Went with a group visiting from out of town and wanted somewhere nice and cozy inside. The restaurant looked a little busy, most tables were full but the parties were small. Staff overall were great, and our waiter was very professional. The menu looks really good and as the name implies, there's a lot of seafood options for dinner. Someone got the fish and chips which was pricier than other places BUT it came with FOUR pieces instead of the usual three. I did the Snapper Almandine which was so good so amazingly delicious, I would absolutely eat that again. the polenta side tho was probably my favorite of the night, so crispy on the outside and soft and tender inside, flavor was amazing . If they piled high on a dinner plate and served that for 30 I would take it!!! I'll be very curious to try one of the steaks next time and see how it compares with other restaurants in town that I hear recommended often. The only minor issue was trying to get a replacement water glass after we first sat down because of lipstick print on the glass. I hate talking too loud in restaurants so thankfully the hostess noticed us before long. We were passing through Eureka and the hotel that we stayed at recommended this restaurant. We called and made a reservation, which was very easy and walked from our hotel to the restaurant...a few blocks. We were quickly seated and water was brought over and that our server came to take our drink order. They had specialty cocktails, beer, and wine and a full bar. I just wanted a glass of wine, and i did get a glass of wine. However, I would say the choices for by the glass wine was not great. The food however, was excellent! We started with the Dungeness crab cocktail, which was a very nice portion for two. Then we followed with a cup of clam chowder that we shared. We each had a house salad that I thought was delicious. I had vinaigrette on mine and my husband have thousand island on his. He has been on this eternal search for the best thousand island dressing and he swears by this one! We also split tonight, special of Halibut with a white wine, garlic butter sauce, and Shitake mushrooms. It was not only the perfect portion size, but extremely good! We skipped dessert, but moved to the bar for a nightcap where we met a local guy and a few other visitors...it was very fun...everyone was very friendly! The dungeness crab fettuccine was disappointing tbh....$45+ for just the most cheap-tasting sauce with bits of crab. We had dinner here on our one night in Eureka, on our Pacific Northwest Road trip. The food was good. But you are packed in like a can of sardines and that makes it very loud. Not a date location or a place to go if you need to have an intimate conversation. Because it was so busy, our service was a little slow, but that is understandable when the crowds are so overwhelming. Portions are generous. We were traveling, so could not take our leftovers. As soon as we walked in we were greeted by the owner. She asked if we could wait at the bar as she walked us over to a seat and said she will grab us as soon as our table is ready. The man next to me told me that she was the owner it must be busy. He said she was a nice lady. He was a local. We asked him what he would recommend on the menu and he suggested the beer battered shrimp. I'm not a fan of things being deep fried though. When the owner grabbed us and took us to our seat, I noticed on the menu how much food you get when you order an entree. Soup or salad, I got the clam chowder of course, they were out of prime rib so I got the rib eye instead. I was really sad about that choice since I haven't had prime rib in a while. The meal also came with either scampi, beer battered shrimp or calamari. It was so much food which is nice, but the steak was so chewy. I usually love it when I have to fight a bit for my meat like on a rib or something but not my steak. But it was a great restaurant and the seating on both sides of the restaurant were packed. Then we had snapper puttanesca and sea grill fettuccine. It was very well, sauces were on point. They give a very good portion for every meal. We had to get a to go box. Definitely give it a try. My colleagues and I are in Eureka for work. We've now been to this restaurants twice. The first time we went there we ordered appetizers and drinks and then we each ordered fish. After the apps arrived, we were told that they were out of some of the fish we ordered. We decided to leave after appetizers and go somewhere else. First, the apps were very good. The fried calamari was delicious. This is what brought us back for a second try. The second time, we called ahead to see about availability. They were very nice and told us to come over, they greeted us and had a table ready. We got assurances that all the fish was available - although there were no crab legs. No biggie! We ordered the delicious calamari. So good! We ordered the sauteed mushrooms, very tasty. Two had fish and chips and were satisfied. We both had clam chowder which was thick, had lots of clam, was hot, and very good. Ahi