Dr. Chen is meticulous, always erring on the side of caution, transparent about the process and potential risks if any, and most importantly, he educates us on the importance of saving a tooth and takes the time to share his thought process and knowledge so that we can learn and understand. Having worked at a prosthodontics office, I understand the importance of oral health; ultimately, preventive care is the most important step in our oral health. The fact that Dr. Chen does the cleaning himself, proves to me that he really cares and is passionate about helping his patients. Not only that, his unique & specialized 3 step cleaning has been the MOST effective teeth cleaning I have ever had in my 38 years. I can't emphasize enough on how effective these cleanings are and how it has maintained my fragile gum health. I know for a fact that if I went to Dr. Chen as a child, my teeth would be in perfect condition. Over the course of 5 years, Dr. Chen has replaced multiple old fillings, and is currently working on replacing an old crown & the tooth decay that has been secretly brewing underneath that poorly placed crown. Of course, we discussed the potential risks/outcome, and he showed me the before and after photos of the process (I believe most dentists would have pulled out this tooth which would result in my getting a root canal/an implant). Nevertheless, having a dentist whom I trust wholeheartedly, is a blessing that can sometimes be overlooked. I am forever grateful for Dr. Chen and Julia. Unprofessional Unreliable Inconsiderate Disrespectful These words pretty much sums up my experience with Sam Hersel and his team. After 2 months of them literally ghosting me, (since May where I had a pre-planned appointment for cleaning) I felt compelled to finally write this review to caution others. I've been a loyal customer for 12 years. I even wrote a glowing review. I've always had a pleasant experience until last October 21st where I came in for my dental appointment. I even got a notification text 5 days prior reminding me of said appointment. When I arrived, parking was closed. I was calling and texting several times but no one answered. To my surprise the office was closed. What was so frustrating and appalling was that I can tell they read my messages but instead of being upfront to admit their mistake of failing to notify me of their closure they blatantly ignored me (see photos of my receipts). This is the text I sent them: I took off work to come here. It's been 47 minutes since my appointment time and still no answer. No apology. Nothing. You absolutely wasted my time. Never in my life have I had this experience with Dr. Sam Hersel. It's one thing to make a mistake, but to ignore me and leave me hanging....that is what I am more upset about. I was able to make another dental cleaning appointment in November (interestingly Sam Hersel answered when I called him from my work phone but not from my personal phone and barely apologized for what happened, instead making the excuse that it was a computer issue? (Yes but I know you read my texts). I decided to give them another chance . The November appt was fine. No issues. Still they never took accountability for what happened previously. At the November visit, they had me scheduled to come in on May 7th. This time I texted before driving there. They texted they were closed that week. They texted on a Tuesday 5/5. So if I had not texted, were they ever going to notify me?? They said they would call to reschedule. Two weeks passed, still no call from them. I called them to just please give me an update (I noticed they read my text but I never got a response..sound familiar?). I posted a question on their Yelp page if anyone had issues with scheduling an appt. Interestingly my post was taken down a few days later by Sam Hersel because of my "tone". Really??!! This dentist would rather take the time to take off my question post than to be a real professional, be accountable, and respond to a loyal customer he's had for years! Now it's July. Still no phone call Sam Hersel but I've already gotten a more stellar experience at a family dentist in Arcadia (review will post soon!). He did the full exam and their dental hygienist did a more thorough deep clean WITHOUT the use of numbing medication. She used the proper tools to get the plaque out, did the flossing, and toothbrushing. It didn't hurt one bit! I could've taken a nap! Sam Hersel on the other hand, was more aggressive with cleaning (it would hurt in certain areas even with numbing cream) and just a mouthwash at the end. No flossing. No toothbrushing. Subpar cleaning and horrendous customer service. Take my advice from a former loyal customer, don't come here. If you do, he may end up ghosting you. read more

I truly struggle with seeing the dentist. I met these folks through a health fair at work and thought, "why not?" I was overdue for a check up anyway. The appointment process was easy and they even stayed late for me. The receptionist was very friendly. I arrived to my appointment and was immediately taken back for X-rays and exam. Dr. Hershel addressed many issues that I was dealing with including severe TMJ and muscular pain. He was honest and realistic. After being quoted $4700 by another clinician I was weary about this new guy! I'm so glad that I trusted him. He is really great! He did a thorough airway and skull analysis and his sweetheart assistant, Alyssa took compressions for a mouth guard. The dreaded cleaning was quick and the hygienist Aida was always asking if I was comfortable. She gave me a few shots and before I knew it, the ordeal was over! Emily and Alyssa even helped me with billing since I was switching insurance policies. I like a business who keeps patients first, before pay checks. I was going to be a new patient this morning. I came in for a standard cleaning. I am 32 years old and have never had a cavity. I like to minimize radiation exposure and don't consent to x-rays every time. I've worked with many dentists who understand and are happy to proceed with a cleaning only. When I filled out the new patient paperwork I did not consent to the x-rays and brought it to the attention of the receptionist right away. I was brought back and told they would need only two X-rays to take care of me. I decided to proceed with just two, even though I truly wanted zero. After they took two, the dentist came in and said, "just kidding" and said they would need a full set of X-rays or he wouldn't proceed with a cleaning. I understand if dentists don't want to treat a patient without X-rays. I would have been happy to leave and understood as I did my part explaining up-front I did not want them. What is absolutely unacceptable was I was told two would be sufficient, and then they changed their requirements afterwards - bait and switch. As I left the doctor chased me out to tell me they needed my signature to consent to the X-rays. You have to be kidding?! I asked for a copy of the X-rays and they refused even though they are billing me/my insurance. Next call is my insurance company and next call is an attorney. All they had to do was be up front. Update: Called my insurance company. They had to call the dentist to tell them, by law, they had to release copies of my X-rays. They changed their mind and are now providing them to me. Unbelievable they lied to me about how many they would need to take up front and then tried to withhold them illegally? I don't know where all these positive reviews came from, but two very short interactions with them demonstrates they are unethical. Steer clear. read more

