I don't live in the Charlottesville area, but if I did, I'd definitely be a regular at Broadcloth, where Chef Tucker is really doing something special at the most unassuming building you can possibly imagine. Open only 4 days a week, the menu changes each week. If you sit in the lounge or at the bar, you can do a la carte, or there are options for multi-course tasting menus where you can choose your courses for most of them. We most recently visited for our anniversary weekend, sat at the bar with Michael, and everything was just excellent. Great portions, seasoning, protein temperatures, dish compositions...you name it, we enjoyed it. I also really, really appreciate their beverage program and wine list. Their wines by the glass list is pretty extensive, and they not only feature a really good selection from around the world, but also VA wines, especially the ones they feature from their own label, made by Joy Ting. I haven't had a wine of hers I haven't liked, but we chose our own adventure this time around by choosing different wines and splitting most dishes so we could try the majority of the menu. It's a 1-2x a year place for me just because we're not local, but it's definitely worth the drive. read more

The service was phenomenal at this restaurant. Everything from the hostess's genuine welcome to the bartender and server reading our needs, we were very happy with all the staff. The food was just ok though. Everything we ordered was super fresh--but almost too fresh. As in, it tasted like it was just plucked out of a garden, put on a plate, and served. Not a whole lot of flavoring or sauces. A few of my dishes I was quite sure were just small tomatoes chopped into quarters and served, maybe with one other ingredient to differentiate them. The dessert, similarly, seemed as if it was just chopped up peaches with some broken up crunchy biscuits from the grocery store. The wines and cocktails were just ok. We had reservations here for Sunday night, and we were one of the only two tables occupied. Service was very nice, but a mistake was made in taking our orders. We were disappointed that they were out of one of the two starters and had no ice tea or decaffeinated coffee. The mountaineer cheese toast was tasty, as was the scallops. The rainbow trout and ribeye were very good. The pork tenderloin (substituted by the restaurant for the pork belly) was extremely dry and even hard to cut. Coke refills were not free at $4 each and, unfortunately, we were served the wrong wine with dinner but it wasn't worth bringing up. The only other table besides us had order issues with their desserts, as well. Although I'd read great reviews, I wasn't that impressed with our evening at this restaurant. Imaginative and delicious pre-fix menu changes every week and is based on seasonal ingredients. The 4 plates ($60) were plenty for me, for a real experience there is a 6 plate option and a 10 plate tasting menu ($120). Prices are reasonable given the quality. Spacious and quiet. The out of the way location in the Wool Mills means few people have discovered this gem; I hope more do so it stays around! I rate this the best gourmet experience in Charlottesville. read more

We have eaten several times in past years at Broadcloth and loved it. Expensive but well worth it. But went two days ago and had very disappointing experience. Wrong dish came. Hot food was not hot. Two beers on menu and one gone. No coffee with desert. Mediocre taste on several dishes. Not what we expected. Might be worth a 3 if prices were less. But for what they charge and what we expected I would only give them a 1. If I was generous I might excuse them because they had a 200 person special event they were catering next door and perhaps their attention was diverted from us. But bad excuse even if true. We will in future find fine dining elsewhere. read more

