I don't live near by so yesterday when I was 20 minutes away there I decided to swing in as it's a 2 hours from us. Got there before 5 before it got busy. Took some time for the waitress to help us. Ordered a 1/2 of chicken which I see is now $20 with mashed potato's that comes with coleslaw and toast. My stomach can't do coleslaw so I asked if I can sub it for something even if it cost more. No. Ok. Keep the coleslaw cause it will make me hurl from the smell. 20 minutes later coleslaw ends up on my table. Flock. Damn near around an hour later chicken shows up and a soggy Dixie paper bowl of mashed potatoes swimming in gravy. Took 30 minutes for them to come around after serving dinner to get some water and the chicken needs something to wash it down with. Long story short it was the most expensive breast chicken I ate on paper with not so hot of service. Was it the best? No. Save yourself 2 hours of sitting there and go to Pizza Ranch. When we left I got to Maple Grove at 745 and went wow where did the time go. It went to the Brass Rail for chicken. read more

OMG! The best broasted chicken anywhere. I come to Minnesota every year to visit family. This is one of our must go to places. The chicken pieces are huge. Chicken is also broasted to perfection. Chicken dinners come with coleslaw and your choice of potatoes. We usually get broasted potatoes or waffle fries. They have a smallish bar. Mixed drinks, beer on tap, and canned soda are available. Service is great. We stopped by on Sunday. They had lots of help. No waiting long for anything. Last year they added an addition. It definitely came in handy. We were a party of 18 total. We stop here everytime we are heading home from the lake, it's kind of became a part of the routine. Their broasted chicken is absolutely divine, perfectly crispy on the outside and juicy and meaty on the inside. Get the hot sauce, it comes in a to go ramekin and is quite mild on the heat scale, it has a vinegarish base with hints of sweetness too it. Parking can be difficult to find because The Brassrail is located ON hwy 65, but there is a gravel parking lot behind he building l. Call at least 30 minutes before your arrival time because you'll probably be put on hold for about 5-10 minutes before they take your order. Otherwise expect to wait for your order to be ready, which isn't a big deal if it's just adults because you could have a beer or two on their new patio, but it would be tough for kids. read more

Have to update my review since it's been a while! They went through a tough patch when their business exploded after being named the best broasted chicken in MN (or something similarly awesome!). They have added onto the building... a nice banquet type room and a beautiful patio! Kathy is still the BEST waitress there, and I hope she's there for a long, long time to come! She really makes the experience. It seems the wait staff gets pretty overwhelmed when they get slammed, but all things considered, they do the best job they can during the rushes and the amount of staff working. The coleslaw went through a disgusting phase, but it's now back on track... and possibly better than it was before the gross change. (The change tasted like dehydrated cabbage, if there is such a thing, and way too much of a salad dressing (mayo) flavor with no other flavors. It was soggy too!) It's back to being crispy and flavorful! Thank you for going back to basics!! The broasted chicken... once again amazing! For a while they switched to tiny chicken pieces, but seems as if they went back to the larger piece of meat (THANK YOU!), and with that, the pricing went up... BUT I am more than willing to pay a buck extra for good quality items, hearty portions and wonderful staff! If you're going here for the first time, I suggest the broasted chicken with broasted potatoes... and try the slaw, even if you're not a slaw fan, it's the only slaw I will eat! Be patient with the wait staff, and remember that broasted chicken takes about 20 minutes to cook, and they make everything fresh. We stopped in for a late lunch on our out state excursion. I had heard about the chicken here and I needed to try it out. This is a small town dive bar and restaurant with all the atmosphere that goes with that including an old Pac-Man arcade game. Back to the chicken. We both ordered different chicken dinners. We also had their onion rings and coleslaw. I always rate a place on their rings and slaw. We both loved the broasted chicken. It was done right. The coleslaw was pretty good. I'd eat more of it if the meal came with more. Those rings though. Darn good rings. The service was a tad slow. But they were getting slammed. It was a full house and they looked short on staff. It's in the middle of nowhere Grandy so Thank goodness Donna decided to start this business 50 years ago because it is probably the best thing that's left in this town. It's not a fancy place but sufficient menu and cheap beer to satisfy my tummy. I had a glass of cold Grainbelt for $1.25! The pricing for food is reasonable also. If you don't like broasted chicken, (who doesn't!??? Please call me I will sign you up for therapy) they have burger and sandwiches. The chicken has perfect brininess and the skin is so crunchy and delicious. The chicken breast is the size of my face! It's slightly greasy compared to the other place I used to love in Roseville called Countryside Chicken, but the meat is equally moist and juicy. I love love them! It was finger licking good! They have great coleslaw also. My friend who normally does not like coleslaw said that this was the best one she had before. Oh and their flat tater tots were yummy. Their waiters and waitresses are very friendly and at the end of our meal, dear Donna the owner came by to thank us for visiting and asked us to come back again. Sweet lady! Popped in here last Saturday evening to quench a month-long chicken craving. Nicely updated small-town bar with much of the original woodwork intact. The owner was seated at the bar alternately serving up cole slaw, playing solitaire, and talking to customers. Our service was a little slow, but they seem to serve a twenty mile radius via take-out, based on the comings and goings. I had a half mixed broaster chicken, cole slaw, and onion rings. Chicken was piping hot with crispy skin and well seasoned. But the cole slaw - such a perfect mix of tangy and sweet without being gloopy - a nice light dressing. We took a quart home. My companion had the spicy chicken sandwich, and wow! jalapeno bacon on a generous chicken breast portion for a great balance of heat and straight-up chicken flavor. It was really good. The fries and onion rings were pretty meh, but that's not why you come here. Next time I'll try the broaster potatoes. I've never been to a set-up bar and they're still licensed that way! They do have beer in bottles and on draft and a limited wine selection. Great small town bar, well prepared, inexpensive food, friendly service. We'll be back! read more

