My second experience with Storey Construction involved a complete gutting & remodel of my mid-century kitchen. Ty helped me through selecting everything from the cabinets to the tiles. Of course the project ran behind schedule, but after all was said and done, the project only came in less than 1% above budget. Word of warning, John, the dad, can be try to make you happy by telling you what he thinks you want to hear. Don't be shy about getting in his face and pinning him down about what will be done when and getting exact dates. Once again I waited about six months before posting anything on Yelp. Our experience with Storey Construction was absolutely HORRIBLE....a never-ending nightmare of incompetence. They constantly made mistakes that they then charged us to repair. They misrepresented their professionalism and abilities and then fraudulently charged us when we posted a truthful review on this website. The photos speak for themselves. We met with John and Ty many times at our home and at their flooring store regarding projects at our home. Ty the owner of Storey Construction offered to not send fraudulent charges he invoiced us months after we parted ways if we pulled down our review and signed a non-disclosure agreement. Seriously has to be one of the worst contractors in Austin. They talk down to the employees and bad mouth them on a daily basis. They yelled at us when expensive mistakes were made because "they didn't know what was going on." Since they are talking a 20% cut of your whole project they should know what's going on, but they don't and they blame the client's for being "difficult" when they can't open the new front door their guys installed. (Oh, and their guys installed it while gouging our new hardwood floor...repair was offered but we wanted nothing more to do with these amateurs.) Do yourself a favor and find another contractor; this one forces unhappy clients to sign NDAs and offers financial incentives to clients who will leave good reviews. This is not about money...I posted a 2-star review on June 1st, 2017, 3 weeks later we were fraudulently billed $1,100. When Ty was contacted via email about the bogus charges he would only speak over the phone and said the charges were generated 8 weeks after our final payment because of my Yelp review posted on June 1st. I have learned Yelp has no dedicated department to field intimidation threats from business owners. My husband was told by Ty the charges would "go away" if we pulled down the reviews and signed a non-disclosure agreement. The charges were for $1,100 we paid Ty's businesses close to $50,000 in total. We also have the final statement which shows they removed the $1,100 charge because it was bogus. Here's what happened, we ordered 5 new doors for install, 3 wood, 2 fiberglass. I wanted to order them pre-painted but was told by Ty and John unfinished was the way to go. They swore their guys were master painters and that the price would be cheaper as it would be a flat rate rather than hourly. We paid their flat rate in full before the doors even arrived. Then on the final bill they tried to charge us for 10 or 18 extra hours of work for the painting of the doors. That was never agreed to, there was never any change order sent and we proved the painting charges were included in the previous bill so the new charge was removed. Then we received a bill for the amount that they removed from our final bill in April on June 22nd. We sent Storey Construction a Certified Letter concerning our dispute with the bill. We also filed a complaint with the Austin Better Business Bureau to which they never responded but is on file for the next 3 years. There we have evidence to our claim. Instead of responding to our request to proof these charges were legitimate Ty sent the bill to collections in early July. Our only request in our BBB complaint was for the fraudulent charges to be vacated and for a written apology for our atrocious treatment. The mistakes to our home were ongoing to the point we mutually made a decision to part ways because their sub-contractors were too incompetent to complete the job without further damage. If you like being berated for requesting that the job is done right then this is the contractor for you. When John told his guys to skip the step of installing a door frame before installing the base boards; I waited for John to leave and instructed them not to install the base boards and I texted John a little later that I requested they not install the base boards yet. John drove back to my home to yell at me for being "difficult" before recognizing I was right. John was also the person who happily accepted two new fiberglass doors with the wrong in-swing. I was the one to catch that they both had wrong in-swings. I can't even list all of the mistakes we had to deal with but the worst is being told they'll "fix it." Your told you won't be charged more, but you will...they don't distinguish between the hours they work messing up something and the hours they work messing it up again. You'll end up paying at least 3 times when you have to hirer a real professional like we did to fix what their team did the first 2 trys. I have no doubt some customers had much experiences than we did, but I believe that far too many other Storey Construction customers have been silenced by NDAs that were signed to take care of bogus charges. The painters and construction contractors were quick, efficient and easy to communicate with as well as being clean and respectful of the property. Ty was recommended by a friend when I decided to replace my water heater and bring my home up to code. He quoted me a price and when his crew found that the job was more complicated than anticipated, he didn't charge me more than what he had quoted. He and his crew did a great job. I was referred to Ty Story by a very good friend of mine and her recommendations I value! Ty spent hours with me discussing all aspects of the renovations that I wanted to do. It meant a lot to me to really get the right idea about all that I had in mind with getting rid of