Typically I would give this restaurant a higher rating. We went this week for my wife's birthday and both of our meals were made incorrectly. There really wasn't an option offered for them to correct. It was okay but disappointing. We will go back, so I'd say give them a chance. The food can be very good. read more

We did an early Christmas dinner celebration there and really enjoyed it. Luckily we were seated in the back room where the noise level was much nicer to have conversation than in front sections where it was loud. We started with a cheese sampler and it was really good. One of our party has a nut allergy & they were very accommodating to make sure no nuts came with it, or got near it. Their bread was warm and really good. Entrees in order of "happiness of the eater factor" were: 1) Chicken Marsala - Mom & Dad loved it -"get it every time". Portion was large enough for the two to share. 5 stars 2) Pizza - our daughter in law loves pizza and she was very happy with it - particularly liked the sauce. 5 stars 3) Strip steak - our son knows his meat & potatoes and gave the meat 4 stars, but the potatoes were mediocre- even the hyped extra side of "jo jos" was not great 4) Grilled chicken & avocado was fine - nothing special. Came with generous portion of cole slaw - not too heavy on dressing which is the way my wife likes it. 3 stars 5) Jambalaya- ok for an Ohio version. 3 stars. i had the most delightful dinner with my mom at broken rocks last night. wooster doesn't offer a lot in the way of what i consider quality food and ambiance, but broken rocks was awesome. they've taken an old, downtown clothing store and converted it into a warm and welcoming space with exposed brick walls, wood furniture, and great food. wooster needs more cool places like this downtown as alternatives to the strip mall hell on the north end of town. people i know have been raving about broken rocks, and my visit certainly backed that up. everything was on point: service, bread, wine, salad, pizza, pasta, dessert. the only complaint i've heard is that it can get rather noisy in there when it's busy, but to me that's a little thing. in san francisco, a place like this would only merit four stars, but for wooster, this is freaking amazing. i highly, highly recommend it. read more

My son & I were passing through Wooster on a 2300-mile, 4-state, 11-college tour. (The College of Wooster is a truly excellent school, btw.) We felt like reveling in our carnivorous heritage. I had a Greek salad, brisket sandwich, and a pint of brown ale from the nicely stocked bar. My son had an appetizer (I forget which) and the blue-BBQ burger. A small basket of excellent bread with some nicely spiced olive oil preceded our meal. Everything I ordered was very good. Midway through the meal, I had a bite of my son's (perfectly grilled medium-rare) burger -- and started to weep. It was the best burger I've tasted in my 50+ years. I want my son to enroll in this town's college so that I can come back to this restaurant. The desserts were almost as good as the burger -- I had the Apple Cherry Pecan Crisp (w/ vanilla gelato, of course); my son had the truly awesom Raspberry Creme Brulée. Excellent service. Not cheap, but not overpriced. And more than worth every penny. read more

As a frequent visitor of Broken Rocks, I can confidently say it has some of the best food in Wooster. The hummus plate is impeccable with homemade hummus, pita, and fresh olives and carrots. The brie plate is great, but the size of their brie slices has gotten smaller over the years to my disappointment. The steak salad is impeccable and you can never go wrong with any of their pasta dishes. Any time I am disappointed with a drink or meal, I let my server or the owner know and am either reimbursed or given a new option. Broken Rocks leaves me hungry. It could be so very much better if it: (a) changed its menu two or three times per year or at least added some real daily specials; and (b) added decent, hearty sides to the sandwich options. Case in point: My last visit there, I had the portobello sandwich. It's a generic offering, like much of the BR menu, but with Broken Rocks fantastic bread, it's also a nice one --- except the mushroom was oh so puny, and there was no side (unless you could the three arid orange slices). So, in the end, although I spent $13 (sandwich + ice tea + tax + tip), I left without having really eaten anything resembling lunch. And I'm not a huge eater. read more