My wife and I had an incredible dining experience at Broadcloth last night to celebrate my birthday. From the moment we arrived to a genuine greeting by the hostess until we finished our last bite, the service was outstanding. Orion was our lead server and was terrific. We had at least five staff at our table throughout the evening and everyone worked as a team....the true definition of a well oiled machine. We had the six course meal and every dish was special. So many different flavors and textures. Although every course was great, the scallops were star of the show! Broadcloth was suggested to us by family and we were hooked even before walking in the doors. The staff was exceptional and the food was everything promised. Topped off with the wit and presentation of Cecelia, our brilliant server. Before arriving we were told to try the chef's tasting menu with accompanying drink pairing, which we rudely cut off Cecelia and ordered before she finished explaining the best Broadcloth had to offer. Course after course was beyond expectations and the concept of weekly changing menus was not lost on our foodie pallets. Every dish had us bragging to staff that this was in fact our favorite, only to be humbled by the next plate. We thoroughly enjoyed our time and will be repeat customers. A Sunday dinner filled with perfection! From the food to the cocktails to the staff, everything was amazing. Each ingredient, plate, flavor profile is obviously crafted with such care. This was a meal to be savored, and boy did we do that! We enjoyed the grilled cheese as a starter; an elevated deliciousness with a really lovely herb salad. We additionally tried the scallops and the steelhead trout - both of which were amazing. The scallops were cooked to perfection, essentially melted in your mouth. For dessert we enjoyed the dark chocolate cremeaux which had a kumquat crème. Delightful. The drinks were well balanced, strong, and artfully done. Sweater Weather was one of our favorites, but we also enjoyed their take on an espresso martini - much lighter, more complex, well done. We will be back!!! read more

Incredible dinner! I had been wanting to try this place for a while now, but only just now got around to it (you have to book reservations well in advance). My husband and I did the four course option. The menu has some natural options, such as veggies, seafood, main proteins, and dessert - ours had 12 options total. We decided to select 4 different dishes each and share all of them so we could try the majority of the menu. You didn't have to stick to the categories (you could even double up on say the ribeye if you wanted to) but we did and were SO full, I'm glad we didn't try to add in another main or go for the six course instead of the four. Everything we had was absolutely delicious. Because I'm pregnant we did not do the drink pairing, but the mocktails were fantastic. The location was on the smaller side which made it feel cozy and welcoming, and the waitstaff never made us feel rushed in any way. I would absolutely done here again! I think it's been my favorite fine dining experience we have had in Charlottesville. read more

It feels super exclusive once you're able to get a reservation here. We made ours almost a month in advance for a Saturday night. I was very impressed with the service, they definitely know what they're doing. We opted for the 6 course menu, so we could try all 12 items. In addition to the dinner course, we were also offered an amuse bouche and bread service. In total with a bottle of wine, our total with tip was just under $300 for 2 people. The price, though expensive, was worth the experience. None of the food dishes wowed us however- our favorite was the ribeye which was tender and flavorful, and the pork a close second. The crab cake salad was incredibly salty and the lamb was surprisingly bland. The desserts were unique. All the dishes were appropriate portions, we left quite full! read more

Wife and I visited for our anniversary. We did the 6 course meal, and ordered a few cocktails along the way. They treated us to a glass of Champaign (though not Champaign because it's not from France, the server told us lol). Just about every item we ate was somehow out of our normal comfort zone, but the standouts in terms of amazing cuisine was the "grilled cheese" and the braised lamb over spaghetti squash. This is true haute cuisine in Charlottesville and while expensive it is truly worth the experience. We chose the 8-10 course chef selection and highly recommend it. The food is amazing and while we chose to not participate in the wine pairing the wine specialist and head bartender chose an amazing bottle of wine to go with the entirety of our meal. Was so excited to see this place open up finally! Broadcloth is next door to Selvedge Brewing at the Wool Factory (same executive chef for both too) and is currently only seating inside, but not sure if this will change after the COVID-19 pandemic. For right now they are also only seating what looked like about 8-10 tables at a time to keep everyone more than 6 feet apart. This was our first indoor dining experience since the start of the pandemic and we were celebrating my husband's birthday. We opted for the 8-10 course tasting menu and it was perfect! Each course had smaller portions to make sure you could actually make it through the meal and by the end I was full, but not super stuffed which was exactly what we'd hoped for. The meal was really well paced over 2 hours and included mostly items that were part of the weekend's menu so it was nice to follow along. Our server was so attentive and did a great job explaining each course and asking how we enjoyed everything. She also mentioned if we came back for the 4 or 6 course meal you could pick any items and in any order for your experience. We've had some of the cocktails and beer at Selvedge so we tried some cocktails here too and they were great! Overall we really enjoyed our experience and hope to be back again someday! read more
