I contacted Joseph Rose plumbing in Durham, North Carolina about three plumbing problems I was…read morehaving. They scheduled to come by my house at 1 PM on Monday. By about 1:45 they had not arrived. I called the company, but no one answered. I left a phone message. I was called back in a couple of hours and, and the secretary/scheduler informed me that the job they were on was taking longer than expected. She then asked me if they could reschedule for tomorrow. I stated that that was not convenient for me. I finally relented and agreed to meet them on Tuesday. If I recall, the one technician was about 30-45 minutes late. She informed me that she had not been told about fixing the lack of shower hot water or about cleaning the mold out of our faucets but had only been told about cleaning the water heater! She arrived and started to flush the water heater. She then informed me that her new water pump that she needed for that job was defective and kept tripping the circuit breaker. She asked me if she could come back the next day at 8:30 AM! This was early for me in terms of usually sleeping longer, but I agreed in order to get the ordeal finished. She came with a young helper, and they completed the work. Rose appeared to be competent and, furthermore, she communicated well with me which was an appreciated change from her handler/scheduler. She and I talked about the benefit of the whole house water filter. She stated that she would get some information and send a proposal. That never happened. As you can gather, there are two significant problems with Joseph Rose plumbing, according to my experience with them. One is the absence of adequate and efficient communication, and the other is a lack of follow-up on what they say they will do.

The city of Raleigh refuses to check their water meter or replace it without an invoice from a plumber. Our water bill was higher than usual the last few months. I did a toilet leak test and found no leaks. Nothing else on the property showed a leak. I called the water department and they were less than helpful. Despite our bill going DOWN after turning ON our sprinkler system, they insisted there was a leak. Matthew's Plumbing sent two guys out who listened to the story, checked the meter as I did, checked the crawl space (no leaks) and listened to me complain about the water department. I was expecting to pay $200+, instead they only charged me $75. These people are honest. I was upset enough that I would have paid the $200 or more had they asked me to do so. Today's visit is why I'll keep doing business with them.

He arrived within the window of time promised. Michael quickly and expertly assessed the situation, diagnosed the problems, and proceeded to share the plan. He had all the parts with him on his truck and had the busted toilet fill valve along with a new shut off valve replaced and working within an hour or so. Michael also took the time to educate us on what was happening, why, and other repairs needed to prevent further damage. They began work without approval from me or my insurance company, and later classified the job as an "emergency" -- despite the fact that it was scheduled during regular business hours. This appears to have been a deliberate move to justify inflated charges. Their invoice included questionable fees: an unjustified emergency service charge, inflated equipment monitoring hours, and duplicate charges for equipment that may have simply been relocated between rooms. I submitted a detailed written dispute and requested a revised invoice. Despite multiple follow-ups, Roto-Rooter has not responded. To make matters worse, they submitted billing after my insurance claim was closed, meaning I'm now being asked to pay out-of-pocket for charges that should have been handled properly from the start. This lack of transparency and accountability is unacceptable. I'm sharing my experience to warn others: get everything in writing, scrutinize the invoice, and don't assume your insurance will cover what they bill.
