David is the go-to guy for all folding bike needs in the city! I bought a secondhand vintage Birdy folding bike for a pretty good deal, but it was in poor condition... Cables were about to snap, the tires were incredibly worn down, and the seat post couldn't even stay locked. Other bike repairmen didn't understand my bike and some never heard of the brand. David, on the other hand, was so knowledgeable. He took his time to show me how to best fold/unfold the bike and even asked me to do it in front of him to make sure I wasn't doing anything to further damage the bike. David was able to revive my bike at a very reasonable price with a pro-tuneup and a few part replacements (with a one-day turnaround). He also asked me a few questions about my riding style and visual preferences and made adjustments to the bike according to that. My 20-year old bike now feels brand new and rides like a dream! I am a serious roadie and it's easy to look me up on Strava. I have a bike collection that ranges from a 1982 Lotus Supreme to the 2015 SWORKS Venge. I know a lot about bikes. Folding bikes are a highly specialized game. They have their own set of manufacturers, components and knowledge about what works and what does not. David and Peter have deep expertise and a passion for the folding bike genre. Last year I purchased a Tern Verge X10 as a very special gift for my business partner. We spent about three hours in the shop trying different bikes (Tern, Brompton). I had a very positive experience. This year it was my turn. My new office building has too many restrictions for entering the building with a full sized road bike. I work on William Street, which is in New York City near Wall Street. I commute from West Harlem - about 10 miles each way over mostly flat terrain with some rolling hills. I was on the fence between the Bike Friday Pocket Rocket and the Tern X18. I spoke to Peter and he considered my use case - in and out of the office - convenience of folding and carrying - he immediately steered me to the Tern - even though the Bike Friday would have been a much larger sale. Peter and David have also been fantastic on recommendations (the Ultremo ZX tires, etc) and aftercare (needed to retrue the front wheel after a couple of rides). As FYI - I am very happy with the Tern X18 - it is a fast, comfortable, high performance folding road bike! They've tested the lights, bags, and know how to get you the seat for special status symbol value if in need. Prepare to drop $2,000 as I was thrifty and didn't get out of there for less than $2,500. It could have been $4,000 easily in fact BUT there isn't an unhappy customer here and everyone knows they're buying the best option in the United States when it comes to a bike you can use on the train, plane, or subway. read more