First, I need to let you know that my last visit to the dentist was back in 2012 (for cavities) and before that, it was back in 2008 (wisdom teeth extraction). Did I fear and despise the dentist? Yes, and it's all thanks to my childhood dentist/orthodontist who never waited for my Novocaine to kick in. But I knew I had to face my fear soon; I was extremely overdue for a check-up and root canal work. I met Dr. Hersel's team at a company health clinic event and thought, "Why not?" I am so glad I took a leap of faith! Dr. Hersel and his team are a-m-a-z-i-n-g. Emily is the receptionist and has been fantastic following up with appointment reminders. Alyssa is the dentist assistant (I'm not sure if that's the correct term) and is always so friendly when she sees me. There are a lot of moments when I'm in the room alone with her and rather than being awkwardly silent, she always makes the environment warm and easy-going by talking to you, like a human and not as a patient who just gives da money! She also gives honest opinions/feedback and takes time to answer my questions. Ah, and Dr. Hersel. Everyone on the team knew how much I feared the dentist and he in particular was always making sure I was first and foremost COMFORTABLE and pain-free during my procedures. "Lift your hand up if you feel any pain." When I do, he gives me more Novocaine right away. He's also making sure to pause during the procedure to ask if I'm feeling okay rather than silently going about his work. Like Alyssa, Dr. Hersel takes time to answer my questions and go in-depth with his explanations. He also lists all options for my treatment so he knows what my options are rather than sneakily going for the more expensive route (let's be honest, there are many doctors out there who do this!). In terms of his work, Dr. Hersel is a perfectionist. I can tell how extremely careful and picky he is by making sure steps are completed with great care. I'm so thankful Brilliant Dental Group is so close to my office but even if they weren't, I'd sit through LA traffic for them. So glad my worries over the dentist are over for GOOD! read more

This office has a great staff, two professional n friendly ladies in the front. Once I went in to get my major tooth ache e takin care of, Dr. Hersel explained the xrays to me. He could have charged.me foor a root canal, instead he diligently and carefully opted.to do a lining at the nerve then a filling . Ive been to dentists and dental office before, this is the first doctor that ever took his time to explain and show me the condition, also instead of asling for more money and going for a root canal, he unselfishly did what worked in my favor. The staff create a stress free environment where no one is pressuring you to have a procedure done that you don't need. I've never been a fan of going to the cold, unforgiving dentist chair, but with Brilliant Dental I actually look forward to my visits. Emily and Yadi at the front desk are always welcoming and fun to talk to, as well as nice to look at ;). Aida does a great job distracting me with her stories as she's putting drills and other machinery in my mouth. She is great at what she does and always checks if I'm comfortable. My wife and I have known and have gone to Sam since before he opened his own office several years ago. I very highly recommend him as a dentist. The staff is very courteous and I can't say enough about them. Sam consistently "apologizes" for any hint of pain (which there is remarkably very little of), and he truly wants us to be both comfortable and leaving happy which he does. He'll fix any wrongs at his cost; he isn't a slave to money. He definitely cares more about the service that he provides than anything else. I have heard of other dentists around that will say you need work (even though you really may not need it) and charge you lots of money. Not so with this dentist. He is honest. But let's put it this way. He is not in my insurance plan and I go to him anyway, and will do so for all my family when my kids are old enough to need a dentist. By the way... It's the strangest thing. I came in for a consult and Dr. Hersel, told me I need ed a lot of work done. We went through a hassle to get my Dental records form my pervious dentist. I got a call from the girl at the front desk, she left a message saying they needed mor information from me. I called her back and my call went to voicemail and I didn't leave a message, I just called back over and over again in the following few days. I never heard from anyone from Brilliant Dental Group ever again. Finally, I called and left a message saying, "You know what? I've been through so much trauma from my last dentist and to not be able to get a hold of who I thought was going to be new dentist, isn't helping. I need someone who will answer the phone and be there for me, especially since I'm prepared to sped a ton of money to have restorative work done, among other procedures regarding my teeth. I need someone I can get a hold of." I never heard from them ever again. It's been a couple of weeks and I get more upset the more I think about the unprofessionalism and unnecessary neglect of a possible long term patient. I chose this Dentist because of the stellar reviews on Yelp. I'm very disappointed and after all the pain and suffering I've been through, I deserve better and Dr. Hersel knows what kind of sad, unfortunate events I've had to endure with my dental problems. wow. I had a dental emergency --chipped my front tooth-- and Dr. Hersel squeezed me in on a short notice. First dentist I've met to be this accommodating. The place is small and quaint but inside its so clean that it feels sterilized. The office is up to date with technology and makes ex-rays kinda fun. I would recommend Dr. Hersel if you are looking for someone that is just straight up a good guy that loves what he does. He is knowledgeable, kind and does beautiful impeccable dentistry. My tooth looks like nothing ever happened to it. I can tell its partly the high quality materials he used along with his skill. I almost fell asleep when he was fixing my tooth. He has the most delicate gentle hands--surprising for a man of his built. Overall a great experience and he has definitely earned my continued business.
