I love this place and the Back Bay location is special. The atmosphere is old school diner meets vibrant colorful food haven. The staff at every location are friendly (shocking...I know) but these Back Bay servers don't mess around. They get you in fed and out all without ever feeling rushed. TL;DR: Smelled like dirty water, sat us at a dirty table, food was not impressive, drinks were watered down with odd flavors, honestly don't know why there were so many people in there. Won't go back. Wish I had pictures, sorry. I wasn't thinking about a review. After a 15/20 minute wait, in an effort to seat us quickly, they sat us at a table that was wet, with water, and sticky from what was presumably the last table's syrup. There were 2 open, used, nips of syrup on the table that they hadn't seen or bothering to pick up. The ambiance/decor was very confusing, a lot of colors and patterns. It wasn't quirky (I've been to quirky done well), it was bordering on scatterbrained? I joked that the place was meant to be visually confusing so that you wouldn't see the lack of cleanliness. We asked for napkins to wipe our table and we were given napkins to clean it ourselves. I mean sure it was what we had asked for but when I asked in the past, someone came over with a rag and cleaner and cleaned it for us so I was a little underwhelmed with that one. Also, the table was visibly not ready because my partner noticed some hesitation in the guy before he sat us and instead of saying, "wait let me get someone to clean it for you" he sat us anyway. The entire placed smelled like a mix of dirty water and wet dog. In all fairness we should've gotten up and walked out but the restaurant was packed, so we were assuming the food must be good and we were hungry. The first two appetizer plates were got were dirty and my boyfriend's silverware. We asked for new ones. The second two were also not exactly clean but not as bad as the first. We opted to eat our appetizer from the plate it came on. We ordered the Some Like it Tot. It was cool, nothing to write home about. Expected it to be more crunchy (they are tater tots after all). I ordered the mimosa flight. Only one of the drinks had any semblance of alcohol in it. They were... oddly not good? Like not bad, but not great. The flavors on the menu sounded like they should've been great together but what served me was disappointing. I got the cookie monster pancakes. Maybe 2 stars. Very mid and uninspired. Unimpressed. The pancakes were middle of the road. Not great not bed. Best thing about this place were the nips of maple syrup. My boyfriend ordered the Monster breakfast. Also mid. The Friendly Toast was a short walk from the Back Bay train station and a popular place even though we walked past other breakfast places closer to the station and it was 10 am on a weekday. The service was helpful and friendly. The dining room is eclectic and colorful. I ordered and Lox and Loaded. It was two bagel halves. One topped with cream cheese, lox and pickled onions and the other topped with smashed avocado, roasted tomatoes, cucumber and a fried egg. The dish was served with a small salad dressed with a vinaigrette. We thought the price was really reasonable given the quality of the food. We'd recommend The Friendly Toast to anyone. read more

He did well with substitutions and making sure we had sauces. In terms of what we ordered, I tried the Cinnamon Toast Crunch Latte, which was watery, strong, and waxy from the cinnamon. However, it was presented well and was adequately caffeinated. The hash quiche was delicious, would definitely order again. We got to The Friendly Toast just before 7:30 on a Saturday and I'm glad we were early! After we got seated and had time to look at the menu we started to notice a rush of people coming in for brunch. The stomps here was like a dinner with fun colored outdoor chairs for the outdoor patio. The service was great and they were very knowledgeable about gluten free. Usually there is never a gluten free tortilla option for breakfast burritos so when I saw a gluten free tortilla on the menu, I knew just what I was getting! I got the Breakfast burrito without the crispy potatoes and with the gluten free flour tortilla & chorizo; then gluten free potatoes on the side. My friend and I split the mimosa flight and caffeine dreams which was so fun! I would definitely come back here and try other items on the menu. I haven't been to The Friendly Toast in a long while. I believe this is my first time at the Back Bay location. The wait was crazy long on a Saturday- totally forgot to put my name on the waitlist before getting here. Highly suggest getting on the waitlist online before arriving! It took about 1.5hrs until our table was ready but luckily we were able to stroll around Newbury until it was ready. We were initially