Really yummy food here. I had the mushroom pasta, it was rich and creamy. I would recommend. Grandma had the fish sandwich which she always gets, and gives 10/10. Once again, I'm introduced to an outstanding restaurant, only to have it ripped away from me because I live out of state. I'm speaking of Broken Rocks Cafe in Wooster, Ohio. On the upside, my best friend is now three for three when making recommendations for local favorites (see my reviews for JAFB and The Parlor). While in town recently, my buddy suggested we grab lunch at Broken Rocks. This place is hard to describe. It's located in a beautiful part of downtown and the interior has a rustic feel. And at the same time, it feels classy but in a laid back way. Regardless, I fell in love with the atmosphere the moment we stepped foot inside. Not only is the interior wonderful to look at, it smells great! And that's because the open kitchen is preparing some amazing food. It's simple. It's fresh. It's tasty. It's well done. No matter if you're looking for a healthy option or something more hearty, there are plenty of choices on the menu. After being seated, we were given some bread with olive oil. While I've been served bread at other places, this was pretty tasty. Probably because it's fresh. The sign out front also gets credit for a great recommendation because I added a bowl of the Tomato Roasted Garlic Soup to my meal. It was simple and perfect. And then my Grilled Chicken Avocado sandwich arrived. This is my friends go to sandwich and it is now my go to sandwich. You should consider making it yours as well. The food is outstanding and so is the service. It was still fairly busy when we arrived slightly after the lunch rush. It always helps when you're seated and greeted quickly. Andrea was our very friendly server. She was always nearby when needed and checked in just the right amount of times. We stopped in here because I read about it online. It's more restaurant than bakery. I expect a bakery to be more like a place with glass cases to see baked goods and to pick and choose what you want. I ordered a grilled chicken and avocado sandwich with coleslaw. It was nothing stellar. The coleslaw was pretty and colorful, well dressed, but had less than zero flavor. I had my mom taste it in case my taste buds were 'off' today. My mom had the veggie burger with the JoJo's (giant steak fries). She told me her sandwich didn't have much flavor. She didn't get the chili spread on it, so that may have been a factor. We just ordered dessert- Bananas Foster and Chocolate Torte. Hopefully we have better luck with them! The Chocolate Torte is amazing! The Bananas Foster was pretty good. This is my favorite restaurant in Wooster. Very partial to their Chicken Marsala. It's all in the Marsala wine, not bitter but just right. I like most items on the menu. Saturday I had an Asian Chicken and Almond stir fry so perfect. We had a great visit with the owner and she explained how it got named Broken Rocks. Always enjoyable staff . The food is always good, although there is nothing organic or really healthy on the menu, Example: If you want good quality bread they'll be glad to sell you a LOAF and use it for your sandwich. Hands down, the best place to eat regularly in Wooster. Sure, there are places that excel in special occasions, but for solid, accessible, and affordable in Wooster you can always count on Broken Rocks. When "Bakery" is in your name, you'd better knock it out of the park with your carbs. And Broken Rocks excels in this area. Pastas are draped in delicious sauces, breads turned into delectable sandwiches, and pizzas are fired to a crispy, bready, cheesy masterpiece. And, there's opening bread and olive oil to hold you over as your meal is prepared. Start with the hummus plate - it's generous and has a little something for everyone. Who doesn't love dipping stuff? Follow it with the steak salad, jambalaya, or the fish sandwich. (My dad, who loves fried, plain things, loves the lemon caper sauce and jo-jo potatoes. This is literally the most sophisticated thing I've ever seen him eat, and he gets it every time he comes back to visit.) Stopping here would be enough to make Broken Rocks worthy of praise, but their drink options are incredible too. They're one of the few places I've been in a small town that offered Founders Kentucky Bourbon Stout, which was one of the best days ever. Their mixed drinks are tasty and boozy, but balanced to show off all of the parts. Their wine selection is rivaled only by the local steak house, and they make a mean sangria. And if you're a bakery, you might want to jump into desserts too. Dessert carbs are among the very best carbs in the world. My favorites include the pecan pie, the tiramisu, or a cappuccino with biscotti. Simple, elegant, amazing. It's a can't miss if you're in the Wooster area. As this was my first time coming to this charming establishment, I parked a few blocks away to get the feel of this cute strip of shops. Parking is on the streets so I didn't mind getting a spot and enjoying the stroll. Entry: this is where a star was lost. As a first timer I was unsure of how this place worked, waking in there was a door open to my right & was unsure if I should go there?? Then again, there was a host stand with no one there and a bar stocked with staff behind it aplenty. HELP! The attending hostess was sitting at the bar shuffling papers, maybe preparing for a shift change? Confused, I made eye contact with a white shirt, khaki pant server who proceeded to take out of her mouth what looked like a mouth guard... then picked something out of her tooth. Not a great visual to be welcomed into. Although the hostess did end up noticing me after a few moments and I was swept away to a two top facing the open kitchen. Fun to watch the action! Service: couldn't be better. I had one of what had to be identical twin servers... or I'm seeing double! Very warm, & suggested and informed me of local beers available and even guided me towards a delicious