Modern Steak is located at the bottom floor of the Hyatt Regency in downtown Calgary, and my team was taken out to dinner here while we stayed at this hotel. I liked the ambiance and service, it was elevated yet welcoming. The on-the-house umami popcorn on the table made for a great snack before our food got here. Our team split the A5 wagyu ribeye, so I decided to get the miso cod with mushrooms as a side. I wish I had just gone overboard with steak as the cod was quite disappointing. The wasabi cream sauce was overpowering, and I didn't taste any miso on the cod. The fish was slightly overdone, so the texture wasn't the best either. The A5 wagyu was pretty good with the different salts on the table, but it could have been more melt in your mouth. Everyone else did enjoy their steaks, so I'd recommend ordering a ribeye here. The sides were generous and great for sharing, I loved the mushrooms and the rigatoni. For desserts, their carrot cake was really good with many layers and delicious cream cheese frosting. Overall, I felt like this was a standard hotel restaurant, definitely overpriced for what you get. read more

I ate here the night before last and was really impressed. I had one of the best steaks I ever had here. Unfortunately I forgot to take photos while I was there. The ambiance inside is modern and mellow with a dark lighted interior as with most steak houses. I ordered the small 8 oz steak and had risotto and mashed potato as sides with a Chardonnay to compliment the steak. Lastly I had huge piece carrot cake for desert. I have to say it was a very pleasant experience and I would recommend this place. Next time I have to remember to take photos. read more

Love, Love, Love this place. Me and a friend went here for a late lunch. We ordered the Caesar salad and potstickers. The Caesar salad, was the best I have ever had! Instead of croutons, they give you crushed breadcrumbs, and the salad itself is fresh and lemony. A great take on a classic dish. The potstickers came with a red sauce. I don't know what it was, but it was absolutely delicious and perfectly crispy! J was our waiter and he was very friendly and helpful with finding things we would like on the menu and what would work with our plan to eat light. And the DJ is on fire with the early 2000s hip-hop and R&B. We were straight Vibin all lunch. We are definitely coming back for dinner service!! Wanting to try a famous Calgary steak dinner before leaving Calgary we heard from others the place to go is Modern steak House, about one block from our hotel and at the east end of the main restaurant mall. We are not big eaters so we decided to split the meal. Starting with the house salad, then the main event, the Benchmark Ribeye with sides of mushrooms and the most amazing mashed potatoes, washed down with a local British Columbian Pinot Noir, Unsworth 2022, from Vancouver Island. The steak was cooked to perfection (medium rare for us), tender and juicy. So glad we split it, as there is no way I could have eaten the lot. What really made our evening special, was the knowledge and friendliness of our waitress, Marina M. Assisting with the best cut of meat for our tastes, through to wine selection. We have had great service when dining in BC and Alberta for the past 3 weeks, but if we had to rate, Marina came out on top. read more

Party of five, and I had the honor of paying the tab so had anything been amiss on this first visit I would have had ample reason to... uh, beef. Instead, utter perfection, an agreement from all in our party. Truffle popcorn as an amuse-bouche? That's a new one, but what an interesting treat to start the meal and a great go-to with cocktails. Wagyu dumplings followed as an appetizer along with the Brussels sprouts and we were off and running on this pretty epic evening. A sampler or 3 Wagyu steaks came and really showed off what's going on here. The filet may have been the single best cut of beef I've ever had. I would have consumed it all by myself but it was shared among us. Tender, intensely savory, cooked perfectly medium rare, the kind of experience where volume has little if any importance to my mind. Paired with a couple of bottles of Barolo, a real match made in heaven. For dessert we split a perfectly fired crème brûlée. Only room for improvement is I like a few sprinkles of salt among the fired sugar for an extra pop here or there, but otherwise it was exceptional. This was an important family get together for reasons not important other than to call out the exceptional service, the ambience and everything else about the way we were hosted. Would recommend making reservations as it does get crowded during the dinner rush but the staff were all super friendly! They offer a variety of different cuts, some exclusive to Modern Steak. We went here last month (September ) for my birthday dinner and was very disappointed considering we've visited before at the Kensington location. We decided to try the Stephen Ave location this time for a change of scenery. We ordered appetizers, drinks and the main course. The appy and drinks came out quickly, but our meal took over one hour and it was too late for us as we booked a show. We asked them to bag up our dinner otherwise we would have lost out on our show tickets. Got to the show and my husband was too hungry so we ended up getting a refund for our show and went home to eat. It was so disappointing as I didn't get to eat dinner in the restaurant or enjoy the show. This experience left a bad taste in our mouth and won't be coming back for a while. Their steaks are good, but for our steaks, with 3 small scallops ($28) and one side each was $200 which I say is a bit much considering the expereince. read more

