I was fortunate to discover Madera Villa, a small, welcoming facility with around 17 rooms, each furnished and complete with its own bathroom. The staff there provided her with constant, loving care and attention until she peacefully passed away from her illness. I have carried gratitude for that experience ever since. Fast forward 15 years to March of 2025. My wife of 34 years was now struggling with dementia, mobility issues, and recovering from a broken arm after a fall. Once again, I reached a point where I could no longer meet her growing care needs on my own. Living about 30 miles south of Madera Villa, I searched for a nearby facility but found none that gave me a good feeling. Then I called Madera Villa--and to my delight, I was greeted by Allan Tuan, the facility administrator, and his wonderful assistant, Sarah. Both of them had been there when my mother was a resident fifteen years earlier. When I walked through those doors again after all those years, it felt less like entering a care facility and more like returning to a place of comfort and trust. Seeing Allan and Sarah still there filled me with a deep sense of reassurance. Even in her condition, my wife recognized Allan and Sarah from visits long ago and connected with them instantly. Their compassion, attentiveness, and genuine kindness made her feel safe and loved. During her stay, she became friends not only with the entire staff but also with several residents. I started calling Sarah the "sweetheart lady of Madera Villa," and the title fits her perfectly. My grandmother received a diagnosis of stage 4 lung and liver cancer in Nov 2022 and she put me in charge of finding a care facility. She had quite a few requirements, one being she wanted to be in a small but not too small facility. I spoke to over 15 facilities and toured multiple one and was finding it difficult to find a facility that was the right size with caring and compassionate staff and involved owner. I felt like I was looking for a needle in a haystack. I was referred to Alan and set up a time to visit his facility. Alan is such a warm and welcoming owner. His staff welcomed us into his facility. The facility layout was perfect. It's all one floor and the rooms have private 1/2 baths for a affordable price (all elder care is sooo expensive in the Bay Area.) The facility is extremely clean. Alan was very accommodating and ensure her room was set. Unfortunately my grandma wasn't in Alan's care for very long but for the short time she was Alan was a angel and took wonderful care of her! Our family placed our uncle in Madera Villa after several falls resulting in two major surgeries, as well as having dementia. Our uncle is a very quiet person and was used to living alone. We were finding that a lot of the assisted living facilities while bright and flashy with gourmet cooking , they did not feel like a home. Too much stimulation and busyness. When we first had our uncle transferred to Madera Villa, he was failing to thrive and had lost a dangerous amount of weight. However, over time, Alan and his staff nurtured him back to health with their individualized compassionate care in a home like setting. All their delicious home cooked meals are cooked on site too. Madera Villa made it possible for me to spend quality time with my mom. The loving staff tirelessly took care of my mom's every need, from starting with 3 meals a day (including preparing her renal diet separately), grooming, toileting, to picking up prescriptions and working with home care nurses/physical therapists. The administrator, Alan, is especially compassionate and knowledgeable, on top of that, he always made my mom laugh with his great sense of humor. The regularly held parties and concerts were always personal and sweet. Madera Villa was truly an extension of me and my home for my mom. I visited her daily with the kids for walks, chitchats, snacks, and enjoyed quality time, without ever having to worry about the laborious basic necessities. This was a special place for my mom and I. I only wished we could have had more time. My mom was so supported and loved there. I highly recommend a tour of this facility to meet the residents and staff if your loved one is ready for an assisted living arrangement. I researched multiple facilities in the area, including visits and going onto the California Department of Social Services website to view inspection data, before making the decision of entrusting my mom with Madera Villa. Madera Villa Residential Care is a top notch memory care facility where my mother stayed during the last 9 months of her life. The owner is Alan Tuan and his right-hand care giver is Sara. Alan provided outstanding care to my mom. Both Sara and Alan were very kind to my mother. Alan took my mom to her medical appointments and provided her with her favorite foods. Sara initiated wonderful activities for my mom and all of the residents. I visited a lot during the weeks and my mom's room was always immaculate. The entire staff was extremely attentive and showed enormous care toward my mom. I highly recommend Madera Villa Residential Care for anyone who can no longer live independently. We first found this small facility in June 2018 when we were looking for a Board and Care for my 95-year-old mother-in-law following two leg breaks last spring. At the time she was an extreme fall risk. And we were looking for a place to provide her a safe living experience. And fact, we were preparing our home for her and trying to figure out how we could accommodate her needs in our 1960 home with small bathrooms and narrow doorways. It soon became apparent we could not take care of her needs in our house, and to be honest, we didn't trust the places we had visited, considering the second time Marian broke her leg, she was in an assisted living facility where the staff was supposed to be at your side within a few minutes of being called. Well that didn't work out, and the memory units we visited afterwards were not acceptable for so many reasons. My wife had previously worked with a nice lady, Keri Landrum, that helps families with the very issues we were dealing with. In communicating mother's increasing needs and risks, Keri suggested we visit Madera Villa. At the Villa we were introduced to the owner, Alan Tuan, and his staff. The Villa appears a little dated. But the service is anything but. They are the most caring people I have ever had the pleasure of meeting. There are no less than 4 or 5 during the day providing assistance for no more than 15 residents. At night, the staff is one or two. On mother's first nights, Alan was also on hand all night. He later told us that he does this for all new residents to gain an understanding of the resident's needs. In mother's case, Alan implemented fall risk alarms and other methods to help her adjust to her new home, including training