The only reason I'm not giving Brook Run a lower rating is because Dr. Z and Dr. M have been so good to us and our pets over the years. I had seen the negative postings about the staff on Google, but I had never experienced it first-hand until last week. Whomever they have put at their front desk is one of the most rude, pig-headed, unprofessional individuals I've ever had the misfortune of speaking with. I called earlier last week to try to get a check up for a cat I was fostering. We thought she might be in heat, so I had a pretty long conversation with the receptionist about not getting her spayed immediately but still wanting to get her checked out so I could introduce her to my other cats. I was told that they could see us that Thursday at 4:45pm. I told them that I couldn't bring the cat in, but my son would be able to make the appointment. Because I'd only given my name when they first answered the phone, I even said before I hung up, "so we will see you on Thursday at 4:45, right?" That Thursday my son took the cat to Brook Run and was told there was no appointment on the books. When I called to try to get it straightened out, the receptionist told me that we had not made an appointment! If we had, then we'd "be in the system". I explained that our family uses Brook Run but this was a new foster, so she wouldn't be in the system. Her response to that was they "always" put the animals in the system when they make the appointment. Well obviously, they DON'T always put them in the system because someone screwed up. They didn't make any effort to fit us in and acted like we were trying to scam them with a walk in. There was no apology. The only thing they did offer was to make another appointment for next Wednesday. (I wanted to point out that we already had an appointment, but they wouldn't see us!) I was so furious by the front desk's presumptuous nasty attitude that I declined and hung up. Part of me wanted to give them another chance because Dr. Z has been such a great vet, but how do I know that this won't happen again? It was an inconvenience for my son, but he was willing to let it slide. (He took off from work early.) All they had to do was apologize for the mistake. Even if they couldn't fit us in, I would have been ticked off but not so angry that I'd go elsewhere. Instead, they implied that we were being nefarious and somehow tried to skirt the system. Why on earth would anyone subject themselves to that kind of dismissive and disrespectful treatment again? Totally infuriating!!! read more

I needed to come by here and leave some words for Dr. Zuccaro. He is an excellent vet. He helped me when my dog was at the end of his life. Dr. Z was full of information (which I appreciate) and also validated my own observations and actively listened to my own thoughts and concerns. He never pressured me to spend money on tests that were not necessary even when I was the one to suggest them. Yes, his front staff leaves a little to be desired but honestly this vet is so great that I'm willing to deal with that to get to him. Plus they're really not that bad. I did have an issue with one of his other vet interns and brought my concerns to him and he validated my experience with her. And I think she's not there any more as I don't see her name on his web site now. In any event I will absolutely be taking my next dog to Dr. Zuccaro and while I think everyone should go there I kind of hope you don't because there's only one of him and hundreds of us. read more

We've gone to the clinic for dog neutering, last-minute emergencies, as well as routine appointments and each visit has exceeded our expectations. Someone got neutered today! He looks so cute in his cone. Frenchies are known to die sometimes while getting neutered or spayed because of the anesthesia. Almost $300 at this vet in Richmond (& that includes a mandatory check-up, because they've never seen him before) vs. $650 at his own vet in Virginia Beach. I highly recommend this place!!! Wow - I am not sure I can give Brook Run the stellar review they deserve...but I will try. I absolutely love this place (Cooper and Hansel, I wouldn't say they Love it, but they dont mind visiting) ....The clinical staff both in the front and back are great. They are polite and very kind - and Dr. Zuccaro, well he is just plain awesome. My pups can be a real challenge to work with (one bites and the other is just wild)- but Dr Z is easy going and calm. He spends time with you and answers all your questions - AND if you think of something else once you leave; call - leave a message and he will personally call you back. Its nice having someone provide quality care to your animals. Seriously, he treats them as if they are family because, after all - they are - and he recognizes that its OK to be that "kooky" pet owner that doesn't abide by the Cesar Milan "dog not baby" mantra... This place is fab - as a pet owner, I never want to think of the worst...but I am glad to be in good hands with this group of folks because they are top notch. Office location is right on Brook Road Ample parking located in the back, and main entrance faces away from Brook Road Prices: Reasonable - In all the years of being a patient, I have never ever left their office feeling like I had been raked over the coals... They are fair and with 2 dogs, they dont over charge or up-charge you and I really appreciate that... They are up-front about treatment costs and let you know about rebates for any treatment or meds. Flexible hours and for established patients there are Saturday hours. I took numerous dogs to Dr. Z over the years, I would rate that experience a 5. However, I later found a feral year-old dog who was always very fearful. Her first set of vaccines and spay were done at Prevent a Litter, who are obviously very accustomed to dealing with unsocialized dogs who come in via crate. The following year when it came time to give her the rabies booster, she was living in my house and loved us petting her but I never could get a collar on. I explained all of this to the office. I was told I could bring her via crate and they would help. I explained all of this to Dr. Y in the exam room. She comes back with a slip leash and a muzzle and said she will be back when we get those on. The dog got so stressed during my boyfriend's and my efforts, she peed all over the floor, fought and bit at the leash so that her gums bled, and I never could get the muzzle on. I was a bawling wreck. Dr. Y offered no suggestions, apologies, or even empathy. I was at a loss. I thought I would have to put the dog down even though we had a good quality of life with her at the farm because a dog without a rabies vaccine is a liability. I called Prevent a Litter who referred me to Dr. Dahlgren and Fear Free veterinary techniques, and a month later my dog was successfully vaccinated with no drama. read more