If you are looking for a good steak place trust me save your money and go to chairman's steakhouse instead because this was one of the worse steaks I've had at a steakhouse especially when it's suppose to be one of the best steakhouse in Calgary. The exterior was so hard and black and dry. I asked for medium rare and received it medium well done especially with how dry and hard the exterior was I could not even eat this. Then I showed our waitress she agreed it did not look medium rare so they send it back to redo my New York strip and I got it back RARE. They got this out to me within 10 mins or less and It was bloody and blue inside I could only eat the edges. The waitress came back to ask me and she could see that it was so rare without me even having to say anything because I wasn't going to complain again I just wasn't going to eat it at this point. She offered me another choice and to take this off our bill since she saw I couldn't eat it. I ordered the Creamy peppercorn sauce - NASTY. Had the weirdest after taste even more. She offered me a flat iron since I was hungry and couldn't wait long but she said she'll get the chefs to rush this one. I got the flat iron with the Bernaise sauce which the steak was still dry but manageable. The bernaise sauce was great! I know I could have made this steak better at home. There are some great service here and other great dishes here that saved this review from being 1 star. We dealt with a manager Chelsea and another waitress which I forgot her name but the service was 10/10! I would come back for their service but not for the steak. Some other great dishes were the Brussels sprouts and the lobster risotto! My friends had the mushroom risotto and they said that was amazing as well. read more

So this place was highly recommended by the locals. It has a sharing concept that would work great if you're more than 2 people. The concept is that the beef served is sourced from particular farms, which you can choose. The way the cows are fed differ and the experience at the restaurant is figuring out what works best for you and how the tastes differ. Much like wine tasting or single origin coffee. So it's definitely worth a try. It's hard to make a mark in Calgary with steakhouse institutions such as Hy's and Caesar's, but this restaurant has done well to assert itself in Stephen's Avenue. Having said all of the above, I tried their own farms steak which is predominately grass fed and grain fed towards the last little bit. My medium rare was more medium than I would have liked to be honest. The wine list was concise but impressive. The different take on the wedge salad intrigued me. Overall, a good restaurant but it didn't blow me away. I would probably return when in town. read more

Modern Ocean is an interesting concept where they have seafood on the first floor (Modern Ocean) and a steakhouse on the 2nd floor (Modern Steak). At the top is Modern Rooftop. The vibe inside the restaurant was a very relaxed, clean and cool feeling. Great lighting and comfortable booths greeted us as we sat down. I had the Scallops Risotto which were flavorful, scallops cooked perfectly, risotto creamy, a little salty, but still a good dish. My colleague had the cornflake crusted sea bass with bearnaise sauce on the side which she enjoyed. Both portions were plentiful. We finished with deserts of a lemon tart and creme brulee which were also good. The service was absolutely 5 star! Great atmosphere and space! It sure makes up for Modern Steak. Our server was very personable and went above and beyond; even brought us a bowl of truffle popcorn from Bar Modern we love so much! The oysters were very tasty, so much so that we ordered a dozen more! They were served very cold so they tasted that much better!! The entrees were very good; not great, but very good. I enjoyed my seared ahi tuna with pickled vegetables. It was very refreshing! We finished off with the creme brûlée and chocolate mousse...wow!!! They were not too sweet and not too rich. I really wanted to love this place. But the steak was not up to the standards that I expected. The Keg is much better than this place. The service was not good. I had asked for medium well steak and I got a medium steak. They took my plate and returned it back with the same steak that I had cut into before and this time they burnt the steak. All I could taste was charcoal. If it was the Keg they would have replaced it with a new steak and done it to medium well. Even I can make a better steak than this place. I visited the Southport location last night. I was very disappointed. The wait time for the food was over 2 hours. When I inquired with the waiter why it took so long, he was shocked I dared to ask and just said bluntly 'well ....we're busy'. (There were several free tables so it wasn't packed full and that wouldn't be a justification anyway for a 2 hour wait) No manager on duty ever came to ask us if we needed anything; we were not offered a free drink or anything to make the wait seem less long - like I have experienced in other high end restaurants all over the world when they contend with a busy dinner time. The time before the arrival of our appetizers was at least 45 minutes , and then over an hour before the main course arrived. I ordered a special Caesar salad that was good. As for my main course, I opted for the Black Angus filet and my side option was mashed potatoes which were bland and had no flavor, compared to mashed potatoes you would get at The Keg or even franchises such as Earl's or Milestones. The $49 filet was very tender, cooked medium rare, and my prawns were tasty, but I think quite overpriced at $22 for 3. I also ordered Bernaise sauce that was mediocre at best- I suggest the chef or sous chef watch a You Tube video tutorial on how to prepare a proper Bernaise sauce with tarragon. Please don't charge $7 for sauce you don't know how to prepare. Overall this wasn't a great culinary experience. To justify the high price tag the service and the quality of food has to improve significantly. read more

