I was well aware that Pearl's sells out of their bagels very fast and it probably explains why I've…read morenever tried them. I'm not likely to be awake and out of the house with a thirty minute drive early enough to score the purchase of any. However, my wife had recently just heard about Pearl's, and we happened to be passing in the neighborhood thirty minutes before their 2 PM closing. Yes, they were still open, and no, they didn't have any bagel's left. In fact, that was the very first thing the clerk announced as we came through the door. "We are sold out of bagels and cannot make any sandwiches." As we looked at the small display case we saw four different pastries on a plate. My wife asked what they were and chose two. One was a strawberry marshmallow muffin and the other was some kind of brownie combination ($11 for the two). Once we returned home we were ready to share them. The muffin was super fresh, soft, and very enjoyable. But we didn't believe that there was a strong strawberry flavor and neither of us detected a marshmallow flavor. It didn't matter! This was a delicious muffin no matter what the flavor was supposed to be. The brownie "thing" might have been what their website menu calls a "Featured Daily Brownie." This looked like they used their challah dough to roll up around brownie mix like you would make a cinnamon roll with cinnamon/sugar instead of the brownie mix. Whatever, it was a total success. It was delicious with two different chewy textures and lots of flavor. Maybe some day my wife or I will have to be in Albany around 9 AM and get to try the bagels.

My friend was very disappointed in her bagel. She said it was very "bready" and lacked flavor. Mine was just OK too. It didn't taste the same as what I usually get at the other location in Delmar. It was just as big and had the same ingredients but it just didn't taste the same for some reason. It actually had an overwhelming amount of avocado on it and it kept falling out. Add in a coffee, a hot chocolate, two cans of Diet Coke (and a small cheesecake round for my son) and we were all set. Menu was way more reasonably priced than we expected. Average bagel sandwich (which they fill amply) was roughly $10. All of the fillings were very good. Well seasoned. Creative. Again, exceeded our initial expectations. Even the bagels were surprisingly good. Please note I grew up in NJ so a bagel is essentially unattainable to me north of the Tappanzee Bridge. I was expecting "airport quality," however, it was not half bad. Chewy and tasty for the area. Service left me with two very distinct feelings. 1) the people were AWESOME. Friendly, attentive, seemingly happy to be at work (a rarity). But... 2) there were 6 total customers in the store (some simply reading books) and yet it took 16 minutes for our coffee and hot chocolate and roughly 30 for the sandwiches. Was so weird to experience the quiet of the store - yet the ticket time and wait of a bustling morning at a deli. Oh well. Was a pleasant place to be. Will likely find a different place next week following our upcoming appointment. But was not mad at the experience.

The outside had a crunch with a warm stuffed flavorful center. The dipping sauce took the already delicious bagel to the next level. We tried both the BEC and pastrami Reuben stuffed bagels. I saw the freezer to purchase frozen bagels and I disregarded it. I won't make that mistake again if I food myself at this shop again. The fella that greeted us upon entering was nice and helpful in guiding our selections. The bagels were fresh and as good as any NYC bagel I have ever eaten. My family and I couldn't have been happier with our visit. The only downside was the limited amount of indoor seating available, but that's not a complaint--rather, just something to know if you're planning of stopping in for a bagel. If the weather is cold, the outdoor seating isn't likely an option. I highly recommend Hudson Bagels! If I ever make it back to Hudson, I'll visit this shop again! :-)