Years ago, this was everyone's favorite destination for cold beer, Walleye Basket and Chicken. It was a little, old local bar. A great place to meet up with friends after a game of golf, boating or fishing. Today, it has expanded, remodeled and become just another bar/grill. Still famous for Broasted Chicken, though. We had chicken. My wife, white 1/4, me 1/4 white, 1/4 dark. The pieces were huge! The leg was like a turkey leg. I bet the breast 1/2 weighed a lb. it was very crispy and dry. Over cooked to where it was tough. The waitress, although they were not busy, had no time to converse and was quite rude. The owner, who I had known from years past, had past on but his Wife is now managing the place. I'm hoping it was just a bad day and that it has not gone down hill like it appears. We stoped in at around 2:45 on a summer Saturday afternoon, and this place was still kinda busy. 2 of us ordered the broasted chicken and we were not disappointed. But the choices of potatoes were just different shapes of potatoes, all deep-fried . The cole slaw was good, but pretty wet. 2ordered chicken strips and they thought they were average. I've passed this place a million times going up North and never stopped in, boy did I make a million mistakes. Hands down some of the best Chicken in the state that I've tried. Ordered a 1/2 Chicken and took 1/2 of that chicken home, the breasts were huge. Along with some good coleslaw and some Broasted Potatoes it was delicious. I have lived in this area for almost 20 years. Have heard that the broasted chicken at the Brass Rail is incredible. I finally had some tonight. Service was good. Restaurant was quaint and clean. I waited about 10 minutes for my order and liked the atmosphere. However, the chicken I had tonight did not live up to its reputation. I ate it, but it was incredibly salty and heavy. I was disappointed with the broasted potatoes also, but that might be because I expected them to taste like those at Pizza Factory in North Saint Paul -- those are incredible!! The food was given to me hot, and my drive home wasn't more than 15 minutes, so I cannot attribute the heaviness of the chicken to its being cold. Maybe because it was near closing and the oil was not as fresh? I may give this restaurant another try, but unlikely because it is out of the way of where I do my errands. read more

As a former local that moved away to the "big city" I have dreams about this chicken. It haunts me. I often wake up in a cold sweat and weeping when I realize this chicken is not readily available for me to consume. The rest of the menu is also good, but fuck that food, EAT THE CHICKEN. I would drive hundreds of miles to have the privilege of being able to put this chicken in my mouth hole. This place deserves to be cherished and should be considered a cultural landmark; despite being a hole in the wall quietly residing off an unpopular road in a small town in the middle of nowhere in central Minnesota. I haven't stopped into the Brass Rail in years, my dad would take me there for lunch in the past. I stopped in today and the remodle job they did after the fire is great. It opened up the place and gave it the room it needed for more table space. They staff is friendly and curtious. Answered any and all questions. I ordered the double bacon and cheese burger. To my suprise it came on a toasted chibatta bun and not your ordinary hamburger bun. Alicia the bartender suggested the broasted potatos, which came out looking like a thick sliced potato chip / jojo. They were to die for!! The broasted chicken meal is all it's cracked up to be. Moist, crisp where it should be, not greasy like fried chicken. Solid double cheeseburger with bacon. No the beef isn't what you'd expect from the burger specialty places, but it's served hot and the bacon is quite good. The broasted chicken sandwich is fine; rather ordinary but nothing special or memorable. I'd skip it next time. Also skip the pizzas -- they're well done for what looked and tasted like frozen pizza but also nothing special -- not worth the calories considering the other better choices (but good enough for picky kids). Service was good. Bottom line: it's known for its broasted chicken, it lives up to its reputation on it -- that's why you go, that's what you should order and that's why it gets 4 stars. read more

Such a cute little home town type of place. When you walk in everyone knows you're not regulars but you get to pick whatever table you'd like, don't wait to be seated. It's nice to see the history of the place still present inside. Waitress was very busy, pretty sure she was the only one. Initially wait staff seemed very short and curt but actually she was very good. Even with only one person on she didn't miss a beat and everything we ordered was correct. Keep in mind this isn't a place to go if you're in a hurry. Chicken is cooked to order and naturally takes time. No fancy dinner ware needed, food is delivered in paper boats and you get cans of pops with disposable plastic cups of ice and plastic forks. And it's a completely perfect fit for this little gem. Broasted Chicken is nothing less than AMAZING!!! Served scalding hot and totally worth the wait. I'm normally not a coleslaw fan, but theirs is delicious. Round it out with Broasted Potatoes, YUM! My parents used to go get chicken there all the time when they had a cabin on a lake out that way. We don't live anywhere close to Grandy anymore but we still make special trips out there just for that chicken. I am telling you: this is the best chicken you will ever eat. If you want to eat the best old time comfort food, this is where you go. It comes with good slaw and a choice of potato. I personally don't care for the broasted potatoes but my parents still love them so I'll leave you to make up your mind about those. We always have to get extra chicken to bring home because it's even good microwaved the next day.
