I've always had an issue with negative reviews on Yelp that have nothing to do with the food. I understand service is a huge piece of the pie (food pun for ya) but there's a cultural misunderstanding it seems. The food is homemade, fresh and delicious. The lady who runs the place adheres to a cultural standard foreign to myself and anyone unfamiliar with Britain. Based on reviews it appears she believes tea shouldn't be served to children the way many of us believe we should give children hot coffee or porcelain cups. It's clearly rubbed a lot of people wrong hence the bad reviews. If you are looking for a homemade meal that is delicious and helps support a small business you have found the place. The negative reviews make me so sad to see, because I've never had less than a stellar experience here. I enjoy stopping by from time to time to get some tea and packaged snacks, and the ladies have always been kind and welcoming. The last time I dropped in, I had my son with me, who is a typical two year old. Our experience was great, with the lady at the front chatting with him and even complimenting his behavior. My son in law and daughter took me here for a treat... as I'm a Brit! Wow we really put her out!! Didn't know we had to make reservations, we were made aware of that right off the bat. She told us she could seat us at two different tables.that was no problem to us , but there were two tables close together not being used, ok so one had a couple of pieces of paper on it...we asked if we could possibly use it, her reply was no that's my business table! Do not waste your time or money!!!! My daughter and I have traveled across the country and love to visit tea rooms, but this is the worst we have ever encountered in the United States and Canada! My daughter is only slightly shy of 12 yrs by a couple months and they refused to serve her hot tea! To be gracious, my daughter and I offered to buy a tea cup and have cold tea served in the cup instead. The owner came out and was extremely rude saying "tea is for adults"! Just be warned if you still want to visit! Food is mediocre at best and the service is the worst! I would give zero stars if I could. read more

I visited with my mom and two young sons. The Queen's quiche, black bean and corn salad, and red pepper soup were all delicious as well as the tea. But it definitely is not a place to bring children. Fantastic, I had the Bacon, Leak and Sharp Cheddar Quiche as a main meal. With Yorkshire Pudding & Gravy and Carrot & Coriander Soup as sides. To drink I had Barry's tea and I had the Eaton Mess for dessert. Everything was fantastic, the Quiche and Eaton Mess were especially delicious. My daughters and grand daughters and I have been going for years. The food is delicious. The staff super sweet. in June we all went again with my brothers from California and one of my son in law's and the guys loved it too. Yesterday my daughter-in-law and I took my grand-daughter for The Wedding celebration. We had our reservation and we were all so excited. We have been there numerous times. My grand-daughter loves hot tea. We sat down and ordered our pot of tea only to be told they would not serve my grand-daughter as she is not twelve. She is proud of her English heritage. Jeanette came out to our table and told us she absolutely would not serve this little girl. She was extremely rude to us, so much so that we had no choice but to leave. I apologize for the lengthy post now but feel strongly about something that happened today that is causing me to remove my recommendations for a local restaurant I have enjoyed in the past to include several events for military spouses that I hosted years ago. I am truly saddened to do so. After planning a special lunch at The British Pantry with my two visiting granddaughters, I was so excited to share with them a part of our ancestry and customs and courtesies I learned as a child. The girls practiced their "fancy manners" and we all dressed appropriately for the occasion. I made sure to arrive promptly at 11am so as not to take up seats during their lunch rush. As soon as I entered I was asked how many in our party. I said "Just we three!" I was then promptly told that no hot tea would be served to my granddaughters. Thinking the temperature was the issue I assured the server, while still standing awkwardly at the front door that it was no worry as I would be happy to put ice in theirs. I was told no in no uncertain terms would we be served tea in cups. So here I stand with two wee ones anxiously waiting for the special lunch time I had planned for us and so what to do after our 35 minute drive? I politely asked what she would suggest and she suggested an orange drink she said is popular. So I acquiesced. And only then were we seated. So the drinks come out and girl's are in styrofoam...okay, not special but hey! Let's press on...and mines in a glass with four ice cubes melting and what is it? Tang. I didn't even know they still sold the stuff of my childhood but hey! This grandmother is still determined to make some nice memories here so let's order lunch! With these two little ones I'm never sure how much they will eat. I explained this to server and settled on peanut butter and jelly figuring nice and easy. I explained they would share this and I would most likely be ordering a second. After an extraordinary wait our food arrives. Sure enough a pb&j and exactly 6 loose grapes on a plate. Server asks if there's anything else and I ask nicely for another plate. She goes into back kitchen and the next thing that happens is the owner...as cantankerous a woman as I recall from 6 years ago, arrives at my table to let me know if I want an additional plate it will be $2!!! I let her know I spoke about it to server prior to ordering and felt pretty confident I would have to order another pb&j when they were done. Absolutely not, I was told. So I said "No problem!" And proceeded to grab the paper napkin that was folded into the cloth napkins and plopped half a sandwich and 3 grapes down on it. The owner then said...and I quote..."I'm just telling you how it is." The worst part? Having to order that second PB&J because, of course, they were still hungry. At least it was apparently good! I have hosted several military spouse events at this establishment years ago and am quite familiar with the brashness of the owner and I feel so sorry that age has not mellowed her into a bit more kindly a shopkeeper. But never do I recall such treatment. Needless to say I opted not to purchase the child's tea set I was set on buying. It was bad enough I had to part with $32 for lunch with my girls. At least the pasty I ordered was good and the pea salad a nice accompaniment but the heart burn of dealing with such grouchy and rude owner will keep me away for good and cause me to never recommend this place again. So, folks, if you have children...beware! They and those with them are not welcome at this establishment, sorry to say. read more

