I love this place! I must admit that the first time I was here, the place looked sketchy. My friend and I still ate here and it was suprisingly good. We ordered the half chicken and half steak dinner. When our plate came, I saw that the chicken was white meat and I prayed that it was not dry. The chicken was surprisingly tender and well marinated! The steak was juicy and you must try the green sauce that they put on the table right when you sit down. It goes well with the chicken and steak! It was a good portion for the both of us and we finished everything because it was so good. This place is very affordable and portions are not bad for the price. They also have a cheap lunch special! The chicken at La Brasa Roja is really tender and flavorful. You can order a half or full order of chicken that comes paired with boiled potatoes, a sweet fried plantain, and a somewhat strange biscuit. The ambiance of the place doesn't feel great, but I typically just get the food to-go since its nearby. They are always really quick and really cheap for the great quality and quantity you get. A simple casual little Colombian Restuarant in the Albany park neighborhood. The place is not fancy, the decor is basic but cute, the staff was friendly and I did not wait long to be seated . Tried this place for the first time last night based off yelp reviews and its location and very pleased. I loved the fact the chicken was cooked over the open flame and you could see it cooking at the front of the location. I placed the order for pick up and arrived within minutes and had a very short wait (less than 3 minutes). Fast! One note, I did have to wait for someone else to take my order over the phone as English was a barrier. I had the garlic chicken breast, which was really good. It was more $$ than the whole chicken, but I liked not having the bones and not a dark meat person. The chicken was not a "breast" but rather cut up and some slices/chunks. This place kinda ranks between 3 stars and 4 stars. Reason being, there were a couple of hits and misses during last night's monday night dinner. HIT: The corn (and cheese) pancake was indeed amazing. MISS: The portions were a little small (only 1 corncake and 1 plantain per order) HIT: The grilled chicken breast was delicious! MISS: They ran out of whole rotisserie chicken when we arrived at 8pm. HIT: Their entrees were priced fairly and were big enough to share. MISS: The service was a little ... absent. We ordered roasted chicken - ok, not as flavorful or crispy as i imagined roasted rabbit - ok, needed more meat and flavor! empanadas - really crispy skin roasted vegetables - flavorless and dry fried plantain - too fried in general the food was good, but not as good as i imagined it to be. I would say that we caught La Brasa Rojo off guard if we hadn't called at 2pm for reservations for 14 people at 7:30. Pretty much everyone wanted to try the "hits" from the rave reviews here on Yelp. We went in there with rot. chicken and cheesy pancakes on our minds. Well, guess what. There were only 3 chickens left (had probably been there for hours) and they were completely out of the cheesy pancakes. Man that sucks. Luckily I managed to get a half of one of the chickens. The food: Wonderful. I'm a self- proclaimed rotisserie chicken connoisseur and this place has some of the best I have ever had. Mine had been sitting out for awhile...but it was still great. The food-to-price ratio here is fantastic! The service/atmostphere: HOT! If it is above 80 degrees outside you had better wear shorts to this place or you're likely to pass out. This is probably not a place you want to take a large group to dinner. We had some issues in the beginning getting the waitress's attention. So much so that we just helped ourselves to the glassware. I did raise my brow at the "plate" the chicken breast was served on. It was a wooden plank that looked like it was pulled from the bottom of a river. Whatever...if the food's good enough I'll eat it off the floor. Overall I would say that I can see myself stopping into this place once a month or so to take home a bird. This is the lowest rating I have given to a restaurant. A friend of mine was boasting about it and he mentioned it was BYOB, so we picked up some beer and headed over there. We ordered the chicken platter and the silver fish (whole) with garlic. I was disappointed with the chicken, it was dry and heavily seasoned for my taste. The fish was the worse of the two entrees, it was "desiccated". You had to pick through everything to get to the good bits that were way over cooked and had tiny bones you had to weed through on top of that. The chicken was so-so,the plantains and the potatoes were cooked perfectly it just had way too much seasoning. I was in Colombia just this past December and up until saturday still have not made it to one of the handful of Colombian