We really enjoyed our dinner at the Broken Plate. The food was good -- we had the lamb souvlaki which was tender, and the pita was tasty. I enjoyed my cocktail, Garden of Aphrodite, which was $5 off for Thirsty Thursday. They also gave me a free scoop of gelato with a sparkler for my birthday which was nice. This is a very solid place for a good casual dinner in a nice environment. The restaurant itself is very pretty with a clean, simple aesthetic. While we did not sit outdoors, they seem to have a nice outdoor area as well. The food was good, nothing groundbreaking, but everything I wanted. I had the chicken souvlaki which was tender and seasoned very well. I really enjoyed the garlic potatoes it came with. We shared the saganaki, which they were able to make gluten free, and the Greek salad as appetizers. The salad seemed very fresh and was a nice way to start the meal. I had the Greek spritz to drink and enjoyed it. Very refreshing and light. One of the people I was with got the baklava for dessert and really enjoyed it. It is served with a brown sugar gelato that he raved about. Overall, I would definitely come back to this spot. A Saturday night, no problem getting a reservation. The two of us did not like sitting so close to other " tables for 2", it was kind of like a cafateria ambience vibe. The lamb and chicken souvlaki dishes we ordered looked mouthwatering, but unfortunately either they forgot to season the meat or this is their " recipe" which honestly I make better myself. lemon potatoes, and veg were great, but I felt the tzaziki tasted like it had flour mixed in it. Tried this restaurant for the first time last week. Overall very good but a bit pricey. Their calamari is the best I've ever had and I would highly recommend their lamb souvlaki plate. You can tell they have really maximized their space and the modern Greek interior adds a nice touch. My only note on service/food is that when my lamb first came out it was very rare but, our server took it back to cook it more the second I asked :) Overall I will probably return but not too often as it is a bit expensive. read more

Took a friend for birthday dinner last night. It was my first experience with Broken Plate. I was only minimally impressed. Before going any further, my experience with Greek food is extensive, both on the heavily Greek populated Danforth in Toronto as well as in Greece. Over a span of twenty years, I must have eaten well over 1200 meals on the Danforth, averaging 4 to 6 times per month. When I lived in Europe and the UK in the late seventies through to the mid eighties, I regulary went to Greece for R&R. The restaurant was more like a fusion that really Greek Greek food. With the ribs and fries appetizer, the ribs were prepared to perfection but the batter coated fries were hard enough to break teeth. The lamb shoulder was near tasteless, portion too small, and terribly underseasoned. The mashed potatoes were mushy and boringly tasteless - literally no potato flavour. The broccolini and carrots were perfectly prepared. The sauce had flavour but underseasoned as well. I had to ask for salt. The price paid was about 50 percent higher than what I would have paid on the Danforth in Toronto but the portions and general size of the meal were much smaller than that of the Danforth. I have yet to find a reasonably priced Greek restaurant in Calgary that serves an authentic Greek size of meal, compared to Greece and the Danforth. The lamb shoulder portion should have been double the size to match the price. The quality of service was excellent. The servers were attentive, super friendly, and always there when needed. Too bad I was not as happy with the food as I was with the service. The search for a real Greek experience still eludes me in Calgary and I have been here for well over a quarter of a century. At least they do not pretend to be a pizza joint. I go to the Italians for Italian food and to the Greeks for Greek food. Many reviewers here are raving about dishes that are not even truly Greek. read more

The Calamari dish I was serve looked nothing like the one in the menu. The Calamari was long, not rings, and they were not crunchy as before. I was disappointed. I also find the Tzaziki sides to be nowadays too small for the price. read more

The Grilled Octopus was wonderful, but there were too many lentils for me. I loved the clams that came with it and the presentation was very pretty. Could have also done with maybe one more piece of octopus! I also ordered a Rock Creek Peach Cider, delicious. It came in a can and they gave me a glass to pour it in, but after pouring, I looked at my hand and there was something dirty on it that came from near the bottom of the can. Ultimately it didn't affect my drink, so I just wiped it off, but it was pretty gross. At the end our meal, my dad ordered a bourbon vanilla ice cream or gelato. There was absolutely no bourbon flavor. That was definitely a let down, especially with the amount and the price. read more

Although the food was good, I was very disappointed that the restaurant would not accept my gift card which was completely valid! I let our server know before ordering our meals that I had a gift card which would be used for the bill. This was accepted and we went ahead and ordered. This was a celebratory birthday lunch and the end of the experience unfortunately changed the atmosphere for the worse. The manager kept saying over and over "she completely understood my feelings" but they would not honour a valid gift card because of technical issues. There wasn't anything she was willing to do to compensate for the misunderstanding and there was no signage in the restaurant warning that gift cards would not be accepted. My friends who were expecting this to be my treat had to bring out their wallets to pay. We were all expected to tip generously as well. read more