seated downstairs but they were nice enough to change our table upon request. I'm not sure why they seat people down there because it feels as if you're eating in a sticky dive bar. The biggest turnoff is that it smelled like you were sitting in a bathroom down there. The upstairs is a totally different vibe- bustling, bright, and much cleaner. The food was very indulgent and tasty. Nothing out of the world but is a guilty pleasure. The flight was a bit disappointing- it all was a kinda watered down that tasted only like syrup. The eggs Benedict was the favorite dish we ordered. The chicken and waffles left much to be desired. The chicken was a bit dry and lacking flavor. My wife warned me about The Friendly Egg. She went to Suffolk in the late 'Aughts (I just enjoy calling them the 'Aughts). This place, along with the Paramount were two places we HAD to go (along with Bova's and Regina Pizzeria). I was briefed, prepared, admonished, and warned. Menu, history, queue, queue again. Prayers were said in order to reduce said queue. The Uber was called. We showed up early. Walking in the door we found no line on our excursion a couple of days before Christmas 2025. Prayers answered. Tons of kitsch on the inside. Think flair (sans ferns) of a fern bar. The staff, I presume equipped for constant demand and little let up of a hectic pace, was downright gregarious. Well versed in discussing the menu. She had some scrambled eggs with stuff in cups, yada yada, what she didn't eat were great midnight snacks later. Ok. Gojuchang fried chicken sandwich. Damn good. Not overpoweringly Asian in its influence; the aioli and cucumbers got a bit lost in the middle (to me). But sub Rice Krispys for panko and hit that with gochujang (or however it's spelled) and now we've got a dish. This was delicious. I showed up on a Friday morning, during the World Cup, so there was already a wait. Since I was solo, I ended up sitting at the bar. Service was prompt and friendly. My boyfriend and I were staying in Boston for a few days and this is the first place we ate. I highly recommend adding yourself to the waitlist. By doing that, we waited almost no time but it was busy for a Monday morning. The restaurant itself was a really cool vibe, very accepting and eclectic. We sat at the bar - barstools had a back which I LOVE. The bar tender was super kind - she gave us recommendations for where to go and her recommendations did not disappoint! Their menu had so many things I wanted to try, but we landed on the breakfast egg rolls, Bowl Me Over and Chicken Cordon Bleu Benny. The egg rolls were big compared to what I was expecting and had great flavor - a good way to kick off breakfast. My boyfriend had the bowl me over and really enjoyed it. He wished there was a little more meat, but I think that's because he didn't realize how much rice there really was. I got the chicken cordon bleu benny. I LOVE a Benedict so was super stoked to try this and it didn't disappoint. This is a place so good you wish no one else knew about it so you could keep it just to yourself. We went here once a few years ago on vacation and it was so good we made it a to-do for as soon as we came back. It's a busy place so try and hit reservations or off times, but summer is good because there are some extra seating spots outside. The food is unique and some twists on your favorites, and service and decor are awesome. I used to live in NH and TFT was my go to breakfast spot as someone with Celiac. They are SO careful and good at what they do. This was my husband's first time ever at this location. He also got to experience the NH one on layover and brought me home some treats. I was so excited to go here together and it did not disappoint! We were in town on school winter break, showing the teen Boston sights. In seeking breakfast near our hotel, we found they had a Friendly Toast. We've been to the location in Burlington Vermont, so we trusted this one would be a good choice also. It did not disappoint. The atmosphere was very much like the other location, with fun nostalgia wall art. The service was great, almost to checking in a little too frequently but not enough to be really annoying. Their indoor space is huge and very retro diner-y, while the outdoor space feels like an artsy café. I tried the boozy coffee flight and really liked the mocha and run-chata. An amazing restaurant in the center of Boston! The facility was vibrant and seemed very busy for a Friday morning. The main dinning room as full so I opted to sit in the outdoor dinning area. The service was exceptional for such a busy day. The hostess was warm and welcoming, and we were seated within 5 minutes of arrival. Our waitress was outgoing and well spoken. She was on point with her service and follow up. The outside dinning area was well kept and clean.