some hideous arches and low bearing beams that were right in the middle of my house! I left the country for 5 weeks while this was being done (and his sister company, replacing new floors as well!) I had total faith that Ty would do exactly what we discussed while I was sitting on the beach in Bali. I didn't worry for a minute, and more excited to come home to my new house! Then, they replaced our water heater really quickly after a big weekend with house guests fried ol' Bessie. In 2013 we hired Storey Construction to replace our siding and repaint the exterior of our house. We had previously existing water damage under our siding that had affected our health. We stressed repeatedly to Ty that we wanted every bit of anything remotely damaged to be removed, that it was a grave matter of the future health of our family and we were willing to pay for the labor and new materials required. As work progressed, our first issue arose. Ty convinced us that we needed to replace our back door and that he could match it. By the time we realized their new door did not completely match the others within the small room, they had discarded the old door. Around the time they were going to replace the door, we had to leave town. We told them if they could not come before noon that day, to not come until Monday. Against our express request, the crew still came when we were out of town. They took our back door off the hinges and had full access to our house when we were out of town against our wishes. The new door did not work properly and we could see daylight under it. After several ineffective attempts by the crew to fix it, my husband gave up and removed and re-hung the door himself. (Part of the problem was that they attempted to install the door without removing all the styrofoam packing.) No refund for this work was asked or given. One day I warned the two men working on the siding that it was about to rain and asked that they wait to open our exterior siding. They insisted on exposing the wall they were working on anyway saying they could finish before it rained - even though I was the only one looking at the weather radar. I repeatedly told them I didn't want the underboard to get wet and they ignored my pleas and even told me "I didn't need to watch them work." Yes, I did. It began raining before they were able to completely cover the underboard. I hope no new mold was created there. After the siding was replaced and our work with Storey Construction was complete and paid for, we had another company come in to do remediation on the home interior. In the process of removing an interior wall, it became apparent that Ty's crew did NOT adhere to his bid and did NOT remove all the water damaged board, even though we stressed over and over that besides just being good construction practice it was a major health issue for us. We took photos and sent them to Ty, telling him we removed the offending boards and asking him to replace them. He refused without an additional payment of $1000. He said we told him to leave that water damaged board. No. Why in the world would we, when we just expressly paid him around $12,000 to do just that? AND had multiple conversations on the importance and consequences to our health of not removing all the damaged board?! In an earlier conversation he told me that he agreed that we had problems with the siding crew and that he would probably not use them again. However, he would not allow anyone else but this same crew to come back and fix the area, and only if we paid him an additional $1000 to replace the boards they should have already removed according to our bid and conversations. It was about a half to one day job for one person and less than $300 in materials at builder's cost. We declined to pay the additional $1000 and negotiations drug on for weeks. Meanwhile, the wall was open to the outside with only plastic sheeting to protect and insulate. It was turning cold and raining off and on. We agreed to pay half the $1000 just to get it done and protect the house from further damage. He still refused. Once again my husband eventually had to do the work himself that we had paid Storey Construction for. We later filed in small claims for the amount of $1000 (the amount Ty Storey determined for this area) since we had to go buy materials and do the work ourselves. He hired a lawyer (for a small claim of $1000!) who informed us he would pay no more than $500 and in return we would be required to sign an agreement not to say anything negative about him on social media or ever sue him for any defects in his work that we might find in the future. Frankly it's worth more to us to warn others about this company, especially when your health is involved. The painting work didn't look too bad at first, but soon I noticed a few places where the trim paint was already peeling less than a year later. read more

While I'm sure Storey does great work, I, unfortunately did not have the opportunity to take advantage of it. I contacted Ty on a thursday morning. We spoke about my desire to get a closet put into a bedroom quickly. While he did not have any availability with his crew, he told me he'd contact someone else and see if he can squeeze me in. I was promised that he'd call me back by 3pm. 6-7pm rolls by and since I haven't heard from him, I sent him a text. I didn't receive any response to the text until Friday saying that he thinks we'll be good to go and that he'll let me know by Saturday at the latest. Again, I received no contact from him on Saturday, and in fact, nothing until Tuesday. When he contacted me on Tuesday, I was not near my phone, so he left a message. I called him back 10 minutes later and he didn't pick up, so I left him a message. NO CALL BACK - surprise?!?! I commend Ty for being super helpful, nice, and willing to work with me and this is why I gave 2 stars instead of 1. But he he really needs to be better about following up when he says he will. Initial contact with customers is the most important first impression, and the one he left on me was extremely poor. read more