Cute place with great food! Came with my boyfriend for dinner and we were not disappointed. We ordered the crab cakes for our appetizer, these came out promptly and were very enjoyable along with the homemade bread and oil. I really wanted to try the muscles but was informed they were all out :( instead I "settled" for pad thai (I was just telling my bf how I had been craving Thai food). The portion was large, flavorful and had just enough heat. My boyfriend got the chicken and avocado sandwich and it was also delicious. First of all, let me say that I have only been three times...for lunch. I will update when I visit again. As you have read, they make their own bread, and it is very very good. Since it was lunch and there was homemade bread on my mind, I went with a half grilled cheese and 1/2 salad (it is a legitimate adult menu item)! It seemed like this would be the perfect way to taste their bread over lunch while still maintaining my waist. The person I dined with ordered the same thing (with a variation of the salad). The service was horrible. There were three people working the floor....given that we were one of three tables (and that we both ordered grilled cheese with salads) it should not have taken 20-25 minutes to get us food. I also should not have needed to flag down the waitress for refills on drinks. Twice. The meal was good. It really was. The salads were fresh and had things in them to make you forget you were eating lettuce. The sandwich was everything that was promised. It seemed like both the sandwiches and the salads were small though. But here is the real kicker (it still confuses me as I write it): for two 1/2 grilled cheese, two 1/2 salads, and two sodas the bill was around $25. And we left hungry. The bread? It is very very good. But consider buying a loaf of it there (or at the co-op down the street: Local Roots). I would like to go back again, and I will. We live 40 min north, but it is worth the drive! Fantastic menu with things you just don't get other places. Today I had the Shrimp n Grits-wow! Looked like grits were fried into a "cake" in cast iron pan n topped with incredible shrimp n some fire roasted veggies and a kick of this hot creamy sauce. OMG SO GOOD! Husband got jambalaya which also was spicy and delicious. We weren't going to get dessert, but couple beside us got the Affagotto made with Hartzlers vanilla and a shot of Baileys on it, so we had to get, too. The best!!! read more

Positives: ambiance, bread, pizza and wine/beer selection. Negatives: skimpy on the food portions and tardy front-end service I enjoy the brick wall, high ceiling, liveliness, bread and pizza, but the rest of the menu, especially portion size, can be improved. For instance, the price to portion ratio of lunch sandwiches is too high; a lunch of two sandwiches, two soft drinks and a soup should not cost $30 with tip. And, call me a bit of a Creole-Cajun snob, but spicy chicken soup does not a gumbo make and it's spelled etouffee, not etuoffe. (If you're going to do it, do it right, especially in the food biz.) The French dip, salads, pizzas and Belgian chocolate custard are indeed wonderful, if lacking a bit in portion size, so points for that. As for the service, the waitstaff is extremely pleasant, but the rotating host takes a long time to acknowledge and seat us each time. Overall, a great place that has room for improvement. Cook what you know, have the host at least smile and say hi when customers enter (we don't mind waiting if we've been acknowledged) and consider increasing the portion size by 5-10%. Otherwise, I'll be back for the pizza, cocktails and airy space! Update (Spring-Summer 2010): I keep going back weekly for the sheer youthfulness of the place, and bartenders Jamie, Dawn and Ashley are sweet, helpful and great conversationalists. Broken rocks is another fantastic addition to the growing exposed-brick-chill-place market segment in Wooster. The food is solid, the staff is friendly, and the beer and cocktail lists are actually pretty impressive. The best part is that while I don't find this establishment to be pricey, the prices are higher than the local rednecks can stomach and the ambiance acts in a similar manner as cedar to moths. If you're looking for fine dining this isn't it. . .but if you're looking to disappear into a relaxed establishment and just enjoy life in solitude (or with a few like-minded friends) I wholeheartedly recommend Broken Rocks. read more

After Broken Rocks moved to Wooster I just had to visit while in town. Broken rocks is a great business! Being vegan, it's obviously tough to find places that will willingly accommodate my dietary restrictions (let alone know what they are). Whenever I go to Broken Rocks (I used to frequent their location in Loudonville before they moved to Wooster) they create something special for me, since there is nothing vegan on the menu. Their attitude and service is wonderful! And the ambiance of the new location is incredible! Artsy, even! High ceilings, and large paintings on the walls, and a long layout, this reminds me of a slightly larger version of something that came from the New York scene. read more

