I was surprised how much I liked this place. I was not expecting much having not heard anything about this place. On a whim we decided to try it out for lunch. I had a mushroom burger. I was not asked and it was cooked medium, I would have preferred a little less but it still had a good taste. There was plenty of cooked mushrooms but no sauce. The side of mac & cheese was tasty. My company had the French dip that looked like it had a good helping of beef. The side of fries had a light seasoned salt giving it a little extra flavor. Service was very attentive and polite, possibly because there were not many people for the late lunch crowd. The place was well lit with plenty of windows and looked clean. I have visited the breakfast barn four times, and from the first to most recent, everything is always on point! The first time was what drew us in! The pancakes!!! Host was Summer and was very friendly and knowledgeable about the offerings that they had. I ordered one pancake to try and was very pleased. I ordered the pancake to eat first snd was taken care of. Don't take 3 as an overly harsh critique or mean that you take a pass on the place. If you didn't know, this took the place of BurgerFiend and I much prefer this establishment given the lack of breakfast places in the area. When I walked in there were quite a few people waiting, but that's expected on a Sunday morning. I picked a spot at the counter. My server warned me there was a 40-minute wait on food and I totally appreciate that warning. The serving staff was extremely nice, every time my glass was near empty I was asked if I wanted a refill and everyone was working hard. I ordered the breakfast quesadilla with sausage. It was good. A nice twist was the include hash browns in the quesadilla which added a great crunch. And it was very filling. If you prefer your food somewhat bland, this is your dish. The salsa added needed flavor but nothing really stood out. I think if they add a chorizo option it would be great. Breakfast Barn has a feel of a work in progress and I am totally willing to support them through their growing pains. I was told their menu is a work in progress and I hope they add dishes that set them apart from the usual fare. First time I tried to go for breakfast, there was a 45 minute wait, not because it was full but because of staffing issues as there were lots of empty tables. I get lots of places are having this problem. Tried again this morning for breakfast and was pretty underwhelmed. The ice tea didn't taste fresh brewed and the coffee was overly bitter. My omelet and hashbrows were okay but I'm not even sure what I was served for bacon? It was thin and wavy and had squared-off ends. It had a smoky taste, but that was NOT real bacon. I noticed this place one day on the way to work, so I thought we would give this new breakfast place a try on a Saturday morning. Cedar Rapids is pretty short on breakfast restaurants and my homemade stuff is hard to compete but I thought I would pamper myself for a change. The service here was good and the decor was pleasant. (I had been here before when it was Burgerfeen, so I noticed the dramatic change.) Mostly older patrons here, but nothing seemed too off at first glance. I ordered the cinnamon roll type of french toast, which come without any options to make it a "complete" breakfast. The only way to get sausage and hashbrowns added was to pay the full a la carte add-on price, which basically doubled the price of the "meal". For $4 you get two mini sausage patties that may have amounted to about as much meat as you would expect from one simple McDonald's sized sausage patty. Based on the other review here it seems that the patties are likely NOT pork. I tend to not eat much pork but there are certain items that one expects to come made out of pork and I am NOT religious about my food. I think if the owner is against pork, he should inform his customers so they will not feel misled. I really think the bottom line that makes me unlikely to return to this restaurant is how they nickle-and-dime you when it comes to buying breakfast and wanting to make it complete by adding items that are common in a complete breakfast. When you pay $8 for french toast, it would be fair to charge a more reasonable amount for some hash browns and (maybe) an ounce of griddled meat. read more

We came here about a month ago and had a not great experience so we came back today for breakfast. We walked in and were told there would be a 10-15 minute wait for a table, no big deal it's a holiday and there's not a ton of places open. We were seated, ordered our food, and then waited for our food. After 50 minutes of waiting we asked our server for an ETA on when our food (2 orders of country fried steak and 2 pancakes) would be up, she checked with the kitchen and we were told that our food was being finished up and would be the next out of the kitchen. Over the next 10 minutes we watched food come out to other tables, but still not ours. Leading me to believe that our food had in fact not even been started on when we were told we were up next. After about an hour and 10 minutes, we received our food. The food was good, it was warm and exactly what you'd expect from a diner. But still not really any explanation as to what took so long. My husband went up to pay and I would assume it was the manager up front all decked out in 4th of July attire, just stating "Yeah we've been slammed." No apology, no explanation. I'm sorry, but I've worked in restaurants for almost 10 years, and considering it was simple breakfast food we ordered it shouldn't have taken more than 20-30 minutes to make the food even when slammed. Also, if your kitchen is struggling to keep up, why are you still seating tables? And if you're still seating tables, why aren't you providing guests with a heads up that yes a table has come available but the kitchen is falling behind and it's gonna be quite awhile on food. You'd think as the manager when you see that ticket lead times are pushing 50 minutes you'd pay a visit to tables to apologize or offer some form of explanation? It's not like they were too busy running food..We definitely weren't the only ones experiencing this frustration as all of the tables around us shared our same experience.
