Great corner store. My goto for odds and ends where a trip to the supermarket is too far. Milk, bread, lottery tickets, etc...

So disappointing to see the decline of Stop & Shop in Arlington. I already have a job, so I…read moreusually skip self checkout, but last week the lines were way long for a live employee. Choosing apparent speed over actual speed was my first mistake. My second mistake was following the instructions to place my item in the bagging area. I placed it right there in the area marked BAGGING AREA, but could not ring in any other item because the machine did not agree that I had performed as directed. Along comes an employee who persuades the machine that I had performed as directed. But oops, I did it again: I scanned an item and put it in the bagging area. Back comes the nasty little employee with nasty remarks drenched in sarcasm, all about how she's here to help me but can't do that if I don't calm down. Calm down? Help me? I decided to go elsewhere, and on my way out, she shouted remarks about religion. There was no need to escalate this already unpleasant situation like that. Avram and Carol would be appalled, but they're gone, as is the work ethic and attention to customer preferences at their formerly wonderful store. *sign*

My friend and I wound up in the overflow a little after 11am when the event started. I've always seen signs around when I'm driving in the area for other events or goods that they are selling. In the fall they seem especially popular as well for pumpkins and fall activities. The market area is brightly lit. Given the neighborhood, as everyone else has commented expect prices to be at a premium. The samples we tried at the Strawberry Festival were tasty. My favorite was the short cake. They also offered tickets at $1/ticket for some other paid offerings such as their ice cream which I skipped. They had someone dressed up as the Green Monster so that was a fun photo op for the family too. The event had a lot of staff so each station was moving. In fact one of the owners/managers came by seeing a long queue near the entrance by the pasta said we could walk around to the other stations since no one should be waiting in a line (ignore the line to park and get in haha.) I wouldn't necessarily go out of my way to visit but it's an option for local. I've also gone to Wagon Wheel which is smaller for seasonal / market type items.

I wish they keep it open till 10 pm at least every day, not just in the weekend. We got delayed because of our flight so we couldn't get anything the night we arrived, but at least they open at 7 am. Nice market, great architectural touches, elegant, upscale, the prices reflect that! A pretty nursery upon entrance, on their grounds, huuuge. The selection of food isn't amazing, but you can get what you need. Their bakery is pretty good and prices are Ok-ish, but a quick Tip: shop early, otherwise, the items go fast! We liked their muffins, tried blueberry, cranberry orange, apple and cinnamon. Big, fluffy, full of fruit and flavor! Danishes are on the small sizes, nice croissants. Loved their ham and cheese and turkey and cheese pastries as well. Their cranberry pecans small rolls are nice for coffee. Juice selection is minimal and prices are high! Service varies- most of the folks we dealt with were nice, one cashier just OK. They even had a party the Sunday we were there but we were out and about in town. Cute grocery store, super clean, came in handy while staying in the area during our Boston trip!

Fish cakes were small and perfectly uniform - almost like they were frozen rather than prepared on site. Green curry had some spice but was mostly one note, there just wasn't much depth of flavor. Vegetables were all cut in huge hunks - both dishes had giant pieces of red bell peppers and onions. Fried rice was pretty bland and barely had any Chinese broccoli in it. Ambiance was bare bones - you order at the counter and they bring you your food and plastic side plates. Half the tables were stacked with boxes and bags of takeout orders. To top it off there's no bathroom, we were told to use the bathroom at another local business. If I'm gonna spend $60 somewhere, I expect to be able to wash my hands before eating and use the restroom. Perhaps there are some specialty dishes that we didn't try but this was my 2nd time ordering from here (I got take out once before) and both times the food was pretty bland. A truly underwhelming experience - especially when there are so many better restaurants in the area.
