Brickhaus rocks!! I have gotten lunch there twice, once take-out, and another time dine-in. Their iced tea is fab: always freshly brewed, even in the dead of winter. I've gotten their "take two combo," in which you can choose among half a sandwich, salad, or cup of soup, plus you get a choice of hummus and carrots or homemade potato chips. AND IT'S UNDER $9. I can eat, and this is a ton of food. And it's good. Their Greek salad is loaded up with feta, olives, and fresh veggies. I've gotten the Red Hot panini sammie both times, with turkey, bacon, pepper jack, jalapeño, spinach, and a spiced mayo of some kind...plus chips!! Plus an iced tea. They can get busy at lunch, but if you call ahead, they are super nice about taking an order to go...and then you could always decide to eat there. Jefferson isn't traditionally known for its fresh food joints. In a city of processed and fried goodness this place really stands out and would hold it's own against some Madison favorites. Fresh, simple ingredients are where it's at! Their baked goods are delectable and they have super yummy coffee. I'm in love with their caprese panini. Crispy bread, spinach, fresh mozzarella, tomatoes, and basil pesto makes this a winner in my book. The cheese is perfectly melted and the panini itself is huge! It's basically two sandwiches. It's good that it's huge because you will eat it all! And then you devour their house made chips. If chips aren't your thing they also offer carrots and hummus. Their place is tiny and I suspect their kitchen is even smaller. This is not a place to grab something quick. Plan on savoring a cup of coffee or two while waiting for your lunch. They are really great about take out orders and are happy to do so. If you are in a rush, call ahead and have it ready when you arrive. You can always take your to-go containers to a cozy booth and enjoy there. This place is a little gem in Jefferson! read more

I had driven past this place for two years thinking it was a breakfast sandwich/coffee house...,what a mistake! They have the best soup and sandwiches around! I think they have the best Rueben sandwich I've ever eaten - straight out of New York with a right sizing midwestern nod that eliminates sloppiness ..... the pork and green chili verde soup is very subtle and delicious as well - my favorites!!! have gone there on a few occasions and haven't been disappointed. Breakfast sandwiches are excellent, not just eggs between bread. Tastefully seasoned and choices of fresh veggies. Bakery selection is excellent too. Wonderful muffins. A variety of drinks at a decent price. Only 1/2 a block off main street, but very visible with their blue shutters on a creamery brick building. Interior is comfortable. Booths, tables, and comfortable casual chairs make it a great place to relax with friends and family. The courtyard is beautiful! I've been to the Brickhaus for coffee and breakfast sandwiches in the past when I'm in Jefferson. Today was the first time I stopped for lunch. We had the Italiano and a Reuben. Disappointed that they use processed meats so the sandwiches were mediocre. Service is a la Carte. You order and they bring to your table. We had to clean the table off because it was very dirty. You have to clean up the trays and throw away your refuse. The seating area was very dirty and floor dirty as well when a worker came to the seating area she only moved tables after a large party left. She walked away without cleaning. Makes me wonder about kitchen cleanliness. A restaurant should present a clean appearance. I felt like I worked there having to clean up after previous customers left messy table. I won't be going out of my way to stop there again. By the way they have a tip jar. For what reason.... read more

