Very unassuming from the outside, the sign currently says "Zhong Yue Restaurant" This is a steam table type place where you can get a combo of rice or noodles and 4 items for $9 which is an incredible deal. The guy in there did not seem to speak much English but he was kind and welcoming anyway. I opted for the noodles, which were slightly better than the standard over cooked Chinese take out lo mein- soft but not mushy. I got gong bao Ji ding, some sort of tofu and wood ear dish, and a potato curry. The chicken was super fatty and rich dark meat with a juicy, tender texture. You could really taste the wok hei in this dish and it had some pleasant heat to it. This is probably my favorite dish I got. The potato curry was also flavorful, and the potatoes were not mushy and over cooked- just creamy and marinated in curry flavor. The tofu was surprisingly deep in flavor. The sauce completely penetrated the fried triangles of tofu with slight sweetness and savoriness. It was pleasantly chewy and overall seemed to be expertly prepared. This picture of the food genuinely looks horrible, but you have to take my word that everything I ate here was very delicious. I find that often this type of place offers many dishes that all taste very similar but each of the things I tried had its own distinct flavor profile. I ate at one of the few seats inside and found it to be clean and comfortable with a large jar of tasty chili oil available. I often come to this area to run errands and I am extremely eager to add this spot as a vital stop on my itinerary next time I'm in the neighborhood. read more

This small restaurant is mainly a takeout spot for locals, located at the intersection of Broadway and Justice Avenue, and its current name is actually Zhong Yue Restaurant. It's run by an older couple who are quite kindly people, feels like they're very much trying to make an honest living. The inside of the restaurant isn't impressive, a simple setup with a main hot food display and table for "checkout", seating is limited to a few stools on a small narrow counter at the front of the store. I was in the area and dropped by to pick up some food to go, got the following: - zhongzi $3.50 each: sticky rice with pork and savory mung bean paste wrapped in bamboo leaves. A little on the bland side though they have a large piece of meat inside, nothing a little soy sauce (or any other Asian sauce for that matter) couldn't fix. - stir-fried rice vermicelli $6 for the large box, $3 for the small one: tasty well-cooked noodles with slivers of cabbage, onion and carrot, the large box could serve 2 people easily. - choice of 3 dishes with rice, fried rice or noodles, and served with a side of clear soup (had veggies in the soup the day I went) $8: they do choice of 2 dishes with above for $7, choices of 4 options for $9. You choose from the dishes in the display counter. Homestyle, tasty and nothing fancy in the least bit, but well worth the price. Was feeling some classic asian food this morning (egg with pork congee and some fried dumplings) and was not disappointed. The lady who works here is so sweet, greeting me when I walked in and spoke English which is great for their business to get everyone! As others said, it's a no frills place but just enough to make you feel like you getting the real chinese food for such a low price! Im not sure if they take credit card since I paid cash but didn't see any sign saying otherwise. Definitely come here and support a small business. read more

I was randomly in the mood to find good fried dumplings and fried pork buns. This was one of the places that popped up in my search as I was looking for semi-specialty places by me. This is very much a hole in the wall place. I walked in and was greeted immediately by the 2 ladies that were there. All I saw were the food + rice + soup items in the hot bar. Then I noticed a menu on the right and the lady asked what I wanted and let me know there are a few things that are not available. They did have the fried dumplings and fried pork buns all the way on the left hand side of the hot bar. First both items were barely warm. The fried dumplings were rather salty but the filling to wrapper ratio was not too bad. The fried pork buns were pretty terrible, the bun itself was very dry and the filling was pretty much non-existent. Crossed this place off my list for fried dumplings and fried pork buns. read more

Broadway Snacks has most of the things I want in a neighborhood spot: divey, no pretense, with affordable and solid food. While Chinese name (上海風味) is more akin to "Shanghai Flavor" the concept of it being a small eatery that offers simple snack like foods still rings true. Overall, this place feels like a 3 star eatery, but I like the setup so much I'm giving it a 4. As noted earlier, the place is grimy and even a little dodgy. Seating is limited; this is one of those places best for solo dining and/or takeout. One will find the display counter loaded with hot foods across the Chinese food spectrum. Go with a combo and pick a few items (mix-n-match style) for $7 or so. The service is very straight forward, but not overly warm. Cash will always rule in these parts. While it's not a destination spot, it is one that the neighborhood will always benefit from. The food is not outstanding but it works well in a pinch. Directly outside on awning, items such as fried dumplings (鍋貼) or shengjian bao (生煎包) are advertised but the end result is kind of a heartier, doughy version of what I tend to prefer. The other hot foods vary from fried noodles to fried chicken, congee and hot and sour soups, etc. The taste is enough to where it might not win over everyone, but the price tag most certainly will. read more

I spend about $20 at a time because it'll last for me and my BF for multiple meals. $20 is a lot of food! Parking here is hard as hell, there is none! If you come in a car, two people are needed. one to drive it around or stay with the car and the other person to run inside. The selection is better in the morning and early lunch. I ordered Fried Pork Dumplings because I really, really craving it after hours of studying at a cafe. Big mistake on my part. First off, the keyword is 'fried' pork dumplings. It was not crispy at all and it was moist. The minced pork meat was really dry and had a tough texture. One good note is that they are pretty meaty and big but still, not good at all. I also had their congee and noodle soups before because my family bought them home. I was not impressed at all. They have no flavor what so ever. Now, it's a small cafeteria that sells all the stuff you find at a food cart vendor or the small food shops in Flushing Chinatown. It is small with stills around the window high table and there is a communal table in the center with some chairs. The place is clean and staff is nice. The food is inexpensive and filling. Many seniors, blue collar workers and locals frequent this place. The two food cart vendors on Broadway are gone, so this place fills the spot. They also have coffee. There's not many places where you can still get full on $2. The food might not live up to the tastes of a real foodie but when I'm looking to get a good cheap meal in the area, this is where I go. They don't do a good job of advertising on their store front but once you go in you can see 90% of what they offer right at the counter in the heated buffet area and there are a LOT of options. The seating can sometimes be limited but I usually order to go anyway and eat at work. They're very quick to bag things up and are pretty generous with their portions. The order of chow fun I usually get comes in the typical styrofoam chinese food container which they stuff both sides of before jamming it closed - all for $2.50. tldr; Great cheap food for those on the go. This is a new place that is near the grand ave train station. This is my place to go for my breakfast and something my lunch. They have a variety of tradition and well known chinese food. The average price for each item doesnt exceed $5. They offer pan fried dumplings, lo mein, chow mein and much more. They dont have the best food but it is still good. read more