tuna steak was very well prepared, tender, and delicious. Oysters were fresh and very good. We didn't order drinks as it was a work night. But if memory serves the drinks were good the first time we were there. In short, we forgave them for running out of fish. We arrived on the night before Valentine's with no reservations, but were treated to excellent service. We were seated quickly and they had a musician playing in the waiting area. When we were seated the waiter (Samuel) arrived quickly. He gave us the specials and we ordered drinks. He then proceeded to let us know the specials and give us recommendations. From start to finish the service was impeccable. Each course came promptly, and was delicious. We ordered the steak and lobster combo to share with the $8 upgrade. The service surprised us because it was much better than typical Humboldt service. The only negative I have is the chef likes mushrooms much more than I do, because they were in everything. The Sea Grill reminds me of the classic Seafood restaurants on Fisherman's Wharf in San Francisco. To me it feels classy and upscale. Had a wonderful dinner with friends. Last night. Even with reservations it took a little time to be seated. Granted they were very full and slammed with guests. Food took a while to get to us but was very good. I had the cioppino with was a little light on fish but had a great spicy flavor. My wife had the swordfish special with polenta. This is a great gem in eureka for a bit of a more upscale meal. The service was great our table never had dirty dishes and drinks stayed filled as well as timing of courses. The main dining room is small but the conversations don't carry and they have a cute bar in the next room also. We are traveling through Eureka & stopped at the Sea Grill for some good coastal fare. It did not disappoint! We were seated promptly, and enjoyed the quaint dining room- not too noisy & there was a nice partition between us the the table next to us. The menu had seafood, steak & chicken options as well as some vegetarian dishes. We ordered the fried calamari as an appetizer- it was the best calamari I've ever eaten! For dinner we both had the special for this evening - beer battered halibut fish tacos served with a mango salsa & a chipotle & cilantro type sauce on it. We also had a cup of chowder with dinner that was more "bowl sized" than cup, and equally delicious. Our server, Samuel, took good care of us, made great recommendations for drinks & even told us of some local live entertainment to go check out after we were done with dinner. The Sea Grill is a welcome throwback; a time capsule where the contents are still intact, not crumbled into dust. I guess it's within or close enough to the Old Town district of Eureka. We visited over the fourth of July, when downtown had three nights of back to back festivals. So, a little bit of the block party vibe leaked into this sanctum, but that's fine. I dig oysters, the local Humboldt bay bivalves were top notch- briny, tender. The chowder, as others have noted, as a bit "out there" in that it includes button mushrooms, but I thought they blended into the overall flavor profile nicely. Three of us went with the fish and chips- rock cod, that apparently isn't actually cod, but whatever- again, I appreciated malt vinegar being placed on the table without a request. The fish was tender and flavorful, the battering most excellent. I should also not there was live entertainment: a classical guitar player, who at one point exclaimed "it's time for a SONG"! and then stood up and belted out some acapella opera aria -and then he slammed his drink in salute to the appreciative audience ;-) Just a great time, wonderful atmosphere, professional service, great food. read more

Had the clam chowder which was very hearty, rich and full of clams. Shown is the halibut plate with rice. This plating reminded me of the way food was plated at a restaurant called Anthony's in the 1970s, especially with the side veggies. Let's start off by saying we've been coming to this establishment for many years and have had the best memories like birthdays and I was proposed to there. We went this last Friday for my birthday. The service was AWFUL! My daughters made a reservation for 6:30 and they were there at 6:30 and the guy was asking what appetizers they wanted as there were putting decorations up, and he kept asking over and over. Even after they said, we'll order once we are done with the setup and the others get here (we were there just outside door, so they could set up). As we were sitting, the waitress started asking for drink orders. I said, could we have a second? She was already irritated! We ordered drinks and asked for a minute to look at the menu. She takes our order and says people will stay seated in their spots correct? It was my birthday and there were three little kids and they were excited to see me! Yes, they moved chairs, but we know when food comes to have them in their seats. She was so annoyed with being there in general! She handed my food to my daughter and she