Was excited to try this restaurant. It is interesting thou that a business is only as good as its employees. Our waiter was hard to find and when I had to get up twice to ask for help he was in the back taking to fellow employees. I even cleared our dishes. I was really looking forward to the food from what I had read. The short ribs where amazing funny thing thou my husband kept running out of tea and I had to constantly ask for a waiter to get him a refill. My corn chowder was medium something I could have made at home but was good. Whenever I asked our waiter for service he always seemed inconvenienced. We had made a special trip to Wooster for a meal together so it was disappointing. This is not a breakfast restaurant. While I thought the food was ok, 40 minutes for an omelet is a bit ridiculous. When they served the omelet they asked if we wanted butter and jam for the toast. Really? Then when we both said yes, it took another 5 minutes for 1 tablespoon of butter each and a small cup of jam. Not even enough for 1 piece of toast. The only reason for 3 star rating is because of the bread and I have had very good dinners here. I do not recommend this as a breakfast spot. Also, the omelet was over cooked. read more

Lunch. Ordered Pellegrino with flat iron steak salad. Server was polite and quick after I was seated. Ambience is upscale sandwich shop in an older building. Brick walls, high ceiling, and expertly designed. Open air kitchen with racks of fresh baked bread is seen from the restaurant. The salad was excellent. Steak was cooked a perfect medium with lightly cooked red onion and portobello. Seasoned perfectly with the right amount of vinaigrette complimented the experience. I enjoyed the crab and corn chowder and the beet salad with goat cheese. Fresh flavors. My daughter loved the cheese pizza (she's a safe eater) and my dad liked the bleu burger with jojo potatoes. Now, to you fancy MidWest/East Coasters, this may not be a big deal, but coming from California where we don't have brick anything because we have things called EARTHQUAKES, this is amazing. You wouldn't know it by looking at it, but Broken Rocks has some pretty damn good pizza. They were very accommodating to my vegetarian (read: difficult) girlfriend, and tweaked our pizza accordingly. The (free) bread was really, really good, but you'd expect that from a place with "bakery" in the name. Biggest shocker: these guys actually do a pretty good mojito. I wish California had Ohio's tax rate. read more

Broken Rocks is a versatile restaurant and was a great source of quality food for me while I was a student at The College of Wooster. It's good for families, big groups of friends, and intimate gatherings. As far as downtown restaurants go, it was my favorite go-to because of the prices, space, decor, and menu. My biggest complaint is the service -- it sometimes felt like forever between ordering and receiving my food, and I waited for close to an hour more than once. I don't know what the problem is, because I've had friends who have worked in the kitchen and as servers there, and they seemed to be trying their best. Their freshly baked breads are a very nice touch and delicious. The drinks are good, from their Bloody Mary to the Lake water or whatever it's called. The desserts are very good, and I've enjoyed the Raspberry Creme Brulee several times. People at my table have also raved about the Banana Foster. The cookies are nice, but not extraordinary. The pizzas are a good size to share with a person or two, and of a good quality. The salads have higher quality ingredients than many restaurant salads, and are of a modest size (though only compared to average restaurant salads -- they're probably right on target with portion control). I think the Grilled Chicken and Avocado sandwich is a little slice of bliss. It's a seasonal special, "on focaccia with a green chili mayonnaise and lettuce, with coleslaw on the side." I'm not usually a big coleslaw person, but I liked theirs, especially on the sandwich. In my opinion, Broken Rocks is the best casual restaurant in downtown Wooster, with South Market and City Square tied for the best of the slightly more formal dining atmosphere. read more