I just recently moved to Richmond and was referred to this clinic . I called three times within 10 days before a real person answered the phone, even though I left two messages asking for a return call. I have two rescues who were vetted within two months of my move. I called to make a simple appointment for a fecal exam for one (with the possibility of worms) and a titer test for the other. Also nail trims for both. Even with bringing in my vet records, they insisted that they would have to do a full exam on both dogs at $62 a dog. I don't care how good Dr. Z is. He obviously needs new office staff who can answer the phone and care enough to return phone calls. Also, to want to do a full exam on dogs who were just seen and nothing is wrong with them except to need a fecal test for worms and blood drawn so they can send it to a lab for titer levels? They will not be getting my business. I don't care how good they are. Seems to me they are more interested in money than an animals health. read more

This is the best vet in a 100 mile radius. I drive all the way from New Kent because of their friendly and caring customer service at the front desk as well as all their empathetic vet techs. Dr. Zuccarro truly cares about my dogs and their whole team sent me a sympathy card when I lost my fur baby. He has done treatment over the phone instead of trying to get me to come in the office for extra money and does the best job of truly getting to the correct diagnosis. I highly recommend! read more

I love this vet! My kitten is quite a rascal and when I got her I took her to a different vet which absolutely grossly overcharged me, I had paid well over $400 before she was even four months old. My boyfriend found Brook Run Animal Clinic and our experience with them has been wonderful. My kitten puts up a fight with strangers and they have been awesome with her. We had her spayed there and I was so excited when the bill didn't break my bank, plus the staff has been wonderful every time I call or have questions. I'm definitely an attached cat owner and they were very reassuring when I was without her overnight for her spaying. I'm so glad to have found this vet! read more

We have used a few other closer vets but drive over 25 minutes to go to Brook Run Animal Clinic with our two dogs. Everyone is very nice but owner Dr. Zuccaro is a special person. He is compassionate, thorough and has a great bedside manner (for the pet too). When our oldest dog was sick and dying Dr. Z got down and did his diagnosis with her on the floor rather than subject her to lifting to the table. I am a former customer of Brook Run Animal Clinic; I have been their customer for over 21 years; until I lost my last dog I had from old age and complications from a fatty tumor that couldn't be removed because of her age. Dr. Zuccaro took care of all the dogs I had over the 21 years that I had them; they all were my babies (my little people with fur coats) and Dr. Zuccaro and his staff loved them as if they were theirs. Brook Run Animal Clinic staff are the best (as I would expect of anyone that works with animals) and deserves all the glowing reviews they can get; I miss going there but I haven't gotten over losing my last little person with a fur coat which was on 02/18/19. Dr. Zuccaro had to help all my babies to cross over to the rainbow bridge, which each time was the hardest decision I ever had to make, all of my babies reached old age of between 13-1/2 to 15. Dr. Zuccaro and his staff were really compassionate and they sent me a sympathy card for each baby that crossed over the rainbow bridge. Hopefully when I'm ready for another little person with a fur coat; Dr. Zuccaro will still be there, I cannot imagine anyone else taking care of my precious babies. read more

Terrific animal clinic! We moved to a neighborhood wa-a-ay across town about five years ago and continue to take our pets to Brook Run. Not only that, we discovered that our closest neighbors have been taking their dogs to Brook Run for 30-some years, and that means bypassing a lot of closer vets along the way. My girl tore her ACL and all vets that I was talking to insisted on surgery. Prices range from 2800.00 to 4000.00. I did not have that kind of money or have a dog sedated for 2 weeks in a crate and then do limited exercise. I called a mobile vet and she suggested Dr. Zuccaro. He examined my baby and told me what my options could be. He stated that surgery would be the last thing he would consider at this time. Three reasons 1. she was under 25 lbs, 2. She was not driven by food, 3. She lies around all day long while we are at work indoors. He suggested Laser Therapy, I told him that I would love to start it and see how she responds. I also looked into MSM and Fish oil for her. He told me with this combination that she would heal. She would have a lump on her knee arthritis later on and her life style would be on a leash or she could damage again and then surgery would be a must. She received 2 treatments every week for one and a half months. He examined her again and liked the results that he saw and asked me what I thought about how she was responding. I told her she was doing very well. I have had laser therapy on my back and shoulders myself and I was hoping that it would work for the dog as well. We see the wonderful staff weekly and she loves that I take her for rides and she loves Dr. Z. and her technicians that give her the therapy! Thank you to all the Staff at Brook Run Animal Clinic.
