This place is one of the nearest restaurants to my apartment and I sometimes come here if I am way too lazy to cook a hot breakfast. It is only open until 4:00 PM, mainly because this is more of a breakfast and lunch diner. The lady was kind of nice to me, so the service was good. For $2.50, you can get an egg and cheese sandwich either in an English muffin or regular bread. I had mine with regular bread, and it was okay, nothing really special. The next time I came, I decided to order a breakfast combo. I ordered the #5, which consists of eggs cooked any style you like, one pancake, one french toast, home fries, and any breakfast meat (sausage, bacon or ham). I ordered my eggs scrambled, with sausage, and requested blueberries in my pancake, since I like blueberry pancakes. The entree comes with regular coffee. The coffee was just average, even with cream and sugar. The egg portions were small, it seems that they only used one egg. The eggs were tasty, had almost of an homemade taste. The home fries were okay, they have a soft texture when I ate them. The french toast was seasoned with powdered sugar, making it sweeter, and it was pretty good, especially with the syrup. The pancakes were tasty, especially with a little syrup. The blueberries tasted a little like actual blueberries taken from an actual market stand and put into the pancake batter. The sausages had a really greasy taste, and were not really great. The price for the #5 is $7.50, but I had to pay $.60 extra just for having blueberries in the pancake, making the total to be $8.10. However, this dish should be more than enough to get your stomach really full. After eating, I was fully alert, and ready to take on the day. One observation that I found is that the staff uses regular products that I believe you can get from any supermarket. Three particular examples were the orange juice (saw one of the employees use a generic brand in a gallon jug while pouring it to someone), the cream, and the milk (all Hood products). Overall, this is not a bad choice to get a good breakfast, but like I said earlier, I would probably come back here again if I am way too lazy to make a hot breakfast. OK, I love this place. It is a straightforward diner. What you see is what you get. It's CHEAP for the amount of food, and the quality is good enough that I can't complain (too much). If you show up at 10 or 11 a.m., you'll be waiting a bit. Go early and it's so peaceful. The place is open and fairly clean, a little noisy depending on how many people are there. Window seats are best. The potatoes that come with practically every plate are okay (ask them to cook them extra, and sometimes they remember) and the toast comes with completely tasteless butter. But they have plenty of sauces and jams and whatever to fill that void. Coffee is standard diner coffee. Love it. The omelettes are very customizable, and their grilled muffins are great. read more

Easily the best breakfast in Brighton. The staff is always friendly and prompt, and I've never waited longer than 10 minutes for the (delicious) food. Not only is it delicious, it's also super cheap. My boyfriend and I stop here at least a couple times a month and have never been disappointed. It can get a little busy on a Saturday morning/afternoon due to all of the college kids, but you'll never have to wait more than 5 minutes for a table. It's a local diner that caters to everyone (mainly college students on a tight budget - guilty). Their food is quick and delicious. For less than $10, you can fill yourself up until dinner. They offer a breakfast special called The Big Five. 1 pancake, 1 piece of french toast, 1 egg, 1 choice of meat, 1 order of home fries (order them well done; trust me). $6.95. That's all. On top of that, they have all of your typical breakfast offerings, fresh pastries, and some lunch items. Don't be surprised if you walk in on an early Saturday morning and see people eating buffalo chicken tenders. They've developed a cult following for good reason. It's also worth mentioning that their coffee is always hot and fresh. I don't know what they do, but I could drink it by the gallon. Pair that with one or two of their $.85 donuts and you have a breakfast for less than $5. I will never stop coming here. read more

When I asked that I also paid for fruits and want the pancake on the plate - they just moved it onto the plate and brought some jelly instead of fresh strawberries I asked to top it with. My boyfriend and I like to have Sunday brunch at this cafe. The French toast is delicious and their home fries are my guilty pleasure! Only complaint I have is the service. No one acknowledges you when you walk in. We have to try to flag down a server to let them know we would like to be put in queue to be seated. There is always a long wait and there is no place to stand inside and wait where you won't be in the way of customers trying to exit the restaurant. I've had to speak up a couple of times when someone that came in after us was being seated before us...they don't even pay attention to that. The waitresses offer poor customer service, never look happy and are a bit unkempt. But if service isn't your top priority and you're looking for a place to have a tasty breakfast, this is your place! read more