Broken Rocks is a great little oasis in Wooster. I wouldn't have expected to find a restaurant like it here; it has a fairly hip vibe for Wooster, at any rate. The food is delicious. I've been here for both lunch and dinner, and some favorite dishes include: tomato and garlic soup french onion soup (great flavor but not too cheesy, which I have mixed feelings about. Good for the arteries, bad for the cheese-aholic in me). Greek salad Pizza with smoked salmon and goat cheese (*delicious* as leftovers) Rhubarb margarita I've also had the burger, which I was not crazy about. It was ok, but the meat was not very flavorful and had a weird texture. Come on guys, this is cow country! Service is usually solid: friendly, very relaxed and you won't feel rushed. I ate here two years ago and was quite disappointed but not this time. Our service was very good. The waitress was kind enough to hold our entree order until we received our appetizer since, yes we ordered a smoked salmon pizza for an app and it of course takes a while to prepare. The pizza was excellent! Our entrees, pork chop, a spicy shrimp and polenta dish and a pasta were all very tasty and enjoyed! The bread was wonderful (and we took a loaf home). This was our second visit to this establishment. And with the second visit, there were 40 - yes, forty - of us celebrating our son's birthday. The staff was very accommodating and nobody left disappointed. The brie plate was a hit along with the shrimp and scallops, Italian sausage pasta, flat iron salad and asian salmon. We decided to have lunch in Broken Rocks after seeing all those good reviews. The atmosphere is upbeat and trendy, very inviting. Our server was friendly and attentive. I really like this place until the bread and the olive oil was served. Some review stated the bread was best in town. However, our bread was not fresh and cold as if it was just taken out from a fridge,or a shelf which the air condition blew through it all the time. My husband who is a bread lover, didn't even want to have it He told me that this bread is ready to be gruton. We ordered peasant salad and jambalaya. Jambalaya was decent but the it was small portion, the peasant salad was bland - very far away from being pleasant. We decided not to have any sweet based on our food. Everything about our dinner experience tonight at Broken Rocks was spot on. Stacie was very attentive and kept a good pace to the meal. The decor is nice without trying too hard and had a open feel. As for the meal, we started with the homemade potstickers which were very tasty. The main courses our table ordered were the jambalaya, mussels & fettuccine, and the chicken marsala. There was nothing left on anyones plate when we were finished. When the meals arrived, I thought at first the portion size was small, but after finishing the meal I realized it was the perfect size. I was not uncomfortably overstuffed, I felt full, and had room for dessert. All of our desserts were incredible as well. I would say it does seem a bit overpriced but when everyone finishes everything they ordered and the taste of everything was fresh, it's worth the price. We will definitely be back! read more

My husband and I planned to just stop in for lunch, but we ended up staying for a few hours longer. A good sign! We came for the food. Each had a wonderful sandwich on their homemade non-preservative bread. Yum. Mine came with a tasty couscous salad. His with a German potato salad. You can even buy a loaf of bread to take home. Yum! The food is affordable, with a variety of salads, sandwiches, pizzas, and entrees to choose from. The pizza in particular is delicious. They also have a surprisingly diverse wine and cocktail selection. I wouldn't go here for an intimate dinner, but it's great for a group or a lighthearted first date. The only odd thing is that several times, when I've been with one other person and the restaurant is almost empty, we've been seated right next to another group. We have been dining at Broken Rocks and Rox for years and they're by far our favorite places to eat in Wooster. We recently ventured out of town to a high end Italian restaurant and the experience just really made us appreciate our small town gems. The pizza, pasta and seafood entrees we ordered didn't even come close to comparing to the pizza at Broken Rocks. So I felt compelled to leave a 5 star review on yelp for years of consistency, downright good food and drinks we can always count on. Our favorites: mushroom pizza with Gorgonzola, southwest Caesar, peasant salad, lake water cocktail, veggie pizza, peppermint cheesecake (seasonal and to die for!), Belgian chocolate custard is the best, peach burrata salad(seasonal), shitake steam buns, steak salad, tofu bahn mi, secret menu item: plate of house-made pickles;) I could go on but then I would list the entire menu! We love the Rox side for a more intimate vibe. Both sides are wonderful though! And their bread, I almost forgot. The most unique sourdough you'll ever try. My all time favorite bread! read more

Such a simple thing, but very delicious. My fiance got a pasta dish, which had a bit too much cream. I had the Italian sausage pizza, which was delicious. Always appreciate a place with a good beer and wine selection, since I'm liable to go for either, depending on my mood.