I went here for lunch today and saw a friend, both of us nursed our babies under a blanket, discreetly.. I then had the owner come to me and tell me she didn't appreciate me feeding my child there because there were men that go in there and that if I needed to feed her I could use the bathroom. I have eaten here many times and I have also nursed my child there before so I'm not sure why the sudden issue but I am disgusted. I promptly left and didn't finish my food. I would also like to state that it is a woman's legal right to breastfeed wherever she likes and at least I covered up and did it discreetly. read more

In town for conference specializing in the Long Eighteenth Century literature and culture. We were looking for for a tea room to channel our inner Austen. We stumbled upon the British Pantry and Tea Room! The atmosphere, tea, food, and dessert were fantastic! We each had a pot of tea that was served in beautiful China tea cups with plenty of milk and sugar. We ordered the quiche, hearty vegetable soup, a salad, some bruschetta. All were perfectly hearty and served warm! AND THE SCONES!!! The scones were to die for. Perfect Devonshire cream and jam. The lemon curd was authentic and delicious! All of this and I spent less than $25 dollars for a great experience with great food. Highly recommend! read more

A friend introduced me to the British Pantry for lunch, now we're regulars! After living the the UK for four years, it's nice to feel like I'm back there having a Coronation Chicken sandwich or a Ploughmans with a spot of tea! The only thing missing is a great pint! Went there for lunch after leaving the Mall. The food was very good and the wait staff very nice. The wait is long but to be expected since each dish is prepared individually. One problem: the owner/cook. We seated ourselves at a table, by-passing one nearer the door. When we sat down I noticed a folder and pen but it seemed to be business related so I assumed the table was free: it was during the lunch hour. The owner came out and asked us to leave. When I asked why since a four seat table was what we wanted, I was told to go to table two. This was done rather sternly but we didn't argue. We went to what turned out to be a rather small uncomfortable table against the wall. Another couple came and sat where we had sat and I warned them that the table was not open and the owner didn't like people sitting there. They stayed but later left for the smaller table. The table stayed open until another couple came in and there were no other seats so they sat there undisturbed. I usually do not have problems in restaurants and didn't want to create a problem at this one. My companion assured me that I was not rude but the woman was. We ate and left and will not return (my only association with the place in the past has been to buy Christmas crackers which will no longer be done). I have seen some very good reviews but methinks they didn't get to meet our "friend". Sorry I don't pay to be mistreated. read more

My daughter and I tried to go there yesterday for a mother and daughter tea party. We have been there multiple times over the past few years, but today we were not even able to order. When we arrived the hostess yold us to let her clean off a table then she would seat us to which we replied thank you. Then she came back and said the owner said you can't sit there and she put us at a table by the door next to the fire extinguisher which actually took up part of the seat. We sat down and tried to order the taste of England for two, it is what we always order when we come. The waitress then told us we couldn't order that because it would take too long to make. We were left no choice, but to leave and take our business elsewhere. It was so disappointing especially since this is the only tea room in the area. I would take my daughter here to practice etiquette when she was younger obviously the employees and owners need a few lessons on etiquette and manners as well. read more

Never even got to the food and tea because the staff was rude and they refused to serve my 9 year old daughter lemonade in a tea cup. The whole experience was terrible from the moment we walked through the door and the only thing we heard (in a rude voice) was "Do you have a reservation?" We did and were seated and asked for waters. Never got any waters. When my daughter ordered tea we were told you have to be 12 to order tea. We said that was fine and she will just have lemonade but please put it in a tea cup so we can have the experience of having tea. Then we were told (in a rude voice) that they don't give kids tea cups and don't we know how much a tea cup costs and how my daughter will probably break the cup and we should have read "The Rules" on their Facebook page and if our daughter wants to drink from a tea cup we should have stayed home. That's when we left. We won't be going here ever again. read more

Love love love this place! My daughter is a picky eater but always enjoys many of the dishes. My wife is British like the owner and is in love with the meals. The only reason I don't give it five stars is the small space, the few tables, and the unflattering atmosphere. read more

After living in England for several years I thought I would try this place. Food is bland a best, and service is the most unfriendly you will see ( I guess unless you are a usual customer). Save your pennies, McDonald's would be a better tastier choice. read more
