade would be put together. And so on and so forth. Because of this you could say that the kids are placed with older/younger kids compared to them which may or may not be beneficial in the parents' eyes.