entree! Yums: I ended up with a tasty IPA from JAFB (a great suggestion after the beer I wanted was tapped out) & enjoyed oil and spices to dip my house made bread in... garlic, basil, deliciousness. My entree of wile mushroom pasta was fan-freaking-tastic! Compliments to the chefs! I noticed them taking a peek over at my table and gave them a hearty thumbs up. My fiancé and I were wandering one Saturday afternoon and stopped into this little cafe for a late lunch. It has adorable decor - lots of wood. The menu offered many choices as did the beer and wine menu . We both decided on sandwiches - he the pastrami and I had the smoked turkey. The server offered us bread w/oil for dipping but we opted out since we limit our breads and had already ordered sandwiches. The make their own artisan bread there and it was yummy - crunchy/airy. The sandwiches were awesome and the right proportions - unlike many places who do the "all American" serving of 1/3 lb. of meat on bread lol. Both platters came with potato salad that tasted much like my homemade. Busy place .. service reflects that ..not slow, but certainly not fast food! We've been here twice for dinner and both times we found it to be just okay. We really enjoy the ambiance, with the high ceilings and constant chatter and clinking. It's a pleasant place to dine but we seem to always have an issue with the food. First, the beet salad had us hunting for beets. It was quite sad to only have a few pieces of beet in a salad that's got "beet" in the title. We also ordered the brisket with polenta and it came out with the polenta completely burnt, I mean really blackened and it tasted of char. We had to wait for them to bring another piece of polenta which was fine but I was surprised any chef would let that piece leave the kitchen in the first place. Even our server said wow, yeah that's really burnt. I would never send something back if it was just a bit overdone. This was practically inedible and was adding a yucky burnt flavor to the rest of the dish. That being said, the brisket was awesome. We came back again a couple months later and had similar issues. The wild mushroom pasta was a small portion and there were hardly any mushrooms. The ones we got were cut into pieces so not very satisfying to eat. It was also supposed to have pancetta in it and I never saw a single piece of that, so it was either missing or chopped so finely that it went unnoticed. We also had a peasant salad which was very good and a Parmesan salad which was pretty bad. I can count on one hand the number of times I've salted food at a restaurant but this salad needed salt. Their desserts are great (like really, really great) but for the price, I'm just not sure this place is worth it for dinner. We love the menu in theory but the actual dishes end up being disappointing. If they just amped up the ingredients and took a little more pride in their quality control, it would make a huge difference! I'd still recommend checking it out because there are many other menu items that may be better than what we've tried and the brisket and desserts were delicious, but I do hope that they'll make some adjustments to improve things. read more

Consistently good, healthy, well-rounded menu in a contemporary space downtown Wooster. Priced accordingly for the freshness and ambiance. It can get busy though. One time, upon finding myself very low in the waiting list on a busy Friday night, I had to tell the elderly group in front of me that the restaurant didn't accept Diners Club and their bathrooms aren't "old person accessible". Needless to say, a table on a popular evening is worth lying for. But back to the facts: excellent bread, super soups, salacious salads, overtly-youthful wait staff; Broken Rocks has developed into a dining experience worthy of taking that special person on a first date, when you're just getting to know her/him and you need to plus your culinary cred. We traveled from California to check out the university and I ate at this INCREDIBLE restaurant while my son stayed at the school. We feel so lucky to find this gem. We're just in town for a couple days and after driving all day we're really looking for a good meal. We were immediately greeted with a happy, yet masked, face and were seated right away. Our waitress Grace was absolutely amazing and just so nice. Great service is important to us, and we sure got it. We started with the crab cakes. Although very good, I like mine with a bit more kick. A lot more of the aioli would have really helped. I ordered the Shrimp and Scallops and my lovely wife ordered the Cajun Chicken. The shrimp and scallops were very good. I was rather surprised at how well the Tabasco sauce went with the scallops without over powering them. The sauce was lighter than I thought it would be and complemented the seafood very well. After about half way through, my wife and I traded dishes. (We do this quite often and order dishes for just this purpose on a regular basis.) What the crab cakes lacked in kick, the Cajun Chicken made up for it. The peppers combined with the delicious sauce were outstanding and I actually used my last bit of bread to soak up the remaining sauce it was so good. If I had to criticize one thing on it, it was that some of the chicken was a bit dry, but I would definitely order it again. Fabulous meal, wonderful staff. read more

Ordered the pot stickers for an appetizer. They were a little over-fried on one side but the flavor was fresh. Had the Wild Mushroom pasta (shitake and crimini mushrooms) for $12.25, which was a little steep for me concerning the amount and quality. Great atmosphere and service, but the food was pricey and underwhelming. The bread/oil starter was very tasty and a welcome addition to the meal. The starter was followed by almost $13 for two servings of French onion soup, which seems high. The portobello mushroom on the sandwich was squished flat on the grill so much that it was dry and resembled a jerky, instead of a juicy, flavorful, "meaty" bite.