restaurants in the city. I didnt know much about the country or the cuisine prior to my trip. The food at La Brasa Roja was even better than what I ate down there. Could they have Americanized it? They surely dumbed down the menu for Americans though. I grabbed a paper take-out menu while we waited to be seated. It was all in Spanish but I felt comfortable reading it. When we sat down we were handed the english menu. I'm sorry but "arepa con chorizo" sounds way better than "sausage with corn cake" and "empanada" sounds more apetizing than "meat turnover." Really, who doesnt know what a friggin' empanada is? I had a half rostierre chicken which came with fried plantain and potato for only $6.95! it was so good and I even had leftovers which found their way onto a salad the next day. I especially loved the fruit juice made with water. They offered it in flavors that are not found in most places and reminded me my trip to Colombia, such as maracuya, guanabana (I know youre thinking banana but it's not) and lulo. We sat there the whole time mumbling about how stinking good the food was and not much else! read more

Awesomeszzzzzzz. My girlfriend told me she wanted to go here because someone at work reheated their leftovers and it smelled so amazing she needed to go to there. I've been to the one on Elston and Irving and the menu appears to be the same at both places. They sell both half ($7.99) and whole roasted ($9.99) chicken but just get the whole goddamn thing because you will want to eat that thing for days. The longer you can delay this chicken meal running out, the better. I got the garlic chicken, which was also incredible. Thinly pounded chicken that's coated in a garlic paste and charcoal grilled. It comes on a sizzling wooden platter with a bunch of other amazing sides. I think that was $13. Empanadas are $1 and amazing. I think it's BYOB. I love this place. read more

THE GOOD: This was the first rabbit I've ever had, and it was mind-numbingly succulent. If the spice on the chicken and steak is anywhere near as delicious as the rabbit was, I can understand why people call it the best there is. The empanadas were also simply outstanding! I could easily make a meal out of just these. The service was also very kind and relatively attentive. The flan was brilliant, very dense and creamy with a perfect caramel sauce. THE BAD: Half of our chicharrones were cooked perfectly, the other half were inedibly overcooked, and my husband's whole red snapper was, sadly, very overcooked; we probably should have sent it back. When we return (and we will --the rabbit and the empanadas were freaking sensational), we'll definitely stay away from the fried meats and stick with the grilled. Considering half our meal was disappointing, the good stuff was still delicious enough to earn this place four stars in my book. read more

I was so eager to eat that I just walked in and ordered right off the menu with sides & ended up paying $12 for rice, beans, 1/2 chicken, and plantains. Didn't think it was da best deal, but not bad. So I'm walking out the door & it turns out plastered right on the window was a 1/4 chicken special for $5!!! MMM ate here a while ago and came late in the evening apparently around the time when they always run out of those hot chicks. Come here early is the moral. The whole chicken was slopped together with some soggy plantains and cornbread. A little wierd because everything i ate had the same texture and flavor - i.e mushy and garlicky. Maybe its so 90 year olds and babies could eat this stuff... and they do.. and they did when I was there. Huge families were there slurping down this rotisserie mush. WOW WOW WOW...When I moved from Florida back to Chicago, I did NOT think I was going to have open fired Latin roasted chicken again. I remember from my many times driving to and from O'Hare (because of business trips) about seeing this place, and one time, right after a business trip, I decided to stop in to pick up some food, considering I was starving (since airlines are soo cheap these days that they make you pay $5 for a bag of peanuts!). Ambiance, not much...but then again, I was not eating there (but you can smell the roasted meat once you walk in...and it was TORTURING ME!). The food...phenomenal. I ordered a roasted chicken and a churrasco steak to go. Tender, juicy, spiced and delicious. And for all the food, it was very reasonable, if not borderline cheap. Hands down the best roast chicken I've ever had in my life. I used to live down the block from this place, and the smell alone is enough to give it a good review. I've been here countless times, I always get the chicken, and the future wife gets some sort of meat dish, whether it's short ribs, flank steak, or ny strip. This is the BEST grilled chicken ever! I pick it up for dinner about once a week and it's always a favorite. Plantains