So I do love and frequent this place and my review still holds, BUT the nickel and dining of their customers has gotten outrageous. First they include a 3% credit card fee. This is typically doesn't amount to much and I get that they're a small business, BUT it feels bad. Build the 3% into your prices. It just feels like you're taking advantage of your customers and can be easily avoided. And yes you can ask for this to be removed, so heads up on that. In addition, and this REALLY irritates me, there is now a $2.50 up charge if you want syrup with your pancakes. Now the syrup is real delicious maple syrup... BUT this feels really gross. Build it into your price. To my knowledge there is no maple syrup alternative (fake syrup) that you can use instead. So if you want a basic condiment at a breakfast restaurant that is extra. Once again build it into your prices The place still gets 4 stars because the staff is lovely, and the food good... but there's a bad taste in my mouth from these extra charges. read more

We arrived around 11 on a Saturday morning and had less than a 5 minute wait. From start to finish, the service was outstanding with a typical diner tempo while still not feeling rushed. To start, we each had a Vanilla Iced Coffee which hit the spot! I ordered the Fried Chicken Sandwich and my boyfriend ordered the Southwest Omelette, both were outstanding and came out nice and hot! We come here so often now because of how delicious the food is. We have had to wait before but I think only 20 minutes at most. The restaurant is spacious and has the most fun decorations and ambience. The staff is always so sweet. The menu has a lot of different options for everyone, and the iced coffee is always delicious, regardless of flavor. I was excited to try this place in hopes it would be one of my new go-tos. Unfortunately, the service was pretty awful. Didn't get a smile from the host or servers. I asked for decaf coffee, never got the coffee. I then asked for hot tea and it took 15-20 minutes to get my tea, while I was sitting outside in the cold so that wasn't awesome. Here for breakfast with my kids before the Cubs game. Got here early, so getting a seat wasn't a problem. Very clean place, good music. The good - the food was pretty good. I had the chorizo hash. I'd give it four stars. The sauce was a good bit too sweet for my taste, but it was otherwise great. My oldest had the steak n eggs, which he enjoyed thoroughly. My middle one (my eating consigliere) eschewed his normal chocolate chip pancakes for chicken and waffles. The fried chicken was pretty good (I tried it), and he loved it. He would give it five stars. My little one went rogue and ordered a chicken Caesar salad at 9 am. She didn't like it. I tried it and thought it was pretty good. Coffee was excellent, as was the fresh squeezed juice. Where this place takes a hit, though, is the service. We were here before it got really busy, yet the servers were really inattentive. My coffee sat empty for a long time and I had to ask for it to be refilled. The waters were never refilled at all. They forgot my toast. I asked for some jalapeños to be mixed in with my dish and they gave me a side of raw jalapeños instead. Icing on the cake - they slipped in an additional 3 percent on top of the bill for a credit card surcharge. That just dropped it from a three star to a two. read more

I love this cute spot by the train. The staff there is really friendly. But I love sitting outside in the summer and having a nice simple breakfast. The train and traffic can be loud a little loud, but this is Chicago and plenty of other restaurants by the train. It's not as loud if you are inside. The overall experience was great! Inside can get pretty packed and you might have to wait longer if you have a group of 3 or more. They do have bar seats so might be a good choice if you don't want to wait for a table. I got the BLT Benedict and it was just a bit too much sauce for me. Seemed like it was a bit drenched in it. If it was less sauce it would have been perfect as the eggs were cooked perfectly. A great addition to the area and I will definitely be back to try some other dishes. read more

