I just came home after attempting to buy some parts for my road bike at BRBW. Turns out 27 Mount Vernon Avenue burned down about 3 years ago, around the beginning of the pandemic. It's a shame, cause Teddy is a great guy, a tremendously knowledgeable source for bike information, and a real sweetheart. Absolutely awful service too! I called this store up for basic bicycle shopping information and the store owner seemed knowledgable and friendly. He was an ex-bicycle messenger and I figured he came up the hard way and really was legit. I travelled out of my way from Manhattan to his shop. All seemed fine as I looked at the bikes. The owner had a story about each one. I found the bike I wanted and it turned out that the owner had to order it. He did not have it in my size. "No problem", I said. It was at this point that the owner asked for payment in full. I found that slightly odd. My experience was that usually one pays on delivery. The owner also seemed a little volatile. He had a lot of "recriminations" (people had done him wrong in the past - evidently). So, while the owner seemed to be a little bit of a "loose canoon", I wanted the bike. Also, the owner threw into the deal a lock and I paid for some different tires. The owner said it would be ready to go in one week (the bike was being shipped from CA). A week goes by and the owner doesn't call. So, no big deal, I call him. He says "the bike is here but I haven't had time to assemble it. Call me in a couple of days." I say, "ok, we all get busy". I call him two days later. He says "the bike will be ready at 11am". I say "fine". Two hours later I walk into his shop. He is just finishing putting the bike together. "All good," I think. I take the bike for a quick spin and depart. When I get home I realize the owner did a really shoddy job of assembly. The back wheel rubbed against the brakes. The gears don't shift properly. I also realized that the owner forgot to give me the lock that was part of our deal. I call the owner up. "The lock was not part of our deal," he says. I say "oh, yes, it is." The owner tells me he would never "make that offer". Luckily, I pulled out my receipt. I sent him a copy of the receipt and he agreed that he owed me a bike lock. But, that was enough with this guy for me. It cost me $30 to have the bike properly put together and tuned. I never went back for the bike lock. Frankly, this guy has a temper and I really don't need that kind of volatility in my life. No one does. I will never do business with this person again in my life. I really must recommend that you find a bike or bike services elsewhere. read more

Inspired by a recent internet radio podcast discussion of urban commuting, I recently decided to purchase a folding bicycle, as I wanted to ride to work, and I need this type to bypass the mandatory bicycle access via the freight elevator, which only runs during regular office hours. After frequenting the usual search haunts of Ebay and Craigslist, and then Google for further research and comparison, I stumbled upon this shop in a random post on Craigslist. The KHS Mocha folding bike they had posted met all of my criteria, and was better looking and less expensive than any of its nearest competitors... and not readily available in Manhattan. When I called to inquire further about it, Teddy was extremely knowledgeable about bicycle manufacturers at large, and this one in particular. I bought it sight-unseen over the telephone, and arranged it pick it up on a recent Saturday. Teddy suggested Metro North, and I left my East Village apartment early that morning to catch the F, connecting with the former at Grand Central. I arrived in Mount Vernon 30 minutes later to find a "real" bicycle store, and my purchase primed and ready. This place is the "real deal." The "real deal," however, means *really rustic," as in "Bicycle Shoppe..." from back in the day. It's lack of desirable urban accessories, and distance from Manhattan prevented me from giving this place five stars. But I can't recommend it enough for the basic bike purchase. I actually didn't mind the informal layout, like climbing stairs and such. I just needed my wheel trued, and he kept talking about random things, which would have been fine if the sun wasn't setting and I still needed to bike home. He ended up doing 100 other things, half of which were pointless, and he tried to sell me his pedal product for a half hour, despite saying I wasn't interested. The whole process took 2 hours, when it should have taken 15 minutes, because he kept talking about random things. He then bullies you into paying him more than he initially asked you for, and he certainly uses his rehearsed sales pitches many times on you. Maybe it's a good place to be a usual/repeat customer, but I only went there because I had a breakdown. read more

Ted (the owner of the shop) is one of the most knowledgeable people I've ever met in regards to knowing his craft. He is friendly and will answer any questions you have regarding his bikes or general bicycling questions. He has a great selection of bikes and all bikes come tuned and with flat stops in the tires. He also gives a $50 store credit to spend on whatever you want ( as long as you purchase a bike)! He also includes the plastic pedal clips that are one of the best inventions ever! You will never need hose expensive pedals with the expensive shoes ever again. I love going back to him for tune ups because he makes waiting enjoyable with his conversations! I recommend everyone going to his shop for any biking need! read more