After years on road bikes and my cyclocross commuter, I came to the conclusion that for my NYC riding a folding bike may be the way to go for me. I went in for a test ride on a Friday and the people at Bfold were super nice and easy going (no pressure and no snooty attitude I've experienced at road bike shops over the years). They were very knowledgeable on folding bikes and patiently answered all my questions. The test ride was great! I came back later that day and after a quick training session on folding & unfolding (including printing out the instructions for me for quick reference) I happily rode home on my new Brompton S2L. I reached out to David through email asking on a Tern folding bike. Instead of just quoting me the price for the model I asked for, he asked me a little about my cycling style and preferences and recommended another Tern folding bike that would suit my interests better. As of right now (June 2021) shopping and servicing is a scheduled affair: I called / emailed in advance to book an appointment, for the bike of interest he took it out for me to examine and give a short test ride. After purchasing and riding it a few times I reached out to have him help adjust a few things, and that was very easy to schedule. It is clear that David takes pride in his work and service; when I took the bike back for adjustments I had the vague "the pedals sound a little funny" description, and he took the time to closely inspect and adjust the pedals, chain, brakes, wheels. I came to BFold because my original bike shop Zen Bikes fell off the map. Nice local mom and pop shop in the east village. Probably one of the two premier folding bike shops in manhattan. the store is a bit cramped and full of folding bikes but you can get the best service right here. The knowledge that everyone has for folders is very vast and they'll definitely point you in the right direction to fit your needs. Wide selection of folding bikes as well as accessories. The service and mechanic side of the shop though you will have a bit of a wait and sometimes may have to pick up a couple days later as the shop is small with a small staff. Service is personal and he has many recommendations. Just ask if you have some questions and he'll give you great advice! I suggest searching Bromptons website for all the "options" they have to see if you are interested in upgrading. BFold also has Dahon and other brands of folding bikes, I just like the brompton the best! I'm a long time Bike Friday owner, but it sits alongside many non-folding road, 'cross, mountain, and touring bikes in our household. Consequently, my expectations and experiences with bike shops isn't exclusively small-wheeled specialists. The Bfold team of David, Peter, and Kelly are some of the nicest, helpful, and relaxed shop guys I've ever met. I first dropped in just to grab some 20" tubes. The shop is tiny, basically a hallway, but it's packed with folding bikes and accessories ranging from Dahon to Brompton to Friday. We got to talking and everyone there pretty clearly loves bikes and being part of the cycling community in New York City. The second time I went in was to get a tuneup for a folder that my wife had borrowed. They did a meticulous and professional job: I knew perfectly well what needed to be done (would have done it myself but my tools and stand are in storage) and was pleased that they didn't try to hard sell me on extras. It was done the next day; on both drop-off and pickup we all talked again, easy and friendly. Just recently I've been back to Bfold a number of times to pick out and then take delivery of a new Bike Friday for my wife. The sales experiences was top notch and I couldn't be happier that I bought locally, with the attention to detail and service that that entails. I get it that bike shops are a hard and idiosyncratic business, and that this is the reason that so many consumer have a crappy time when they go in one. The clichés about arrogant guys with shaved legs (I've spent a lot of years with my legs shaved for racing) or super friendly salespeople who don't actually know much about bikes or crusty mechanics that you have to endure--these reflect a reality for people shopping for bikes both at the entry level and at the high end. Top Notch! I cannot begin to rave about how amazing this place this. First, before you go...make sure you jot the address down. It is sub-level so unless you know what you're looking for, you're not going to find this place. It's small..it's quaint but the service is first rate! David was busy (I arrived post-work) with repairing some other customer's bicycles (I know!) so Peter, his helpful fellow staff member became my point person. I literally spent 2 hours here test-riding a few options and going through all the possible bikes that might fit my needs. They're not pushy at all and at the end of the day, all they want is to make sure that (a) you're ready for a folding bicycle and (b) you're going to LOVE that folding bicycle. 'Cause really, love is the most important. And I won't deny it...the bicycles they carry aren't the cheapest ones out there BUT SO WORTH IT! I would be okay making the investment with David 'cause I know he will take good care of me for as long as I need him. And honestly? That's love! read more

THE place to go for folding bikes in the city. I knew I wanted a folding bike (my non-folding bike was WAY too heavy and big to carry easily into buildings where I live, work, and play), and I knew I wanted a brompton (handmade in the UK? win.), and I could've ordered online, but I wanted to a. lay my hands on one before I shelled out so much money, and b. support a local business. We walked right past it the first time, as we weren't expecting it to be "garden level" and underneath the stairs, but once we found it - WOW! There are SO many different brands of bikes packed into a seemingly tiny space (bfold may, in fact, be a TARDIS?) - David let us check out several models and brands, and we started chatting like crazy about the different manufacturers... he kept the store open a little later than usual as I decided on the options for my hot-pink brompton - he brought up issues that I hadn't even thought of whilst browsing the catalog online, which meant I actually ordered a slightly different spec. than I'd initially wanted. After renting a bike for this year's Summer Streets and seeing cool small-wheeled folding bikes zip by me, I knew I needed to get one for myself. After asking around on Facebook for advice, I found out that a friend knew the owners of a folding bike shop--Bfold! I first did a little of my own homework online and had an idea of the kind of bike I was most interested in, a handful of models that appealed to me, and the kinds of questions I would ask. After finding the right time to run out during my work lunch, I came down to the tiny bike store (it's a little hidden on the sub-ground floor). There isn't much space to walk around, but then again, these are little folding bikes. Steve, David, Peter, and Kelly and were all friendly and knowledgeable, and in particular, David really gets excited to talk about the different bikes they have. I rode off the following day in a new Tern bike... which would be where the story should end, but I hit a bump on the ride home and somehow the magnetic clasp inexplicably broke off the bike. After a quick call, I was on my way back. Peter took care of me, not only replacing the magnet but going through and double checking/tightening/greasing every single part again -- brakes, hinges, gears, etc. You can't measure a place by pure perfection (and who knows if it was a manufacturing defect), but by whether they're willing to stand behind anything that might go wrong. read more