her to call for help. The bed alarms and call buttons provided staff notification anytime she started to get out of bed or her recliner. Today, she is doing well, and no longer needs the alarms as she uses her call button and is much stronger than she had been as the staff provides her PT in the commons room with her housemates and private escorted walks up and down the hallway. Fast forward to the mid-Feb 2019 storms...My own 84-year-old mother has continued to live in her mountain home near Lake Tahoe with 24-hour, 7 days a week in home aid. With over 3 feet of new snow, no utilities a burned-out generator and no water, I made the decision to move her out of her home of 40 years. Calling Alan and explaining the situation, he told me to bring her down, a room would be ready. I did so in between storms, arriving at Madera Villa after a four-hour drive in wind and pounding rain. And upon our arrival, Alan was true to his word. Within 10 minutes Mom was on a first name basis with the staff. In the evening, after I had left the Villa, Alan called me and gave Mom the phone to provide her comfort on her first night. The following morning Alan provided me an update on her first night's experience. This was also the first time he had opportunity to observe her physical limitations. Please understand for my mother-in-law, Alan visited her and assessed her needs while she was still in rehab with her second broken leg. In my mother's case, Alan never had the opportunity to do so. But he felt he knew enough from our discussions to make a well-informed decision. This was in addition to the 602-form completed during my mother's last hospitalization. Mom also told me how helpful the staff was on her first night and morning. Alan and I discussed medications and he recommended I get a local doctor now, even though I was switching her to Kaiser in about 5 weeks. Alan suggested some doctors at a nearby Sutter Health Facility, which I visited that afternoon and booked an appointment with. In summary, Alan helped us twice. Once for my mother-in-law and again with my mother some seven months later. Both are doing well living under the same roof with excellent care from a responsive staff. The stress of doctor's appointments has been eliminated for us and them, as Alan drives them to their doctor's appointments in his wheelchair accessible van. I rarely write Yelp reviews but I absolutely want others to know about this incredible board and care facility. If the need ever arises for a family member or friend to move to an assisted living setting, I hope he/she is lucky enough to find a spot at Madera Villa. My father moved there from an independent living facility where he had been for the previous 5 1/2 years. After a sudden illness and hospitalization, he could no longer live on his own with just my help a few hours each day. It was not easy for me to even consider relinquishing the care of my father to strangers. Who could care for him the way a daughter who knew him so well and who loved him so much? As it turned out Madera Villa could. While the physical features of Madera Villa are very good, what really stands out are the people. Alan, the administrator, is incredibly kind, competent, and dedicated. He has been in the industry for years and still shows so much passion for what he does. He not only knew how to support my dad, he knew how to support me. Alan communicated with me whenever indicated in the most timely way. He also treats the caregiving staff with so much respect and kindness. As a result, some of his staff have been with him for many years. I recall a few times, my dad had a problem that was going to keep his caregivers up all night helping him. Rather than place that burden on his caregivers, he stayed the night near my dad available to help my dad in whatever way was needed. My dad was very happy at Madera Villa. He was treated with dignity and love. Whenever the caregivers would walk past him, they would pause, connect with his eyes, and say "hello Norman", often adding "I love you". He would smile and tell them he loved them, too. The caregivers gave my dad a shower each morning. He never had to wait for someone to take him to the bathroom. If he was hungry, even if it wasn't meal time, they would give him a snack. They knew what he liked and made sure they had that available. My dad also enjoyed the activity director, Sarah, who did daily exercises, played music on her guitar and accordion, and helped him win chocolate during their bingo games. The physical layout at Madera was also very good. They have 15 rooms, each private and with its own bathroom. The rooms are very homelike - the book shelves, dressers, recliner chair, decor, and printed bed sheets all felt like home. There is a common area, a kitchen and dining area, and even a space outdoors with outdoor furniture for residents to sit with family/friends. The neighborhood is peaceful and parking convenient. A friend who knew my dad well from his independent living residence visited him a month after he'd moved in to the Board and Care. She said it was the best and happiest she had seen him for months. She had said when I hadn't been with him, he had looked so lonely and sad, and only seemed really happy when I was with him, which left 20 hours a day alone. If I had known how great the Madera Villa Board and Care was, I would definitely have wanted him to move there sooner. My father recently passed away. The support he received until the end was superb. It was such a comfort to me and my siblings that my father was loved and cared for with so much skill until his final breath. read more

Alan picks up monthly medications, drives mom in his wheelchair equipped van to the dentist or doctor appointments. Alan will pick up and drop off at adult day care. Alan provides 1:1 attention to new residents. The staff; Charleen, Mary, Wendy, and Sarah are warm and welcoming. Mom required 1:1 attention 24/7, especially at night. Wendy was mom's buddy and could always be found within arms length of mom. Wendy would sleep beside mom's bed and make sure she was safe. Charleen made delicious meals. Mary always present to add a second helping hand. Sarah the activities director sang, played guitar or the accordion. Bingo and card games were a plenty. I never felt ignored or had to track someone down. The girls would say hello every visit. Stop and recognize all residents with a smile, asking "how are you?" and "I love you." Mom's face would light up and smile "I love you too!" Mom passed away peacefully, feeling loved, safe, and with dignity. Thank you Madera Villa! I recently gained (sometimes painfully) lots of experience taking care of my husband's older brother. He had experienced several strokes within a short period and spent 2-3 months in a distant Rehabilitation Center. We felt sorry for him and invited him to live with us.