are fantastic but the arepa suffers a bit from being heated in the microwave. Haven't tried anything else or dined in so can't comment on that but the staff is friendly. Unfortunately, they do sometimes mis-time the grilling of the chicken and run out. After dining at the Irving Park Location, we decided to try our luck at this location. While they do offer a larger menu and a much larger capacity on the whole we were not as impressed with the food. My partner ordered the lamb and it came out dry and chewy. The flavor was excellent but the quality of the lamb could have been better. I ordered the steak and chicken platter. As good as the chicken usually is, which is phenomenal, the steak was even better. We left with enough food to feed another person. We will be going back to try the rabbit. When you walk in to this place, the aroma alone lets you know that you are in for a treat. That, and the sight of the rotisserie chicken in the front. We picked up a chicken, which comes with a couple of potatoes and plantains, to go. We added beans and rice. The chicken was quite possible the best rotisserie chicken in the city. *If you are going in for takeout, go straight to the back. They'll take your order there; pick it up in the front. You guys, this place is as good as it gets. I'm not Colombian but have been there and have lot's of Colombian's in my life to know what is good Colombian. What I love the most is that they don't mess around. They know their are mostly Mexicans in the neighborhood, (and like most Colombians), know how to run a business and make sure you get your salsa verde and if you ask for tortillas...no problem. :) I had an empanada and chicken lunch special. BOOOMB. I had to go with the chicken, I mean c'mon, for pete's sake, they're slowly rotisserie cooking it right in front of view. It was de-li-cioso! The place is super chill and down to earth. Looking for just some straight up Colombian home cooking with no bells n whistles...here's the spot. Oh and they have rabbit! I am going to try that next. Use to go to Brasa Roja pretty often and I'm sorry to post a bad review but the last time I went the food was dreadful (it was for take out). I understand that they can't have a fresh chicken roasting for just me but the last time I had the chicken it was clearly leftover possibly from the day before and was partially reheated. A wing and a thigh were even cold. The arepa con queso as well was reheated and they left it in the microwave so long that it was rock hard at the edges. I came to find out that several family members of mine stopped going for the same reason I just encountered. It's a shame that this happened cause one of the reason I use to go was due to the how fresh the food always was. I think I will be following my family in not going back. read more

Recommendations: to start get yourself at least a couple empanadas, as a main dish I'd recommend either the rotisserie chicken that's thrown directly on the coals right before it's served to you and is nothing short of succulent or the national dish called the bandeja paisa which is heart cloggingly delicious. As you eat be sure to wash it all down with a guanabana con leche "milkshake". Finally, for desert try the brevas con arequipe. Yummy chicken at an incredibly low price is so hard to find nowadays...enter La Brasa...my kids get their mango licuados from this place (although we ask with little sugar otherwise its a tad on the sweet side and then they wont sleep) So..I know this place is not fancy by any means but personally as long as its clean and the service is good, I could care less if the menus are old..the ceiling needs work etc..sometimes you pay more because of the location or the chef that went to Le Cordon Bleu..here its a no frills good old family owned restaurant. Their empanadas are very good and I especially cant resist their stew (sancocho) made only on Sundays. Minus one star because sometimes their chicken is a bit on the salty side... I absolutely love this place! I come here all the time. Great food at an unbeatable price! My favorites are the quarter chicken meal and the ribeye meal selling for $5 (plus tax). It's good quality food, nicely prepared, and very yummy. The people working here seem very friendly, however, I've never eaten in, I only have done take out. I am a white boy thru and thru, but i LOVE me some Brasa Roja!!! First off, the epinadas are awesome!! The are $1 apiece and i can eat 4-5 @ a given time easily. in fact, there have been many times, i just stop in to grab a couple to bring home and eat.(i live around the block) The roasted Chicken that you see in the windows is also REALLY good as well. There is actually so much on the menu i havent tried because i am such a fan of the same ol, same ol. Defintely give this place a try if you are in the hood....u will not be dissappointed!!!! read more