Ted posts incessantly in the "For Sale by owner" section of craigslist. Overpriced bikes from years gone by that I guess he can't unload from his remote shop. If Ted is misleading his potential customers about whether he is an owner or a dealer, what else is he misleading them about. . The shop is located at the top of a steep staircase. He acts as if you're lazy if you ask him to carry your bike up and actually asked another customer to carry mine up for me. He was lambasting a customer when I walked in for a repair. He did a repair on my bike that caused me to need another repair. When I brought my bike back to ask him to fix the problem he had caused, he quoted me five times as much as it cost me to get it done at the bike shop where I went after I was tired of him menacing me.This guy is a major ripoff who bullies people into paying whatever he says. He seems to hate his job and is always angry. Don't go here. read more

First off, overpriced! The owner tries to rip you off at every turn. Secondly, the owner is crazy. I waited for six hours in his shop listening to him talk. His reply to my inquiries of when it would be finished was "half an hour", while he worked on bikes that other walk-in customers brought in. Other than the stairs (it's located upstairs) this old time bike shop is just fine. Ted will devote himself to getting your bike just right for you. Plan on spending some time while he adjusts your bike. Just bought a Biria easy 7 bike from him. He adjusted everything to my liking and even offered to change pedals. Don't worry; he'll carry your bike up and down the stairs and he hooked up my new bike rack on my car. read more

Walking into the Bronx River Bicycle Works is like entering an old-fashioned independent bookstore. It's a little more like a hangout for like-minded individuals than a store or workshop. There is great music, an upright piano, cultivated clutter, and a laid back vibe. Ed or Ted (same person) is an intelligent guy who can talk through any subject, art, architecture, poetry, engineering, and especially bikes. He is honest and will give you a very fair deal. Listen to his advice. He convinced me to add toe-clips to my pedals and it made a huge difference. You might spend a little longer here than you anticipated, but for the curious and patient, you've found the right place to get a new bike or repair your current one. read more

As a casual/weekend warrior rider, I was looking for someone to clean up my bike, check for any needed repairs, tune it up and send me on my way ready for spring. I have dealt with the more "mainstream" bike stores in the past, where to have such service performed, a) my bike would be in the shop at least 2 weeks; and b) the price was usually over the top. I brought my bike to Teddy on a Saturday, had it back by Tuesday - tuned, cleaned (as in full detailing) and ready to ride. And the cost - nominal - under $100. Loved the shop itself, a real bikers bike shop - it used to be an old tattoo shop and the ghost of tattos past still linger among the spokes and wheels now occupying the space. Teddy is a grass roots kind of guy - having been a NYC street messenger for many years - he has tons of riding/biking experience and most definitely knows his craft. Bronx River Bicylcles will now be my bike shop of choice. read more

Old school bike shop. I sold my Trek bike here recently and got a very fair price from Ed. He knows bikes and I wouldn't hesitate to come here for a used bike. As he says, the older bikes were better built and are a great value compared to what you get new. Found plenty of metered parking. read more

I ordered an English bike from Bronx River Bicycle Works, over the phone, after discovering decent online reviews about this place . I had the bike in my hands within a week as promised and a little cheaper than I could have gotten it for in Manhattan. Not a mark on it , which isn't always the case in bike shops. I've returned here again a few weeks after purchase for a little more adjustment tweaking and a set of new pedals and toe clips. Ted really dialed the bike in for me without any nonsense. I was out of there in less than an hour and on my way to enjoying a great ride. I'm pleased and will be back with my other bikes for various things. I've found my new favorite bike shop ! If this place seems a little out of the way to some , I'd say that it is worth the extra few minutes to get here. Thanks Ted !!! read more

I have been to this shop several times over the past few years for repairs. Yes, the owner is a bit eccentric and lots to talk and talk. But he has always been reliable, honest and has given me some good tips. The best was his recommendation to install pedal clips. He said, to try them and if I don't like them I could return them for a refund. As it turned out the pedal clips were great. They add so much to the ride. Yesterday I came to the shop to have my brakes adjusted. I was ready to leave the bike and pick it up later that day. However, the owner said I should wait for it because it would only take a few minutes. He worked on the bike for 5-10 minutes and then I was on my way. I 'll bet most other shops would have let me leave the bike and then charge me three times what I paid here. read more

brakes are squeaking after a tune up. gears were shifting well but after 2 rides now having some trouble - not worth the walk up the steps. and it is true he charges too much unless you complain. i could also barely walk in there were so many bikes everywhere. read more