We had an excellent dinner last evening! The souvlaki was amazing! Tender chicken, beautifully seasoned and perfectly cooked fresh vegetables. The lemon potatoes were wonderful! I had failed to mention that it was my partner's birthday when we first sat down, and AFTER we paid our bill I inadvertently mentioned it. The waiter immediately jumped on it and insisted we stay and he brought out a delicious piece of cheesecake with a sparkler in it!! Even though we were stuffed, we managed to devour it. Yum!!! That was so very thoughtful and thank you to the waiter!! You do this business proud! We will definitely be back! read more

Back again, have been several times just no reviews. Was wonderful as usual, we went on a busy weekend night and had to ask to be seated at the bar or a 20 min wait for a table. Bar was great, bartender was friendly and talkative (it only seats about 6). Ordered a large sparkling water. Wife ordered chicken souvlaki (always orders this) and I had the lamb shank (my go to). Both were wonderful, portions large and came in at the under $30 per entree sort of usual for Calgary. Shank was huge and fell off the bone. Had a beet humous dip for an appetizer for 2, and each had a $9 creme brule (I am not a good sharer of this dish). Evening for two was $100 with tip. read more

Heard about this restaurant somewhat circuitously, and finally decided to try it out. Although hopes ran high, they were cracked by food that is not all that great at all (definitely 3 overall). Went there on a cold afternoon, ordered Lamb Shank Giouvetzi with tomato orzo (Greek 'diamond' pasta) and brocolinni: all tasted good but the orzo a let-down (my fault). I'd taken for granted that it would come with Greek potatos, tzatziki and feta, and the tangy layers that come with that, but no luck. Just no 'wow' here. My wife had 1/2 order of Greek ribs with broccolini and undercooked Greek rice, but just not great for either of us. Both of us were served strangely curled, wrinkly soft, and overcooked carrots, a first for me in any Greek restaurant and likely should not ever be served. As usual, everything comes down to the cook/chef: if he or she just isn't all that with it, doesn't have a special flair or the 'X' factor, then what emerges out of the kitchen will disappoint to some extent. A modern pleasantly-lighted venue off MacLeod Trail, it's attractive, but for us lacking Greek character. But we appreciated our cheerful Slovak waiter who most certainly aimed to please. Unlike Yianni's in Edmonton, no ceremonial plate smashing here... Other venues for Greek in Calgary are little better, for each may have a few highlights but are nestled among too many lows. Where do will we therefore continue to go for great Greek? Back to 'My Greek Plate' in Cochrane! Due to distance, we don't get out there often enough, but on a sunny non-snowy day it's well worth it! There you can count on the ribs, any lamb or chicken dish because the owners - all close relatives - are heavily invested in the business and have brought their gifts to the fore. But at this place? Seems like the normal absentee owner(s) with the usual hirelings, or a chef who simply doesn't have that special discerning touch. But don't necessarily trust me. Wow, what an amazing meal! We are traveling and staying only two nights. We've been on the road several days touring Canada so we are a little tired of eating out. We picked this place because of other reviews and are glad we did. We are even thinking of eating there tomorrow. My daughter and I had the clams and linguini, son had lamb skewer, wife had some type of stuffed ravioli, which were all amazing. So nice to get a wonderful meal. We also had the warm pita bread and dipping sauce (taziki or something like that). This is a must try if you are in the area! So good!! read more

Had a wonderful take out dinner tonight from the Broken Plate in Willow Park. We placed our order at peak time (7pm) on Saturday night and it was ready within 30 minutes. We didn't eat on the patio due to smoke / heat. The meal was well packaged in recyclable waxed paper boxes (no styrofoam!). Each box was labeled and when opened the contents were nicely 'plated' - very appealing presentation in a take away box. We shared a starter of calamari - it travelled reasonably well (though we knew maintaining crispness in a sealed box would be a challenge. Tasty. I had the golden beet salad. Delicious!!! Loads of perfect beets, greens, figs and herbed goat cheese. Dressing in a container on the side complemented the tasted beautifully. I topped with a skewer of grilled lamb. Great meal. My husband enjoyed a large (he saved half for lunch tomorrow) portion of moussaka. I tried a bite ... mmm decadent! Love the cinnamon spiced beef and bechamel. A total treat. A total treat. Chart topping experience over here! Upon entry you are greeted by a polite hostess and ushered to a seat in a cute restaurant with modern Greek music playing. You can't help but get in the mood for an authentic experience. I tried the Lamb Shank and my wife tried the Ionian Pasta. The Lamb was tender fall off your bone and seasoned perfectly. The tenderness was ridiculous, and a definite encore order for me in the near future. The Ionian Pasta was loaded with in shell mussels, fresh calamari, and the shrimp that you should share .. but you end up eating all yourself. Servers checked on me often, and not just one, but others too. Made me feel like they operate as one family rather than territorial paycheque players. Amazing. What took the cake for me was the GM coming out to check on our table. All class with some background on our meals and a genuine desire to befriend us. A much less than stellar showing. This evening we ordered the mussel risotto. The mussels tasted off so called the waitress over. "What do you want me to do about it?" Ok, so she's a novice. After speaking to the kitchen she reported that "that's what they're like tonight". Where is the problem solving to make it right? What has changed with the business? They're not hiring experienced staff and not coaching the novice staff? Was this a one-off bad experience or is there a more systemic issue? Are they cruising on the excellent past reputation but lowering the standards? We won't be back until we hear about some improvements. read more