Had a work meeting here. I ordered a London Fog and the Jalapeno Popper Panini. Big fan of both! I've never put cream cheese with scrambled eggs before, but you can bet I am now. It was pretty spicy with a lot of cut-up jalepeno pieces in it, but the cream cheese helped balance it out a bit. I had the half sandwich, but if I'm ever back, I'll get the full. Awesome food and great service! I'm from out of town and had no idea what I was getting myself into... I'm picky so it can be tricky to find good coffee and food. The server I had was very sweet, and answered all of the (many) questions I had before placing my order. She was happy to help me select a dish, and coffee. I felt welcomed, and was actually super satisfied with the food. I wish I knew her name to compliment her... she had brown hair and glasses! Has it really been two years since I wrote a review? Why yes, yes it has. Not much has changed, though. Same tasty coffee, coffee specialty drinks from proficient baristas if desired. Same tasty food; mostly sandwiches, salads, soup, breakfast items, cookies and muffins. Customers can sit at the coffee bar, a table or booth in the front, or in a table or booth in the large-for-a-coffee-place attached, also. It is quiet enough to catch up on work, not so quiet that I fall asleep, which is why I am here instead of home. There are a lot of regulars, most of which are friendly. I have NOT seen much turnover in barista staff, or kitchen- and this makes me happy. Or, I am happy because they seem to always be SMILING- who can help but smile back? There is a small tip jar on the counter. There isn't the large amount of customers here, as it the huge coffee houses, so tip well. Unless you have spent the last 20 years under a rock, a standard tip is 18 -20 percent for a meal. Just like a bar, tip the customary buck-a-beverage (double check me on google if you don't believe me, ya cheapskate). There is a huge board where you can buy a cup of coffee for somebody else, and it is usually filled or near filled. I keep forgetting to add my complimentary cup up there to "person who wears scrubs" (could be someone who cares for people, their teeth, or their pets... I dunno). If I see it there, though, thank you for the nice coffee. Although Jefferson does NOT have a visible homeless community (the police ask them to move along elsewhere, unfortunately- likely because residents here have complained- where are they supposed to go?), there are many who cannot afford a wonderful luxury like coffee. Perhaps this will be the first in the area to have "suspended coffee", like in Naples, Italy, and other places in Europe and the US. Customers can buy an extra coffee, for those less fortunate- a small act of kindness- and the baristas can give them as they see fit. To a person who reaches in the pot for the "coffee shop coin" (similar to the cardboard coins at bars, when someone buys you a drink for later), the empty cup placed in the window, or the like. While I have been blessed enough to have never been without a roof over my head, there are times- when a junior member of the military, while in school, when as a young parent being hit with an unanticipated auto or medical bill that broke the bank), where being able to pick up a coffee would have made my week. Something to think about, yes? Why yes, this IS locally owned, and they source much of their products locally. Of COURSE you can stop in last minute and get a gift item, especially if it is for me. Order at the counter, and the food is brought to you, relatively quickly. Around meal time, be patient, as everything is made FRESH and to order. Great for people with children. Menu is yummy, and no disgusting chicken nuggets (just say no to food that isn't recognizable). Lovely for seniors, and many do frequent the place. Sure, it is fine for groups, and we had scout meetings there when we were locked out of our usual location. I have seen other groups of 8 there, also. Sure, they have a beautiful patio out back, some with umbrellas, for nice days! Which is NOT today, in mid February. There is usually a nice bowl full of water, for customers who bring in their doggo, which I wish I would see more of here in Wisconsin. Gluten free options, if you need them. This place is a gem in small town Jefferson. They have flavorful sandwiches that are price amazingly for the quality you get. It does take a bit longer for your panini to get made so we call our orders in ahead of time. I don't drink coffee or tea so can't speak to that. read more

This place is one of the best cafés in Wisconsin! Definitely worth the trip off of 94. It's probably almost 10 minutes off your route from exit 267, but the food is very delicious, the menu interesting and the coffee excellent. It's just a sweet café was really excellent whole food. A total gem. I had a Mexican egg burrito that was wrapped in pastry and so perfect. I'm not sure of their hours, but they're not open on Sunday and I think they close at three -- so confirm they're open and enjoy an excellent café experience. read more

We were driving from Milwaukee to Madison and yelped a local lunch establishment and bingo, this place appeared. Drove 15 minutes off the beaten track and back in time to Jefferson; quaint and blue collaresque. This local joint served delicious panini, soups and salads all very homemade with fresh ingredients. This place is awesome. Great food. Good music playing. Nice wooden booths. Tasty tea. Best part is definitely the food. I had half of a grilled cheese and half of a greek salad. They were reasonably priced and appropriately sized portions. The grilled cheese is not your ordinary grilled cheese: it has pesto, feta, tomato, and bacon on it. The sides were awesome (I would recommend the hummus). Overall, this place is a five star, I only rated it four because I've visited just once, so... I will definitely be back, though. read more