said, for mom. My daughter is mom also, so she said, thank you, the waitress rudely said, it's not for you, it's for her! We asked for bread, we had a group of 9 and they brought enough for a piece each. The waitress said, we'll have to charge you. We said, that's ok. She NEVER came back with it. She didn't have to do any extra for us we all ordered water, besides the little kids and one bar drink. But we didn't ask refills or anything extra. They did cut my cake for me, but of course they grab it and don't tell you there's a charge. The charge is ok, just let people know. She was just so rude and the guy helping her was so pushy! We had two bills one for $167 and one for $250! She proceeds to say oh the tip is added. I was so irritated, because at that point we knew why she was so rude, because she knew she had her tips already. Paying a $38 tip for 4 people, the service should be amazing! It was the WORST experience! Oh and we had 9 people and had 9 chairs, she literally came and took my grandsons because he wasn't sitting in it, so we had to ask for the chair back! Prime rib was so tuff we could not eat it. Owner removed it and charged me for the over cooked zucchini and luke warm rice. I am from San Diego and really looked for a nice restaurant to have Christmas eve dinner for my sister and I as we have not had Christmas together in 30 years. What a disappointment. This weekend we visited Sea Grill for the first time. I was very impressed by the aroma in/outside the restaurant. The smell was very aromatic and we were very excite to try out their menu. The welcoming staff she was very friendly. The restaurant has different seating options for dining in. The bar, fine and standard dining, but we were not asked where we wanted to be seated. They also have a party/event area for reservation. The female restroom was clean and comfortable. There is no dress code. I would say formal casual to formal dressing, depending on your event. We were out on a date so we were formally dressed. The mocktail menu is limited, but you could ask them to make something for you. The complimentary bread and butter were very fresh and taste. We were planning on having two appetizers, two main course and one dessert. We ended up getting half of what we originally planed because our server was not attentive as much to us and had difficult time answering my questions about the menu. We order beer battered prawns and it came with salad and baked potato. The salad is crisp and the vegetables were so fresh and we got it with ranch salad dressing. The baked potato was average. The main course was very delicious and cooked properly. The prawns was fresh, large and seasoned well. The side sauté vegetables were salted and nicely cooked. We also ordered the crème brûlée. I think everyone should start their order with this dessert, that's how good it was! I honestly would not mind just coming here for the crème brûlée. It was made with perfection. Expensive, BUT, my out-of-town family from Marin was paying for it. I had not been there in over 15 years. It was excellent food. The staff was awesome and attentive to your needs. I had sautéed scallops. The margaritas, were good but my homemade margaritas are stronger. I usually never want dessert, but their cheesecake was awesome. My girlfriend and I had our date night here. Our server was friendly but he spoke really quickly and was a bit hard to hear him over the chatter in the restaurant. We were in the mood for steak and seafood. They were out of the ribeye, which was very strange especially for a Friday night, so I settled for the filet mignon (medium rare) with veggie medley and a loaded baked potato. My girlfriend also had the filet mignon (medium rare) with veggies and fries. We started with the calamari, which was far below our expectations. It was a bit soggy and did not taste fresh. It tasted like it had been sitting in the freezer and was then microwaved and brought to the table. Our steaks were both over cooked and closer to a medium well temperature. We were hesitant to even pack our leftovers, but I opted to take the leftover steak home and repurpose it. My baked potato was a sad representation of "loaded" and was also very dry. Overall, sure, maybe I'd give Sea Grill another opportunity but it is definitely not at the top of my list and I would've given it a 2.5 for food but our server was kind. read more

There is no part of the ambiance that suggests "fine dining" (except the price point). The veggies were steamed and unseasoned. The ribeye was BARELY seasoned and was ultimately rather tough/chewy despite requesting a medium rare cook. The manager was hardly assisting her overloaded servers. The drinks were watered down. The food came out in about 30 min, but our server forgot to put in our order which delayed it. The chowder was bland enough I'd eat that if I was sick (maybe). I will never ever go back. Go to tavern 1888, ambiance, service, and quality of food there is phenomenal (both on its own and certainly compared to this abysmal dining experience). Yuck Sea Grill!!!