We were driving around in the SE and decided that since we missed dinner at 5, and at 6 we should try to have dinner at 7. With a little bit of discussion about where to go, I was able to convince my fiancee that we should try out this little gem. Now remember that I am going by nothing more than, friends word of mouth and literally taking transit past it for almost a year straight. Also the only other greek restaurant that I have been to was Opa! Souvlaki...which is not a fair comparison at all. We walked in and the first thing that we see is a bunch of waiters standing there with flaming plates...all right then this could be cool. Not having made a reservation on a busy Friday night, we weren't seated right away but then again we only waited a handful of minutes before we got a table. Of course the first thing we ordered was our appetizers...but then seeing another table get the flaming plate treatment again. We decided no matter what we were going to try that as well. Mmmh cheese on fire...now it may not sound that good. But its about the way they present it, and I personally love a unique food and if its a little bit sweet. I will not complain. Not a single complaint about the food, other than I wish my stomach was larger so I would have been able to fit more in. About halfway through our dinner some people started smashing plates, not the ones they ate off. But plates that were handed to them. And then a belly dancer came out, and you could see that at every table (did I mention it was a packed house??) everybody stopped eating and watched. When the belly dancer had completed her tour of the restaurant, it seemed like everyone went back to eating. But for those 20 to 30 minutes or whatever the time was, everyone stopped what they were doing and enjoyed a little bit of this tradition. read more

This was my first time to Broken Plate and it was very enjoyable. Modern decor, friendly service, and excellent Greek food made for a wonderful night out. We started with hummus & pita and it was excellent. I then had the veal lemonato: three medallion-sized pieces of veal cooked with lemon (absolutely delicious!) accompanied by rice pilaf (slightly overcooked), broccoli, asparagus, and baby corn. A glass of sauvignon blanc rounded out the meal. Overall, it was an excellent evening and my only criticism would be that our waiter was a little on the slow side (but otherwise he did a decent job). Take note: If you're looking for souvlaki, you won't find it on the dinner menu - it's only offered at lunch. read more

Frustrating experience today as our server packed everybody's leftovers into ONE BOX! A serious health and safety concern in my opinion, as it's unsanitary to mix foods eaten by various people together... needless to say this box of food went to waste. This was really unfortunate. I didn't get to eat my meal, as I was tending to my child that night. I am now home and totally wishing I had the entire order of risotto I had to leave behind (and I happen to be pregnant and extremely hungry lol!) The food was otherwise fresh and delicious. On our first date, my wife and I went for Greek food. Tonight, for our twentieth wedding anniversary, we went to the Broken Plate. The decor is only slightly Greek, but the room is open and airy. The hostess was prompt and friendly, and gave us a nice table by the window. The server appeared quickly and was willing to answer our questions. The Trilogy of Spreads and the Saganaki (Opal!) were a nice start. For the main course, I opted for the Lamb Sword. The Lamb was cooked to perfection, with just the right amount of seasoning. The vegetables were fresh and crisp. The potatoes were good. The rice was okay. My wife selected the Kotopolo Trelo (I know, pasta at a Greek restaurant seems wrong). She seemed to enjoy it. In all, it was a nice experience and a good restaurant. We will likely try it again. Dinner for two with two appetizers, one beer and one 6 oz. glass of red wine for $108. read more