Just got back from my 3rd try of this place. Wanted to give it a few tries since it seems so popular. It's interesting because if you pass by or try to get a seat past 9am, it's always super busy but honestly the traffic energy does not at all match up to the mid energy this place is serving up. I don't even understand what Breakfast House is trying to be. Is it a breakfast / brunch spot since it's only open until 2:30 PM? Is it supposed to be a Latin themed joint since a majority of their menu includes Latin inspired dishes? Is it a diner???? I have no idea. Speaking of their menu, there's absolutely no range. You have a choice of dozens of egg centric dishes or Latin cuisine. Today I had the breakfast croissant which had an extremely large, unsalted omelette and burnt pieces of bacon. The potatoes they serve as the side are also basic, diced up potatoes with no seasoning. I also ordered a pumpkin latte because they were advertising it and I almost spit it out because it taste exactly like orange juice??? How does a breakfast/brunch place get a latte wrong? It's literally milk lol. Sadly I left about 80% of my meal unfinished and waited for my partner to finish their food. They said the burrito was good which is why they have two stars and not one. Nothing special about the staff, they try to usher people in and out because of how busy they are. Again, I don't get the traffic. There's nothing special about this place except for maybe the cute neighborhood spot vibes but that's it. Maybe they should just transition to a Latin spot since they seem to put together creative menus around that type of cuisine. Portions are large and service is quick. Pleasant staff (they always remember repeat guests) and a fantastic manager (Paulina) that is always on top of her game. We came here because we were nearby for a Cubs game and this was in walking distance. It was an absolutely incredible breakfast. First, when we got seated the family of 3 next to us was having a major Karen moment. They were demanding their entire meal be comped because one of the meals came out AFTER the other two people had already finished both their breakfasts -- to their point, that is NOT good. But this family was being very rude to this waitress who clearly did not have the power to make any decision about their request. After complaining that they could not get in touch with a manager, the manager finally did come out. I appreciate that she owned up to their mistake (the server gave the meal to another table by mistake) and she did comp the whole meal. We ordered the fluffiest, lightest pancakes I've ever eaten in my whole life. And the fried chicken was so juicy in the middle - I honestly still dream about this meal and wish I could easily hop on a plane just to eat Breakfast House's food again. read more

For the price they are so stingy on the toppings! I ordered the spinach and mushroom omelette and there were like 5 leaves of spinach in the whole thing not even joking. I should also mention it was over salted to the point to where I almost wanted to say something but my waiter was already acting kind of like he didn't care about me so I just kept quiet. Lots of patio seating and very friendly staff. Our water glasses were always filled and our server actively engaged with our little one. Apparently, this location has only been opened a week or so and what happened to us, may have been due to opening jitters.... As it seemed to be taking forever for our food, I waved our server over and found out that our food had been served to someone else. He immediately offered that our entire meal would be comped and he'd have our food on the table in 5 minutes. He was true to his word on both accounts. While the long wait and mixup was not ideal, the server did handle it and the food was good. We hope to try them again the next time we are in town. read more

What a wonderful place. They have staff from Ecuador, Mexico and Colombia, and it's reflected in their wonderful cuisine. I had the Chorizo Hash (AMAZING), but my Mom swears by the Vegan Chorizo. For Christmas they deck their halls with all kinds of decorations, and I love their playlist, but it's worth a visit just to see their seasonal artwork on their chalkboard (right now it's a cartoon of every staff person surrounding the Grinch). Being a frequent visitor here, I'm saddened that something has changed with their service as of late. I tend to order carry out lunch often and never had an issue. Today I called 3 times where they pretended not to hear me (l called other people and they said they could hear me fine) AND when I used my husband's phone, same thing happened. When I called the 4th time they said no problem could you hold and placed me on hold for 3 minutes after which they hung up. I live close but not close enough to go in and order in person. We came here on a Monday mid-morning, so the place was not busy. We were met at the door and seated right away. My wife had a grilled cheese breakfast sandwich (on special) on fresh sour dough bread with a honey mustard sauce. She loved it. I had the Paris omelette with guest cheese and shaved ham. My friend and I stopped by the Breakfast House on Halsted. I had the chopped salad which was scant compared to what was listed on the menu. My lunch companion ordered the fried chicken was just ok, nothing special. In anticipation of the food being "absolutely delicious" (has it had bee described to me), I ordered the corn cakes to go. Well, my $16 salad was barely enough to satisfy my hunger, my friend's chicken dinner was lacking in taste. It was fried pretty hard on the outside, and had some areas of pink inside. Nevertheless, paid for the meal and left. I also paid also paid $5 for a cup of tea( nothing special something you buy from a store). I tried the corn cakes for dinner, and they were horrible. They were dry as dirt, and not completely cooked inside. I decided to write this review because this is the second Breakfast House that I have visited and the food was an ultimate let down and certainly not worth the prices. If I could give it zero stars, I would. NOT worth my money. read more