The iced coffee should win an award. Dunks and Starbucks dream about making iced coffee this good. I think this could be described as a "glowing" review, but I will say that one time, and only one time, we waited for 15 minutes before the waitress paid attention to us. Since I moved to Allston in 1999, I've watched my standards for food, dry cleaning, apartments, dates-- pretty much everything--gradually, and now sharply, decline. God help me if I ever give that dirty roast beef joint on the corner of Harvard and Brighton Avenues a five-star review, extolling the subtle but flavorful blend of grease, salt, and unwashed hands. Sadly, I feel that day coming. Brighton Cafe is a place to go for a Sunday afternoon breakfast when you don't want to be home, don't want to go far, every place else has stopped serving breakfast and you really want pancakes and coffee. The food is mediocre but the prices are reasonable so I guess you get what you pay for. The service is OK (I always have a book) and my fellow diners are a mix of students and locals. This afternoon, I wasn't too happy to see a guy sleeping at a table in the back--I think he might have worked there. Even for a greasy spoon, I expect a baseline level of professionalism. Brighton Cafe looks like a family business and college for the kiddies doesn't come cheap. Favorites include the Greek omelet with extra feta and the french toast. They reason they get five stars is because of the PHENOMENAL price/performance ratio this place has. You get what is an objectively good quality of product and service at a price point that makes you feel like you should be washing a dish or two after your meal or at least bussing your own table. Great b-fast place. Relatively cheap, fast service, delivers the basics, and good good. No frills here, but thats what great breakfast places are all about. People actually show up in their PJs - awesome. Only bad thing is the parking - ugh it takes forever to find a spot. Everything around it is basically res-only. This was always my go-to place for a nice flavored ice coffee before heading to catch the Green Line. Their coffee is always really tasty, and fairly priced. Considering this is one of the best priced breakfast/brunch spots I've found in the city, you wouldn't expect the best quality, but that isn't the case. This is a very basic diner, not a cafe. It's inexpensive and right by the Washington Street T stop on the green line so perfect if you want to head downtown afterwards. Whenever I'm in Brighton I normally stop here for a quick coffee and croissant and then head into Boston by the green line. You could probably make a more culinary inspired meal in your own kitchen but I'm a fan of the unbeatable prices and the food also comes out quick. I have lived less than one block away from this place for over a year, and Sunday was the first time we ventured inside. Now that has to say something about it. The place is fine. Serviceable. It's bright inside, and chilly every time the door opens. The entire place seems to be run by an Asian family. They could be a little friendlier. My BF and I spent our entire breakfast talking about small changes they could make so they have a line out the door on Saturdays and Sundays like the Breakfast Club in Allston. Maybe some music, a paint job, some more original breakfast offerings. I felt like if I ordered an omlette, it would have nacho cheese in it. The food was fine. The homefries had a tabasco-y flavor to them that was actually kind of nice. My egg sandwich tasted like one I would have made, except the bacon was even more delicious. That's what made this place stand out - the bacon. I wonder if you could go in and just order a few slices. There's one of those auto-espresso machine thingies that makes a passable latte. Anyway. This diner-esque brunch place is at the intersection of Washington St. and Comm Ave., right where the T stop is. I live right down Washington Street and would pick up a breakfast sandwich and an iced coffee on my way to the T. The owners seem to be a friendly Vietnamese family who are efficient in their order-taking. I've been there a few times now, and they seem to remember what the regulars always order. I've only had breakfast sandwiches (ham/sausage, egg, and cheese on English muffins), so I can't speak much more than that. However, those sandwiches are absolutely delicious! Freshly prepared (which might take just a teeny bit longer than I'd like - I usually see two inbound trains pass by before my sandwich is ready), the egg is a wholesome well-done, instead of the powdered eggs that other cafes would sometime offer (Starbucks jumped to mind). But of course, this is a full-service restaurant, so the expectations should be as such. The iced coffee is absolutely delicious. I've always ordered with half amount of sugar with cream, which is not too sweet and just the right amount of caffeine for 7am in the morning. I saw in the reviews for Mirror Cafe on Chestnut Hill Ave. and Washington St. that it is owned by the same owners as Brighton Cafe - which would explain the same efficiency and deliciousness. The price is really fair as well ($4+ for breakfast sandwich with small iced coffee; $9+ for a combination breakfast with medium iced coffee). Simply put, Brighton Cafe is great. Its just what you would expect from looking at it. The place is pretty plain, and there are definitely no frills on the decor. But thats okay, because you know what youre getting into when you go in...a greasy spoon diner, that serves a decent breakfast, and a price that cant be beat. A friend and I visited for an early breakfast while doing laundry across the street, and were able to eat our fill for under 15 bucks. I havent been for anything besides an early breakfast/hangover cure, and it fits the bill. The service is a little slow, but its all function and when youre hungover, sitting in a quiet restaurant and can eat a bunch of eggs and homefries for under 5 bucks, what else can you ask for? I could make a better BLT than that with only ingredients that you can find at CVS. When I removed the crappy tomato and the one string of lettuce, I was left with only wonder bread and bacon, which did not constitute an actual sandwich. I will acknowledge that this location could be convenient for some people. It was this convenience that lured me into this place in the first place. So if you're just a little too hung over or you just want to eat your breakfast in front of the TV for Saturday morning cartoons, you can pop in and get an order of pancakes or waffles or whatever to go and enjoy wherever! Being a coffee addict, my favorite thing from the cafe is their ice coffee. Because there's a serious lack of Dunkin' Donuts around this area, Brighton Cafe is a great alternative, though sometimes their coffee can be a little too creamy.
