Truly a great find in an small out of the way store in a basically residential area. I would never have found it on my own! Great wood oven lightly baked oysters, followed by a grilled Caesar salad rounded out with a polenta lasagna. All really fresh tasting and just the right size. Wonderful wine list, certainly not large but very much on the mark for the menu and fair pricing. I normally reserve 5 stars for a really good fine dining, but this bistro fully deserves them! Oh yes the individual pizza prepared in a wood burning oven are also great! read more

Had dinner here with a couple of great friends who introduced us to the menu. The wait staff were very friendly and the cooks were also as i got to visit the kitchen on my way to the restroom. Definitely unique dining experience with the ambiance of the wood fire oven casting lights and smells that only entice your tastebuds more as we waited for our food. I had the steak and potatoes and goat cheese au gratin. The flap steak was seasoned well and roasted to perfection on the fire oven. You can taste the wood fire in most of the menu items. It kind of reminded me of camping flavored food with a definite better menu :). We will be making this a "Regular" stop on our travels to the coast from now on. Quarter to 8 on a Saturday night, walked in and got service within 20 minutes. It's warm inside due to the brick pizza oven but, I always forget the California gets breezy and cool quickly after sunset. I had a fabulous waiter...blue hair, amazing mustache, and a sheriff's badge on his suspenders. Very attentive and accommodating, even wrote down the general recipe for the wild mushroom cobbler. Extensive wine list, and had I not been driving would have gladly indulged but had a pot of tea instead. So, I was torn between 2 appetizers and just ordered them both. The marrow bone with crostini and some sort of cheese was excellent...nice and buttery, easily spread on the crostini. The other appetizer was the wild mushroom cobbler and I have to say that if you don't order anything else on the menu, you HAVE to order the mushroom cobbler!!! The only thing I can compare it to is the mushroom soup they used to have at J. Alexander's, so if you loved that soup you'll love this dish. I seriously thought about ordering another just to have for breakfast in the morning. For my main, I had the beef cheek with jalapeno and tomato polenta. I've never had cheek before but, I think it might be my new best friend! OMG...mouthwatering and definitely succulent. Polenta wasn't spicy, which for me was a good thing, I was a little worried about the jalapeno but there wasn't any heat and the pieces were easy to fork out. Then, I couldn't not have dessert! So, I got the chocolate marscapone cheesecake, and i nibbled a little on the way home and it is phenomenal! Nice and moist, not overly chocolately. This is a great restaurant in Eureka. I will definitely stop in here again before I leave the Humboldt County area. Also, I didn't have a problem finding a spot to park on the street. read more

New favorite place to go in town. Very hip. Can't go wrong with anything on the menu. Menu changes daily. Decent prices. Decent portion sizes. We loved everything that hit the table. Appetizers we ordered - Mushroom cobbler, Kobe beef carpaccio, squid stuffed with shrimp all Yum!! Kale and butternut squash salad yum! Entrees were great too! Braised short ribs served w/potatoes and carrots, wild mushroom creamy pasta dish, and my favorite the cheesy polenta veggie lasagna!! Some of the best creme brûlée and tiramisu I've had in a while. We were not disappointed with anything we ordered. Great service and ambience. Great date place with a wine bar right next door to start you off! I love brick oven places. The pizza was exceptional with sunflower seed pesto and pistachio nuts! My daughter had the gnocci with game hen and my son had the skirt steak. It was all very good. The wine selection was great as well. Only downside was that it was very loud. That's what you get when a place is so popular. read more

Lovely place! Technically a 4.5 star, but round up because it is a great place. Food is interesting, fresh and good. Very cool to watch them make it too. I sat at the bar and watched my food being made and fired up. Their homemade bread is delicious. I had the mushroom cobbler, one of the citrus salads (very good), and duck prociutto pizza with quail egg and asparagus. Service was pleasant. I hope they stay in business for a long time. Had dinner here while driving south along the coast. The polenta Lasagna was great, and my girlfriend's pappardelle was also delicious. Service was attentive and friendly. We sat at the bar, which was interesting, because we had a full view of the kitchen and the brick oven, but it did get a little warm -- thought not enough to detract from the food! I enjoyed the food a lot, the noise level was that of a large raging party, it was fun and festive. The service was prompt and full of style (the guy in lederhosen was a trip). Our waitress got on hands and knees under the table to fix a short leg. all in all it was a nice experience. I'm not rating it high because it was a bit crowded and the food was good but not 5 star, more two and a half star. It's the service and style of the place that bring it up, and the fact they can pull it off in Eureka, a nasty little meth town. Also the waiting room is a bit of strange style, it's a wine tasting room just adjacent the restaurant. Yum yum yum! I'm posting this review because the "brick bird" hen (an entire hen with rice and a peppery sauce) I had for dinner was delicious!! Great ambiance - a bit small - reservations recommended but we got in after a short wait, which we spent drinking wine at "Two Doors Down" - not near any busy commercial area - service was decent (our waitress was nice but disappeared a couple of times when we needed water refills). Also the bread and olive oil at the table was good. We had a Salumi plate that was average. My meal took awhile, but it was a small kitchen that cooked an entire hen for me so it was to be expected. I felt bad for my table-mate who only ordered a salad (which was tasty too, but took so long considering my order). read more

