After touring my home and discussing the project I had in mind he had a detailed multi-page proposal for me. The first bed I received from a contractor was literally an email that went something like, Kitchen: 15k, Bathroom: 10k, Garage: 15k...Not very assuring. Shawn and his team were assuring from the get go. Communication with everyone on the team from his right-hand man, Oscar, and design wiz, Sara, to the plumber and electrician were streamlined by use of an app called Slack they use. This was so useful when you are working on a mult-month job and always have a ton of little questions or concerns. I could easily just shoot it out into the app and anyone on his team could respond. I loved that. And these guys are top-notch. Oscar did some amazing things in here. When we found an unexpected load-bearing beam, he expertly engineered a huge beam across the near-length of the kitchen that allowed us to fully open up the area...without hiring an engineer (my decision). That thing was solid. Then he took my dated fireplace and lathered it in multiple layers of concrete and mortar to make what is now a piece of modern art. Sara and Shawn both have an eye for design. When I sent a photo of one of my bathrooms to a friend she told me it looked with the W. In a few areas of the house they kind of nudged me to let them have some artistic leave and I am so glad they did. My master bath is now a study in what you should do for any small bathroom space and my laundry room has added about 100+ square feet to the home and functions as a mud room. All of the contractors he works with are exceptional as well. I will always use David O from Make it Drain plumbing and Irvin with Retiz Electric. Both of these guys are masters of their trades and very friendly and reliable too. Overall, I could not recommend Shawn and his team more. It was an honor to work with these guys. I worked with Shawn on the design and he was always openminded about what I wanted to do and willing to provide suggestions or recommendations. His team of subcontractors did quality work and were respectful of me and my home. I had lots of people in and out of my house and had full trust in them. Most importantly, Shawn is an excellent communicator. He is always a text or phone call away, and would make time in his busy schedule to drop by the house and meet with me as needed. I have heard horror stories from my friends of contractors who disappear in the middle of a project or fail to respond to requests for updates or questions. I had none of these problems with Shawn. My renovation turned into a much bigger project in terms of the amount of changes that were made, but it never felt hopeless or endless, and the end result made it all worth it. Here are a few of the things we appreciated: Professionalism - From our first conversation with RisherMartin, we felt as if we were dealing with true professionals. We interviewed many builders over the course of about a year without feeling like we'd found someone we could trust. As soon as we met with them, we knew we were in good hands. Communication - RisherMartin met with us in person at our home on a weekly basis and came with updated written progress of our project so we always knew what our current status was and what to expect in the coming week. We very rarely had to request information from them, but when we did have a question our calls/emails were always answered the same day (frequently within the hour). Quality - RisherMartin not only exceeded our expectations for quality on our entire project, they fixed several things we didn't even notice! Our experience with Storey Construction was absolutely HORRIBLE....a never-ending nightmare of…read moreincompetence. They constantly made mistakes that they then charged us to repair. They misrepresented their professionalism and abilities and then fraudulently charged us when we posted a truthful review on this website. The photos speak for themselves. We met with John and Ty many times at our home and at their flooring store regarding projects at our home. Ty the owner of Storey Construction offered to not send fraudulent charges he invoiced us months after we parted ways if we pulled down our review and signed a non-disclosure agreement. Seriously has to be one of the worst contractors in Austin. They talk down to the employees and bad mouth them on a daily basis. They yelled at us when expensive mistakes were made because "they didn't know what was going on." Since they are talking a 20% cut of your whole project they should know what's going on, but they don't and they blame the client's for being "difficult" when they can't open the new front door their guys installed. (Oh, and their guys installed it while gouging our new hardwood floor...repair was offered but we wanted nothing more to do with these amateurs.) Do yourself a favor and find another contractor; this one forces unhappy clients to sign NDAs and offers financial incentives to clients who will leave good reviews. This is not about money...I posted a 2-star review on June 1st, 2017, 3 weeks later we were fraudulently billed $1,100. When Ty was contacted via email about the bogus charges he would only speak over the phone and said the charges were generated 8 weeks after our final payment because of my Yelp review posted on June 1st. I have learned Yelp has no dedicated department to field intimidation threats from business owners. My husband was told by Ty the charges would "go away" if we pulled down the reviews and signed a non-disclosure agreement. The charges were for $1,100 we paid Ty's businesses close to $50,000 in total. We also have the final statement which shows they removed the $1,100 charge because it was bogus. Here's what happened, we ordered 5 new doors for install, 3 wood, 2 fiberglass. I wanted to order them pre-painted but was told by Ty and John unfinished was the way to go. They swore their guys were master painters and that the price would be cheaper as it would be a flat rate rather than hourly. We paid their flat rate in full before the doors even arrived. Then on the final bill they tried to charge us for 10 or 18 extra hours of work for the painting of the doors. That was never agreed to, there was never any change order sent and we proved the painting charges were included in the previous bill so the new charge was removed. Then we received a bill for the amount that they removed from our final bill in April on June 22nd. We sent Storey Construction a Certified Letter concerning our dispute with the bill. We also filed a complaint with the Austin Better Business Bureau to which they never responded but is on file for the next 3 years. There we have evidence to our claim. Instead of responding to our request to proof these charges were legitimate Ty sent the bill to collections in early July. Our only request in our BBB complaint was for the fraudulent charges to be vacated and for a written apology for our atrocious treatment. The mistakes to our home were ongoing to the point we mutually made a decision to part ways because their sub-contractors were too incompetent to complete the job without further damage. If you like being berated for requesting that the job is done right then this is the contractor for you. When John told his guys to skip the step of installing a door frame before installing the base boards; I waited for John to leave and instructed them not to install the base boards and I texted John a little later that I requested they not install the base boards yet. John drove back to my home to yell at me for being "difficult" before recognizing I was right. John was also the person who happily accepted two new fiberglass doors with the wrong in-swing. I was the one to catch that they both had wrong in-swings. I can't even list all of the mistakes we had to deal with but the worst is being told they'll "fix it." Your told you won't be charged more, but you will...they don't distinguish between the hours they work messing up something and the hours they work messing it up again. You'll end up paying at least 3 times when you have to hirer a real professional like we did to fix what their team did the first 2 trys. I have no doubt some customers had much experiences than we did, but I believe that far too many other Storey Construction customers have been silenced by NDAs that were signed to take care of bogus charges. That is how Ty Storey claimed to us "they take care of bad reviews."