I purchased a lower end Danon folding bike here a few months ago and forgot to review it but remember everything about the experience. I had been searching for a location to purchase a folding bike after making my return to bike riding after a 10 year hiatus (or more), being faced with limited space living quarters and accepting that there's a high rate of bike theft in NYC (sorry no street parking for me). I tried another shop, but their credit card machine was down that day, they would need to special order a standard part for the bike that I was about to purchase and they insisted that I pay cash. Sorry, Mama didn't raise any fools here. I'm not paying hundreds of dollars for anything in cash unless there truly is no alternative. Enters bfold. After finding this shop, I really appreciated that they specialized in folding bikes and could truly be a resource of information. The owner was great explaining the pros and cons of these bikes, walking me through the process of selecting a bike and cautiously smiling through my test ride after 10 years of not being on a bicycle- certainly a site to see. I left with no buyers remorse and months later I feel the same. Bfold is located under the stairs of a walk up, so it's easy to miss if you're not looking out for it on the south side of the street. The shop is devoted to folding bicycles. Steven, David and Peter were all really genuine, conscientious and nice guys. David, the owner of the store, has built his business over 10 years and started out going to England to buy Bromptons and bringing them back to NYC to sell. Steven himself owns 4 Bromptons and started a Brompton-owners riding club called Brummie Yummie in NY. You can tell these guys really love folding bikes and know a lot about them. I agree with other reviewers that the sales style of this place is not pushy. They certainly help you figure out what you need and what is worth getting, but don't try to sell you the kitchen sink - which is good given that this stuff isn't cheap. Prices were more or less in line with what we researched online (maybe $ or 10 less here and there for accessories) and at the time we went, they had good inventory. Given that we were told elsewhere that there is a 7 week lead time for your bromptons, that was convenient for us. Needless to say, we kind of fell into an irrational love of this bicycle. We have never ridden bikes around the streets of NYC but now we're definitely going to be learning. read more

There was no sales pressure and he actually offered me a few suggestions to help me save more money. David is very nice as well. I was apprehensive and cautious as I took the steps down and wondering if this was even a store. Most stores for anything these days in the city rely on pushing you to purchase so they can starting pushing the next person that walked in. This is not the case with Bfold. On a recommendation to go to this shop before making any purchase on a folding bike, I stepped inside. The room was full of bikes, parts, etc. Peter was quick to jump up and help. Again I will reiterate that the staff answered every single last question and didn't pressure me once to buy the bike. I had plans on buying a Brompton but after riding that at another retailer, I took his advice on the Dahon Vitesse D7. It was perfect and exactly the commuter bike I needed. I took for a quick test spin and upon arriving back again, no pressure again. Every last question was answered and even as I was finishing up the paperwork and 3 other people waiting, he took the time to show me the bag cover for the bike and how to fold and unfold and waited until I got it right myself. Ordered two Brompton's from Bfold, David (the owner) has been working on Brompton's for 9-years (2012) and is extremely knowledgeable. He customized one Brompton for me in the store and ordered one from the UK, instead of waiting for 14-weeks (what other stores were offering) he was able to order it in 4-6 weeks. If you live outside of NYC or the state, highly recommend you order since you don't pay the state and city taxes. read more

The people at BFold are extremely helpful and knowledgeable about folding bikes and accessories. When I needed a case for my Dahon Mu P8 and every other bike shop I called had them on back order, the gentleman with whom I spoke at BFold knew of an alternative that was in stock, would work equally well, and turned out to be less expensive. He even helped me disassemble my bike and fit it into the case on short notice. Plus, they have a Transportation Alternatives discount (though he said 5%, not the 10% advertised on TA's site). Bottom line: excellent service and selection for a specialized market. I'll be buying from them again. read more

I had my folding bike tuned up at Bfold. Tune up: $85 They have a great selection of folding bicycles, and I even got to try out the Strida for the first time. I decided against the Strida, but I'll be back to get tips on how to better maintain my bike. These guys seem knowledgable, and there seem to be a steady flow of people streaming in and out with their folding bikes. A folding bike in NYC is so helpful: it transforms like those robots into a very tight package I can take up the elevator in my apt. building and takes up almost no real estate in my tiny studio. I've been a Brompton fan for years and finally had the funds to buy my B - a dream come true. Everyone at BFOLD was helpful and lets customers ride around the block and try folding and unfolding different models (not just Bromptons, but tons of different models and folding mechanisms).
