These guys are all pretty fantastic. Elliot was the first person in many years to actually suggest something different for my hair (in this case, moving the part closer to the ear). The cuts are precise, they're always pouring a good beer, and the vibe is cheerful. Thanks to this place I'm the proud owner of a tortoiseshell comb which has hopefully upper my hipster game by 10%. They deserve a damn medal for dealing with me today, though. I came in with a little day-after buzz, gregarious and friendly but likely a little annoying. I called ahead based on a friends recommendation. Trey, I guess, doesn't work there any more. I said I had long hair, looking for someone who knows how to cut long hair. I was told come on in. I did. Place was empty. So far, so good. Then I'm given to this guy who looked new. Young. Not sure why he seemed new, just did. I told him the problem, I'm growing my hair out and last person cut it shorter on one side. He looks, nods, says ok. Then proceeds to cut it shorter in back, looks like a bad bowl cut. Also cuts one side different AND shorter. The light in there was bad but I questioned him about one side longer...so he cuts some more. I finally had to just stop. Paid and left. Terrible haircut. Stupid price for what.... Don't go. Don't do it. Go to a freaking mall or something....I could do better myself with a scissors and a bowl. read more

I realize that this barbershop is geared primarily toward men and classic men's haircuts, however as a woman with short hair sometimes you just need to find a barber to get the job done right. Having moved back to Dallas from Denver nearly a year ago, I had yet to find someone that I trusted to cut my hair more than once. Like I said, finding someone to competently cut short hair on women is more difficult than you might think. This has all changed now that I have found Brass Tacks Barbershop. Specifically, Juke the barber. I walked in unsure what to expect since I am not the traditional clientele for this barbershop, but found any awkwardness or nervousness to be on my end alone. I made a reservation online on behalf of my best friend who was getting married the day of the service. He said the service was fast and the experience was enjoyable. Trey was his barber/groomer and he rate them 4 stars. His shave took about 20 minutes and he commented that he blades were super sharp. I have yet to try them personally but will put it on my list for a face shave or head shave. My friend is Latino which I mention only because shaving techniques do vary for people of different ethnicities. My boyfriend alternates between regular appointments and walk-ins on Sundays, so he's seen several different barbers. If you want to get your name on the list on a Sunday, you have to go by there in person; they will not put your name on the list if you call, even if you are a regular. However, this is a good thing because it means that we can show up on a Sunday morning, put his name on the list, walk across the street for brunch or coffee, then return for the cut about an hour or two later. Every haircut and/or shave has been meticulously done. I love the shop, and I love watching the whole process. Even though it is clearly a giant man-cave, I have always felt welcomed and comfortable hanging out in there while I wait. They even serve beer at times. The music is always on point, and they always have a cool movie playing. This week, I was super impressed with the beard trim which was perfectly angled and shaped to the jawline my boyfriend wanted. Been to this location a couple of times now. Until I met Justin I haven't been able to get the cut I wanted in awhile. The place has a cool vibe and beer is on tap. Only negatives is their online appointment scheduler is glitchy so I would recommend calling to get an appointment. Also, my first visit was a bit jarring with Metal music playing at full volume but the business is going for a certain vibe andJustin has done an amazing job with my hair so it's something I can live with. Update: Literally MINUTES after posting this review I got a call from Brass Tacks. My barber (I don't want to name names that seems rude) saw this review and called me to apologize and offer a free trim in the future to make it right. I boosted the review a few stars for the great support. When my beard is good for another trim I'll take him up on that offer and see if I can delete this one and post a 5 star review! It was a good atmosphere and very pleasant experience, but then I had an unfortunate discovery when I got to take another look in my car mirror before leaving. My appointment was on 9/6/2018. I went in for a beard trim, after 8-9 months of unchecked growth as an experiment. I would have kept growing but I had to shoot a video for a formal event within a week so it was time for the experiment to end. I didn't know 100% what I was looking for, but I had some thoughts and mainly I wanted to turn all my months of work into something that didn't make me look like the kind of person who grows a beard just for the heck of it without making sure it fit with the rest of their face. Mold the chunk of marble into an amazing statue. I'm pretty happy with the much more rounded look of my beard, though it's hard to tell because I was so used to what I looked like before. I'm less sure about my mustache, which was a pretty walrus-y one that I didn't know what to do with the ends of (hence leaving it up to a professional). "Clean up the mustache" apparently meant turning it from handlebar style into a straight down uniform short length separated-from-the-top-lip style, with somewhat wispy beard-connecting ends that look okay now but I think might grow out in a funky way compared to the upper lip. So I'm not giving this low of a review simply because I don't like the cut. I was treated nicely despite the lack of communication about changing the style of my mustache (we only established that I wanted to clean everything up and get a more rounded look on the beard) and I'm good with trying out this style (I can always just keep growing, it's not like I have to shave anything off and start from scratch.) My review is so negative because when I left and was checking it out up close in the visor mirror of my car, I realized there was small chunk buzzed down to almost nothing on one side just above the corner of my mouth. My mustache is just asymmetrical enough for it to show up. You can't put hair back on once it's off so I don't really know what to do about this except for let it grow. Kind of a bummer end to the experience. Fortunately I've been asking if people notice it and they have to have it pointed out, but still I feel like a mistake was made on my very anticipated first beard trim. I also didn't know what to do after realizing it was there. I'm not a very loud angry person so I wasn't going to go storm back into the place and demand stuff, what was that going to accomplish? My experience seems to be in the minority of what you see here, so your mileage may vary with with Brass Tacks. read more

These guys are all the real deal and are masters of their craft. Everything they do - bald fades, hard parts, beard trimming, and cuts - are all consistently on point. I've had haircuts from a lot of places - I've overpaid for stylists, I've underpaid in strip malls, and I've been to places that say they specialize in men's cuts and they're all straight up garbage compared to Brass Tacks. Whatever style it is you want, describe it to one of these badass hair wizards and let them turn your head into freaking art.
