Great selection, great staff and if you really look you'll find a deal or two. And if you can't find a deal, check out the basement store. Totally separate entrance around the side and down the shabby stairs. They do nothing to enhance the ambiance down there, but if you take the time to sort through what they have you could find that surprise item that you can't find anywhere else for half the price or even less. But back upstairs, they have everything from vacation wear to formal wear. From every season, to outdoor sports, to accessories. If you like that New England look the MA Islands are so famous for, this is where you can find it. Most often when we come here we shop in both stores. Sometimes we climb back and forth trying to decide if we like the deal downstairs more than the full priced item upstairs. You should try it when in Vineyard Haven. This is a store that sells clothes that are more functional than fashionable (jeans, fleece, shoes, nantucket reds, suspenders, yawn...). The prices are kind of expensive. I prefer the toy store upstairs for their selection of joke toys (fake barf, hand buzzers, disappearing ink). Remember when they used to sell lawn darts? That was awesome. The best time to swing into Brickman's is when they are having one of their periodical sale on shoes. Nice shoe sales. But other than that, we islanders only go in here when we can't get off island to the delights of the Cape Cod Mall in Hyannis or even the shopping mecca of downtown Falmouth. It seems so against our thrifty New England upbringing to fork over $14 for a pair of socks, knowing one will quickly succumb to the sock eating drier in the laundry room. Island prices are on full display here at Brickman's where you pay plenty for basic necessities like belts, mittens, bathing suits, boots and winter coats. They even have toys. And underwear. Brickman's is very clean and well-organized, located right in downtown VH and open year round. It really is an asset to the island, albeit a pricey one. The styles are traditional. You won't find much stylish runway fashion here. You will find pink pants, Topsiders and tweed skirts. I've dropped many a hard earned dollar here at Brickman's but it's usually when I have been remiss in shopping ahead of time during a change of seasons. Or when they have those shoe sales. Then I am a Brickman's junkie. I do give them a lot credit for staying open year round and for surviving the confusing Vineyard Haven retail scene for so long. The Brinkman' outlet in the basement is great. You can get a good price on a pair of sneakers for around $30.

I have been coming to Martha's Vineyard since 1969. Brickman's has been around since 1913. And somehow in all that time they haven't learned how to treat their customer. It's all about the parking lot. Parking in Vineyard haven is competitive I admit. I came in to buy sports equipment and asked the young man if I could grab a cup of coffee? He demurred to an older man who I assumed was his dad and he gave me lecture about the abuse of his parking lot. Really? So I left with my purchase. I really wanted to explain how insulting he had been but I couldn't do it in from of his son. So I left. I was pulling out. And there he was leaving. So he said "I was nodding yes when I was saying no" and some other bull. Who really cares it's just one in a number of poor experiences at that store. I would patronize any other store before I go back. Who needs attitude from a sporting goods salesman. read more