Rack of lamb Lamb chops stuffed chicken Moussaka Saganaki Calamari Moist, tender, flavorful, no game-y flavor, dinner plates come with lots of potatoes. You will definitely leave full or even take a doggy bag home. I would definitely come back for the rack of lamb! The night we went a belly dancer broke into the room, much to our collected glee! We were told it'll happen frequently throughout the Holiday season--and it genuinely created a festive feel. There's also the opportunity to smash some plates on the floor, if you so desire; but don't worry about injury--they provide plate smashing instruction. I recently took my girlfriend for a well deserved dinner out at the Broken Plate Restaurant. The ambiance was quaint, comfortable and warm which was further complemented with its fantastic service. We started by sharing the Grilled Octopus that was nothing short of mouthwatering. Our main courses were an Ahi Tuna Bowl and Lobster Ravioli. Both dishes were very well presented and tasted amazing. The drinks flowed nicely into the mix and the evening was an absolute success. The pricing was very reasonable and I had no problem justifying the overall spend. I came to The Broken Plate for dinner with my work, and was really excited for Greek! We ordered the Saganaki and the sampler trio that had hummus, tzatziki and a red pepper spread to start. I thought the pita was so, so good as were the dips. I love cheese, but I wasn't a huge fan of the Saganaki. As one of my co workers put it, it tastes like pizza cheese from a cheap pizza place. Either way, that was more or less personal preference. My issue was that I ordered the Golden Beet salad and by the description on the menu, it sounded as though it was literally a full beet salad, with figs, feta and some greens. Instead I got a green salad with a couple chunks of beets and few figs and cheese pieces. There was also TONS of onions which weren't indicated on the menu that it would be on the dish. (If you've read my other reviews, you'll know how frustrating I find that). It wasn't just me that had issues with the food. Most people found their dishes to be very salty, however the lamb was apparently amazing. The service was good, the girl was really great and informative on the items on the menu. Overall not too impressed...I will still you Yiannis in Edmonton for my Greek fix :) read more

The atmosphere here is so awesome! We went for my cousin and sister's birthday and they were so amazing to us. We just ordered starters and some entrees to share among the group. Our waiter, Gene, was great and brought us extra pitas when we ran out, not once but twice! He also put up with our other crazy demands with a smile on his face. We weren't a huge fan of the Saganaki which is a cheese that is flambéd. It is great to see the huge flames but the cheese is rather heavy in the stomach. The lobster ravioli was delicious although I wish that it was a little warmer. I will be coming back here for sure to try out more of the menu. read more

We did not have a lot of time on our hands for dinner, decided to behave tonight and have salads so we decided on Greek. Not a fare we choose to have too often but we were hoping for Mediterranean freshness! In we went and were seated with a clump of other diners in a not so busy place. The crowds around us were loud, bordering on obnoxious but we stayed put. I ordered wine and if it was 5oz by the glass it was the smallest 5oz I have ever seen! So, I had two. We ordered the lamb salad and the calamari salad so we could share both. Our waitress was pleasant and friendly. If you like your salad crisp and refreshing, your best bet would be the calamari salad if you like seafood. The calamari was plentiful on top and not battered too thick which was nice. I liked the light touch of feta, fresh tomato, onion and cucumber with the lightly dressed romaine. The lamb salad was nothing like the first, had no brightness to it. Just warm, dark spring type greens with red onion, pistachios and figs. I did enjoy the figs, wish there had been a few more on the plate! The lamb itself was OK, shredded and had decent flavour. The music in the restaurant was odd - went from Arabic to Italian. Was hoping for more of a Greek experience. 2 salads and 2 glasses of wine = just over $50. Not cheap, but nothing in Calgary is cheap. read more

Simply solid! We walked into the Broken Plate after walking out of another restaurant due to lack of service. We were not in a good mood. As soon as we opened the door at the Broken Plate we we warmly greeted, quickly seated, and were met with consistently excellent service. Thanks Steve. I have been here before and it was quite good. Nice to see it still is. We ordered the calamari, which was perfect with the wine and cold Mythos beer. The mains were a "Sword Chicken", which came on a skewer and the chicken penne (Kotopulo Trelo). Both dishes were excellent. The restaurant has a nice atmosphere, first rate staff, and food that is consistently tasty. If you are in the South this is a great place to try. read more

The Broken Plate has a wonderful atmosphere, and even better food. Yet beyond the food, the service is incredible. The service really is incredible. Originally I ordered a salad that was lacklustre in nature, however, the server willing changed it for something much better without a surcharge. I was really impressed with this bending over backwards. As far as food is concerned, be sure not to skip the saganaki. It's sooooo good. And they light it on fire. Ah, Kleftiko (aka Bandit Lamb). My all time favourite dish and The Broken Plate does an excellent (if slightly overpriced) version. I do wish the sides were a little more substantial for what you pay for the dish as a whole, but when you start pulling that ridicuously tender braised lamb shank off the bone you can forgive their shortcomings. Oh, and if you are there around 9 I think it is, you get the joy of greek music, dancing and plate smashing - OPA!! A few ouzo shots and you can complete your fairly pricy meal with some wonderfully decadent baklava! Go on, splurge a little. read more
