I had my first tattoo done here. Nick did a great job, it's small, he made me feel comfortable through out the whole process. The only bad complaint I have is a few days later I had a concern that I needed some advise on as it was my first tattoo, I left a message and NEVER got a call back, so that's pretty disappointing. I had to seek out advise elsewhere and I shouldn't have had to. I will most likely use the place again but a different artist as someone else there was recommended for it. read more

My wife had been to Matt to get a flower tattoo on her upper arm and he did fantastic. Contacted him again todo a sleeve he partially did the sleeve and then we never heard from him again. Be careful of this guy, there's been other reviews to as he just doesn't answer certain clients. I paid over $1000 and the guy doesn't wanna text us back or reply to Instagram. What a joke of a company and artist. Completely unfinished, multiple lines not filled in and really a sloppy prison tattoo if I do say so myself. I am not pleased what so ever in this and how he's just not going to finish the tattoo. My dude my wife and I are throwing money at you and have tried contacting you. Went in to see Rory and I was completely taken back... I provided multiple pictures as well as the space I wanted the tattoo at a month in advance... i asked him to put something together for me and when I arrived to my app he had nothing... He was rude, cold, unprofessional and down right lazy. I waited for almost an hour for him to get ready... He made the 1 flower he stenciled way too big.. and when I asked him to make it smaller multiple times he made me feel like he was put out to do so.. I made my app for 3 hours... it took him less than an hour to finish the one flower he stenciled... so we just touched up one of my other already existing flowers which is not what I wanted.. after he again acting like a total jerk when I asked him to do so... I was so upset and anxious I contacted his boss.. In turn did not do anything... after Rory texted me and called me a c**t and told me to fu**ing die.. his boss still wont do anything about it. Rory did not give me what I want nor did he make me feel welcomed, cared for, comfortable.. nothing. He charged me for 2 hours of tattooing yet we were only tattooing for maybe an hour and a half. read more

The above was my review right after my tattoo by Brian. Way to many months have past, and this dumb blond obviously forgot to hit "post review". Anyways, way back when I was showing off my latest tattoo to my family back in the Netherlands my sister got so enthusiastic she booked a flight (May 2017), told me to "please book appointment with Brian" and came over for him to do the same tattoo on her. I feel should explain; for years I've been trying to get my sister her 1st tattoo, and for it to be a sisters one. I showed her many ideas before and usually got a ", not sure", until I came up with a rough draft for a sisters/family design (as to have my family close, having lived overseas and missing them daily), as I showed it to my sister she fell in love with the simple design on paper and said she would love this, Yes! she wanted one too. She wanted me to help her find a good artist in Amsterdam blahblah, moving forward... for myself I found Brian who made my design absolutely gorgeous so when sis saw it she knew she wanted him to ink her as well. I've only been to a few tattoo shops over the years, but Breaking Ink has given me the best experience and quality for my money. I went in a few months ago just to see how much something would cost, and ended up getting the tattoo that same day because everything was so good. All 3 guys that work here (Nick, Rory and Mike) are excellent at what they do and you can find tons of pictures of their work on here, the store's Facebook page and on Instagram. Each artist specializes in something different, and I've had two tattoos done by Rory so far. The first one was a simple jellyfish that my daughter drew- nothing that pushed his skills to the limit by any means, but he took his time preparing everything, making sure the tools and space were clean, and I appreciated that. I've been to two shops in Portland that basically rushed things because they had a lot of people, but that's no excuse to rush cleanliness. My second tattoo was of baby Krishna, the Hindu god of preservation. The image, again, may not have been the most challenging thing Rory's done, but it made it look gorgeous with fine detail put into things like the eyes and eyelashes. And for the price it cost, it's hard to imagine going anywhere else for the same tattoo. He's also friendly, does some great work on murals, and has recommended some stupid-good places to eat. I haven't talked to Mike much but he's a cool guy, and Nick is very educated on the things he's into. When he saw I was getting Krishna done, he came up and talked a little about the Hindu religion, the temple down the street that practices Krishna Consciousness, and more. It was really cool to hear that. I have nothing bad to say about the shop or the guys working there. Any bad feedback the place gets is from uppity people. I've been there when rude would-be customers come in, being very vague about what they want with no examples or images for a reference, and expect the artist to automatically know what they want right down to the last detail. Even then, the guys weren't rude to them and did their best to answer all the questions. For sure check them out if you're in the area. read more

I was told I would get a free touch up on my tattoo done. I called and left a few voicemails and stopped by in person midday on a weekday and no one was at their new location and no sign of when they would be back. The tattoo I got was $50 but I should have gone someplace else and paid more so it would have looked better in the end. I was told by another tattoo artist who I talked to about options with fixing the blurred lines (was told it's not possible) that my artist had super heavy hands which caused the tattoo to look messy only a couple years later. I'm not impressed with my experience overall. read more

Don't let this hole in the wall shop fool you. Breaking Ink provides extremely high end work at a low cost. I had talked with several tattoo artists for a very large piece I wanted done. After meeting with Nick, I knew I found the place. I was very surprised that he charges by the piece and not by the hour, like a lot of other places do. It took five sessions (about 20 hours) to finish my tattoo and cost half of what I thought it would have. Nick was great to work with. He took my ideas and was able to put them together to form the amazing tattoo I have now. I appreciate that Nick was honest about his skills as a tattoo artist and that he wanted to make sure I was happy with what he drew up in his sketches before he tattooed me. I felt very comfortable and had a great time getting the tattoo (minus the physical discomfort of getting tattooed). Nick is very detailed oriented and made some suggestions while I was getting tattooed that brought even more life to my piece. I can't recommend him enough and I am already thinking about getting another tattoo from him. read more

Here we go again - to explain, and just to be clear, I almost never give 5/5 because I believe 3/5 is acceptable. Right? I mean, that's passing, meets expectations, did everything right, but not necessarily going above and beyond. 4/5 is going the extra mile, did everything right but also gave that "little bit more" to delight the customer. So, when I give a 5, for some reason, I feel compelled to explain why it's not just because meh, they were this, or that, and 5 is the easy out just because I wasn't disappointed in some way so here is your 1 star. So, I don't have a huge number of tattoos but of the 5 pieces I now have - Rory has been far and away the best experience thus far. And everyone at B.I. Is really nice and helpful. The place is clean, comfortable, bright, easy to access, and super reasonable - I can attest to the fact that I have paid as much for much much less complicated work. The piece Rory did for me is by far the most beautiful work I have had done. He went the extra mile to make what would have been a simple (that is to say, my 'style' if you will is extremely plain work) flat, dare I say boring, piece really pop. Everyone who has seen it so far has said the same thing. "Beautiful". I am sure there are many other fine choices and great artists out there but Breaking Ink is top of the game.