For the price, the Alberta steak was amazing. Service was very pleasant. We were able to get a seat in the patio and temperature was in low 20's, couldn't have been better. We were celebrating a birthday. Two of us had the Thursday special Surf n Turf for $50 which included 12oz striploin and two surprisingly large prawns. All this was on a bed of mash potatoes and some beans. We also ordered the 14 oz ribeye with sides (cauliflowers and mushrooms). We were stuffed. The waitress gave us complimentary creme brulee for the birthday girl even though we had no space for dessert. Very pleasant visit. Went to Modern Steak for a last minute supper on a Saturday. They were very accommodating! From the first call to see if there was a table, to the server, all the way to the bathroom, I was overly impressed. Everything is so beautiful. The restaurant was busy but the employees seemed to handle it all so well. The girls at the front were so nice and friendly, our server was easy and very knowledgeable. This was a very disappointing dining experience. We were a party of 7 and ordered appies (dumplings...delish) and oysters which were very tasty. Everything went downhill from there. We ordered 6 filets and an order of crab legs. The crab legs were cold (hadn't been thawed long enough) and the melted butter was barely. No candle to keep the butter warm. Out of the 6 steaks only 1was delivered as ordered. and the baked potatoes (the size of Idaho) weren't warm enough to melt the butter. Drinks were slow in coming, the water was tepid. We talked to the manager and she said she would talk to the kitchen. Never saw her again. The bill $700.00 including a 20% tip. I would never have left that tip for that service and food. My dining experience at the Kensington location left me very uncomfortable with their COVID protocol. We were seated at a table that we felt was a little too tight and we requested to be moved to a larger table or even a booth. We were told that they were unable to accommodate our request and a small table was added to our tiny table so we could spread out a bit. I would note that there was an empty booth that remained vacant all evening until close. The manager then appeared and told us that we had to sit between the lines on the bench so the addition of the extra table did not relieve our feeling of sitting too close together. We felt very uncomfortable. Our server, his manager and at least one other employee filled our water glasses several times. Each time the glass was lifted by the server to be filled. The server then filled glasses at surrounding tables in the same manner. My concern is that the glasses at my table and the glasses from the other tables were held by various patrons and servers and the servers did not sanitize their hands in between serving the various tables. I would suggest that a jug of water be put at each table and diners can pour their own water. When it came time to pay the pin pad was circulated from our table and then passed to other tables without being sanitized. I am left wondering if the menu is cleaned between diners? I felt unsafe during this dining experience and was disappointed that greater care and attention was not given for the safety of the patrons. This protocol is not acceptable during a pandemic. We had dinner at Modern Ocean on a late Friday afternoon at 4:00 p.m. The timing was perfect as they offer oysters for half price, Monday to Friday, from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. My husband is an oyster lover, so he ordered six oysters. He liked them so much that he ordered another round of oysters to go with his main order of sea bass. I ordered the fish sandwich. The cod in the fish sandwich was done in a tempura batter and was put in a good size bun with capers, lettuce etc. Because the fish was hot when it was put in the bun, by the time I had eaten 3/4's of my meal, the bun was a little soggy from the heat of the fish. Still good though. I had mussels for an appetizer and they were outstanding. I would certainly go back and order them again. My husband loved his sea bass and of course, the oysters. Overall, the wait staff was attentive and they did not rush us. I enquired about the white seafood chowder and I was told all of the ingredients come from Nova Scotia. The chowder base was made with cream, so I took a pass on it as I am trying to cut back on fat but I was tempted. The oysters come from British Columbia. Everything tasted fresh like it was recently flown in and looked appealing. We would certainly go back, especially for the oysters and the mussels. We liked the truffle popcorn that we were served while we were waiting for our food and the maitre d's recommendation for wine was spot on. All in all, eating at Modern Ocean was a very enjoyable experience and we highly recommend them. read more
