I was fortunate to discover Madera Villa, a small, welcoming facility with around 17 rooms, each furnished and complete with its own bathroom. The staff there provided her with constant, loving care and attention until she peacefully passed away from her illness. I have carried gratitude for that experience ever since. Fast forward 15 years to March of 2025. My wife of 34 years was now struggling with dementia, mobility issues, and recovering from a broken arm after a fall. Once again, I reached a point where I could no longer meet her growing care needs on my own. Living about 30 miles south of Madera Villa, I searched for a nearby facility but found none that gave me a good feeling. Then I called Madera Villa--and to my delight, I was greeted by Allan Tuan, the facility administrator, and his wonderful assistant, Sarah. Both of them had been there when my mother was a resident fifteen years earlier. When I walked through those doors again after all those years, it felt less like entering a care facility and more like returning to a place of comfort and trust. Seeing Allan and Sarah still there filled me with a deep sense of reassurance. It reminded me that some places truly hold on to what matters--people who care for others not because it's their job but because it's who they are. Even in her condition, my wife recognized Allan and Sarah from visits long ago and connected with them instantly. Their compassion, attentiveness, and genuine kindness made her feel safe and loved. During her stay, she became friends not only with the entire staff but also with several residents. I started calling Sarah the "sweetheart lady of Madera Villa," and the title fits her perfectly. This review is from Jan. 2023…read more I write it - long overdue - for you to make sure there's been a change in management and underlying grossly negligent systemic conditions threatening patient safety since then. It was an incredibly dangerous stay. CA should shut the place down if those conditions persist. 1. Broken blood pressure machines. My parent needed his B/P checked several times a day, to adjust his medications. No one told me the blood pressure machine was broken. It was a traveling nurse who informed me to bring one in that actually works. 2. Failure to administer oxygen My parent was short of breath and needed oxygen one night and into the next day. He pleaded for oxygen. A traveling nurse told me all they had to do was text the doctor for oxygen tanks in his room - but no one did that. Stanford hospital finally intervened, getting him in-room oxygen tanks. But he never should've suffered like that. 3. Threatened discharges The Terraces threatened to discharge my parent for "refusing" to do PT. He never refused - he wanted to do PT! The PT notes clearly stated it was "too dangerous" for him to do the PT. The PTs had to help us fight the discharge. 4. Dairy given to lactose intolerant They regularly gave him food full of dairy, when he was marked as lactose intolerant. This made him very sick each time, increased his weakness and worsened his underlying health conditions. 5. Warehoused him For 2 weeks, no one informed the family of his medical condition preventing PT. Just left him lying in bed. After 2 weeks, a doctor said he'd adjust his medications. After another week, the doctor offered to increase the medications because he wasn't improving. But he wasn't improving because he'd never received the first dose! In increasing his medication, the doctor never checked whether he actually received the first dose level. Totally dangerous. Again - a traveling nurse was the one who checked. 4 weeks later, he started receiving the medication and could start the PT program. 6. Nurses didn't follow doctor orders Because nurses weren't following the doctor's orders, I taped handwritten signs to the wall over his bed, stating the doctor's orders in large print. My parent had to repeatedly ask the nurses to read my posted signs. In conclusion, if nothing is changed since 1/23, The Terraces should be shut down. It should be reopened ONLY under new management and AFTER it fixes the underlying systemic problems inflicting gross negligence in medical care on its elderly fragile patient population.

We spent some happy days with my beloved MIL there. I moved MIL from a country club like larger assisted care Memory Care where she fell on her face and broke her nose within 2 hours of my leaving. It was just too big for her. Board and Care is much more personal with a better ratio of 2:6 ratio of caregiving. My MIL came in a wheelchair and within a month was back to walking with a walker then cane! She perked up being around other seniors and even made a new best friend. The rooms are spacious, and the backyard has a little walking path with flowering plants and fruit trees. Residents and the house and yard are well cared for, and the staff cooks meals from scratch. The staff is professional, kind, and patient. I am thankful there was an opening when my MIL needed it.

At times, it feels as though they are trying to hide what is really going on instead of being transparent with the family. This facility has gone seriously downhill, and I feel terrible for anyone who has to depend on it for their recovery. The physical therapy has been inconsistent and, in my opinion, inadequate. My mother walked into this facility and is leaving in a wheelchair, no longer able to walk. That is extremely concerning and heartbreaking for our family. Families should be able to trust that their loved ones are receiving consistent, appropriate care and rehabilitation. Unfortunately, that has not been our experience here.

After my mom passed away, my dad moved to California to be close to our family. When he moved into…read moreRedwood Villa, it was exactly the right 'fit' for him. The atmosphere is warm and inviting. The property is well maintained. Redwood Villa is family-owned and run, and that caring atmosphere is prevalent throughout. My dad, who was fairly independent, had several medical emergencies, and staff was extremely accommodating as well as always keeping an eye out for him. We needed some modifications to his apartment, such as a cut-out in the tub so he could step in easily after hip surgery, and it was no problem. Staff was always extremely pleasant; there was never a 'honeymoon' period where it seems great and then diminishes over time...it was always great. We enjoyed the events held during the year such as the Christmas party, New Years party, Mothers Day dinner, etc. It's not a skilled nursing facility, and that was perfect for our needs. Residents do have assistants who come in to help with their various needs, but that's not provided directly through Redwood Villa. Their rates are extremely reasonable, and I can't recommend them highly enough.