We ate here one night on our honeymoon en route from Portland to San Francisco. Despite the great meals we had in each of those cities, our simple and delicious meal at Brick & Fire continues to stand out. While we were probably destined to like this place after a friendly gentleman at the bar bought us a round of drinks, it was the service and quality of the food made us wish we had a similar eatery here in Virginia. We had a fairly simple meal of pizza, oysters and salad, and it was all just perfectly done. Also, the wine list, which features a wide variety of bottles at ridiculously affordable prices, rivaled some of the best of our trip. Visited as a tourist on a Friday evening and made a reservation. Small place so must reserve. Split pea soup was super good: rich, brimming with the pea flavor and accented by the wild boar 'ham'. I also had a specialty pizza and left quite satisfied. My wife had two small plates: wild mushroom cobbler that was very good. But, she wanted the other wild mushroom dish but 'sorry, not available'. Their supplier did not deliver the shrooms. Bad form for a place regarded as the best eatery in town. Also had the grilled hearts of romaine salad which was very good and highly recommended. Server was just OK. Tall dude was great but not our server. Great wine selection and some good local craft beers. Definitely worth a visit and will return if we ever find myself in Eureka again. read more

I can't tell you how much I love bistros! Pearl Alley Bistro in Santa Cruz was the beginning of the love affair. I always look in every town for bistro recommendations. Surprise! It was under my nose all the time (OK so as long as it was established). It was recommended by my daughter and her fiance. The service was attentive but not in your face, leisurely dining experience. Better to reserve in advance or it will take some time to get seated. However, if you can be patient, your wait will be rewarded with excellent food and service. We had two starters (mushroom cobbler and calamari) and two pizzas (one with sausage and one with smoked duck). Pizzas made in the brick oven were just perfect. Been here several times. Loved each visit. Even without reservations we have not waited but a few minutes (less than 10). But have to tell you about one particular night. Had reservations, seated promptly. Our 4 year old grandson was with us. Knowing there would be little on the menu for him I packed his favorite meal: Tuna on white with the crust cut off, juice box, and apple slices. When we arrived I spoke to our waiter telling him I had brought along a little meal for the youngster and asked if they could plate it for him when the time came. He enthusiastically said yes, but OMG the waiter was just the best. When he gave us the specials for the night he bent down near our grandson's ear and added one more "tuna on white, juice and apple slices!" Our little grandson's face just lit up! He was thrilled. We ordered appetizers one of which is their FABULOUS mushroom cobbler. Well, I could have saved the tuna, our grandson ate almost a whole one himself. It IS wonderful!! But then the waiter brought our meal and served our grandson first. Not only had they plated it, but they put it on a special plate, with garnishes and brought him a glass filled with ice for his juice box. His apple slices were not just dumped on his plate but "arranged" nicely. We had found the wait staff here to be great, but after this special evening was made even better by their sweetness towards a little customer, we think they EACH deserve FIVE stars!! Our food, as always was terrific, our experience was fabulous. We have brought out of town guests to dinner with great results and we tell everyone they should try it. Called to make a Togo order and the lady hung up on me. So I called back and she sounded annoyed when I ask for a pizza. Oh well. Then asked if they had creme brûlée tonight and she said no. No biggee. Then asked if they had the special peach shortcake (which I've personally HAD) and saw the reviews when I was looking to order and she very rudely said" um no? Don't know why we'd have that we've never had that." Cancelled my order and went else where. Great food but I'll give my money to someone who doesn't want to be RUDE! read more

This place is very nice - probably the best place for dinner in Arcata/Eureka area. It is a great atmosphere, and the staff are super friendly. The braised greens were excellent - red chard, spinach and kale, peppers, and garlic. Definitely go for that, regardless of what else you get. It is fairly small and it's a great little plate to share. The polenta lasagna was quite good. However, my only complaint was that it was a little burnt on the outside - perhaps a little too much fire? The inside was excellent, but the fact that it was slightly burnt hindered it a little bit for me. read more

I have been a regular customer at BnF for the past couple years, and am rarely dissatisfied with the food. I am lowering my rating because of the decline in the service. When I first starting coming here for lunch, the staff was friendly and casual. At my last visit, I didn't get the servers name, we had to sell ourselves a bottle of wine because she had no suggestions, and each time she checked on us it was abrupt and unfriendly. I was driving to a new duty station and randomly came across this place on my way. My husband and I went in on a busy night. We sat at the bar. The service was great. We had the the champagne and brie soup and the fig and blue cheese pizza. I can't remember all the ingredients but it was delicious. I would love to get back to this amazing spot one day. Thank God for weird accidents! We had a reservation for another restaurant but couldn't get to it because of downed power lines and a road closure. We started looking at other options and settled on Brick and Fire. Even though they were busy and we didn't have a reservation, they went out of their way to accommodate us. They set us up with great wine and service "two doors down" and got us into a table in the restaurant at the first opportunity. It was worth it! The food, the staff, the experience...well, they were all fantastic! Our server made awesome recommendations, and we couldn't be happier or more stuffed! Traveled through Eureka a few weeks ago and found this place on Yelp - it was AWESOME!! Nice cozy and warm atmosphere with the large brick oven in the back. Good beer and wine list. We tried pizzas, baked ziti, polenta lasagna, the grilled caesar salad and the braised greens. Service was excellent, they brought everything we needed and then left us alone! I wish a branch of this bistro would open up in my town, I'd be there every week! read more

Eat at this restaurant right now. It's a cute place in a residential neighborhood. The staff was fantastic--friendly, knowledgeable, and very helpful. The buckwheat/blueberry bread was baked on site that morning and was so delicious. I'm not even a big fan of bread and I ate it all. I ordered the scallops wrapped in cod and I literally had a smile on my face as I ate it. Food preparation of this caliber is an art. There was no way I wasn't going to try their desserts so I ordered the orange creme brulee and was not disappointed. My server was so attentive and did a fantastic job explaining all the ingredients of the various dishes and how they were prepared. He obviously knew his stuff.
