My mother-in-law rarely makes the trip down to "The Avenue" (Massachusetts Avenue) anymore because she misses so many of the businesses that have left. When she does trek down, it's for the delectable, overflowing with meat, pastrami sub from D'agostino's. There's so much pastrami that she takes out half of it and saves it for a second serving. My husband says that the pastrami is very lean and that's what makes it so good. Meanwhile, I'm the vegetarian who loves that they offer a cheese sub! We recently moved to the Waltham area and have been on the hunt for the best spot to get an Italian Sub delivered! After pouring through reviews and local forums, people consistently mentioned D'Agostino's. I decided to give it a try. Everyone was right: It is a great sandwich! I ordered the small, traditional Italian sub. I ordered mine with easy oil/vinegar, tomatoes, hots, lettuce, and mayo. I'm not a fan of raw onions whatsoever. The sub arrived perfectly, fresh not soggy. The sub roll is super soft, yet somehow holds up to the vegetables and condiments! The bread is freshly baked and some of the best bread I've had from a sub spot! The sub was piled generously, yet sliced perfectly thin for a more "airy" bite. This is exactly how I like my sandwich. I am not a fan where it's like biting into a giant, thick slab of meat. Here, the meat is sliced thin and arranged in such a way that every bite is "airy". True sub fabs will know exactly what this means. The closest example to this is the chain, Jersey Mikes. The meats were sliced thin. Arranged perfectly on that pillow-soft sub roll. Veggies were great, fresh and crisp. Juicy tomatoes. Delicious hots that truly make the sandwich! This is our new go-to for subs in Waltham. The worst thing on Yelp is when a phenomenal joint has some bad review because of some arrogant unhappy individual who was upset that day and decided to take it out on a deli. This place rocks. Ordered these sandwiches for delivery around 11am on a Tuesday online and gotta say, I'm impressed! Delivery was quick, everything was marked and packaged well - nothing missing. We got the Italian and a pastrami. Thess sandwiches were put together perfectly, as in every bite had a flavor of everything. I added the hots to mine and wow, that was an amazing flavor boost. It had a little kick but nothing too extreme. The pastrami had the cheese layered within, so it was perfectly mixed, and the pickles on top added the perfect crunch. The rolls were fresh on both sandwiches as well. My Italian easily made for 2 meals, the pastrami on the other hand went quickly. I dragged myself in to find an extraordinarily long deli counter staffed by a couple guys who were perky and enthusiastic even at 10PM. I decided on the meat I wanted and the guy kept suggesting additions. 4 or 5 different cheeses, all sorts of veggies, a couple different kinds of peppers. By the time he was done, the thing I had imagined as a modest sandwich had morphed into a gargantuan thing of delicatessen beauty. I would see this shop in Tv shows like Friends, will and grace back in the day but I didn't even know we had one of these in Boston till recently, I thought it was just New York. D'Agostino's Deli is the oldest deli in Massachusetts because of its famous sandwiches and unbeatable service. Such a delight to have visited this place they are friendly and service is incredible. My sandwich was excellent and a mouthful and it was delicious. Apparently they have been a standard in mass since the 60s. They have everything you need in a deli and their menu hasn't really change, but the consistency of their food is what makes them different. I love this place! I drive from Acton to Arlington just for their sandwiches! The last two times that I've drove there, they tell me "we ran out of rolls." I'm not talking about walking in the door five minutes before they close either! I just left there and again they ran out of rolls & they don't close for another hour! Just in the three minutes that I was in the store, they told at least four other people who were visibly not happy that they ran out. I can understand it happening once in a blue moon but this is twice in the past ten days that I drove there and couldn't get a sub. They don't even give you an alternative. I spoke up and asked if I buy a whole package of bread if they'd make a sandwich for me? Then one of the guys spoke up and said that they could make it on white bread! If I hadn't said anything, they would have let me walk out the door with nothing! D'Agostinos, take some advice from a long time customer (20+ years) order more rolls! I guarantee you that it'll be better to have a few extra rolls at the end of the night than to have a bunch of unhappy customers. Their Italian sub is like NOTHING I could ever get in Phoenix, and I'm slowly beginning to realize that Massachusetts just does Italian better. Their hot peppers (is it a relish? Is it a spread? I had to throw away this sandwich because there was such an unreasonable amount of mustard on it, it was inedible. Anyone who puts so much mustard on a sandwich that the bread is literally drenched in it and it is all over the outside of the sandwich and the wrapping and think it's a good idea to let a customer pay for it shouldn't be making sandwiches.
